Hi =)

I went for concise definitions this time

A: What exactly does it mean for code to be "Working Code"?

PimgdCode works when it does that which was intended in full, not containing errors for expected input domain, with the exclusion of issues caused by external factors such as memory limitations.

I'm pretty sure someone is gonna find a loophole in it, but go ahead.

@Pimgd Does that cover code in question consisting of a single method? Because that cannot run on its own.

12:33 PM
does it need to run?
The code does what it was intended to do
you call that method and you get the expected output

@Pimgd Looks much better.

12:40 PM
Yeah, I had to get the definition out of my head first. It's kinda hard to formulate it like that in one absolute statement.
It's even a bit scary, considering I have nothing but "and that's what I think it should be" to back me up =D

Q: Array Implementation of Queue

Arun PrakashI've implemented the queue data structures using array in java. Anything I need to change in my code? Queue.java import java.util.Arrays; public class Queue<T> { private int front; private int rear; int size; T[] queue; public Queue(int inSize) { size = inSize; ...

T[] queue;
Ewwwwwwwwwwwww

@CaptainObvious is it just me or is that guy about the same as JavaDeveloper??

@Pimgd What's bad about that?
How do you want to do it otherwise?

... after thinking about it for a couple minutes (I wanted to post an answer about it)...
It's the lesser evil of a great many evils.
3
... basically, don't implement queues as arrays.

@JaDogg I somehow get the feeling seconds isn't a good measurement unit

Q: Code Review Graduation

rolflI am pleased to announce that effective from September 22, Code Review has graduated! It has taken a bit of time for this announcement to filter through the red tape, so, today was the day we found out. Let's use this as a place to discuss, celebrate, and otherwise commiserate. A: Array Implementation of Queue

PimgdYou have a memory hog when using a large queue. Because you store the object references and don't null them on retrieval, one could store a object reference to an object that references a great deal of other objects. Once I dequeue this object, it remains in your array and is not garbage collect...

12:52 PM
@Marc-Andre Porque?

What do you call a memory leak that's not a leak, but just keeps holding onto stuff for a long time? I went with memory hog but I'm not sure.

Well I'm not good to learn new speaking language! I can learn new programming language

@Pimgd memory hugger?
3

does the questions/answers still remain online after graduation ? I don't care about rep.

@skiwi as in .. tree face hugger?

12:54 PM
Memory needs more hugs, it's always being abused.

@JaDogg Yup. Wouldn't make much sense to get rid of all that awesomeness.
3
Maybe a meta is in order? "What changes post-graduation?"

New design that's the best change

@RubberDuck are you going to post one or should I ?

@RubberDuck That actually sounds like MSE should have you covered

@Marc-Andre privilege adjustments, migration by closing

12:57 PM
@Vogel612 Sure but the thing I'm most exited about is the new design !

@Marc-Andre yes I am curious, too..
maybe we can have some zombies?
3

@Vogel612 I guess... yes

What does <T> mean when it's applied to main?
public static <T> void main(String[] args)
You can't template the main method... or can you?

@RubberDuck There is a quesiton that is closely aligned with that: What are the advantages of graduation?

Attackers might be trying to steal your information from meta.codereview.stackexchange.com (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).
Wait what
what happened

1:00 PM
@JaDogg See this ^^^ maybe it answers your questions....

@Pimgd Good question, it might be useful if you call your main function somewhere else... but still weeiiiird

> You attempted to reach meta.codereview.stackexchange.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as *.stackexchange.com.

Did I paste an https link by mistake?

yeah
But why does it explode like that?

OK, there's a known issue with SE, https, and meta sites....
It's complicated, but, with certificates, you can 'wildcard' the URL the certificate applies to, like *.stackexchange.com

1:03 PM
Do *.stackexchange.com is different than *.*.stackexchange.com ?

So, one certificate applies to https://codereview.stackexchange.com and the same one applies to https://beer.stackexchange.com.
But, you cannot add another level to the domain, like meta.codereview.stackexchange.com and use the same certificate.
There's a blog post somewhere.... but, let me fix the link first.

@Marc-Andre that's illegal by specification. you may only use one leading wildcard, and that doesn't match dots.

Read this to understand: nickcraver.com/blog/2013/04/23/…

@Vogel612 I tried to mention the different level of domaine in fact which could be the cause for the error that pimgd is having but was not sure

@rolfl metacodereview.stackexchange.com and everyone was happy
Except the pedants. Pedants are never happy when you make changes like this.

@JaDogg I've actually gotta get some work done. Feel free, but @Pimgd is probably right. There should be something on MSE.

