12:05 PM
So there is a hotel on my way to work, and they post little sayings up periodically.
Today's was "The optimist is the human personification of spring."
Which I read as "optometrist" the first three times.
Now "human personification" is stuck in the back of my head, gnawing on my brain.

I see no significant difference.

Also, my computer froze twice in a row this morning.
I find that picture of a spring very soothing.

Well that's because it got humanly personificated.

yoink
I suppose in Virginia you'd have to make that distinction. Was it human personified or blastocyst personified?

Blastocysts are humans, too.

12:09 PM
This is cool: a Lego sorting box
what? no one-boxing for vimeo?

Cool, but wears the bricks out.

@RegDwightѬſ道 No, they are persons, not humans.

Xblast time!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I likes.
Good morning.

And to you good woman

12:13 PM
Yes, good morning to all!

Morning!

Hello!

12:13 PM
too sleepy to come up with something
@KitFox Is that a human person?

(you could just wave, Cerb)

Yeah I'm sleepy too

waves

only got 4 hours

@Cerberus It is "good morning" in Chinese.

12:14 PM
Oh that is too little.

Buenas dias!

Really?

They have the very simple method of saying "Early."
@MrShinyandNew安宇 hugs and tries to share a little extra sleep

I've always known they were smart.

(horizontal) plank, plank, cross == early. got it

12:15 PM
I slept for three hours sitting on the sofa. Now I hope I will be able to sleep a few hours after now and get a semi-normal sleep cycle again.

crosses fingers

spits in hat

Thanks!! I appreciate it.
Too bad April 1 is over.

Why?
You'd rather I stayed away?

There were so many nice little surprises I hadn't thought of yet for Reg.
What, are you a hater too?

12:17 PM
Huh?

I quite enjoyed how you opposed the mod team, @Cerberus :D

You would have stayed away, because you dislike April 1 jokes?

No, I am sure you noticed that I was hardly around yesterday.

@MattЭллен Ehh scratches heads gee, thanks, I guess!
@KitFox I did notice.

@MattЭллен I read it as "sun over 10" and think "by the time the sun reaches 10 o'clock it's not early anymore" but really you just have to buckle down and memorize by brute force because Chinese is frickin' hard.

12:19 PM
I thought maybe you were semi-jokingly saying that you were away because you wished to evade the fray.

I was being egocentric.

@MattЭллен You know I resist deleters and closers where I can.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 ah! that's better.

Soo... nice weather, huh?

Is there a checkmark in the Windows symbol set?

12:21 PM
Hmm...no idea.

@KitFox There's one in unicode

@Cerberus true. :) Your standing up to Reg and waiwai in the name of fun was pleasing to watch

April 1 fun. Mods no fun.

but font support is necessary. For example, I'm not sure if Windows XP has the right font out of the box.

12:22 PM
I just got a low battery alarm from my body.

Probably not, but I can see it.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh, thanks. I couldn't find it.

> "You're gonna have to shave your pubes. It's like fighting an army of permed spider legs down there, and I'm gonna lose. I'm gonna lose."

@Gigili Are you still up? What did it say?

@Cerberus Probably "Connect your charger"
Or maybe "اتصال شارژر خود را"‎

12:24 PM
@Cerberus I'm more down than up. "Get some sleep" or what Mr.S said.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 No no no no, I spoken just English.

@KitFox Here are the corresponding exes: ☒✗✘
@Gigili So when you're translating stuff, what are you translating to/from?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 none of my exes look like that rimshot

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Thanks.

@MattЭллен Mine neither, that's why I needed to search for some exes with character (map)

12:27 PM
Oh, oh, you're killing me. That's awful.
melts into puddle of slush

oh no!
gets a bucket for kit

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Haha. That guy is really not sane by any definition.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Fa <> En. But my body speaks English.

@Gigili What do you mean?

@Gigili Is Farsi your native tongue? For some reason, I thought it was something else.

12:29 PM
I've been awake for 31 hours.
@KitFox For what reason?

@Gigili Why aren't you going to bed now?

@Gigili I have no idea.

@Gigili wow, you get better performance than my cell-phone!
2

Go to bed, @Gigili!

I need to get back to normal sleep pattern or whatever it's called. I should go to bed at 0800!

12:31 PM
tucks in @Gigili and kisses her head Let's sing her a lullaby.
Night-night, @Gigili. Time to sleep now. Night-night.

@Gigili Can't you take a nap first?
That's what I did.
I do feel awful now waking up.

@KitFox Kiss back

Why is it necessary to stay up all the time?

@KitFox On-ly-three-hours?

@Gigili Time to sleep. Have a little nap now. Night-night. shh-shh

12:33 PM
Perhaps the time for negotiation is over and you should just put her to bed.

It isn't necessary, I couldn't sleep last night so I am up to go to bed earlier.

How many hours do you plan to stay awake from now?

31 hours is too long to be awake. You need to sleep now, not later.

But I'll be up the whole night again

Then just have a little nap first.

12:35 PM
Can't you spread out your shift over a few days?
Go to bed a few hours later than the previous day for a few days.

Q: What's the difference between "distributors" and "resellers"?

LandyI saw it in VMware's annual report. It said "We sell and market our products largely through a network of channel partners, which includes distributors, resellers, system vendors and systems integrators...". What's the difference between "distributors" and "resellers"? Thanks!

@KitFox I will try now but I love you.
@Cerberus I could, didn't think about it!

@RegDwightѬſ道 One distributes, the other resells. But I'm not going to tell which is which.

@Gigili rolls eyes
@Gigili See how good Kit is with children?

> Thank you Kit for this thoughtful response!
I hate my project lead.

12:38 PM
At least you seem to be gaining ground.

