@StackExchange yaaaay just in the last row!
sheeesh I used to be in the third or something...

IIRC they email everyone on those pages
and for those who don't respond, it goes on
so the tshirt slightly changed

@StackExchange Damn it, it was a just a sticker?! I thought that Tesla was the swag!
2

wow, Ebrown just made the cut, and skiwi just didn't...

yeah

@janos I worked hard for that one, man.
It came down to the wire.

3:06 PM
I know!

Also, working on Revision II of Markdown Markup Editor.

> If you're not on the list, don't worry too much about it — we've got some extra swag stored we can send to you for events and such.
Additionally the people on the list have 2 weeks to respond
for those who don't it will go down the line

@janos That's... pretty close

@skiwi you're third page rep man, you may not get site swag! you should do an answer streak to get to second page!

I don't care that much for swag though :P Maybe once I live on my own ^^
Then I can wear swag without getting questions :D

3:08 PM
I wear my Stack Exchange T-Shirt at work on occasion.

Hi guys

hello

Hello @Gustavo6046

I updated the code from one of my questions in codereview, it's on ubuntu paste: paste.ubuntu.com/14420534 should I start a new question or edit the existing one?

@Quill but then you're cheering against EBrown :-/

3:10 PM
Actually, I'd rather EBrown work on an answer streak as well
There's a few page two users that aren't necessarily regulars just have lots of answers

the original code is the "Super Simple C++ HTML Tag Making Code v0.1" or something like that

@Gustavo6046 Post a follow-up question

Q: C++ Super Simple HTML Tag Generating Code v0.1

Gustavo6046I made this simple code which makes easy HTML tag generation. It is open-source and right now only makes tag names and replaces tags... :/ #include <iostream> #include <fstream> std::string makeHtmlTags(std::string tagname, std::string tagcontent) { return "<" + tagname + ">" + tagcontent + "<

I'm currently working on [badge:socratic].

who did saw the new code in ubuntu pastebin? (#include fstream is a reserved include for the future)
#include <fstream>*

Q: angularJS - changing page language using a service

Miha ŠušteršičI'm rebuilding a basic webpage using AngularJS, and want to implement changing languages when clicking an icon. So far I've build a service called 'langService', that has functions to set and get language. I then pass the service a value (say 'eng' or 'slo') with the set language function when cl...

btw how to do a follow-up question? is it just making a normal question about the updated code, with a different version number?

just add a link to the earlier revision in the new question

ok thanks guys, you are the best :)

yeah, but some of us are page 1 and page 2 best, and some of us are only page 5 best.. *cries*

@DanPantry My feels.

3:15 PM
hang on @Gustavo6046 searching for the link for you, 1sec

There's no rep in regular

HI JNAT!!

Hi @JNat!

Hey!

hello megaman
3

3:16 PM
105 minutes later, I'm done with "less than 5 minutes to sign up online".
2

is it a coincidence that the colours of the shirt are the same colours as your avatar @jnat? ;-)

@Mat'sMug Revision II of Markdown Markup Editor posted.

@DanPantry It is

hey @JNat!
you came to merge some more users? (just kidding)

3:18 PM
I want merged!

@EBrown it usually takes 2+ crap users

@JNat if some of the users you email do not respond or say no, you offer rep down the chain, yeah?

@janos Ah, well then I'll make another user and make myself crap.
@StackExchange Could someone sticky this?

@Quill I came here precisely 'cause I saw your message above stating that :P
Nope.

@EBrown Your wish is my command

3:20 PM
oh, that's a shame

Zak
Well, I guess I can take solace in the fact that I would've had to rep-cap every single day over christmas to have made it.
But I want one of those ducks

I suppose that makes sense, in that after two weeks, offering more users takes more time

@Zak +1. I need that duck.

(I honestly had thought they had already done the Page 1/2 user rep swag.)

@JNat it would be a pity if non-regulars don't bother to claim their swag, while very much regulars miss out

3:21 PM
I would really have liked to see a zombie-themed mug with the CR logo on it too

@janos Their swap? ^^

thanks @skiwi, corrected

@JNat I guess the CR theme-reminding squares were dropped for costing reasons, but what about the early-version logo, it went to print before the logo was finalized?

Q: Markdown Markup Editor: MK2

EBrownFollowing on from this question I have added some more functionality to Markdown Markup, and made it more WPF idiomatic. It now supports saving data from any of the four boxes, and loading Markdown or CSS files. Everything seems to work, so as always, any tips/pointers/critique is/are welcome. ...

