It's true. Look how many stuffed-shirt British films win. From Chariots of Fire all the way to The King's Speech. Americans love a lord, for some reason.

I think The Beaver was a good movie.

user19161
@Mahnax What was it about?

user19161
@Mahnax WTF?

@WillHunting It's so good.
Hilarious.

user19161
3:06 AM
Sometimes I watch a movie just because of the actor/actress.

Off to bed. Night allayaz.

Bye!

user19161
@Robusto Night!

user19161
@Mahnax I thought it was a chick flick.

@WillHunting Heck no.
I want one.

user19161
3:16 AM
I am not into pets.

Aww.

@WillHunting get a spider. it can sit in its terrarium all day long and only get out at night.

user19161
In fact I am inclined to say that man should not have pets sometimes, because man eats animals for food and keeps others as pets which may seem a little hypocritical.

Yes, well, cats are nice creatures.

user19161
3:18 AM
@Vitaly Wow you use terribly hard words like terrarium!

@Vitaly Do you have a spider?

Feb 12 at 4:28, by Vitaly
@Cerberus i wanted to buy a spider for a pet, but decided not to because of all the mess with breeding roaches to feed it

@Vitaly I see.

user19161
@daniel Hi!

@WillHunting Hi!

3:21 AM
@Danielδ 'Tis announced.
41 mins ago, by Jim
Woohoo!! 14000 questions!

So it is.

And hello.

btw, how many Jims are there?

user19161
@Danielδ I wanted to say that too! Hehe.

@Danielδ Waaaay too many.

user19161
3:23 AM
@Danielδ typing jim into user search shows many many jims

Haha, beat me to it.

Yes indeed.
Mac or PC, Daniel?

PC
Windows 8
Getting used to it still...
That's probably why you beat me to the draw.

Is taking screen shots easier natively, or do you use a 3rd party app?

user19161
3:25 AM
@Danielδ You guys are nuts!

[Function key] + [prtsc]

user19161
@Danielδ What? It's out?

@WillHunting Good good

@Danielδ And then copy into Paint, and crop, etc.?
Or screen select?

@Mahnax The former
Yes
Then save to my pix library, then dash back here and fire it off!

3:26 AM
@Danielδ Ah, so it's not the most efficient thing.

@Mahnax Gimme

@Danielδ Quoi?

@Mahnax The most efficient thing.

How?

3:27 AM
Mac.

user19161
@daniel Windows 8 is out???

Do it again. I'm timing you.

14 secs since I posted. Woohoo!

Oh yeah!

3:28 AM
No, 12!
According to the timestamp.

Hmmmm...

@WillHunting Part way.

Beat that!

Yeah, your 3rd party app is faster.

4 seconds
You guys.

user19161
3:29 AM
@Danielδ You are using the preview or something?

bows
My programme is called Zizorz.

@WillHunting Yes, something like that

Should work on Win 8.

@WillHunting Not totally bug free, but amazing.

@Danielδ What do you like about it?

user19161
3:30 AM
@Danielδ I have not touched Windows for very long, on Debian now.

@Cerberus Hey! AHK! I love AHK.

@Danielδ Woohoo! High five!

Oh, don't even get him started.
AHK is his one true love.

high-fives, but accidentally jumps in the wrong direction and falls down

user19161
Oh dear AHK AGAIN.

3:31 AM
I use it at work

@WillHunting That about sums it up.
@Danielδ You work?

@Mahnax Part time

@Mahnax I wouldn't say that, but it is pretty awesome. I kept going on about it because noöne here has ever said a positive thing about it until now.
Which is because nobody knows it.

@Mahnax Tax & Accounting

@Cerberus Alrighty.
@Danielδ At your age, that's impressive.

3:32 AM
@Cerberus 'Cept me.

user19161
@Danielδ Your family business right?

@Danielδ And that's why I tried high-fiving you. Yay!

Slightly less so if it's a family business, but still.

@WillHunting Kinda. Remember my dad's business is carpentry
@WillHunting but the tax business is my uncle's (dad's brother's).

user19161
@Danielδ Yes I remember everything about everyone here...

3:32 AM
And you already do taxes and accounting? Wow.