Given that I do stuff from work, and that I can see somewhat sensitive information, I decided recently to switch all my stackexchange activity to https.

@RubberDuck actually @rolfl's link answer my questions :D

I must now just remember to paste http content without the s.

Cool.

1:09 PM
Can I enable SE to use HTTPS by default

https works, but you have to accept exceptions to the certificates.
I am chatting now on https, for example.
@RubberDuck - that's a good meta question. Thanks, appreciate it.

@rolfl No problem.
Anyone have some tagz for this one?

Q: Golang HTTP status checker

PrydieI'm writing my first somewhat production ready (or not) Go program and could do with some feedback from someone more experienced with go. I have written part of a larger project, and this part consists of about 10 files. It is now in a state where it does what I want it to, but
- I'm kinda disappointed by the performance and
- it is - imho - too obfuscated to put it up here.
What should I do? Try to clean it up myself before going for CR, with the risk of breaking something yet again?

@Christoph Too messy? Isn't that what Code Review is for?

can Meta question be a hot question?

1:15 PM
Nope

If you're concerned about it, clean up your names, formatting, etc. The obvious stuff before posting it.

@RubberDuck welp obviously
@RubberDuck Can I post obfuscated code? I copied it from a decompiler and I'm working on it now and it works but I'd like CR to help me clean it up

@Pimgd Ohhhh....... idk. I didn't realize that.

@RubberDuck and 10 files is no problem? I can't believe that so much code wouldn't be tl;dr for literally anyone else

@Christoph I'd definitely split that up into multiple questions then.

1:19 PM
Measure in lines and printable characters, not files.

Q: How to make the following code more concise and elegant?

ReviousI've the following code. It checks if one column belong to the list I provide and after that it takes the value contained in it. I've tried and it's 9 times faster than raising and handling an exception. But I don't find this code very readable. For example I don't need to define a variable drs...

then I'd have to ask a "meta-question" about the performance of 10 individual question concatenated - also not really elegant

@CaptainObvious How to make my title more clear?

@Pimgd posting decompiled code..... not a normal thing for Code Review. My gut response would be to say "It's not your code".

▲▲

1:21 PM
@rolfl But the guy who wrote it has been gone for a year and I need to add features to it... and I don't have source. So I'm adding things onto decompiled sources and whilst I've cleaned some of it up, there's still quite a mess.
(This is from an actual hobby project that you don't wanna see)
We solved it differently though...
Someone wrote some C# code that reads the byte code and wraps it in pre- and post functions. You can add listeners to it and unhook the original functions. It's metaprogramming on a whole new level.

Why byte code and not Attributes(Annonations) ?

@Pimgd @RubberDuck 884 lines of code, making up for 56% of a total of 1565 lines. A total of about 26 kB (I don't know the exact number of printable characters)

@JaDogg Because said application is a flash application and I have no idea how you'd apply annotations there.

When you put it like that, I can understand your motivation.... it sounds really ugly though. Remember, Code Review is about suggesting improvments, not making improvements. If you posted decompiled code, I would just say: "change your variable names, fix the style, improve the functions, right now it is essentially not understandable"
2

@Christoph we've had worse..

1:27 PM
@Pimgd sorry I thought it was C#

Which is something you know already.... so, what's the value add?
3

@rolfl Improve the functions how? That's the value add, I think.

rename, etc.

@Vogel612 being less bad than the worse shouldn't be the goal to aim for

@Christoph but it's a good start I think

1:28 PM
@Pimgd You can expect a Code Review review to start from the most obvious issues first.... you need to clear those out of the way if you want the more 'deep' issues reviewed.
If readability is the main problem, then expect a review about readability.

Well for my case I luckily don't have to deal with that... the idea of wrapping functions with proxies was a godsend for altering the application. But for a while the community was like "let's rewrite it by using a decompiler!"

Anyone want to talk to a new user about what makes for a good answer?
0
A: Better way to group elements?

Steve MichaelYou could do something like this: var groupedList = this.Items.GroupBy(i => i.Attributes["category"]) .Select(g =>new { Name = g.Key, Items = g.ToList()}) .ToList(); Is that along the lines of what you're looking for?

I applied "Have you compiled with -Os?" to my performance problem and it improved by a factor of 19. It's these tips that I need.

It does not pour apple juice.

That's actually not as bad a project name as you would imagine. My music partner names projects like "project1", "project2", "project3", etc.

@Phrancis how.. enlightening ;-)

then you have two options:
- rename it
- make applejuice an acronym

@Mat'sMug Thank you!