Q: C++ Not-So-Simple Entire HTML Generating Code v0.3

Gustavo6046As a follow-up to my code's v0.1 revision, we now introduce V0.3, with capability for storage of attributes and a struct for each HTML tag! Just start the struct, call it's functions, change it's variables then use <fstream> to make the complete HTML file using generateHTML()! (53 lines! Now I a...

holy feed spam

3:22 PM
@JNat maybe this is an answer you cannot necessarily answer, but where does this fit in with the priorities of sending event swag and other sites' swag

@janos Hmm, I see your point. I'll give that some thinking ;) What we do now is pull the top users now and the top users from when you guys graduated (Sep 10th). So it's not necessarily only the users in the top two pages.

@Mast I don't think it includes compound words. I.e. Brain----.

@EBrown fav'd, will review tonight if still unanswered by then

Zak
@JNat Interesting. I didn't know you also took the list as of graduation date.

Done!

3:24 PM
@Mat'sMug I've pointed people in the Design team to the comments on the post, so they can provide some insight on that (given I'm not able to :P )
@Quill I haven't been handling that swag, so I'm not the right person to ask about that
:\

Zak
@JNat Just a thought, does it matter if people don't claim their swag? Doesn't it just mean more leftover swag for events and such?

pretty awesome news @JNat, and special thanks for trying to accommodate

@JNat Quick question about the duck: is it actually rubber?

Did I do the follow-up correctly?

I know priorities are a uh, sore area at the moment and everything. thanks for answering @JNat

Zak
3:25 PM
@Gustavo6046 Looks fine

the real question
20 mins ago, by skiwi
@StackExchange Damn it, it was a just a sticker?! I thought that Tesla was the swag!

lol

@EBrown Leave a comment asking that on the post — the design team should be able to answer that. I haven't laid eyes on the swag yet :P
@Zak It doesn't matter, no. It just means more leftover, yes.

are there actual physical mockups or are the design team just really good with photoshop?

3:26 PM
@JNat Done, and thank you. :)
@Quill Design Team + Photoshop = Magic?

@Quill Nothing has been printed yet, as far as I know :)

@Quill I wouldn't say that the tesla sticker is being "good with photoshop" - with no offense to the design teams

Speaking of leftovers, I'm assuming it accumulates kind of like the recent MSE post
@DanPantry I meant the duck...

Though the logo transform on the duck is pretty impressive.

Just today I earned +22 rep due to that question! Now my rep in Code review is comparable to my rep in Stack Overflow! Lol

Zak
3:28 PM
@JNat Awesome, what kind of events does swag get given out for? (And how soon can we expect one ^^ )

but how did I earn +15 with just a upvote?

um @Zak that question is pretty much random
Milestones mainly

@Gustavo6046 View your rep history.

1 message moved to Trash

and rarely(ish)

3:28 PM
@Phrancis lol

@Zak Basically whatever we can come up with, as far as contest or the like go. Then there are rep milestones, and moderator election winning.

grep StackOverflow >> /dev/trash

We should have a contest for "Most Improved Code".

Lol I did it! Now I have 40 rep!
I almost can comment everywhere!
(joke)

Or pretty much whenever Joel feels like saying "Let them eat cake"

3:29 PM
Brb

@Quill Beware. The cake is a lie.

I hadn't played Portal until late 2012, so I didn't really understand that reference for a while.

@janos If they are not on the first two pages on the users reputation list, then are they really that much of a regular?

@CaptainObvious is this guy turning into another JavaDeveloper

3:31 PM
@DanPantry s/trash/null/, please

@SimonForsbergMcFeely I would say yes

@Quill been for a while lol

@Vogel612 Nah, @phrancis moved it to trash

Zak
@SimonForsbergMcFeely Depends how long they've been around for

and which tags they've been reviewing, too

3:32 PM
wtf
why do I have Trash on my favourite chat rooms
lol

There is that aspect as well. Perhaps a better graphing of "regular" would be recent activity, rather than just all rep.

Phisolophical question: are 53 lines enough in C++? Is their code big or small?

@Gustavo6046 Enough for what? I've written C++ programmes that did a whole lot in 53 LoC or less, and I've also written C++ programmes that didn't do squat in 1,000 lines.

@Gustavo6046 "it depends"

Generating HTML tags, like I done :3
And the 2nd question? How much value is 53 lines?

3:34 PM
urk windows... y u drop 10GB of trash onto my primary hard drive that's only got 64GB?

@Gustavo6046 depends...
mostly on what it does

Red circles being not regulars

@Quill incorrect

Zak
@Quill Not regulars Not regulars in chat

3:35 PM
The same as in teh question I posted

I would consider a regular: One who is active in the community; answers, questions, meta, commenting, review queues

@Quill I've seen Yuushi not too long ago and I've seen multiple answers from Emily.

amon, david, corbin, yuushi, ...

