The stupid thing would read the line breaks into the buffer when I pressed Enter to submit input to the program

well it makes sense
you can just remove the linebreak afterwards, no?
or when storing the input data, remove the linebreaks already

Well kinda, except that way of reading returns a byte[] so the line break was at its own index, and just more trouble than it's worth (or rather, not the right tool for the job, apparently)
private void acquireSelection() {
    char selection;
    Scanner charReader = new Scanner(System.in);
    try {
        selection = charReader.next().charAt(0);
        //selection = (char) System.in.read();
        routeSelectionToHelpItem(selection);
    }
    catch (IllegalArgumentException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }
}
That's good enough for me

12:16 AM
@Phrancis You should use try-with-resources with that Scanner.

Oh right, good idea. I keep forgetting that exists

@Phrancis How could you forget the best addition from Java 7?

I haven't written a whole lot of Java, that's all ;p

Awesome, now I don't need to wear that silly hat.
Anyone want to help me with Markdown Markup?

sure

(FYI: it's a project, not actual Markdown.)

oh
what specifically do you need help with?

12:33 AM
Just in general. It's a WPF application I'm working on to convert Markdown to HTML or BBCode.

I think a few users have written MD parsers before

Well eventually I want this to become more than just a parser.
I use this library for the actual Markdown transformation.

oh, I see. writing a desktop application then?

Yeah.
The idea being I can write my blog posts in Markdown, then format them to HTML to save me having to use the piss-poor WYSIWYG editor my blog software comes with.

@EBrown That sounds cool.
What blog server do you have?

12:42 AM
I'll get it on GitHub just in case anyone wants to use it.

Also, did you all hear that Windows Live Writer is open source?

No, what is Windows Live Writer?

Part of the Windows Live suite (it had a photo/video viewer).
(Make sure to replace "Professor Careless" with the actual professor's name when copying and pasting this text.) — Dan Romik 9 hours ago
Windows Live Writer, developed by Microsoft, is a desktop blog-publishing application that is part of the Windows Live range of products. It features WYSIWYG authoring, photo-publishing and map-publishing functionality, and is currently compatible with Windows Live Spaces, SharePoint blogs, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress, Telligent Community, PBlogs.gr, JournalHome, the MetaWeblog API, the Movable Type API, Blogengine, Squarespace, and all blogs that support Really Simple Discovery. Windows Live Writer introduces the Provider Customization API that enables both rich customization of Windows...

is there a way to access a private field in a different class within the same namespace?

Does protected work?

@Quill No.

okay thanks

Protected, I think yes.
Or Internal.
I don't exactly know what Protected is, but Internal is accessible within the same assembly.

internal works

1:18 AM
Protected is within the same class/struct, or in a derived class.

@Hosch250 Yes.

@EBrown Yeah, I just looked it up on MSDN.
That looks kind of like a detailed hat guess.

I'll get Markdown Markup (project) on GitHub and share with everyone here when it's up.

cool :-)

Any opinions on .Net logging frameworks?

1:28 AM
My second class is up...

@RubberDuck What's that one everyone always uses? NLog, maybe?

I've heard of it, but never used it.

Most people seem to have success with it. (I never use Logging frameworks, so that's the best I can do.)

1:44 AM
I think this post doesn't need DVs anymore.

it's just bad

What is, the post or the code?

the code
it's unclear what the code is supposed to be achieving

The OP is asking how to better work with the arguments.

@JeroenVannevel Well I had to query a bunch of dynamic tables.

You may have more luck posting this at codereview.stackexchange.com, since you're not asking to solve a problem. — ArcaneCraeda 40 secs ago
@ArcaneCraeda yes you are right i am not asking to solve the problem, i will try to post code review forum. But, my request is to know, is their a better approach then using the closures and also want to know some debugging techniques like, how to verify how many instances of particular objects are their at runtime. — user3278897 37 secs ago
No problem in asking that, it's just that CodeReview is there for that specific reason. You might get answers here, but you will have more luck and better ones over there! — ArcaneCraeda 27 secs ago

STAHP

This would not be good for Code Review as it is not real, implemented code, but rather is hypothetical. This would get closed on CR for that reason. — Phrancis 28 secs ago

What the heck is a singleton anyways

@Phrancis It's a class whose only purpose is to carry values to other classes.

2:18 AM
@Phrancis It is sort of like a static class, in that there is only one instance.

