I'm off to have some fun without the PC.
BBL.
Have fun.

Hi, I'm trying to rent a place. What does "Occupancy = No Preference" means?

It means no preference will be given to the occupant who applies.
Everyboby is welcome to apply.
No restrictions/preference.

Rent: $500 Per Person Per Month
Does this means I've to pay 500*2=1000$ for two occupants?
Rent: $500 Per Person Per Month

Yes

Now I know why I can't name my SE account "user".

@user per person means for each person
@DamkerngT. why?

6:41 PM
@user already took it!

icic
how about user1

Not sound as good. :)

@DamkerngT. Technically you can do it.

or ultimate user

How?

6:43 PM
@DamkerngT. Just edit your name to "user". SO maintains unique number for each user not by username

@user ic

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. You'll notice a lot of sites have more than one "David" or more than one "Jim", etc.

@DamkerngT. your unique id is 43995.
And you can't edit this number. But you can change your name to whatever you want.

@user So, actually, it's possible.

@DamkerngT. I've done this several times.
Go to your profile page and hit "Edit". You'll see you can change your nick name

6:47 PM
but you both get "pings" in chat
at the same time

What if I tried changing it? Can I change it back?

after 30 days

@badass I don't think so. Ping on message only works by using unique chat message number

Oh! Then probably not, for a while.
Unless there is a hat for those who changed their names.

Anonymous
@user That's one way, but not the only way.

6:50 PM
Yes "message only" works but not "name only"

Ok, so if you type "@username" then both get pinged

yes

But if you reply from message menu, then only the OP gets pinged

Anonymous
Yes, that's right. I wish you could respond that way from mobile

you have to reference a particular message
how is the system going to know who to ping if you type "@username"?

6:54 PM
@badass If it ends up being a problem, the recommendation is for one of the two to change their name ;-)

yep

Don't worry. I won't change my name. :)

:)

It looks like my question (shoulder of the hill) is going to be closed soon.

Q: Is "side of the hill" the same as "shoulder of the hill"?

Damkerng T.From The Hobbit, The tunnel wound on and on, going fairly but not quite straight into the side of the hill—The Hill, as all the people for many miles round called it—and many little round doors opened out of it, first on one side and then on another. As I understand, we can refer to any par...

@badass Thanks.

:)
This, in my opinion, is a good question for that site.

@badass I think so.
Perhaps, I provided too much background information. (-.-)"

Nah, context is KING

7:35 PM
@DamkerngT. I wouldn't worry about it.

Anonymous
I mean, there is some element of . . . I guess you could call them politics, closing and opening things

Anonymous
But StoneyB provided an answer in the comments that I think is correct

Anonymous
So if the question doesn't stick around, it's not a big deal, is it?

@snailboat Of course not. Actually, I think I've already got two good answers: from you and from StoneyB.
I'm just thinking that it could be helpful to others too.
@snailboat You made me curious about The Annotated Hobbit.
Too bad that there's no Kindle version at Amazon.

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I have two editions of The Hobbit I really like. That is one; another is the green leatherette collector's edition

Anonymous
7:42 PM
Of course, by this point I can imagine there have been quite a few "collector's editions"--I don't really know. But I like this one a lot!

The Annotated Hobbit: The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is an edition of J. R. R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit with a commentary by Douglas A. Anderson. It was first published in 1988 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Boston, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first American publication of The Hobbit, and by Unwin Hyman of London. Summary According to the editor, The Annotated Hobbit is a referenced novel where in the margins the "annotator adds commentary". The edition includes also more than 150 black-and-white illustrations from foreign editions and some that were drawn by Tolki...
Judging from that information and your mentioning, I think I really want to read it.

Mine is the 2002 edition.

I still got a $3 gift card of my favorite local bookstore. Maybe I have a good reason to use it, if they have this book.

Anonymous
Do they carry many English books?

They specifically sell English books.

Anonymous
7:45 PM
Yay!

Here asiabooks.com is their site.

Although I live in the US, I'm lucky enough to live near a bookstore that specializes in the language I'm learning, Kinokuniya

Ah, we've got a few branches here too. Kinokuniya is great.
But nothing in this region can compare to Borders (Singapore branch).
Too bad I can't be there very often.
The last time I went there, 8 years already, it was like a heaven for bookworms.

Who say 'crickeders'?

Kidses.
@snailboat What family is the language Kinokuniya in?

Anonymous
7:51 PM
Ahh, I used to go to Borders all the time

Anonymous
Hehe, silly. Kinokuniya is a Japanese bookstore

Oh I get it.

Japanese, mostly. But they sell books in other languages too.

The language is Japanese, the bookstore itself is called Kino...something something.

Anonymous
Yes, the one here sells some English books, too, but it's mostly Japanese

Q: What is the phonological process whereby a speaker uses [ʊ] as a replacement for [l]?

USLinWhat is the phonological process whereby a speaker would use [ʊ] as a replacement for [l]? Some examples off the top of my head; [lɪtl] -> [lɪtʊ], [gɪgl] -> [gɪgʊ], [twɪŋkl] -> [twɪŋkʊ]

Around 5 years ago, Kino branches in Bangkok began to sell English books.

Why isn't this on ELU?

Anonymous
It's a chain--I'm not sure about other stores in the chain

'Crickeders'; is it American or some kind of UK accent? Or is it perhaps Australian?

@badass namely king of the hill.