@EBrown The swag is awarded to the users who helped the site grow the most 'till it reached graduation — rep seems like a good and fair measurement of that, doesn't it?

@Vogel612 hard drive or ssd?

3:35 PM
@Gustavo6046 there are some recommendations on your previous posts that you haven't used in your follow-up. That's not so great

Simply earning rep doesn't classify you a regular

@DanPantry ssd of course, just to make matters worse
@Quill meta participation doesn't either

@Quill Don't fight the system, ain't going to work.

@JNat Ah, in that case I can see the reasoning. I just wonder if there shouldn't be a heuristic scale based on frequency of activity.

I don't know how to review code

3:35 PM
I don't think participating in the 2nd monitor makes you a 'regular' of CR.
2
It just makes you a regular of the 2nd monitor

it's an interesting idea to include meta-participation

I mean, some of these users might have been extremely active for the first year, and then not at all afterwards.

@Mast I'm not fighting any system; I'm trying to define regular

@SimonForsbergMcFeely skiwi didn't make the cut, and he's very much a regular

Rep is the best metric we have for determining whether someone is a regular, even with its flaws, it's the approach with the fewest flaws right now.

3:36 PM
And since it took us 3 years to graduate, that is a significant barrier.

@Quill I ain't a regular then. no review queues and significantly less activity since spring

The announcement doesn't say "regulars"
it says Higher Rep users

Zak
@Quill Sure, but can you think of a better, *quantifiable* metric to replace it with?

@Quill This ;)

@Zak I'm not trying to replace the metric

3:37 PM
And bear in mind that both @Zak adn I are missing out and we're both saying that rep is the better metric here.

@Zak what about "participation"?

I'm saying that being a regular and earning rep are apples and oranges

Moderators cares with who's regular to rate them and nothing else

Zak
@Vogel612 But how would you quantify it?

@Quill meh. s/earning/having/

3:37 PM
Anyway, just my $0.02. Feel free to take it or leave it.

(btw, what are we actually discussing here? ^^")

But thanks for the information @JNat! We all greatly appreciate it.

Yes, above all, Thanks @JNat

@DanPantry a better metric for swag

@Vogel612 Alright. In which case I think we have to be careful on a replacement metric. Rep is probably the best one.
Sucks for those of us who don't review much, but ultimately Code Review (and Q/A sites in general) are about answering or asking questions, not about how much chatter you generate.

3:39 PM
> Moderators cares with who's regular to rate them and nothing else

Monking!

Monking

@Alenanno No, it was standing before, now it's running at full speed :)

@orlp lol I guess

oops, edited, I should post it :P
not edit

3:41 PM
dang why does this have to happen whenever I turn around to actually get some work done. please flag actually and objectively offensive and flag-worthy content only. flags are not toys. thank you.
4

aka AccidentalEdit() was called when Post() should be

@Mat'sMug Work? You must be lost
I swear, every few weeks there is a moderator notice saying "can we not do this please"
can we seriously stop the behaviour leading up to these please

I am confused

The star wall should be cool and interesting things, not moderators reiterating rules relating to flags
6
</rant>

3:43 PM
Don't flag unless it's 100% not a gray area.

Then put in the star wars my new code, if it's awesome, because I don't do awesome code :(

You can ask someone to clarify what they mean before flagging.

The starwall has no context.
3

@DanPantry Trash would've been appropriate IMO.

Also, bear in mind this Meta.SE question.

3:44 PM
@Mast Potentially.

Just because we are all a somewhat tight-knit group, doesn't mean any stranger is.
The thing we all keep forgetting is that we are not the only people in this room.

Well, this chat has derailed. I'm out for the day.
Time to get stuff done.

This thread is now officially about spiderman CR again?

Yep. Not quite sure what happened. Can we get back on topic please?

3:45 PM
what was the topic anyway?

Swag

The swag

oh yeah, T-SHIRTS!!
Is the t-shirt available in other colors? — Mat's Mug ♦ 2 mins ago

s/T-Shirts/FREE STUFF

some people didn't like the criteria for choosing recipients of swag :/

3:46 PM
@Mat'sMug It would be a disservice to us to have that t-shirt in any other colour than beta blue.

lol

my follow-up question is bad?

> Reviewer Red, C# Cyan, VBA violet

it ain't beta-blue though. It's a few shades lighter

it's what someone said

3:46 PM
@janos Regular in chat, yes. Regular on site? Last answer posted in June '15. Only one answer posted last year. Two questions posted the last 3 months.

@Gustavo6046 eh no why?? you misunderstood that...

