3:00 PM
@MattЭллен Hey Matty. I am waiting for your punny poems from tumblr :)

Hi!

a couple of hours before that pops up :D

user116848
:D

@Arrowfar Hmm, I don't know how much really, but enough that some nearby areas are still under a flood warning.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Yes.

3:01 PM
I am moderately well, and you?

I mean no.

user116848
@aediaλ Wow! That's cool imo.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Oh right! In August?

user116848
@Cerberus fine. Just chatting my time away :)

@KitFox I don't think we've gotten around to choosing a date yet.

3:02 PM
Hmm does the flood warning mean it could be just 1cm high? Or are serious problems expected?
@Arrowfar Wise.

user116848
Yeah 'wise' haha

user116848
@KitFox Hello! Ms Fox.

@Cerberus National weather service says up to 2 more inches of rainfall which will produce flash flooding

@Arrowfar Hello.

@Cerberus Why < awesome?

3:09 PM
@aediaλ Ohh because the ground isn't level?

So I don't expect my basement to flood, but the low-lying areas of roads could be a concern. Fortunately I live just outside the warned area, and on a hill, so I don't expect too much trouble personally

2 inches in a very short time?
Yay hills!

user116848
Hill sounds awesome!

@Cerberus Yeah, from further thunderstorms this morning

@JohanLarsson I'll save you the details, but whatever you do, be careful!
@aediaλ Does this happen every year?

3:11 PM
@Cerberus My town's main street floods on occasion, but only every couple of years

@aediaλ Hmm so will there actually be 5 inches on the street?

@Cerberus For a while, yeah. Sometimes more. When I was a child one year it flooded enough that people could canoe down it.

Tries to stop mind running away with possibilities

user116848
@aediaλ So people use canoe there when it rains?

@AndrewLeach Haha stop it!

user116848
3:15 PM
@Cerberus lol

There. Edited. OK?

Gracias.

@Cerberus my condolences

user116848
Mine too.

I'll be OK, thanks!

3:16 PM
@KitFox Could you please move Cerberus to Trashcan?

@skullpatrol Where do you think I have been all this time??

@Arrowfar Not usually. That was a rare occurrence.

user116848
Ah.

@Cerberus Amsterdam

I.e. the trashcan.

3:17 PM
Wow. You are the most impatient lot ever.

Is that how it translates into English? Fascinating

@Cerberus nvm I will leave

Leave?

@aediaλ That’s what I said — $13k ago.

@KitFox Sorry, I misclicked and I thought you had missed another line.

3:19 PM
No problem.

@aediaλ Hmm there must have been lots of damage to the ground floors of houses/shops?

And basements.

and hovels

Good bye, forever!

And cardboard boxes.
@skullpatrol What is this about?

user116848
3:20 PM
And crops.

Oh! Handy new feature just appeared!

It's super effective!

Is it?

@Cerberus I'm not digging in the "trashcan" to tell you.

Handy new feature fled.

3:22 PM
I mean. Uh. Let's go in this room over here and talk about stuff.

user116848
@KitFox Handy new feature?

@Rob Can Janis compete with Aretha?

@skullpatrol Umm I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, did something happen?

@Arrowfar I think it's mod-only, as such I probably should not have said anything.
But I got my rooms mixed-up.

Well, too late. We know all about it now.

3:25 PM
Yes. We all know about Kit's features

@skullpatrol You are leaving because I overshared?

@KitFox hardly secret, there's a meta post about it after all.

In that case, I apologize.

TMI

user116848
C'mon guys.

3:25 PM
🙈 🙉 🙊

@JohanLarsson Not the deleted messages.

@terdon Oh.
I am not paying attention, I guess.

user116848
@terdon Can you give me a link?

By the way, we've had much more "private" conversations in the past about our bodies here! I recall a certain conversation with I think Terdon, the other Doc, Robusto...

yeah /eet no biggie

3:27 PM
@Cerberus Ok, I forgive you.

Speaking of sense our ships, I am almost giddily amused by titles of books, plays, albums, songs, and such which cannot be named by the media due to rules forbidding coarse language.

