2:00 AM
I don't know what you mean by slip except sleep.
@JasperLoy Yeah that is good music.

I know women who can’t get out of their slip fast enough.

@Cerberus oh really?

OMG!

I knew this was coming.

Well the Dutchboy kept asking for it.

2:01 AM
I am getting excited, lol.

Uzh Portuguinhos say slip, too.

Zonder pijpen!

It’s translucent even.

I see we've successfully shut down hichris123. My job here is done.

And here we already autocensored autofellatio just for your autoblinding.

2:02 AM
@RegDwigнt Noooo not that.

No censorship in this chat. Only regular schooners.

My poor ears.

His virgin ears!
’Tis all that remains to him, so he treasures them.

I have decided to keep this account for life @RegDwigнt

Tsk.
I just cannot be exposed to non-U Dutch!

2:04 AM
@JasperLoy You could have kept it for humanity. Or to end all wars and hunger. You had just that one job. But no.

So slip is ∩-Dutch?

@Cerberus toilet.

Would Sir care for a moist toilette?

Watch him being exposed to it live. Only on ELU.
Woning!

@RegDwigнt wha wha?

2:06 AM
Eet smakelijk!

@RegDwigнt Shut it!!

I shall shut it right after this wijntje.

Nooooooo...
If only I knew German non-U!

You can go visit your vaatwasser in the mean time.

plugs ears

2:07 AM
You fruit.

kackles
I can deal with fruit.

@Cerberus Comes with practice.

You can visit your koelkast, too.

@tchrist Mmm hardly.
@RegDwigнt Eek!

And grab some bestek while you're at it.

2:08 AM
Haha.
Where did you pick all this up?

@Cerberus That works, too.

Jul 17 '11 at 14:21, by Cerberus
Okay, the top words/expressions that should be avoided:

And what's a nasty German non-U word or expression?
Oh, shit.
I am a fool.

∩ words are best for intersex situations.

Besteck is perfectly U German.
More Dutch nonsense.

2:10 AM
Bistek?

Well, Germanisms are usually non-U in Dutch.
French is usually bad too, unless it's old.

Bistek empanizado, literally breaded bistek, is a type of Mexican dish, that consists of pieces of salted and peppered sirloin, usually flattened with a meat tenderizing tool, and is covered in bread crumbs, which is to be fried later. The dish is usually served in tortillas as taco de bistek (Bistek taco). Bistek Tagalog is a Philippine dish typically made with onions and strips of sirloin beef slowly cooked in soy sauce, and calamansi juice. == References == ^ Filipino Fried Steak - Bistek Tagalog Recipe Archived April 12, 2014 at the Wayback Machine == External links == Filipino Beef...

I bet you never take the non-U-Bahn, either.

Never mind English, which is below U and non-U.
@RegDwigнt Never!! I love the metro.

@RegDwigнt Of course not: that wouldn’t be chthonic enough for him.

2:11 AM
@Cerberus too bad all of your country is a metro.

@tchrist That is from biefstuk, beef steak, as you well know.
Italian bistecca.
@RegDwigнt No, too good!

@tchrist that image is decidedly untasty.

@Cerberus I was improving your spelling.

We are farther removed from harmful cosmic rays.
@tchrist Now I am hungry.

@RegDwigнt I agree, but our orientations may be showing here. Ask a carny.

2:12 AM
Even though my gentleman friend made the best meatballs ever.

@Cerberus I am hungry too, let us eat each other.

@tchrist Thank you.

@Cerberus Careful, that’s what did the hippo in.

@JasperLoy No thanks, I am not so inclined.

@Cerberus when everything is good, nothing is.

2:13 AM
@tchrist Made! Not offered.
We did nothing that God forbade this evening.

Offering balls in this chat is fine.

@RegDwigнt Except...chocolate buffet!!

@Cerberus This evening, no; I believe he forbad that in Deuteronomy.

Bad for wooden bats.

2:15 AM
@tchrist Does he not speak to you every night?
@RegDwigнt Poor little one.

