@Cerberus Wait..are we being idle when chatting or when not chatting?

Hard to say.

It's monotonous either way, really

Thanks a lot.

7:17 PM
@cornbreadninja麵包忍者 there are diamond jubilee peeps?
I haven't had any Peeps this year... No easter candy in the house of any sort yet lest I get into it early

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I made you a picture

@aediaλ sweet!

Really, the incredibly garish Powerpoint template made you a picture. I just helped

It was nice of you all the same :)

@aediaλ I love it!

Can you solve whether or not P=NP next please?

7:29 PM
Might need some more coffee for that one.

pours coffee
I rolled up the rim and won!

is that some euphemism I don't want to know?
Oh wait, the Tim Horton's thing?
sips gently at overfilled coffee that she had to make herself because everything not free in America
Ow ow it's hot. Great. Hot coffee and West Side Story stuck in my head.

8:23 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 What did you win?
sips French-pressed coffee

Très bien.

Quoi?

Would you like some coffee?

Drinking some already thanks
boys watching clone wars.

8:31 PM
Ah, OK.

three more hours until my husband gets home, but it's too late innit?
boys will be in bed by then.
I will be in a puddle on the floor.

Can't you take a nap in their presence?

What good will that do?
Besides, it's too late to take a nap.

Is there anything that can be done?

I've got to get dinner ready.

8:33 PM
eating lemon tart

You want to help?

I'll help, sure.

Sweet. I hear you are a good cook.

starts prepping veggies
I'm not too bad, I suppose.
Sometimes things don't turn out as well as others, but you know.

Yeah. mmm, stir fry would be tasty tonight.
I wish I had the energy.

8:35 PM
@Mahnax Hmm, anything in particular?

I think I got Gramma D sick.
Also, I have to try to collect a urine sample from her.

@Cerberus Nothing comes to mind.

cheers lamely
Szechuan, that's what I'd like.

Oh OK.

enjoys the silence

8:37 PM
I like silence.

Don't have kids then.
Damn it. Gramma D's on the move again.
Later.

BE one!!
Bye.

Good luck, @Kit. I hope you sleep well tonight.
So, Cerby, how goes it?
I've just started Spring break.

Yay!
So you've gone to some beach resort to get drunk and hit on girls?
2
I understand.

No, I've got an incredibly busy week ahead of me.

8:41 PM
Ow. Fun busy or annoying busy?

I have a huge project worth 15% of my HL English IB grade to do, but it's going to be fun.

OK could have been worse, then.

On top of that, two day-long events with friends, and work.

Sounds like fun.
By the way, I am reading you again.

Reading me?

8:42 PM
Yes.

Again?
What do you mean?

I don't know the English title...

Describe, then. I'm curious.
(s'il vous plaît)

Probably The Double or something like that.

Ohh!
Yes, that is correct.

8:44 PM
Ah, yes, that's it:

I have a copy of the The Double that also contains The Gambler.

The Double is a novella written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published on January 30, 1846 in the Fatherland Notes. The Double centers on a government clerk who goes mad, obsessed by the idea that a fellow clerk has usurped his identity. It deals with the internal psychological struggle of its main character, Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin, who repeatedly encounters someone who is his exact double in appearance but confident, aggressive, and extroverted, characteristics that are the polar opposites to those of the toadying "pushover" protagonist. The motif of the novella is a doppelgän...

I haven't actually read it yet, hehe.

I don't think I have read The Gambler. Although The Idiot is also a lot about gambling.

“It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things_” he said:
a] “It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things.” he said (don't think so)
b] “It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things,” he said. (looks legit)
c] “It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things...” he said. (???)

**but it's the end of the dude's friggin quote. Why doesn't a period look right there??**

8:46 PM
"When is [my MiL] coming home?" "In 5 days, Gramma." "Oh. Long vacation." "Yep." "So when is [my MiL] coming home?" "Five days, Gramma." "Five days?" "Yep." "I see...when is [my MiL] coming home?" "About an hour." "Oh, OK."

@skopp B.

FFS

It is extremely embarrassing. I'm not sure I like it yet. But I like D. so much, the way he describes people and their thoughts is unsurpassed.

@Mahnax I figured. But it's weird, right?

@skopp Yeah, the comma.
You can put the comma after the quotation mark.

8:46 PM
@skopp I'm not sure I see what you mean. You think there should be a period there instead of the comma?

You can do b or c there.

@KitFox Aww.

@Cerberus I mean the guy has nothing more to say... also, why doesn't the comma go outside the quote?
@Cerberus jinx

@KitFox C only if there is no full stop in the original.

