A: Asynchronous Server Sockets - Thread-Safety/Performance (MMO Gaming)

MalachiCouple of things Magic Number #1 // Data buffer for incoming data. byte[] bytes = new Byte[1024]; This could be something like int bufferSize = 1024; byte[] bytes = new byte[bufferSize]; upon further inspection we see that this byte array isn't even used in the containing method, we sho...

@Malachi if you are extracting magic numbers, at least extract them to constants...

7:15 PM
@Vogel612 alright alright
lol

D00de I see it coming, how the constant is suddenly different after calling method asdfBorkThingsUp()

@SimonAndréForsberg or I guess we could call it LOLCASE

And when you use number in your variable like temp1 and temp2 it's 1337Case

I've seen SQL scripts written in yell case... very hard to read.

that code isn't very well organized, there is a socket in the Player class and then they open a new socket outside of that one. I am guessing there is overlap of sockets somewhere there
@Phrancis Keywords are always YELLCASE

7:18 PM
SELECT FOO FROM MYTABLE WHERE VALUE = 'BAR'
I usually write in lazycase it's annoying to constantly tap the caps lock back & forth ;-)

@Phrancis that is bad

@Phrancis Henceforth. SCREAMING_CASE will be known as LOLCASE.

back to my fun VBScript/MSXML/XPath Problem

I don't care what the T-SQL convention says, I use minicase for keywords anyway. My eyes constantly thank me for it.

@Mat'sMug awww, thank you

@RubberDuck COBOLCASE was there before LOLCASE.

it's also my 400th day on CodeReview

@rolfl TS

Grats on that, Malachi

@rolfl bUT cOBOLcASE WAS SOOOOO LAST dECADE.

aCTUALLY, cobolcase WAS LAST CENTURY.

I'm out of stars....
@Mat'sMug Nope, just lazy.
Y u so slow Access?

My nose is skew. Hmmm. Not something I can easily fix

wtf got hit or something?

I am wearing this Diamond hat, and, as luck would have it, my parents stayed with us recently, and my mothe rused my work desk to help with her makeup in the mornings.
I know that sounds like it's from left field, but....
I put a mirror on the wall for her, so now I am sitting here in front of a mirror, with the mod hat on.

and your nose doesn't line up with the tip of the diamond??

lol

and I can't get the peak, my eyes, and my nose to all line up at the same time.

@RubberDuck actually... probably not.

I should have done it this morning while it was fresh in my mind, but then they distracted me with "something more important".
So, even though I agree with you... if it's not important....

@Mat'sMug Good work. Feels like you are really catching up.
I'm only at +109 today, don't think I'll make it to 200.

although when looking at the voter pages, it looks quite alright...

I know I don't, but I contribute in other ways, I hope. I do vote on most of what I read, but my reading is more directed to the exception cases now.
200 and Jamal go out of their way to edit. I am, by the numbers, far behind them on that.

Holy crap. I'm making my wife listen to this podcast... I'm officially distracted now.
I don't think I can listen to this while I work anymore.

@RubberDuck Listen to your wife or listen to the podcast?

The podcast @SimonAndréForsberg.
And yes, it is not safe for work.

Counting how I calculated how many study points I can maximally get: 75 + 54 + 12 + 30 != 180
Great :|

You think CR voting is bad, take a look at DBA. @rolfl do you have a magic query for vote counts across a site?

I have a query for individual's vote counts, not aggregate
I can see your vote count on all sites ;-) SHould not be hard to adapt.

Link? I'll fork it and modify

I recommend "The Sensorium"

2048 feels too simple...
@StackExchange Good Morning to you too.
I think I'll go for a UTTT

Minesweeper?

Ah, Minesweeper!
Of course, Minesweeper!
Can I make it multiplayer? Can I, can I, can I!?
Heck, I could perhaps even make it do AJAX calls to my webserver to make it calculate probabilities and stuff... Does Stack Snippet support AJAX?

That's it, I'm learning JS!
TTQW - later @all!

Well, it has jQuery. I don't know if there are cross-domain issues.

10:10 PM
@mods where's the [featured] tag on that one?! :)

Although, if I make a very good Minesweeper clone here as a stack-snippet, I might lose some traffic from my own site. I don't want to compete with myself, do I?
I'd better not make it too good. And perhaps only singleplayer...
Ummm... how to create a 16x16 grid?

A <table> would work.