I can make a mean taco.

user19161
mean mode median

user19161
@Vitaly I saw a spider that size but it was black and thinner, probably another kind.

I know a reptile breeder.
She used to keep scorpions and spiders.

user19161
I know a python.

3:36 AM
Says the duck.

user19161
Says the python.

This is silly.
Oh, Daniel left.
He never stays long.

user19161
You know what Daniel looks like?

Boo

@WillHunting Yep.

user19161
3:40 AM
@Mahnax Oh you were around then.

@WillHunting Indeed I was.

@WillHunting Yes.
@Mahnax I shouldn't be on as much as I am.

@Danielδ I suppose.
Then again, this isn't a bad place to be.

@Mahnax There's always something better I could be doing...
Like going to bed
@Mahnax True.

user19161
I even know what Mahnax sounds like.

3:42 AM
@WillHunting From his blog?

@Danielδ Oh, it is that time of night.
@Danielδ Nein.

user19161
@Danielδ Yes you should go now. It's almost midnight.

I posted a video of my voice explaining differences in pronunciation once.

user19161
@Danielδ We deleted our blogs. From a youtube clip he made about pronunciation.

I may still have it kicking around.

3:43 AM
@WillHunting You. Now you know why I never had one.

user19161
@Mahnax Yes please show it again.

@WillHunting Meh.
Fine.
The mic always makes my voice sound funny.

user19161
@Mahnax That voice sounds so ... I dunno how to describe.

@WillHunting Try.

user19161
@Mahnax Maybe I just can't reconcile you with it!

3:46 AM
@WillHunting Huh.

user19161
Then again I would not know what it should be.

@WillHunting I can. He sounds like someone I know who is 16.

@Danielδ Well, I'm 15, so that's fairly accurate.

user19161
@Danielδ Maybe because I have not been talking to people that age!

@Mahnax Still 15? When's your birthday? Month, at least?

3:48 AM
@Danielδ Oh, October 23.
I turned 15 right around the time I started participating here.

user19161
@Danielδ I know yours too!

I know yours, Jasper.

@WillHunting Yes, you remember everything.

user19161
@Mahnax I think all this is in the transcript anyway.

@WillHunting Yessir.

user19161
3:50 AM
@Danielδ I thought you were supposed to be in bed?

@WillHunting Watch

user19161
@Danielδ Good night!

user19161
I am going to sleep too @mahnax!

I saw that!

@WillHunting Okay, night!
If you keep pinging him, Jasper, he'll keep coming back.

Q: How crazy can "and" be?

Ron MaimonAfter seeing completely insane examples of "and" usage in this question , I realized that I have no clue how to use the word "and" grammatically: How far does the insanity go? Are the following grammatical? John is, and Sally hates, cooking. John has once ineptly, and Sally hates, cooked meat....

9:35 AM
@Cerberus It would be good if the pub had the resources to oppose the abuse of the trademark system that the Saul Zaentz Company are perpetrating, but I doubt that they do. It's probably better that they settle out of court - if they went into a legal battle and lost then there would be precedent in favour of SZC, which no one wants.

10:14 AM
so not constructive it is tearing at the fabric of the universe:

Q: great phrases and passages starting "We"

AlexHopefully this will be a fun one. I'm looking for some memorable, perhaps famous phrases/sentences/passage starting with the word "We". For instance: "We the People of the United States..." <-- preamble to the constitution of the U.S. Up votes for all who answer with one.

Is there a way of tagging a question as evil, and should be deleted?

you can flag it as offensive

Some degenerate over on SO is asking for advice on how to launch an SQL-injection attack.

ye gods
can you link? I'll vote to close!

Worse still, there are two answers!

Q: SQL injection on PostgreSQL

user1139023My clienet(android) sends user details in the user form and my servlet just enters those details into to the database(postgre sql). I tried to give to do a sql injection attack by giving ;DELETE FROM tbl_name; in the username field. But postgresql just treats it as a value and enters it as the us...

hmmm. it could be legit

Closing is not enough. This question should be deleted.
It could be legit, yes. But is the purpose of SO to advise future would-be SQL-injection attackers?

they could be penetration testing their own application

Yes, I think they probably are. That's not the point.