That's why baseball doesn't exist outside of the US. Everyone else has got metal balls.

I mean come on, you even specifically propagate soft ball. Just how flaccid a country have you become?

Yeah eww.

And even the balls you do have are not balls at all.

2:17 AM
Eggs?

They should call their national sport handegg.
Jinx.

First google image search result for "handegg coke".

Nice.
I think you owe that lady or gentleman a coke.

I could sip one at their grave if I knew the location.
But I must be off to get some slip.
Arrive der Chi, whoever that is.

2:21 AM
What?
Have fun.

Somehow they got the gender wrong. Or the Italians did.

@RegDwigнt Well, it would be neuter in Greek.

This is an announcement. My email is now jasperloy at outlook dot com. I hope to keep this email account for life.

@Cerberus The Krauts have a monopoly on Handies.
@RegDwigнt It’s la ji in Spanish (“La ji minúscula (χ) es usada para simbolizar...”). I think it is o qui in Portuguese though.

2:43 AM
@JasperLoy Good for you!!
@tchrist The silliest word ever invented!

@Cerberus in Chinese it's called "shou ji" which means "hand machine"

Funny.
Why "hand"?
I mean, taken from which language?

because you can hold it in your hand

Or did they decide to make up a word all by themselves?

we're talking about cell phones, right?

2:46 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, yes, not that.
I mean, we say mobiele telefoon or sometimes GSM.
Mobiele telefoon is probably from English.

@Cerberus why would it be from English? Isn't that a perfectly apt description of what the thing is?

Languages usually base their word for a new thing on what it is called in some language that already has it, but not necessarily.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 And, no, clearly not from English.

@Cerberus well, that's what it's called in the UK, I think.

Hand machine?

one site I just saw suggests that shouji is a translation of "handset"

2:49 AM
Ahh.

@Cerberus no, follow the arrows

Yes, it could be from handset.

:17159765 You said "mobiele telefoon is probably from English" and I asked why it had to be.

Scratch that, you meant the other message.

2:51 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, because it is the same as in English.
Mobile phone, mobile.

@Cerberus Yeah, but that could be just coincidence.

Probably not...

I mean, it's not a particularly unobvious word to describe it.

Indeed not.
But still.
We knew the English word.
If you know of x from a certain language while picking a term for something, and you pick x, then I'd say you almost by definition based it on that language, if you didn't know of x's being used in another language.

It's funny, I know the word "handset" but never use it. I wonder why I never thought of it when people were discussing "shouji" and "Handy"
@Cerberus I suppose. It's hard to say, though, if you wouldn't have picked x anyway, if it's a really obvious choice.

2:55 AM
I never thought of it either! I think only certain companies use the word, not normal people.

Lke, if you hear that the English call this "x", and you're like "that's just what I would have called it!"...

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Even if you had, you are still basing it on language A if you know about it and pick it.

@Cerberus I think it's not a useful word anymore, because most phones are self-contained. 20 years ago it might be more relevant.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 That is easy to say after hearing it...isn't that what we always think when we read about a term that we like?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, it came from phones that had horns, right?
I wish wood came back for electronics.
Although old phones weren't electronics...

@Cerberus I'm not sure if the earpiece on that phone could be called a handset.

2:58 AM
Nor I.
If only objects were still made to be beautiful.
Modernism has destroyed so much.

@Cerberus gaudy, you mean.

Elegant and refined.

pretentious, over-sized, under-functional

Not clunky and lacking all aesthetic pleasure.

There is aesthetic pleasure in minimalism.

3:01 AM
Only if you're coming from a gaudy background: then you will appreciate minimalism.

That's why I like the design of the nexus 4 so much. It's so minimal.

The problem is that electronics have always been ugly, so any deviation from minimalism makes them uglier in practice, that I agree with.
But consider how wooden covers are making a rentree.

@Cerberus A phone like the one in your pic is totally gaudy. It screams "I am an elegant phone! I take up lots of room! I cost lots! You probably don't even have a phone in your house! I am here on this oversized desk, taking up space!"