@skullpatrol Yay!

user116848
@Cerberus Cerbs no offense, but if you were Hercules then.....you would be fine :)

@tchrist Those rules are silly

3:29 PM
Hence my amusement.

We are not amused

Like, how do you cover a story about some thingy which dares not speak its name?

For me the amusement is tinged with annoyance

There aren't many surviving shops in that area (most everything is a 15-minute drive away) and most houses on the road have sump pumps, so that helps minimize the damage.

Just spell it with asterisks instead of letters, as if that makes it better.

user116848
3:30 PM
@aediaλ Have you experienced a flash flood before?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Well, it helps me not have to explain certain things to my children.

Did you see my “naughty book” citation on the autumntime post?
That book could not have been talked about by name on the airwaves.

!!wiki we are not amused

Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 181922 January 1901) was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she used the additional title of Empress of India. Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III. Both the Duke of Kent and King George III died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German-born mother Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne at the age of 18, after her father's three elder brothers...

user116848
Queen Victoria? haha

3:31 PM
See autumntime citation #19.

user116848
@tchrist Link?

A: Why is there no "autumntime" or "falltime"?

tchristTL;DR: The premise that autumntime “is not a word” is faulty: it is a word. Unlike most dictionaries, the OED does include autumn-time. It is quite rare in comparison with the other seasons’ versions. Variations in punctuation, spacing, and capitalization do not matter. This answer is not...

@KitFox IMHO it doesn't help much. I am more concerned about the implicit and explicit sex and violence, which is not censored. Example, there is a movie out called "Sex Tape - a movie about a movie they don't want you to see" (or something like that).
Well, my daughter knows how to read, but if she sees that ad then I'll have to explain what a sex tape is.

Q: Moderator annotations for chat users

Mad ScientistModerators can annotate users (on the main sites), those annotations are only visible to other moderators and the SE team. This is very useful for a moderator that does not know the history of the user. Previous behaviour plays an important role in moderator decisions, and it can decide whether t...

3:32 PM

I assume that's what KitFox was talking about.

user116848
Yeah thanks!

@Arrowfar Grrr do not speak that unspeakable name!!

user116848
haha.

You were there.

user116848
3:34 PM
Who?

Q: atemporal means not relate to specific time; is there a word for "not related to specific place"?

LeoI can write "the story is atemporal" as a specific "time" (as in setting) can not be established from the context; there must be a word that means 'not specific location" -as in setting also but meaning 'not located place'... do you know such word? Thanks!

If I could remember what the word was, I'd be able to find the duplicate.

aspatial?

@Arrowfar Hercules.

@Cerberus that was Brad, not you

3:35 PM
!!youtube portishead glory box

user116848
:D

@skullpatrol But it happened. And it was all of us.
Maybe not you.

@Cerberus Please try to rise above it.

Stop the obscene metaphors!!!

3:38 PM
Never!

You're exempt.

Who then, me?

Who else!

@AndrewLeach Utopia

Really? I'm not convinced.

3:40 PM
I was joking.

2
Q: Etymology of "Utopia"; counterintuitive

DutchHow did the word "Utopia" (coined by Sir Thomas More) come to mean an ideal place when the Greek etymology specifically means "Not a place." Relatedly, while this might be the prime use of the word "irony" or "ironic", does anyone have a suggestion for a word matching the general public's ideal...

I wasn't.

@tchrist I have Asperger's. I can't tell face-to-face, let alone in writing.

@tchrist Correct!

@AndrewLeach Boy we make a fun pair, don’t we?

I need a :-)

I can see only half of those.

does not render

@JohanLarsson Yay! You are at home already?

3:44 PM

Renders for me.
But it probably won't on Chrome.

@Cerberus I see the first six.

All of those symbols?

Firefox usually renders everything for me.
Yup.

@Cerberus Yeah had an absolute crap day at work :)

3:45 PM
gloats

@AndrewLeach Yes, I see those, and the last half except the last three, and a couple in between.
@Alraxite You must have fonts installed that have smiley faces. I don't.

I'm missing 15.

Well, I never manually installed any fonts.

@tchrist Do some cuneiform and hieroglyphs to test Alraxite's computer please?
@JohanLarsson Ow, what happened?

It's essentially a clean Windows 8.1 install.