I'll probably make it a table... so that someone can complain that I'm using tables :)

10:25 PM
Hmm...
how do I create an anonymous inner listener?
I got the listener up and working
but the variables has the wrong value...
hmm...
ah, wait a minute.... I'll use data tags or something...
The shift-button is not working for selecting sometimes, that's quite annoying

@rolfl somewhat... I only have my mobile right now and watching a google talk by linus thorvalds, but that aside how can I help you??
I must admit I didn't actually test the code provided there but from writing and thinking it through I was pretty sure it'd work....

10:41 PM
Stack Snippets does not seem to support the 'let' keyword btw. or perhaps it's my browser...

Stop using IE6.

Q: Implementation of a method by using recursion

VíctorThe method name is: public static int longestSequence(int[] T) { ... } For example: We define a table, int[] T = {1,2,5,1,7,8,9,10,1,5,6,9,12,23,28}; The longest sequence of numbers increasing would be 1,5,6,9,12,23,28 => so the method would return 7, which is the length of this sequence. I...

and Salesforce just graduated, the list is in some sort of order.

Code Review is BBF. Best Beta Forever.

@Morwenn don't you dare call it out!!

10:46 PM
@Vogel612 Even after graduation, CR will still be beta in my heart.

@rolfl concerning my answer.. am I correct in thinking I'd have to use Integer#getIntValue ()?

No, that's not the problem.

The incorrect increment aside, that is.

The problem is that ++ is required in an assignment context... and...
the first time through the loop, the get() will return null, which cannot be cast to an int

So I could cast it to an Integet, and call .getIntValue on that. This again should return 0 for null.

10:48 PM
No, you can't call getIntValue on a null instance

Q: Bouncing stacking boxes in javascript

TomDemo on paper js sketch I'm not sure if it would be better to make the envelope into an extension of the Rectangle constructor. The physics seem a bit dodgy, it works well most of the time, but sometimes the boxes overlap and sometimes the bouncing doesn't work properly. var envelopeHeight = 1...

You have to first check for null, then assign 1 if null, or (int)val + 1 if not, or alternatively prepopulate all levels with a 0 value.

Q: What is the purpose of a Code Review

ChadI am in the process of trying to sell my organisation on the value of code reviews. I have worked at several places where they were employed. I have seen them used to nitpick styling choices, and functional decisions, and I have seen them used as nothing more than a gut check to make sure nothi...

Hmm. The better solution then would be to go for a ternary or even pulling the increment calculation out to a local variable with ternary, right?

10:57 PM
Okay @rolfl I think I got it fixed... If I don't hear back from you in the next 30 minutes I assume it fixed and will head to bed ;)

I think this JS code of mine will be quite dirty. But it's more or less on purpose, so that it will be easy to answer and perhaps score Hot Question

Shame on you...

Q: Input on where and how I can make improvements on my randomizer

ZFN7As my title states I'm just looking for a little input on how I can improve one of my side projects when I'm not doing my CS assignments. All my program is, is a primitive randomizer for Battlefield 4 classes and weapons (because I can never choose what to play). But since I am still new to java ...

I am getting old... never knew Google Maps was a few-liners.

So, in the end, my prediction on the sizes of the new phones was right.
My prediction being that while they'll be a bigger size, they won't be a new aspect ratio. They'll match one of the three existing aspect ratios.
And the good news is, they're the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5. Won't be that long before the iPhone 5 is the oldest phone, and I only have to worry about 2 layouts again,.

$1K for a phone... they're nuts...

And even that will become easier with iOS8.

11:39 PM
And given they're getting huge, I will not purchase another one..... which is a pity.
I actually do talk on my phone...
Anyway, this one is cool.

Hmm.. should snippets be shown by default? Should they replace "normal" code blocks? When you click on "show code snippet", the post has the same code twice...

It's a good question. I can't figure out how to put "Headers" in between the different portions.
Maybe we can't do that right now, but we should request it if not.
Thinking about it a little more @Mat'sMug, what if OP just wants feedback about his JavaScript, but not his HTML, then it makes sense to hide the snippet.
And duplicate the Javascript.

Putting headers between blocks could be baked into the feature. I tried doing that too, doesn't work.

11:56 PM
This shit is seriously buggy!
I pressed Ctrl + Shift + End to select all and all the code was replaced with a single '-'
luckily, Ctrl + Z twice fixed the issue