In software engineering, the singleton pattern is a design pattern that restricts the instantiation of a class to one object. This is useful when exactly one object is needed to coordinate actions across the system. The concept is sometimes generalized to systems that operate more efficiently when only one object exists, or that restrict the instantiation to a certain number of objects. The term comes from the mathematical concept of a singleton. There are some who are critical of the singleton pattern and consider it to be an anti-pattern in that it is frequently used in scenarios where it is...

It is often used for settings.

Ah ok gotcha

It's used a lot in for some reason.
TTGTB

@EBrown mostly in JAVA

2:21 AM

We have a couple in RD, particularly the parser.

it's different
the object itself isn't a Singleton

No.

@Quill lol

Oh. A 'real' singleton can only ever have one instance?

2:21 AM
yup

So, are real singletons just static classes?

Kinda sounds like it

not exactly, but functionally, it's pretty much equivalent
a static class is just a type
a singleton is an actual object

OK.

Oh. Singletons. Fun.
Waits for someone to take the bait

Q: A pirate in walks into a har

DavidA pirate walks into a bar... You must hurry to find Professor Boolean's secret lab. You fear it may be too late. Rumor has it that one of the pirates in this tavern knows where it is. There's a whole row of them seated at the bar. You start by talking to the pirate seated on the left-most bars...

@CaptainObvious Got excited for a minute there

@Quill sounds like wrong tool for the job. are you trying to make something internal to a namespace?

yes

@Quill It was okay. I didn't do much,though. I'm still working on a curl program leftover from a previous semester.
@Mat'sMug hi

move that namespace into its own assembly then; you'll be able to fully control what API you expose to client code.

DavidI have a Flask app that uses SQLAlchemy for data access. @Quill that's a mutable struct
Do you wish to see the world burn?

huh?

And where is your Equals/IEquatable implementation?

4:48 AM
Why would I need an interface? I'm trying to learn these things, so please bare with my absolute noobity

Do you wish Kha'zu'l unleashes his flames on our planet?
so irresponsible
The default .Equals() implementation of a struct uses reflection to compare fields
Which is relatively speaking very expensive
overriding it properly helps a lot

@Quill rule #1: a struct that's safe to use is an immutable struct. Value types represent values, not objects - they have different semantics than classes. You want them immutable, trust Jeroen on that one

if you also implement IEquatable<T>, you will create another .Equals() overload that also prevents boxing because its parameter is T already

This is some real code that I sketched out. If I had used different wording it'd be on-topic, no? — David 34 secs ago
are you kidding me
so the object is the issue. Right, so I can't have a dictionary store parameters because there's different types

nono
I'm talking about ListingToHitStruct.Equals(object)
also: what's up with that name

4:53 AM
So, you want this peer reviewed as a hello world that prints strings, or as a program that actually performs data access? where's the data access code? Please edit the real code in, we'll happily reopen. — Mat's Mug ♦ 55 secs ago

thanks
@JeroenVannevel I don't know where I was going with the name

hammered

right, so I should be using classes instead of structs?

likely, but not necessarily for the beforementioned reasons
X AVOID defining a struct unless the type has all of the following characteristics:
It logically represents a single value, similar to primitive types (int, double, etc.).
It has an instance size under 16 bytes.
It is immutable.
It will not have to be boxed frequently.
You are currently violating.. all 4
I see multiple values represented, you're very close to 16 bytes with just your object pointers (12 byte) assuming 4-byte pointers (32-bit) or above it assuming 8-byte (64-bit), it's definitely mutable and you haven't implemented IEquatable meaning every comparison will make it boxed
actually, you're probably above the 16 byte treshold because of the dictionary entries
and that's without calculating the dictionary object itself

I see. So in the code block above, Parameter would be an acceptable struct?

5:01 AM
@Edward Accuracy has improved, enough where I have been recognized at least a few times

@JeroenVannevel So, would this be an OK struct?

only if you make it immutable and implement IEquatable and override Equals

struct Rectangle : IEquatable
{
    int width;
    int height;
    public override Equals();
}
Pretend whatever IEquatable members are implemented.