@RubberDuck Sometime suffixing class name with Impl in Java is conventionnal :S

@DanPantry Long time no chat

> Disclaimer: I'm not a Java guy

2:25 PM
@Christoph yep

@RubberDuck I know that's why I mention in chat, this is not a case where Impl make sense since it's a test not a real impl.

I know GD, but as the logo already works I thought it would be a better candidate for a review site

@Marc-Andre That sounds like a really dumb convention to me. What is Impl for?

I just realized that I've been writing JAVA (not Java) for past few months.

@Vogel612 is it case-insensitive?

2:27 PM
@JaDogg bhahahahhahahahhahaa

Accidentally called a woman in my office 40
She is 33

@Pimgd gi-flags. global and case-insensitive..

@RubberDuck Well when you make services, will mostly call the implementation impl. I don't have an actual example at the moment

@DanPantry you are beyond help.

@JaDogg svn?

2:30 PM
@Pimgd haha

@DanPantry lol
2

@RubberDuck In Java you don't prefix an interface with I but give it a name like e.g. Server if you have a class that implements the interface Server this class will be named ServerImpl

Alternatively you can create an abstract-sounding noun as an interface name, and a more specific noun for the implementation
interface Writer to class StringWriter implements Writer

@Heslacher Seriously?? That feels.... backwards. Instead of having one oddly named class, you have N oddly named classes???

@DanPantry like Stack?? yea that worked...

2:33 PM
@Vogel612 it doesn't work in all circumstances I grant you

@DanPantry Yeah. That's much better.

@RubberDuck I didn't invent this style

Alternatively, turn on your type colouring in your IDE
I have dark green for interfaces and light blue for classes

@Heslacher Oh no. I know. I'm just kinda shocked by it. Feels odd.
Feels like Microsoft recommending Hungarian notation for VB6.

It does require the least amount of thought I suppose

2:34 PM
@DanPantry Need to check mine IDE next time I need to use Java

@Heslacher most of the more popular IDEs support it
like Eclipse
Also visual studio has a similar option for you .NETters

I use Netbeans. Need to check the options there

@RubberDuck Well looks like the impl is a silly convention at work after all

Is there anyone who happens to know Standard ML and/or CPN Tools?

Nope
TTGH Bye @all

o/
been working on this most of the afternoon. Just converts markdown into html and displays it when you visit /url#/posts/. So seemingly simple, so much time

2:42 PM
@DanPantry does it also convert ascii tables to HTML tables

@JaDogg it uses a 3rd party markdown library - possibly. Lemme give it a whack

@Marc-Andre Yeah. I'm a big proponent of "Just because that's the way it's always been, doesn't make it right."
2

I'm getting more and more determined to allow users/modders to use almost any language they want in Cardshifter...
I so hate coming into a new environment and looking at their own they invented

@skiwi but that's coding.

@Pimgd No, that is torture

2:45 PM
@JaDogg it appears to treat this

In this case there was no reason to invent a new language...

|   |   |   |   |   |
|---|---|---|---|---|
|   |   |   |   |   |
|   |   |   |   |   |
|   |   |   |   |   |
as a literal string

You build functions to do domain related things and then you build functions on top of that
and eventually it becomes a language of sorts

@JaDogg yeah seemingly tables aren't being parsed correctly unless I am doing something wrong

@DanPantry AH
@DanPantry It's extended markdown and github flavored markdown, any way tablesgenerator.com/markdown_tables

2:53 PM
@JaDogg actually this parser does support Maruku which is why I'm wondering it isn't parsing maruku tables

@DanPantry don't worry about it
@DanPantry wait in that case worry about it

lol
2

However you can always include <table> directly

@RubberDuck do you know any way to make Access save the formatting of your SQL query?

@JaDogg yeah I could, just don't want to

2:55 PM
IIRC, Access does not allow indentation.....

The idea is that the MarkDown editor allows you to not write HTML
						'### An interesting table\n\n' +
						'Header  | Header\n\n'+
						'------- | -------\n\n' +
						'Content | Content\n\n'
parses the header correct, just not the table. sorry for significant whitespace.

@Phrancis Huh? What do you mean?

(And yes that string is composed in JS)

@Phrancis there's always Notepad++ if you want to export coloured RTF
@DanPantry have fun

@RubberDuck Yeah I agree with you. So it looks it had it's reasons at some point in the past but now it's just an habit (and you can use *impl to find an implementation).

2:56 PM
ah damn. it's been using the Gruber dialect and not the Maruku dialect

@Mat'sMug No, some other sites were announce after that......
chemistry, and some others.
Also, some of those already have their 'colors'.

