@Mast we don't have community ads

@Mat'sMug I know.
But the candidates aren't many.

we'll fix that shortly :)

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 2015

200_successNow that your community has entered into design independent graduation, I can co-opt this existing thread and turn it into an official Community Ads thread. Please note that there have been some changes to the requirements for ads. What are Community Promotion Ads? Community Promotion Ads are c...

Do you know what adds to ad? Code::Blocks and KompoZer.

5:02 PM
@Gustavo6046 Feel free to propose them, but I don't think they're going to make it.
@Gustavo6046 Read the question first, thoroughly.
@Mat'sMug Did you see my mug yet?

huh?
where?

hmm
looks stretched

except the squashed part, it looks cool

Yea, it's a first prototype.

5:04 PM
also should you be worried about using logos that are SE property?
like I don't really know much about it but still

Yes and no.

just don't go and sell it

Right, can't make a profit

@Mat'sMug Exactly.

In that case let me go and 3D print the logo and mail you all one

Zak
5:06 PM
NARL, but, using their IP without their permission leaves you open to being sued. So, all you have to do is not do something that'll make them want to sue you.

@Zak Yep. So don't do anything stupid.
I'm pretty sure they're not going to sue for this, especially since I'm not even close to the USA.

Zak
They could sue you for ordering your own. But they probably wouldn't. You start organising/distributing them, with or without profit, and they just might.

crap, all I have is this

@Zak So don't distribute them. Just distribute the information required to make/get/buy one.

I think if you were going to distribute them, they'd rather you contact them and let them sort it

5:08 PM

Zak
@Mast That's how I'd do it

only got saved because it's on GitHub
maybe I have the base .pdn on my laptop

@Mat'sMug are community ads for tags acceptable?

@Quill They are if they are community projects.

site tags

5:09 PM
The tag is irrelevant.

also @SimonForsberg where's Duga's community ad?

not sure why @Duga would need an ad though

well idk
I guess people could go to take a look at what Duga is, go to contribute
I mean she's active on how many sites, four or five?

I made the Code::Blocks ad image, do you guys want me to show it?

sure

5:12 PM

@Gustavo6046 Did you read the question?
You didn't read the question.

Yup, the image rules.

and part about the relevancy of the actual ads?

They should be relevant to reviewing code
I should add one about PEP8

Code::Blocks eases sifting through code.
It highlightes the code, let's the user open and close braced if's and functions, i.e. it's how I'll review and how many people should review.

5:14 PM
@Gustavo6046 That last part is utter bull, in all fairness.
People should review how they want to review.
Regardless of what IDE they use, if any.

if we used the community github page more we could add one for that too

@Quill Isn't that page still looking for a purpose?

@Quill Nowhere? Also, I'm definitely not a graphic designer. I was considering an ad for Brainduck as well, but I think there's not that many people who would be interested in Brainfuck :) I think the same probably applies to @Duga.

Fair enough @SimonForsberg

5:16 PM
What's Brainduck anyway? an OSS BF IDE?

@Quill She's reading SO comments, posting to CR + Programmers + Software Recs.

@Mat'sMug yup

three posting, four reading. thanks for clarifying @Simon

I use GIMP very well. Let me help sirs.

5:17 PM
Thanks but no thanks, @Gustavo6046.

why is tough questions, smart answers not on the tshirt thread

@SimonForsberg you'd be surprised, I'm sure many people are interested in contributing to build an IDE, regardless of the language

@Mat'sMug I always though Brainduck was a language.

@Mat'sMug writing Python...?

@Quill good question. make it happen!
not my ad

5:18 PM
@Quill well... she's not really reading anything on the other sites

Wow it's time for me to lunch guys...

I am not convinced that Code Review should promote or condone the eating of elephants. — 200_success ♦ Jul 20 '15 at 0:02

we ran a "contest" a while back on our meta to determine what ad would be posted on other sites' community ads thread

@SimonForsberg my words are failing me, I understand what you mean

5:19 PM
@Gustavo6046 This isn't Facebook, please remember that
3

it means I'll have to go soon

eh, "TFL" does it

@Gustavo6046 Brainfuck is the language, Brainduck is my IDE for it

:I
Someone said something...

@Mat'sMug I think people are interested in making an IDE, but not interested in Brainfuck.

5:21 PM
the actual language is a very very small part of making an IDE

The people on PPCG like Brainfuck, but it is indeed a play/learn/fun language

I like WhiteSpace more I think
you get an actual heap

ok, TFL now

@Mat'sMug You make an ad for me, I'll be happy to put it up
Please don't make the language name even worse than it already is, @Gustavo6046

@SimonForsberg if you want an ad I can whip one up fairly quickly, the question is: What do you want it to say?