@Quill Oh cheez really? Thanks for letting me know

@Hosch250 yes, because int is immutable in itself

5:04 AM
Yeah, I've seen more than a few on SO get rejected lately

Take for example this:
void Main()
{
	var obj1 = new X();
	Console.WriteLine(obj1.GetHashCode());
	obj1.x = 5;
	Console.WriteLine(obj1.GetHashCode());
	obj1.x = 10;
	Console.WriteLine(obj1.GetHashCode());
}

struct X
{
	public int x;
}
What output do you expect?

@Quill is there a meta about this?

0, 5, 10.

I'm printing hashcodes, not x

not on CR... yet. I was expecting one soon
but SO and MSE yeah, there should be

5:05 AM
Oh. I'd expect the same hashcode.

oh wait, that's probably a bad display

But, it shouldn't have the same hashcode, correct?

The HashCode is calculated based on the object's fields

Oh, so it will have a different hashcode.

SE's kinda on edge with this licensing discussion, plagiarism concerns are a hot topic of sorts

> One or more fields of the derived type is used to calculate the return value. If you call the derived type's GetHashCodemethod, the return value is not likely to be suitable for use as a key in a hash table. Additionally, if the value of one or more of those fields changes, the return value might become unsuitable for use as a key in a hash table.

@Phrancis I would like C# a lot more if Visual Studio was slightly less bloated.
I actually do like working in C#, although the whole idea of everything-is-a-class irks me after having free-floating functions in JavaScript
And namespaces feel like a giant hack instead of requireing a file
If C# had node's module system it would be bliss.
In fact, more languages need npm, because it is just too cool.

Also, I'm learning how html5 dialogs work. They are weird.

html5 dialogs?

And also annoying, becauset hey don't automatically 'disappear' once you click outside the dialog bounds.
Yeah, they're basically html5 modals
... wtf onebox?
that's only going to work in Chrome or Opera.
Firefox + IE/Edge don't support them (yet)

I had to use something like that recently for a project, I used a plugin called Vex
It's about time I learnt node

Yeah, but obviously these are nartive, which is pretty cool.
And they give you the pseudoelement ::backdrop which you can style.

8:23 AM
oh? nice
using div backdrops for dialogs was always a pain in the ass

Unfortunately for the usecase I'm thinking of it is a necessity
there's no real way for you to detect a click outside a dialog without a 'backdrop' div
(Because ::backdrop is a CSS pseudo-element it cannot be targetted with javascript)

kind of like ::after

Yep, same breed of thing.

and there's messy workarounds with .innerHTML IIRC

Yeah, I'd rather not. in components it would just mean you have one element for the dialog and then an enclosing element to capture clicks.
Which isn't so bad and kinda makes sense, TBH

8:26 AM
Yeah, having an external backdrop div is fine
it was just styling it before it was actually a thing was the problem

<dialog-click-interceptor><dialog></dialog></dialog-click-interceptor> is perfectly fine for me
Given that the width of the <dialog> element is the width of the screen... usually...

So many Macs...

and apparently they're doing it next year this year

I'd like to go, but between having to move, get a passport and a laptop and potentially going to gamescon, idk.
(I don't have a laptop, so I'd have to buy one).

fair enough
how's the move going?

I haven't even found a place yet. I don't have to move until April 24th latest, so I'm fine. I'm aiming to move between March 24 and April 24.
Hopefully looking for a 2 bedroom flat in the bay. I can turn one of my bedrooms into a studio, then - for programming and audio recording - by putting audio damp material on the wall and getting a whiteboard and that sort of thing.

Oh you've got quite a bit of time then

With a nice view of the ocean..

Do you webcam/camera over your videos?

@Quill When I stream, yes. But I don't tend to do it for Youtube videos.

fair enough
my internet has been so horrible lately, instant 500 ping when joining a comp lobby
It's very saddening to not be able to play games

:(
Wow, today I learned you can reveal passwords in javascript just byc hanging an <input type='password'> to <input type='text'> using js. input.type = 'text'. It preserves the text too.

can you run it through a 3rd party script though, or just on console

You can run that via script tag
Obviously, if you have https and a csp to only allow scripts from certain domains, then you don't have to worry about 3rd party scripts doing nasty things, but still, pretty interesting

This looks more like a code review than a problem. Since the code has multiple issues, please describe what you want to achieve — Pynchia just now

I'm very confused.
Reading through a SPROC now. Has lots of parameters, all of them are NULLable
But right after the parameter declaration of them being nullable, there's validation to make sure they can't be NULL.
wtf?

Zak
Good Monking everyone