“It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things”, he said.
?
O.o

8:48 PM
I believe putting the comma after is British, before American.

@skopp Comma inside the quotes.
@Cerberus Only if it is a quotation, not for speech.

At least that's how it generally works with quotation marks and punctuation...it's complicated and a bit arbitrary.

Personally I think what I just typed, is fairly legit - or becoming so... this: “It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things”, he said.

@KitFox How is speech not a quotation?

Whateves. Do what you want.

8:49 PM
In British we put the comma outside the quote if it's not dialogue. if it is dialogue (or monologue, I suppose) it goes inside.

Example?

Hi @Matt.

P.s I'm south african

For dialogue it should be inside the quotation marks, British or no.

I'm supposed to use british english

8:49 PM
hi @Kit!

Hey @Matt! How goes it?

like "colour" not "color"

it goes pretty good

Oh FFS, now I'm getting five thousand "reply-all" emails. Argh. I hate today.

@skopp excellent. I approve

8:50 PM
it just depends on my mood, I use both

@skopp Wonderful! Colour is much better than color, IMO.

I wouldn't worry too much about the placement of the comma, as long as it is a comma.

@KitFox I have vodka and coca cola, or I could make you a sweet tea?

I'd argue that “It’s really opened my eyes to a lot of things”, he said. has the effect of ending off the quote as if there is an invisible period there

> "It's loaded," he said. "I didn't want you to feel in any way beholden."

8:52 PM
@MattЭллен 'OMG, I lolled!' 'Totes, me too!'

(Terry Pratchett)

Remember, English was very different in 1888

user19161
Hi everyone!

Hi Jasper!

8:52 PM
anyone been to a saloon lately?

Hi @Jasper

Ye Olde Beer Shoppe

@MattЭллен I think it is usually done that way in Dutch too. It has always seemed illogical to me.

@skopp Not in ages.

@KitFox I'm going to one tomorrow
join me.

8:53 PM
@MattЭллен You're kind.

a quaint lil place

@skopp In spirit. Bit far for me to travel.

@skopp We're not doing it "the first way we think of", Jeremy. We're doing it The One True Way

Fine.
:{
wait... m/f?

@Mahnax Someone messed up her site?

8:54 PM
@Cerberus It's funny because paska is Finnish for shit.

@skopp Stop that.

@Mahnax Oh haha. I guess she was hacked.

ok'

@KitFox sorry to disappoint, but I don't get it

8:54 PM
@Cerberus No, it's also a type of Ukrainian bread.

user19161
@mahnax I see from your profile that you are retired, lol.

@MattЭллен

@KitFox oh! oh gods.

That was childish of me huh

@MattЭллен You never disappoint me.

8:55 PM
@JasperLoy Yes, I believe we have been over this, hehe. I am retired.

@kitfox
asl?
:p

What? American Sign Language?

Age/Sex/Location. He needs to not do that.

@KitFox you're too kind.

@Mahnax Oh, I thought the link was about Stanford and referring to a Ukrainian site. But I misread.

8:56 PM
No. And so, Life (goes on)
Everybody knows that
I'm stressed. Got a deadline on an article

@Mahnax Oh. Oh, I see. I'm such a fogey.

Maybe you people can help me
NO, not by writing it for me
I have a question

@MattЭллен Just like you Brits to leave your punctuation lying hither and yon.

@KitFox Nah, it's really only used on Omegle and the like. It's probably better that one hasn't heard of it, honestly.

I want HONEST opinions/perceptions of muslims

8:57 PM
Muslims?

No holds barred, no political correctness.
yeah

@skopp How can one give an honest opinion of Muslims when there are so many?

@Robusto much like our transport networks.

Each one is different. I don't understand the question.

Or you mean, what do I think of Islam?

user19161
8:58 PM
@skopp It's hard to tell you my opinion of that as that term covers many kinds of people.

@Mahnax you just answered, in your own way

@skopp all of them have a religion that starts with I

I need to cover generalizations
Now

@MattЭллен And you call your trucks by a girl's name: Lorry. WTF, dude?

Tell me if I say...
CNN
muslims

user19161
8:59 PM
@skopp I might as well tell you what I think of the Christian/Muslim/Jewish God. That they are one and the same and that he did not create the world but exists as a being in the god realm.

tell me you didn't think "towelhead"
"terrorist"

@MattЭллен WHY do you Brits have the best humour?

@Robusto I think it's more that you all call women fat.