Haha.

@Cerberus I consider wooden covers to be extremely tacky

3:02 AM
Nah, it's just adorned in a nice way.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 If done well, I think they can be nice.
But I haven't seen any.

I'm sorry. wood looks good for things that are traditionally wooden. Wood put on things that have never been wooden just looks odd.
like wood panelling on cars.
TACK. Y.
I agree that lots of consumer products are bland.

But cars have always had wooden panels?
I might like this.

@Cerberus cars have been metal since forever.

But also wooden.

It just seems wrong to me.
I've always thought it was wrong.
They just should not be wooden.

3:05 AM
I kind of understand where you are coming from.
But I kind of like it.

Cars should be metal or plastic or glass or something hard. not wood.

Plastic, yuck.

Don't diss plastic. It's capable of quite a lot.
Just because some people use it to be cheap.
Doesn't mean it can't be awesome.
Anyway, to me, things that are wooden should be things that you expect to last 100 years.
like, a desk, or a bookcase.
or a table.
Things like cell phones last 2 years. They should not be wood.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Why?
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Capable, but ugly.

@Cerberus It doesn't have to be ugly. It can be beautiful.

3:08 AM
Not the material itself.
It is like...concrete.

Sure. It can be glossy and smooth or textured or matte and it can be any colour you want.

Perhaps it is because we know it is cheap. Or perhaps because it is new.

I think that's the real issue.
It's common.

Could be part of it.

Like, this desk I'm using, it's particle-board with a laminated surface to resemble wood. But I mentally discount its worth because particle-board, yuck. But if you had made an identical wooden table, people'd be like "yeah! nice table!" but this one was shat out by a robot, so everyone's like "meh"
@Cerberus yeah so that car? looks like a boat got it on with a model T.
@Cerberus That just doesn't look nice to me.

3:12 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes, absolutely, that's how it works.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 And produced a lovely baby!

@Cerberus But plastic can still be beautiful. We're just biased against it.
@Cerberus everyone knows mixed-race babies are cuter than average.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But, actually, this is what old car interiors looked like.

But it's still too boaty for me.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Beauty is bias.

@Cerberus barren. spartan.
@Cerberus well there you go then.

3:13 AM
If you want to remove bias from beauty, that is like removing concrete from reinforced concrete.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But wooden.

@Cerberus Not exactly. One can overcome certain biases to appreciate the inherent beauty of things they are biased against. Like plastic, in your case.

Beautiful ≠ practical.

@Cerberus some wood. But mostly metal.

But some wood.

@Cerberus Well. That depends.
@Cerberus I still think it looks wrong there.

3:14 AM
The adjectives are unrelated. But a thing may be them both.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Every machine used to have some wood. Nearly every.

@Cerberus well, sometimes its beauty derives from its practicality. and sometimes from its impracticality.

Sometimes.
But it makes no sense to equate the adjectives.

@Cerberus Only because we hadn't figured out how to make the machines in their natural, non-wooden state.

Hehe.

@Cerberus I never did.

3:16 AM
Because wood is a fair cheap material that is fairly easy to work with and fairly beautiful.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But you did suggest that x had to be beautiful because x was practical.

@Cerberus I dunno. That wooden steering wheel, for example. I don't think it's beautiful at all.
@Cerberus what? where!?

Or that a failure to see the beauty in something practical is a bias: that implies that true beauty is practicality.

That's not what I'm saying!

11 mins ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
Don't diss plastic. It's capable of quite a lot.
I kept this in mind.

9 mins ago, by Mr. Shiny and New 安宇
Sure. It can be glossy and smooth or textured or matte and it can be any colour you want.

3:18 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I do.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I didn't think that was what you meant by "capable".