5:23 PM
@Phrancis if banging your head against the wall counts as fun...
5

lol

"Real languages need a real IDE"?

0
A: Let's pick t-shirt tagline!

QuillTough questions, Smart answers From the old community ad:

@Phrancis ummm... "Out with the f*ck in with the duck"? No, I don't know..

@SimonForsberg uh, no
lol

5:26 PM
Exactly... I also didn't like mine

Even esoteric languages deserve good dev environments

that's a good one, @Quill

@SimonForsberg The exclusive BF IDE.

Or something like "Making the world's hardest language a million times easier"

or s/dev environments/IDEs

5:28 PM
@Hosch250 there are plenty of BF IDEs

Are there? I thought they were just interpreters.

what's different about that one?
@Hosch250 your google-fu needs training ;-)

I think I have google-fu on my CV

@Mat'sMug I don't look up things I'm not interested in.
2

@SimonForsberg what are a few characters that you would commonly see at the end of a BF program? (like 3-4 chars)

5:32 PM
Hello, I would suggest removing the question since this site is not about reviewing code that works. There is a different website for this - codereview.stackexchage.com — Alex 36 secs ago

@Phrancis ] is the most common one I believe

@Phrancis >>.]

or .
@Mat'sMug I'd more say .>>]
or .>-]

his may be a good question for Code Review, so long as: (A) the code works, and (B) it's not hypothetical or incomplete in any way. Please read the on-topic guide before posting, if you choose to go to Code Review. If you have any questions or concerns, join us at our CR Help Desk. — Quill 5 secs ago

why shift after output? oh, da loop.. nevermind.

5:33 PM
@Mat'sMug I'm happy to hear that you know enough about Brainfuck that you agree that this actually makes sense :)

:)
sounds inefficient though, it leaves a shift operation dangling for nothing at the end of the loop

user image
4

love the tagline, but I'd add a "contribute!" link or something

@Phrancis lol

(mind the borders, those would not be visible)

5:36 PM
@Mat'sMug dangling at the end of the loop? What do you mean?

output,shift,end - there should be a way to make it end with output,end

@Mat'sMug but then the loop condition is the same as the value you outputted, which is probably not what you want

this is why I don't BF
@Quill might want to make an ad for the CR Help Desk chatroom

Not yet^^

yeah, we haven't decided whether it's going to be a thing yet
by we I mean meta

5:39 PM
if it's going to be a thing, I mean
anyway, new ad size will be 300x250

@Phrancis Maybe "Simple languages needs complicated IDEs"
(the language design is simple, but making something in it is terribly hard)

even complicated languages need complicated IDEs works too

"difficult languages needs powerful IDEs"?

@SimonForsberg ^^ How's that for a start? (yes, I copied the end of your FizzBuzz program)

it's an okay start
although [-]<<< should perhaps be something like [-]+++ or at least some > in there
and I'm not a super-big fan of that tagline

5:45 PM
Okay

because [-]<<< looks like it's the program beginning, and then < makes no sense

Here is the text, just change it how you will and paste it back:
[-]<<< Your head
.>>> and your wall
+[-<+]- will
<<] thank you

I like the tagline

Q: Renaming the "I'm having this problem too" Low Quality flag reason

QuillWhen voting on the Low Quality Queue, you can see this deletion reason:: This is more of a reason suited to Stack Overflow. Perhaps we could change it?

(note I moved the non-BF part to all be on the right of the BF)

5:49 PM
Code: [->-[>+>>]>[+[-<+>]>+>>]<<<<<] or is that too much BF code?

I can make it fit

Tagline: "Difficult languages needs powerful IDEs"

I like that^
@SimonForsberg Can you break it down over a few lines, say 4-5?

Now make a BF program that outputs the project's GitHub URL and put the program in the background in a light shade of gray

That BF code is a "divmod" algoirthm btw, calculating a / b and a % b at the same time. Incredibly useful.

5:51 PM
Good idea Mug

@Mat'sMug that might be a bit too long BF code...

It might be interesting to have some purposely bad BF code that is marked up based on the IDE's recommendations.

[->-[>+>>]
>[+[-<+>]
>+>>]
<<<<<]
How's that, @Phrancis?

@SimonForsberg just for a stylish background I'd say

Danke

5:53 PM
@Phrancis make it 300x250

[->-[>+>>] Difficult
>[+[-<+>]  languages
>+>>]      need
<<<<<]     powerful IDEs
@Mat'sMug OK
Oh damn that's a lot wider

+++++[->+++++++++++++++++++
    >++++++++
    >+++++++++++++++++++++
    >++++++++++++
    >++++++++++++++++++++++
<<<<<]>+++++++++>+++++++>++++++>++++++
>+++++<<<<.>>>>..<<.>>-.<.<<..<-.++.>>>>+.
<<<<-.>>>>+.<<<<------.>-.<+.>>-.--.<+.<---------.
>>++.--.----.>>--.<<<.>>++++++++.>-.<<<<+++++++.