@Gustavo6046 I said it could be better. It's fine. You'll get better at this over time. Nevermind

@Gustavo6046 Edits aren't meant to be taken offensively, don't worry.
If your question is bad, it'll be downvoted. Edits are meant to improve good questions to be even better.

BTW line count is an irrelevant metric
3

@Gustavo6046 when our users say things can be better, what they generally mean is that there's always room for improvement and personal development, no matter how many years you've been learning

3:47 PM
Wow it has 3 UPVOETS

@Mat'sMug Especially when its used as a metric for performance... never again..
And yes, some managers still do that

I have the feeling my list of joined rooms is too long...

@Mat'sMug I use LoC as a metric on how much work I've done.

Q: Is there an easier or better way to add values to a multidimensional array of unknown depth?

MikeyI have the following class: class MultiArray { private $array = array(); public function add() { $keys = func_get_args(); $value = array_pop($keys); $array =& $this->array; foreach ($keys as $key) { if (!isset($array[$key])) { ...

@DanPantry make them use removed LoC instead

3:48 PM
^^

it's a better metric, in a way

@Vogel612 Delete the whole project.

I just like the ability to tell my boss "I updated ___ LoC today."

correction: "make them use removed LoC while keeping or improving the features of the software instead"
@EBrown don't give them that bait. It's simply not a criterion for performance

3:50 PM
And using it as a metric for performance just legitimises its use in their eyes. @Vogel612

if you hunted down a critical but elusive bug you may well just change a single line in a whole day

I can break (and fix) the entire Rubberduck project with a single line of code.

Spent like two days last week chasing down a misplaced ! in a C# method that was causing a whole chain of events to not fire

About the choice of reputation for deciding who gets the swag: It's a bit interesting that this discussion appears now. The fact that reputation was the deciding factor for who gets the swag is no secret, and it hasn't been a secret at all during the past year. People who wanted swag has had plenty of time to work up their reputation.
3

^^

3:53 PM
@SimonForsbergMcFeely +1

@SimonForsbergMcFeely I mentioned to skiwi weeks ago he wasn't going to make the cut, but yeah, it's not a new thing
it was the same for most beta sites before us

I mean, it sucks that I'm not getting swag but I'm not gonna ask to move the goal posts. I had at least 7 months notice.

In my opinion, reputation is the best deciding factor. Even if someone has high reputation but is, by some definition, not considered a "regular", they have helped with the site in the past, and our history is important as well. And as such they still deserve a chance to get swag.

My opinion is that while I may consider myself very active on the 2nd monitor, the chat room is essentially meant to be a supplement to the main site and I don't really contribute to the main site by posting in 2nd monitor. Thus, I don't really deserve swag for my chatter in here.

what is swag?

3:55 PM
BEsides, look at it the other way around:
Imagine you have 10k rep but you're not a regular of 2nd monitor for whatever reason. would it be fair for you to not be able to receive swag?

@SimonForsbergMcFeely Yes, because at the end of the day, the biggest contribution you can make to the site is found at the Ask Question and Answer button. There's a reason Meta posts and Comments don't earn you reputation

Receiving swag for getting the site to where it is shouldn't be conditional on your activity in chat. Especially as this is a question/answer site.

@Gustavo6046 this stuff

@Quill Neither does chat messages or stars, thank goodness.

lol

3:57 PM
@Gustavo6046 branded merchandise

@SimonForsbergMcFeely Yeah! Imagine how much rep would've won from people starring 'lol'

@DanPantry There's a difference between using stars, and getting stars.

@CaptainObvious lol @ that title

:26639491 More like @Phrancis, I reckon he's the one with the most frequent highstarred posts

3:58 PM
@Phrancis good/bad cop
@EBrown yep, misinterpreted, mb

@Mat'sMug I bet you think you're all a regular riot, starring this post

And it's not only about reputation, there's also the question about what you rather would put on your CV: "I have 10k reputation on Code Review" or "I have 50k messages in The 2nd Monitor, of which 4k has been starred".

@CaptainObvious I like how the UML was included in comments.

@SimonForsbergMcFeely And most of them sent within 9-5 hours? :p

@SimonForsbergMcFeely Can't I put both?

3:59 PM
Honestly if my employer knew how much I spent in this chat room I'd probably be fired.

What should I name my code? libhtml? — Gustavo6046 43 secs ago

@DanPantry Oh yes, that too. That you definitely don't want to put on your CV.

I left my station this afternoon with this room open...

Then again, I get a lot of value out of this chat room, being surrounded by intelligent people who teach me about programming. So I think it ends up being worth it, overall, when you do a cost/benefit analysis.
Intelligent people who teach me about programming, and who star 'lol'.