@Cerberus To me it just looks like they used some cheap building material to make a basic circle. If they'd wanted beauty, they could have used brushed metal, or chrome, or some kind of crystal, or anything. The wood just looks cheap. And furthermore it looks impractical. It doesn't look like a good steering wheel by any metric I can think of. And I think it clashes with the shiny spokes
@Cerberus Well, I actually meant it both ways. When I said cars should be plastic, you were like "ew". But you can't visually tell what parts of a car are plastic, at least not any properly-made car. The paint hides that. So the choice of plastic on a car is functional; the aesthetics come from the other building material choices such as plating or painting.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So you just like...SHINY! Okay, I get it.

@Cerberus no, I mean the wood doesn't match the shiny part.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Let cars be made of plastic. They would probably be lighter, safer.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 No, no, the materials you did like were all shiny!
You are so transparent.

I'm sorry, I just don't think that steering wheel proves your point. The boat-car worked better. I admit that my friend's E63 Benz had wood lacquering inside and it looked nice. BUT he had all that wood wrapped or painted with some kind of flat black and it looks even better now.
@Cerberus brushed metal isn't shiny.

3:24 AM
You could have called yourself "Mr Matte and New", but nooo.

"Shiny and New" is an idiom

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Still fairly shiny from the right direction.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I know.

@Cerberus look, shine a bright enough light on anything and it will blind you.

But metal!

Like, the moon, it's not that shiny, but damn if it isn't bright.

3:25 AM
Crystal!

Actually I think crystal would be gaudy.

It's not the same.

But probably better than wood.

Do you like wooden floors?

yes.
I think wood looks nice on floors.
floors, and furniture.

3:25 AM
Even minimalists all still like wooden floors, for some inexplicable reason, even though floors are the most impractical of places to use wood.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What is your level of proficiency in Chinese? Is it C2?

@JasperLoy I don't have any measured level

OK, I know about the A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 system.

@Cerberus wood's great for floors. It's easy to clean, relatively easy to care for, and warm.
What else would you use for floors?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Stone, lol.

3:27 AM
@JasperLoy I don't know that system.
@JasperLoy Stone's good. If by "stone" you allow things like ceramic tiles.
But even real stone is fine for floors. But it has many drawbacks.
Wood, for example, is flexible.
Stone is not.
So your stone floor will inevitably crack.

The latest version of Firefox looks so much like Chrome.

My kitchen floor is in terrible shape right now, because the floor flexes too much and the grout between the tiles has cracked and come off.
I basically need to re-grout the entire floor.
I do wish my floor were one single solid smooth piece of something. No grout, no cracks, just smoothness.

@JasperLoy Maybe Chrome stole it from FF from the future.

In fact I have toyed with the idea of installing glass over the tiles in my bathroom (on the walls), so that the walls can look nicely tiled, but can also be easy-to-clean-like-glass

By the way, George got suspended from chat for 30 days.

3:31 AM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 maybe it -is- shiny, but we can't tell because it is reflecting really bright stuff so we can't look at it close enough to tell.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I think nobody has ever done that.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh, no, it is not!

@JasperLoy I'm sure they have.
@Cerberus well, my experience as a homeowner tells me that it is.

It is expensive, it scratches easily, it also wears down in time, it requires regular maintenance, such as oiling or waxing.

@Cerberus all floors wear down in time.

3:33 AM
Tiles are easier. Or epoxy.
Or linoleum.
Or laminate.

@Cerberus Tiles are awful. For one thing, the grout is a pain to keep clean. It absorbs stains. And then you get cracks. cracks cracks cracks.

Pah, not if you have thick tiles.
I hate tiles in non-wet rooms, don't get me wrong. But not for practical reasons.

@Cerberus linoleum is okay, but it leaks VOCs and it can shrink.

They are indeed harder to clean.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Meh never noticed either of that happen.

@Cerberus I mean cracks in the grout. Did you miss my message about my kitchen floor? I hate tiles. hate hate hate them.
@Cerberus well, the new-linoleum smell is the VOCs.
And my linoleum bedroom floor shrank and tore away from one wall.

3:35 AM
Hah, yes, I must have missed that. But cracks in the grout can be ignored...

@Cerberus no, the grout itself comes out. You should see my floor.
I have huge spaces with no grout.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Weird. Never seen that happen. But wood shrinks and expands too.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Very strange. A good tile floor shouldn't have that.

