Q: Creating a pseudo Pivot Table / Database using a 4-D array

ZakWhy am I not just using a Pivot Table / Database? a) I've never ever used either before. And I don't have time to learn how before this project needs to actually be finished. b) The final output is going to be a report for the Company Directors. As such, the flexibility of choosing which bit...

Generic code review remark: Keeping your identifiers in English is making things easier if there is any chance of your code being seen by other people (either because your company is hiring abroad, your project might be open source some day, or you intend to post questions on SO). Didn't really matter in this case, but I know I get tired of second-guessing the meaning of localized identifiers really quick. ;-) — DevSolar 16 secs ago

hard to believe that someone doesnt find CR welcoming

User posts off-topic question receiving downvotes, even with answers, and rants on Meta about said closure and downvotes. This can happen on pretty much any site.
@bazola I don't find that hard. We're probably not as nice as some months ago. On the other hand, some people got bored of always posting the same comments and there are always more and more questions to handle. It's not that surprising.
17:06
i just find it funny that he says we are not welcoming, and then insults jamal in the comments of his meta question
We can only be super nice regarding new questions for so long. Eventually, popularity will increase and we will have to find a balance between courtesy and quality control. As long as we're not wronging any users, then there shouldn't be a problem. Maintaining quality control will almost always cause frustration like this.
If Jamal wasn't there, the quality of CR wouldn't be so high. That said, it does not always prevent him from making errors. But that's ok, he probably salvaged so many questions...
The OP also gave no examples and suggested that one shouldn't edit questions if they lack the domain knowledge. That's not how it works here.
Git might not be able to manually merge the changes for you, and you both might have to spend time together understanding how to incorporate both of your changes. That said, there should probably be some process in place to prevent this situation where one person is refactoring code that is being actively developed by another person; it does not sound like it is making efficient use of your team. This would more effectively be done during a code review phase. — mmccaff 46 secs ago
@Jamal That's how it should work ideally, but we don't have domain experts for everything.
17:16
Yes, for answering, but editing is entirely separate.
@StackExchange left some comments there, but I'd encourage the community to at least listen to the complaint. I'm not saying he's right, but we should listen.
Hence the ideally.
If the complaint is about his question, then he can talk about that. Bringing up the site in general and finding things to pick at won't help. The only example link was for this very question.
Agreed, but we don't often hear from the silent majority, we should at least hear what they have to say. I admit that I'm surprised about the "poor experience" though.
Never thought of us as an unfriendly bunch.
Any amount of downvoting can lead to this. We'd have to stop all downvoting to avoid that, and even then, it would frustrate regulars.

"I'm posting this in good faith that my code actually works"
And if I recall, Regex questions usually have to accompany a language tag. I don't remember if it's been documented on Meta, though.
@Jamal Yes, we consider regex on it's own too stubby to have it's own language.
So it's always a regex solution 'framed' in another language.
Zak
Zak
is almost begging for VTCs
@Zak And that's a red flag. Sure, you may not catch all the edge cases, but you should at least test for general completeness.
@Heslacher Haha, no, but wouldn't it be fantastic if it that was the issue?

When I connect locally, I use the server computer's IP directly, (IPv4 and IPv6 both work).

When I try to connect online I use my public IP (Which to my understanding connects to my router, which is set up to port forward it to my server computer).

@skiwi I feel like it's a lang tool or platform, because a lot of the specifics differ depending on the language.
Though you can study Regex on its own. It's awkward to post a CR queestion about Regex without the language its written in.
regex is to a programming language like a vector
it can be done in many languages and it's usage looks like each other
but it's not a language on it's own
IMHO
Since we don't do in bugs anyway, questions should never be tagged with just regex
@skiwi ^^
What do you consider it?
17:46
I don't consider a regular expression a programming language in the same way I don't consider JSON or unix globs programming languages
I completely agree with the JSON comparison
what do you considere unix globs?
Bash is considered a language
unix globs on their own are essentially the same as regular expressions
they are text that denote patterns but they don't do anything on their own

@DanPantry That ^^

He says 1.3% of all posts are voted negative...I'm curious on that.
18:22
in one of his comments he seems to say that he asked the CR question just to prove some point
@EBrown Do you feel a need to?
@Mast I'm about to.
@bazola Which is a very bad idea.
I am not going to delete any comments while a heated discussion is going on. The most I'll do is redact profanity.
After reading this thread I am wondering whether OP is able to formulate a point without insulting the person he is making it at or at least insinuating something derogatory about their intelligence.
if this is "not the first time" he has had an argument like this, and then after throwing all of the shade he has at everyone tries to 'side with the voice of reason' even though he is the one doing the name-calling, I question his value as a member on this stackexchange
CR is absolutely the most welcoming online community I have ever been a part of - and that includes EVE. If someone doesn't fit, I would say they are probably the issue
@DanPantry Which is why I wanted to request a ban for said user. He's not bringing any value and trying to decrease the value of valuable users.
His meta question does not seem to be wanting to discuss a valid point that is appropriate to the exchange as a whole but comes across as a rant from someone who feels their question was closed unjustly.
Zak
Zak
I'm trying to write a response, but I'm getting too emotionally involved to say anything constructive right now
Indeed, this is backed up by the fact he mentions that his question was "not a real question" but was formulated to "prove his point" (whatever that may be) about "this sitd and a few others"
Well, again, read the title of the question. Don't understand? - look up the reference, which happens to be a CS textbook. But this my question, in general, has very little to do with my question on the CR site. That other question was specifically crafted to prove my point after repeatedly encountering the unproductive behavior, typical for this SE site and very few others from the same family. — wvxvw 15 mins ago
18:25
Is there a close reason for "pointless question"?
I don't think this question is pointless
It seems like that meta post is discussable, but not in its current form
That, I agree with
@DanPantry I may not be able to word it correctly, but I mean that the current post is going nowhere if the OP is jumping right on everyone's throat
Not seeking feedback on any and all aspects of the code?
18:26
The question is not phrased as a "are you guys too strict with your guidelines" - which is what I think the underlying issue here
But it feels like a rant to me
Zak
Zak
this may be wrong
And @Zak, I applaud you on having the maturity to not comment on a discussion that you feel you are too emotionally involved in. Not many could do that (including myself)

but the way it feels so far is "I deliberately wrote a question in a superior, difficult to understand part of the programming spectrum, conforming to my own ideals of what and how programmers should talk and communicate, in a way that I felt was likely to result in the uninformed masses downvoting and closing it. so that I could point out their lack of sophistication

I hardly consider talking in a public chat room that anyone can join 'talking behind his back'
Rather, I would figure inviting him to join chat to a room full of people who he has just slung mud at on meta might not be the wisest course of action.
Especially as @Mat'sMug said, he would need to calm down first.