3:47 PM
@JohanLarsson Anything specific, or just one of those days? Do you know the comic about crap days on Hyperbole and a Half?

@Cerberus Things broke left and right, first VS then TFS then my motivation for a marathon session.

Oh, dear.

@Cerberus don't know the comic

> Sneaky Hate Spiral
Most of the time, I'm pretty even-tempered. Aside from the odd nervous breakdown or caffeine-induced bliss-seizure, I have the emotional variation of sand. However, every once in a great while, I'll lapse into what I like to call a "sneaky hate spiral."

The buildup:

Sneaky hate spirals begin simply enough. In fact, that is one of the hallmarks of sneaky hate spirals - they are merely the confluence of many unremarkable annoyances.

Your day begins poorly.

3:50 PM
Those are hieroglyphs.

Those seem boxes with strings of alphanumerics.
So, no I guess.

regloats

@tchrist Yay I can see them all!
@Alraxite This shows where Windows' priorities lie.

Smileys>other things

Exactly!

3:52 PM

@Cerberus :)

YANETUT

@Alraxite So I need a better version of Verdana.

@AndrewLeach No, you need a font-substitution algorithm.

@tchrist I want those.

3:54 PM
@JohanLarsson I don't know. Years ago I might have said yes, but that's the trouble with an artist dying young, I suppose.

@KitFox Aegyptus, from George Douros.

I thought i had that...oh! not on this computer.

@Cerberus You have to admit that way more people use smileys on a daily basis than cuneiform. And it's not that Windows "doesn't support" it, just that it doesn't ship with a font that displays it.

@Robusto Artists who die young age well.

@JohanLarsson True for Mozart. Not sure about some others.
I think the point may be that Janis just might not have been all that timeless.

3:57 PM
Emoticon quiz:
O<
what am I?

duck, already answered?

@JohanLarsson What we liked about her was some of the same stuff we liked about Amy Winehouse, of which a significant portion may have been her penchant for self-destruction.

@JohanLarsson Yay!

@JohanLarsson nice

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 So what?

3:58 PM
@Robusto yes true but you want blacks in a good picture no?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I feel a good discussion coming up, but I don't understand yet what it is about...

@JohanLarsson Not sure what you mean.

An artist with addiction problems or similar becomes more interesting imo.

@JohanLarsson Isn't that what I said?

yeah I failed

4:03 PM
Tragedy is interesting. Because it's meaningful.

I don't understand what "you want blacks in a good picture" means.

Janis Joplin? She's white.
Even I know that, and I know so very little.

It was an attempt at being fancy, when i play around with photos I very often find them getting better by enhancing the blacks.

@JohanLarsson Oh. That kind of black.

4:05 PM
Black/shadows could be the addiction idk, it was a fail :)

@Robusto To anchor the contrast. You get less than five stops anyway (when printed).

When the topic was Aretha vs. Janis, and then someone says "you want blacks in a good picture," forgive me for thinking something other than photographic color values was being discussed.

> I question why they take the liberty of using my first name without asking.
I’m sure that Barak and ER say the same thing all the time.

Well, Tom, it's like this . . .

Racist!

4:07 PM
@Robusto oh, now I get it :)

Good morning, Mrs Mountbottom, and how is Your Majesty feeling today?

@Cerberus So "This shows where Windows' priorities lie." - is this meant to be a dig at Windows? or just snobbishness? or merely a trite observation of the obvious?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 How about all three?

@Cerberus A trite, snobbish dig. a'ight.
Anyway I installed Aegyptus and Firefox still isn't showing me the glyphs.

Does FontBook show it?

4:14 PM
Is that a mac thing?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 How long have you known me?

If I set the font-family manually on the chat message (using Firebug) then it works. But it seems that Firefox doesn't find the font automatically.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 It should. I didn't even need to restart Firefox, I think.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Of course. Hence the nickel.
You really don’t expect Windows ever to do anything right, do you now?

Nickel?

4:16 PM
That would be foolish.

It does for me!

In chrome, all of those symbols are boxes.

But then I'm on XP, which has had since Antiquity to be perfected.

Every single one of them.

You're right!
Chrome fails.
I wonder why.