@Cerberus Yes. it can. But a properly-installed hardwood floor will just shrink and expand constantly over the house's lifetime and it will look fine all along.

I know.
But so can linoleum, probably.

@Cerberus No, it's quite common. I've had several contractors comment, on seeing my floor, that this is why they don't recommend tile floors.
@Cerberus But hardwood stays put when it shrinks/expands. Linoleum, if it shrinks, tears. And if it expands, bulges.

3:37 AM
My parents had some cracked tiles in the corridor.

And tile is so cold.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Meh, never seen that.

@Cerberus Linoleum is also prone to discolouring. But maybe not the latest product.

I have seen countless wooden floors with cracks, various marks...

You can get marks on any surface.

3:39 AM
And broken wooden floors...

@Cerberus yes, that is a problem with older hardwood, because the planks were usually made too thin. Now they are 50% thicker so it's much better.

Wood is much softer than enamel or epoxy...

I don't think I've ever seen an enamel or epoxy floor.

Enamel on tiles.

@RegDwigнt Just like Stairway to Lenin.

3:41 AM
Epoxy floors were all the rage, a few years ago.
Of course I prefer wood. And tiles in wet spaces.

@JasperLoy What did he do?

@Mitch We can only guess. Nobody knows for sure.

Or...the kind of floor that is poured onto the ground, with bits of granite.

@JasperLoy 30 days?! jeez

Terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast, which is used for floor and wall treatments. It consists of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable chips, sprinkled or unsprinkled, and poured with a binder that is cementitious, chemical, or a combination of both. Terrazzo is cured and then ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface. == Production == Terrazzo artisans create walls, floors, patios, and panels by exposing marble chips and other fine aggregates on the surface of finished concrete or epoxy-resin. Much...
It will eventually wear down, but very very slowly.
It will take centuries.

3:45 AM
@JasperLoy Then how do you know he was banned?

The worst thing about it is that it can crack, probably if you drop heavy furniture.
@Mitch If you click on his account, you can see it.
We have already talked about it.

oh

@Mitch By seeing his chat profile.

Apparently, he told people to lick his balls and lots of similar expressions, after having been told to stop it, probably.
It was difficult to get the information from those present, which were presumably Tom and Skully.

@Cerberus Let's say I'm not surprised...he was leading in that direction.

3:49 AM
Hmm.
He was a bit hysterical at times, but he was usually fine in my presence.

8 hours ago, by George Pompidou
huh?
His last words.
How fitting.

"From that distance they couldn't hit the broad side of a b..."

He got banned for a month?
Harsh.
Being banned from chat for an extended period is awful.

Apparently, he said many bad things that were deleted.

@Cerberus Haha, even I've never done that.

4:00 AM
Hehe.
Bed time!
Bai.

4:49 AM
Listening to Bolero while working is kinda hypnotic.

5:16 AM
OMG my entire conversation with George has been removed @Mr. Shiny and New

@skullpatrol not surprising, if he was banned for it.

He must have been.
He was just trying to troll me by saying lick my nuts
30 days for that?

yeah I dunno.
Without knowing who suspended him, who can guess why they felt they needed to use such a big hammer.

I know

anyway it's almost 1:30am and I'm done what work is getting done tonight, time to sleep
though bolero just looped around again, it's so hyp-mo-tizing

5:21 AM
Sleep well pal

Later

1 hour later…
6:21 AM
@skullpatrol that pings me cuz of space :p

Oops... sorry
@Mr.Alien so don't use a space?
How many characters is the minimum.

its fine ;) and nope you shouldn't use @ or don't use space, if you see, SE chat takes out the space in the username when you ping.. for example, try to ping Mr Shiny... don't post but write in the box like @|Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 ... it will take out any space in the username
@skullpatrol there's nothing minimum as such.. its programmed that way, am sure that must have pinged to Mr. Shiny as well
and all other users with the username starting with Mr.

Thanks for the info-lesson :-)

any time ;)