Was that your response! He's taken it well

@KitFox Oh I thought that was the OP's response to your comment.

@Gigili I love you too, honey. Just close your eyes for fifteen minutes.

Or twenty. Ish.

@RegDwightѬſ道 I thought this too.

12:38 PM
@Cerberus shh Fifteen is all that is required.

Coincidence? I don't think so!

@RegDwightѬſ道 Exactly.

@KitFox I was trying to soften her up.

@Cerberus Hey, who's the mommy here? I know a thing or two about a thing or two.

OK OK, fair enough.

12:39 PM
That's right, because momma bears just know what's right

Hmm I'm feeling more awake already, a bit.
Still tired.

When my oldest needs a nap, it's the same. "Just lie down and close your eyes for fifteen minutes." It's amazing how short fifteen minutes is when you are sleeping.

You mean how long.
Like 8 hours.

And how long it can be when you are not sleeping.

I tried to have a short nap yesterday. I accidentally slept for 2 hours

12:41 PM
@Cerberus Nah, he can't tell time yet.

next time I'll set an alarm

@MattЭллен Ohh that's so awful.

@MattЭллен OMG same here.

Wow. thinks about naps

He thinks what I think, he sleeps when I sleep. Matt, are you my lost sockpuppet?
4

12:42 PM
@Cerberus It made it difficult to get to sleep last night. but I don't seem to be extra tired today

Then you panic as in OMG did I miss anything? will I be able to sleep at night?, and you will feel dull and sluggish.
@MattЭллен Hmm better than expected!

@RegDwightѬſ道 lost in your tumble dryer, thrown out with the garbage
@Cerberus yes :)

@KitFox Just lie down and rest your eyelids for a few minutes, honey.
@RegDwightѬſ道 I thought you had a planned 4.5-hour nap.
22 secs ago, by Cerberus
By the way, I have a déjà-vu now.

all over again?

@MattЭллен Most escape over the top of the washer barrel.

12:44 PM
I guess so.
Ahhh!
I'm going crazy!

bad spelling and tweened. whatever next @Cerberus?

How many crazy can you go?

No, not again.
@MattЭллен Ahhh2!

@KitFox it's scary back there

12:46 PM
Wow, I over-napped yesterday too! spooky

were y'all as hungover as I was too?

@MattЭллен If it's any consolation, I would handwash you, so your buttons wouldn't loosen.

I overnapped twenty minutes ago.
I am badly hungover now.
From the nap, not alcohol.

Have something greasy.
That always helps.

Like John Travolta.

12:47 PM
Hahaha

Or David Hasselhoff

@KitFox awwww, that's sweet :) and I would be an extra lifelike sock-puppet

@KitFox I already ate a cracker with cheese. Will get another.

Either I've never used the word before in ELU chat or search isn't working.

oh, chat search is weird

12:48 PM
@Cerberus This time, get cheese with a cracker, or at least turn it upside down.

it breaks on and and or

Or skip on the cracker altogether.

Search always sucks.

So what shall I talk about in this meeting today? I am kinda stuck with just one agendum right now.

@RegDwightѬſ道 You must be a very original cook.
@KitFox approves

12:49 PM
@Robusto you misspelled b4.

@RegDwightѬſ道 What do you think, I'm a cheese maniac?

Also, it searches by word stem. So if you search for feeling it returns all instances of feel as well. I feel that's not optimal.

@Robusto I hates, hates it.

@RegDwightѬſ道 no ur

@Matt Эллен - I have restricted the question to business-language. Is "Business-language: word to describe those who perceive problems in advance and plan appropriately" constructive question now?

12:49 PM
@Carlo_R Unicorns can do that. Business unicorns, I mean.

Language ≠ people.
And ≠ a question.

@KitFox Talk about business unicorns.

Perhaps I am nitpicking.

Perhaps?

@Carlo_R I've been pondering. It is less subjective now. I can't retract my close vote, but if no one else thinks it is not constructive I guess you'll be fine.

12:51 PM
I didn't understand it anyway, and then I thought perhaps it was because the categories didn't match up.

In fact, if unicorns gave us bacon, they'd be perfect. Also, pie.

@Carlo_R This meta question might help you with formulating a good single word request.

@Robusto What is "unicorns"

user19161
@Carlo_R A unicorn is a mythical creature.

@Carlo_R It's the opposite of icorns.

12:51 PM

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 Let us not confuse him.

user19161

@RegDwightѬſ道 Every product by Apple is top secret. You never know what to expect. Will it be the Ipad 3? Or the Ipad 4? Nerve-wrecking.

@Carlo Although you have narrowed the context, you still haven't described why you want it, how you want to use it, or other words that you have considered and rejected, so I would be inclined to close it still.
That makes the question pretty subjective, which is frowned upon.

user19161
12:54 PM
Provided there are people frowning.

frowns

user19161
does not frown

user19161
Frowning causes wrinkles, so do not frown. QED.

frowns twice

does not not frown

12:55 PM
scowls What's with all this frowning?

You invaded Poland.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Never!

subjective questions, they weigh heavy on my brow

@KitFox It's in the transcript.

user19161
Never say never.

12:56 PM
@KitFox I think to persons that every CEO would assume.

only say only

Always say always.

Q: Word(s) to describe a set of things, which can't be empty

IngenuI'm a programmer, and in my case students need to pick from a set of exams. They get to choose which ones but they must select at least 2 and at most 3. I've been trying to find a way to refer to such exams. I've thought of: Elective Exams Opt-in Exams Given English is not my mother tongue, ...

I think that makes up most of the official EL&U chat rules

user19161
TL

12:58 PM
DR?

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 CTFD

@WillHunting RADAR

user19161
@RegDwightѬſ道 LASER

@WillHunting that's laser talk.