Make an ad for the help center.

@Mat'sMug that's the code to output the URL ^^
[->-[>+>>]
>[Difficult +[-<+>]
languages >+>>]
need <<<<<]
powerful IDEs
@Phrancis is using another line acceptable?
feel free to change the positioning of the BF code, the line breaks doesn't matter

@SimonForsberg Sure
[->-[>+    Difficult
   >>]     languages
>[+[-<+>]  need
>+>>]      powerful
<<<<<]     IDEs
How's that^

looks okay to me

@SimonForsberg Do you want a small border around the ad?

@Phrancis maybe. don't know. I would like to see the ad being filled up with something more graphical though, not just text, but not sure what that could be

Since you are merely asking for advice on how to stylistically improve your code, you may consider moving your question to codereview.stackexchange.com Other than that, I would advice you to improve the signal/noise ratio in your code examples. I see a lot of stuff unrelated to your problem while it remains unclear where getShapes() actually gets its data from (i.e. where is the variable shapes defined?). — morido 16 secs ago

@Phrancis I like it
but I don't like the font at the top and bottom

OK, I have hundreds of fonts, do you have any suggestion?

maybe space it up a little bit at the top? (like more like a logo or something) And use some other font at bottom
some non-serif font

@Gustavo6046 Pro tip, a constant stream of comments about what you're doing/thinking/whatever right now is rarely something that other people will find funny/interesting/informative.

@Phrancis RD uses SHOWCASE

What's the standard non-serif font for web?

No idea

I used to know...
Arial, Helvetica, MS Trebuchet, and Verdana.

6:44 PM
Really?
Right

Tahoma is common too.

Arial is just lame though

Yeah Tahoma wins over Arial. I'm using it for my SSRS reports at work

I like Arial and MS Trebuchet.
I dislike Tahoma.

6:46 PM
@SimonForsberg Papyrus? Comic Sans?

#no-exact-opinion

I used to like using IMPACT or ARIAL BLACK for these things. I went with SHOWCASE for RD because it looked more... bubbly
Is the emphasis more on the brain or on the duck?

hmm.... I guess the emphasis is on the similarity between "Brainfuck" and "Brainduck"
It looks like I might have @Mat'sMug to thank for the name "Brainduck":
in VBA Rubberducking, Mar 1 '15 at 19:47, by Mat's Mug
writing BrainDuck?
that's the first time "BrainDuck" was written on SE chat

I was writing an answer to a Javascript question and found out that javascript is perfectly happy with dividing a number by a function!

>>> function foo() {}
undefined
>>> 1 / foo
NaN

This is madness...
7

7:02 PM
Well... in a way I'm with JavaScript on this one, 1/foo is definitely not a number.
But this also makes me happy to use a statically typed language where something like that would make the compiler yell at me

@Phrancis (Alternatively you could also consider using an easier language)

@Mat'sMug Blasphemy! Arial is amazing.

@SimonForsberg One of the good things about learning C as a first language.

Or... umm... I was almost going to say Java, but I mean Delphi of course
but yeah, any language with a decent compiler

@SimonForsberg does haskell count then?

7:42 PM
I wonder if there's any programmer out there that learned Brainfuck as the first language.

Probably not MSL then...

@Vogel612 I guess it does. Even though functional programming is very different from imperative programming

it's yelling at you, but I have serious problems understanding what it wants from me :/

Yup, that I also tend to have...

That's what I thought first couple of times I got stack traces thrown at me. Got used to it.

7:44 PM
although when writing my most recent Haskell question, I actually did manage to understand what it wanted me

I'm slowly beginning to understand what wants from me.
And apparently it wants a lot.

@EBrown It wants your brains

I'm still having issues with thinking functionally.
But, I'm getting better at it.
I just have to remind myself that functions have exactly one input, and exactly one output.
(Which explains currying.)

Zak
currying?

it's a little "strange" concept, but that's how you build functions with multiple arguments

7:58 PM
Applying a function with n arguments to n - 1 arguments creates another function
@Zak it is no sorcery really, even Python has it

@Caridorc Python.

@skiwi languages that support first class functions should also support currying
if they don't implementation becomes either trivial through desugaring or nontrivial because you have to mess around with closures
JS supports it natively btw.

@Mast not extensively, but each powerful feature has its usage.

no wait it doesnt...

Though if we're writing it in a particular language it looks like we are favoring that one :/