7:53 PM
@DamkerngT. I don't remember when they started selling English books here, or if they always did, since I ignore those

@Mitch from the top of that hill you can see the forest

@Cerberus I don't know! I could be insinuating all sorts of things. Let your imagination run wild. Just make sure you don't specify exactly what it is, just insinuate yourself back, and then the misunderstanding can continue, bouncing off unknown obstacles, like a jacked up roomba in blacklight.

@snailboat The first time I found Kinokuniya (almost 20 years already) was because they sold some special kind of photobooks. If you know what I mean. ;)

@badass All I see are trees.

@DamkerngT. Umm, I guess!

Q: Where does the word “sh**” come from?

tchristOnce upon a time in America, particularly during the 1970s, if you asked an American whether they ‘fancied a shag’, they might well have thought of this: And therefore declined the offer for fear of rug-burn. Meanwhile their kids, being still innocent, would have likely assented to the requ...

@Transmissionfrom Oh, that explains it!

8:06 PM
That’s got to be my cheekiest question ever.
Or at least, most apt to incite grins.

Argh, Scooby Doo and Austin Powers on the same page!

Of such things as dreams are made of.

nice work :)

Q: Who speaks about crickeders?

Transmission fromSomebody tweeted: Swann. Among many good traits, he always spoke about crickeTers not #crickeders bit.ly/196Vsxb This was retweeted by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack. I don't get it. What's the clue here?

Now I have the Scooby Doo theme stuck in my head.

8:09 PM
@badass Merci.

@badass What? Do you think you're king or something?

I also find it sublimely amusing that the Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue has a Grose author.

Anonymous
@DamkerngT. I didn't mean to say that I ignore English books in general, by the way, just that I don't go to Kinokuniya for English books. The large majority of my books are in English

@Mitch elvis was the only king

@snailboat Got it :)

@DamkerngT. I have to be extra clear, since I didn't sleep and my brain isn't functioning well enough for me to know if I'm communicating anything at all, let alone what I intended.

I think I haven't misunderstood you.
And if I did, I will let you know first. :)

I'm fairly wide awake now, though. The habaneros in my breakfast were spicier than expected

Talking about Kinokuniya, there is one branch here selling only English books, no Japanese books at all. I found it very strange.

Anonymous
Oh! Well, supply and demand, must be . . .

Anonymous
It seems a little odd.

8:16 PM
And why can't I get the link working in my question?

@snailboat By the way, Asiabooks have The Annotated Hobbit for Bt.1,015 (about $30). I might buy it as a gift for myself this New Year.

@Transmissionfrom Put the http:// part in.

> “Here are beauties which pierce like swords or burn like cold iron.”

'Evangeline Lilly' -> Elven Angel Lily
Wait, he doesn't look like Orlando Bloom's dad.

The original casting call for the rôle that would become known to us as Tauriel was for an elf-maid named Itaril. That was a poor choice of name, since it was the Quenya for Idril Celebrimbor, Eärendil’s mother. By quasi-anagramming it to Tauriel, they converted it into a properly Sindarin forest maiden.
Considering the Oromë the forest god in Quenya became known as Tauros in Sindarin.
And Taur-XXX means the XXX Forest.
@Mitch No, but he looks like Legolas’s.

The magic of movie make-up.

> “Here is a book which will break your heart.”

8:30 PM
Aye.
@DamkerngT. More of that here. I tried to quote from sources many would be unfamiliar with.

@tchrist that is so not heterosexual.

There Thingol sat and heard no sound
save far off footsteps on the ground;
no flute, no voice, no song of bird,
no choirs of windy leaves there stirred;
and Dairon coming no word spoke,
silent amid the woodland folk.
@RegDwigнt How can you tell without the salty duck test? And if so, whence then Legolas, my lord?

Where are Kit and Matt anyway? I was hoping to revive the Writers chat somewhat. Actually, I did, but it didn't last for long.

@RegDwigнt I think the teeny girls like him.

@tchrist well. I think you just answered your first question with the last.

8:34 PM
Parthenogenesis?

@tchrist teeny girls like many a guy who every single man on the planet can tell is gay. And they are always extremely surprised when he does come out fifteen years later.

@RegDwigнt Queer how that works out, eh?

Cf Ricky Martin or any boy group ever except perhaps for the Beatles.

Rather reliably so, though.
Zackly.

Or George Michael.
I mean, come on.

8:35 PM
Won’t Get Fooled Again

So anyway. I'll be in the Writers room waiting for company.

@RegDwigнt There is more than a whiff of irony in hearing Sir Elton’s avatar dispense such wisdom.

@tchrist see. Even Elton John can tell these guys are gay, that is how gay they really are.

@tchrist Is Elton a common first name?

@tchrist +1 for so many beautiful quotes

8:37 PM
@Transmissionfrom there's a sketch about that.
I forget who did it.

Thranduil is supposed to have an eldritch look about him, wild and dangerous.
Like from the Wild Hunt.

@RegDwigнt About Elton or crickeders?

Actually wasn't it tchrist right here who pointed me to it?

I laughed quite heartily.

’Twas I, sir.

And I thank you once again.

8:41 PM
Gifted.
The both of them are gifted.

Indeed.

@RegDwigнt Thanks! (To both of you, I guess.)
So what about 'Graeme'? Common?

@tchrist Thank you! Alas, still no Before 'Twas Cool though...

Shucks.