4:17 PM
I do feel it's faster than FF though.

@Alraxite Not if you don't install any extensions in FF.

@tchrist Actually, I do expect it to do this right. I'm fairly sure it does. It certainly works for other random unicode blocks.

I only have Adblock plus.
And PassIFox.

@tchrist Tsk. And why suspenders anyway?

4:18 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Gothic?

Which I installed yesterday to test how well it works with Keepass.

I use Lastpass.

Lastpass's mobile apps aren't free.

@Cerberus Brace yourself.

And Adblock Edge.

4:19 PM
Ah.

@tchrist I don't need suspenders for that.

Well, I like that Adblock Plus whitelists some ads.

That is true...so what do you use on mobile?

The unobtrusive ones.

@Cerberus Why, to keep your pants up, of course.

4:19 PM
Well, I currently don't use a mobile.
But when I do
there are extensions for it.

@Alraxite Ones that it gets paid large sums of money from. I call that corruption.
@Robusto Why?

You can still blacklist all of them.

@Cerberus Shame?

Due to ad blockers some sites lose a lot of revenue.

I don't like to use an extension with such a huge conflict of interest.
@Robusto Are we still not past that?

4:20 PM
I dunno if they pay for them.

Some things you never outgrow.

But I'm OK with it.

@Alraxite If they all just install Flattr buttons and donation buttons, I will give them more money than anyone will ever get from me through advertisements.

@Alraxite Thank God!

4:22 PM
I'm okay as long as the ads are no script plain image.

I’m not.

Good thing you don't have to do that kind of stuff then.
People who have to run such sites do.
I'm against the annoying ones. The ones that will pop-up or the video ads.

I accept no spamvertising. Period.

@tchrist okay where are you getting Aegyptus from? I've found a few different variants and they don't all work the same

It’s like litter.
Except it’s littering your view and your mind.
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 From here.

4:25 PM
Small websites who genuinely do hard work to bring quality articles to their readers, I will whitelist.

I for good reason live in a county where billboards are illegal.

Unless the ads are annoying

All spamverts annoy.

All ads annoy. Period.
2

Amen.

4:26 PM
@tchrist okay. That's what I have currently installed. It isn't showing any of the stuff you pasted earlier. In fact, it doesn't even show all the glyps in the docx file that it ships with. But it is working on other web pages that show heiroglyphs.

And then I think of all the creative talent being wasted on better ways to convince you to buy stuff instead of actual art and I cry.

@tchrist Same here. Even if I want the product and this ad only served to remind me how much I need it, I will either forgo it or, if the offer came in an email, acquire it through other means.
@terdon Hey, I was in advertising for 15 years. I call those The Lost Years.

@tchrist Good!

@Robusto Ouch...

4:30 PM
inorite

@tchrist Did you know that the UN was threatening to kick Amsterdam out of the world heritage list because of our horrendous scaffolding billboards? The idea was that scaffolding was ugly anyway, so billboards were allowed on there. Then people kept the scaffolding up for much, much longer than necessary because of the ad revenue...

Okay Superman, mellow out.
@Cerberus Rightly so.

@terdon Bill Hicks is proof that the good die young.

@terdon I know!! Add to that all the time, attention, space, and bandwidth wasted by viewers. To top it off, add the fact that it makes people buy stuff that have the most ads, not the best quality, and you see what a horrible burden on the economy the current excessive advertising culture is.
@tchrist Yes. The result is that they are now forbidden, at least in the inner city.
Unfortunately, they're still allowed on tram stops; the result is that you cannot spot the tram unless you step out and into the rain.
They ought to be transparent, as they would be in a civilized place.

Don’t step into the train.

I have a grammar question.

user116848
@Cerberus Which is correct?---> (I thought you should be somewhere safe when you find out) Or (I thought you should be somewhere safe when you found out)

We'd need more context.
But I would say found 66%, find 33%.

user116848
But as a sentence?

user116848
Stand alone sentence.

As a stand-alone sentence, it is impossible to be sure.

So 'found' seems alright I guess, right?

Yes, the harmony of tenses usually wants the past tense there.

user116848
Ah.

But find is probably not impossible in most contexts.