10:20 AM
@DavidWallace help as many people on the internet as possible ;)

If I flag the question for mod attention, do I get to type a couple of sentences explaining why?
I suppose I could post a comment first, then flag it.

so, yes, you do

OK, thanks. I'll do that right away.
Done. We'll see what happens.

10:51 AM
Hi @Alex, how're things?

hey going well thanks for your input
sad that my first post on a new stack site torpedoed .

No trouble. Sorry if I came across as harsh.
I guess a mod or the 10K+ users will sort out deleting the question in due course
This question seems off topic:

Q: How do I spell my name in english? (it's cyrillic)

Nikolay DyankovThis might sound a bit weird but, I'm not really sure how should I spell my name in english. I'm working with clients from all over the world and they are all having trouble saying my name - Nikolay Dyankov. That's how it's spelled in my ID card, but just because it's in my ID doesn't mean that i...

11:08 AM
Actually this is something that might be good for discussion. English is my first language however I'm terrible with it. In school I was given extra dyslexia efforts and most of my profession is in the visual media. It's an odd position I'm in as I have copywriters who work for me and they are very good however I'm often stuck for words for little things when they are not around or I'm looking for a slightly different tone/phrase/style then they've been coming up with.
I wish there was a stack site which dealt with looser more creative problems. Some sort of 'can anyone think of a slightly better xxxx".

Damn, Matt! I had just typed an answer to that (Nikolay Dyankov's naming problem) when you and Reg closed it. The "this question is now closed" appeared a split second before I clicked "post answer". So I did the evil bad thing and turned my answer into a comment.

@Alex We do allow but we also close a lot of them as too localised or not constructive. It really depends on how you phrase the request
@DavidWallace oh! Well, you still got to help him out.

Yeah, stuffs up the spacing though.
And removes the opportunity for me to gain rep points.

true, true

I do see where you are coming from, this set of sites is so useful when it comes to very defined issues and getting peer advice and most of that is because the Q&As are all for the 'common good'. Maybe I'll have a look at the upcoming sites in area51 and see if there's something I can vote for
thanks for your time mate

11:13 AM
I think "closed as too localised" might fit better than "closed as off topic". It's unlikely that other people called Nikolay Dyankov will come looking for an answer to the question.

@Alex no trouble!
@DavidWallace yeah, too localised went through my mind too.

Transliteration is off-topic.

But it was about how native speakers are likely to interpret different letters.

You could pick a way more common word, say спутник, and ask how to romanize that, and it would still be off-topic.

Yes, but everybody already knows how to Romanise спутник. Apart from those who don't, of course.

11:15 AM
@DavidWallace "Interpretation" is subjective and argumentative. But this is not a question of interpretation. There are existing standards. Wikipedia lists them.

Hello, I have question about American Accent.
Does people in this video speak generic American English?

@DavidWallace but the existing romanization does no justice to the original. The N is palatalized in Russian.

:)

Just like the D in Dyankov.

@RegDwight you're not wrong, but good luck representing that to speakers of English, who don't (in the main) palatalise Ns.

11:17 AM
@Anonymous sorry, I don't have sound at work, I can't help you

If he were to get a passport, his name would be spelled Dyankov by the authorities. Whether or not he likes it.

@Anonymous Can't help you. I'm not sure there are too many Americans here right now.

This is not a question for speakers of NZ English, this is a question for Russian bureaucrats.
And let me tell you one more thing. Those guys change their mind all the time.

@Matt no problem - I will be online again after I got home :) If I won't get answer I will ask again, lol.

See my comment here.
> I used to have an "iou" in my family name. Then the authorities suddenly decided that they no longer liked the so-called "French transliteration", so millions of people had to get new passports, and the romanized name in mine is now spelled with a "yu". Fast forward a decade or so, and I still often misspell my own signature. Muscle memory is like that.

11:19 AM
No, he asked how he should write it, so that native English speakers were more likely to correct it. I am unaware of any English dialect that palatalises Ds, so he's probably stiff out of luck, no matter what the Russian Bureaucrats insist on.
How come I can't spell when I'm tired?

you just did!

Spelling is a matter of convention.