Salesforce is done. Looks like the others are still beta-looking.

@rolfl Can't you make a SEDE query for that?

Nope.

There is also Music.SE that was announced... last week?

What I can do is look for Caucus badges in the database, and that allows me to see which sites have had an election.
With that info, I know which sites have graduated.... but not when.
I was just thinking that there's only about 10 sites that need to be identified, have some dates put to them, and then we can follow through and keep things somewhat updated as they happen....
Will require some digging.....

How cute is this...

Q: The 100 game - CanIWin()

CCP/* In "the 100 game," two players take turns adding, to a running total, any integer from 1..10. The player who first causes the running total to reach or exceed 100 wins. What if we change the game so that players cannot re-use integers? For example, if two players might take turns drawing f...

does R questions usually end up being zombies ?

@rolfl What can I do to help?

3:09 PM
@JaDogg My colleague uses R and he hates it when that happens :(

@rolfl looks like the Badges table has a Date column. If that helps.

anyone want to make sure I didn't hork up a C# answer?

A: How to make the following code more concise and elegant?

MalachiI am going to extend Steve's answer a little bit as I see something that would make his code short and to the point. I think Heslacher hit on Ternary statements as well. in Steve's answer he has this String columnName = "IDAgentClient"; bool columnEmpty = IsColumnEmpty(columnName); if (column...

@Phrancis Time to migrate all of Stack Overflow to Code Review!

@RubberDuck I figure we just need to complete, and fill in the details on the above table.
There are missing sites, and there's missing data, but I figure the idea will help....

IMO that should be on MSE, and maintained by SE

@Mat'sMug I saw Penut's answer on your SQL question. In the end, which solution allowed you to gain close to 4 minutes exec time?

Nice
You've earned the "Nice Answer" badge (Answer score of 10 or more) for "Code Review Graduation".

3:18 PM
@Phrancis I was missing a bunch of columns in a join.......
and more like 5 minutes
Stupid I know

Looks like SE needs more community managers ;)
Wait, didn't they hire an extra one a few weeks ago?

The invoice details aren't unique by HeaderId+LineNumber, that threw me off
I needed to include all the FK's in the join too

wtf did I just read?!
Colonel-in-Chief Sir Nils Olav is a King Penguin living in Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland. He is the mascot and Colonel-in-Chief of the Norwegian Royal Guard. Nils was visited by soldiers from the Norwegian Royal Guard on 15 August 2008 and awarded knighthood. The honour was approved by King Harald V. During the ceremony a crowd of several hundred people joined the 130 guardsmen at the zoo to hear a citation from the King read out, which described Nils as a penguin "in every way qualified to receive the honour and dignity of knighthood". The name 'Nils Olav' has also been given to two other King Penguins...

@Phrancis I gave him the checkmark because it was the only answer to suggest a temp table, but my performance issue was a stupidity on my part :(

I would love to spend all day reviewing Code! and helping a community

As Stack Exchange continues to expand to serve new audiences, we’re constantly on the lookout for folks who can take the principles and practices we all hold dear and communicate them effectively to the folks who would otherwise find them strange and difficult. I’m happy to announce we’ve found another of these rare specimens in the form of Joshua Maciel:

Josh joins us remotely from beautiful Kansai Japan, where youthful ignorance brought him for a two-year stay (maximum!) to teach English. Eleven years later he still hasn’t left, having found gainful employment doing internat …

oh yeah I read that a while ago.

and I'm truncating the destination table too, so no need for updates. oh it just finished - 5:39 to insert 616010 rows; 1817 rows / second.

Not bad!
This is ironic. The guy that got the data analytics job I applied for, came to me asking me questions on making his query work in Access.

A: What should our logo and site design look like?

PleaseStandA magnifying glass on top of some bad code? If anyone is wondering, the code behind the magnifying glass is: #include <stdio.h> int main() {int n=101, x; for(x=0;++x<n;) printf(!(x % 15) ? "FizzBuzz\n" : !(x % 3) ? "Fizz\n" : !(x % 5) ? "Buzz\n" : "%d \n", x); return 0;}

I like @kleinfreund's version most
This assignment I need to do about business information systems is interesting, but the programming is horrible

This one caught my eye the most

One conditional (in square brackets) is: d=hd it andalso length ps < 15
shudders

@Phrancis Yeah. I like that.

That tests if the destination (d) is equal to the head (hd) of the itinerary (it) and that also the length of the list of persons (ps) is smaller than 15
I know the process is not finished btw ;-)