Yes, but I had to stare at "Beaurocrats" for several seconds before working out why it looked funny.

mostly because the tireder you are the more mistakes you make at everything. Spelling is a subset of everything

What he is asking for is precisely the opposite, circumventing existing conventions.
This is like asking, which would be your favorite spelling of "generous".

11:22 AM
jenorus because it pits jen against everyone else

I vote jennyrose. Now what?

No, it's like asking "how should I write generous, if I want to maximise the chance that an English speaker who doesn't know this word will pronounce it correctly"

Fair enough. But that's the same question.

See I would put the stress on the second syllable of "Jenorus", which would make it wrong.

@DavidWallace more like ginormous!

11:24 AM
Gigawatts.

A question like "what's your favourite spelling of generous" is really just a poll.
(ignoring your favourite spelling of favourite)

favourite, obvs!

Yes, but that's not how Reg spelt it.

My point is, "I want to maximise the chance that an English speaker..." may sound more fancy, but it's still the exact same poll at heart.

No, it's not.

11:25 AM
Because there is no such thing as the English speaker.
Ask five people from around the world, you will get six answers.

The Queen
she can decide

Some people can't even read.

Nope. That's like arguing that you can't calculate the probability of drawing the jack of spades, because every pack of cards is different.

magic cards, tarot cards, WMT cards, ...

You can calculate that because you have exactly 52 cards.
You don't even know how many English speakers are out there.
So again, you'd be polling the twenty-odd people that would happen across this particular question on this particular site.

11:27 AM
The fact that I don't know what the number is doesn't mean that there ISN'T a number.

Anyways, I am forced to play Xblast, so we'll have to resume this at a later time.

And if I show the spelling "Nikolay" to every speaker of English in the world, some will give it the correct Russian pronunciation, and some will not.
I do the same for "Nikolai" and I get a different percentage.
Mr Dyankov wants to know which percentage is higher.

@RegDwightѬſ道 have fun!

@DavidWallace the thing is, even Николай can be pronounced in a number of ways. His pronunciation is just one possibility. Ask other speakers of Russian and they might produce something different.
Wevs. Xblast!

I strongly suspect that "Nikolai" will do better than "Nikolay", for the reasons I gave in my answer.
And if it's HIS name, then the way HE pronounces it is the correct one.
He even gave us a sound file, to tell us all what the way is. That should make the question extra easy to answer.

11:31 AM
Except that people started posting stuff like "Dzyankov".

Yeah, I thought "Dzyankov" was just weird. I strongly suspect that the dude who posted that is a pineapple.
and not just because Tsirunyan is such a traditional British-sounding surname.
Actually, I'm starting to doubt my earlier comment about everybody pronouncing their own name correctly. One boy at my secondary school had difficulty with the letter R. Unfortunately, his first name was Robert. Does this mean that the correct pronounciation of his name was "Wobbit", which was the best he could manage? (Sadly, his surname also began with R).

11:51 AM
You don't have to go that far. This guy's name is Nikolay. The tsar's name was also Nikolay. And there are tens of thousands of other Nikolays walking the face of the Earth right now. There's no question that they don't all pronounce their name exactly the same.
It's not his name. It's just a name. It's not a unique identifier.

that's why we're all given unique barcode tattoos at birth

@Anonymous It's pretty typical American English, but the woman is reading in a kind of condescending, poetic fashion that makes me want to punch her. She also has a minor speech impediment.
I would call it the NPR dialect of English (<—joke).

does she cut out halfway through and ask for a donation?

Hahaha
I didn't listen to the whole thing. She is really annoying.

hiya @KitFox :)

11:57 AM
Reminds me of the narrator of Caillou.
@MattЭллен Hiya.
So remember that whole me being pissed off about the meeting thing?

@KitFox yes

My boss sent an email yesterday, asking whether we met and could reschedule Monday.
The project lead and big boss both responded to him.

And the big boss wrote last night:
> No problem--we never updated it on the calendar, but in the end both B. and I were away that day. I'm free at the regular Monday meeting time next week.
To him. Not to me.
Neither them has yet so much as looked at me.

How discourteous

11:59 AM
Indeed.
