Gosh that scared me.

You have a much better AI than your buddy Captain, @Duga
G'night, Simon!

@SirPython Yeah... as if that is a big achievement..
2

@SimonAndréForsberg You should have had @Duga say this.

@Hosch250 I am a bot..

There is still something I don't get: How is CaptainObvious technically not a user? As in, he posts messages to this room all the time, but you can never set him a IM with "@" nor can you visit his profile.

12:06 AM
I do not need sleep

Now where is Duga's power chord.....

@SirPython Click on his chat profile and look in the URL at its user ID
(Captain's that is)

How did they manage to do that?

It's just the system they use for feeds, probably so feeds stats don't get factored in with real users' stats
Duga, on the other hand, she's a real user that Simon created.

She?
Whoops.

12:11 AM
Yes, she. Well, "it" but she is cooler.

Apparently she is a female bot.
Jan 2 at 19:27, by Simon André Forsberg
@Duga is indeed a she. It is a female bot.

How come she says "Reload" before she starts bombarding us with feed info?

Because she doesn't always have feed info to bombard us with.
So we still need to know our votes/stars are reset.

Alright, I gotta go or else I'm not going to finish this essay before midnight.
Happy coding!

You too.
I should be doing school myself :(

How is that for a marketing ad?

Are you going to flag it?

well I guess it's an advice rather than a wrong piece of information but it's quite strange

the information here in the App.Config are carried out with attributes all the way
Just wanted to make sure I understood it right :)

@Hosch250 no

OK.

@Hosch250 Circular lists can be implemented using arrays too.

@200_success Thanks for the info. It didn't have a wiki, so I just copied from SO.
I've been hearing about them, so I'll look into them after school.
Update the wiki when I know more (unless it is already done).

1:37 AM
The wiki summary for seems a bit long as well.

OK, just copy/paste.
And I update links, fix typos, and correct formatting.

@Hosch250 what was the azure tag you edited?

That was an existing tag.

Was it just ? It doesn't look like what I just reviewed.

@RubberDuck What about it?
I did both parts of it.

1:40 AM
Never mind. Edit still pending.
That makes sense.

Could someone check the ?
I don't think those three questions need it.
So, should they be removed and have the system remove it, or should I add a wiki?

You're right @Hosch250 those questions have nothing to do with . They just have some UML in the question.

@Jamal Just remove the tag from the question, and the system will handle the rest. I don't care if you accept/reject the wiki suggestion.

@Hosch250 you're #98 here

If you want to have a class to Serialize my obj into Xml what would you call it?
hypothetically !

@Mat'sMug What does that tell me?

2:21 AM
Is something like SerializationEngin a good name to go with :)

you shouldn't have anything like that... there's already an XmlSerializer in the framework
@Hosch250 it says you have 6 qualifying tags

I KNOW... that's exactly what I called it to start with and then BAM

OK.
So I need 14 more?

yup
@Mehrad but you don't need such a class...

So, you'de say SerializationEngin is no good as well?

2:23 AM
any class is Xml-serializable

Oh... how come? I just wanted to write a little helper
emmm

.net already has one... are you reinventing the wheel?

Nope... No reinventing ...
So in the class you suggest to go ahead and use var bla = new XmlSerializer

yup. well if you call your serializer instance bla and post that up for review I'll chew you up ;)

I guess that's a good idea.
I haven't gone into details for it yet but I thought I kinda trap all the bells and whistles in the helper class. But if it's going to be simple I will roll the wheel and enjoy
haaaaaaaaahahaha... wouldn't do that for sure
at least FooBla
Thanks Mat. much appreciated as always

2:27 AM
np
the class you want to xml-serialize has to have public members (properties) - it's the public stuff that gets serialized. you can use [XmlIgnore] attributes for stuff you don't want serialized.
and it'll need public setters if you need it de-serializable
the rest is automagic
right @RubberDuck?

So you mean the obj I am attempting to serialize is already IS ?
Now I know what you meant by you previous comment

what does it look like?

So how would I grab it's serialized edition and save it as a file?
I had no idea there is such a thing happening in the background

you give the XmlSerializer.Serialize method a stream, or a TextWriter, or an XmlWriter, along with the object you want to serialize - the serializer writes it to the stream you give it

This is exactly what I was trying to do. So I learned from this, that we don't actually serialize using XmlSerializer() but we just let .Net know that we want it

2:34 AM
the XmlSerializer does the serialization/deserialization job for you
of course there are ways to complicate everything and take full control over the serialization process, too

agreed and understood

^^ that question is a mess
damn. nevermind.
it's a new T[], no need for the type constraint
still the question is a mess

What is so messy about it @Mat'sMug
Your logo is adorable @Shortstuff81000

it was first closed as off-topic /broken code, then edited + reopened, and now there's a comment thread that I'm going to flag as obsolete ;)
> I think these comments should all be removed, except perhaps @200_success' comment about the unit tests - the rest are obsolete or contribute to the ambiguous-ness of the on-topic-ness of the post...
actually, the mess is because originally OP stated it wasn't working as intended, and the edit that ended up reopning it changed nothing of the code. I reviewed it assuming it works as intended.

Does it work?

haven't copied it to my IDE. It looks like it might work. If OP says he's got working tests and that the code works as intended, ...we aren't asking more of anyone else, why would we pick on this one?
Welcome to The 2nd Monitor @Shortstuff81000! I believe you'll need 20 points on Code Review to chat here - have you created your CR account yet? You know you wanna! :)
besides, if OP hadn't mentioned issues in the original-original post, would anyone have cast a close vote?

nope
it's a parser generator
and they seem to charge for docs

yeah you can use it for making your own domain specific languages
i never dug deep into it though
i went with something else.

I'm using it to parse some VBA

is that something else easier to work with?

doy, it was actually "goldparser"

http://goldparser.org/

because the SO mug is white with black print ;)

heres a comparison against the alternatives:

http://goldparser.org/about/comparison-parsers.htm

looking at that
I'm not sure BNF can fit the bill for VBA though

i admit i have not done much VBA
for the last year-ish all i have really been doing is WPF MVVM with entity framework.

is there a grammar library of some sort for GoldParser?
or I'd have to come up with my own grammar file for VBA?

there is a huge selection of grammars for pretty much every language...somewhere on their site
here:

4:18 AM
found it
has vbscript, but no vba/vb6.
I'd have to take a closer look

what is it for? something fun or work related?

ah unit tests. I have recently fallen in love with ncrunch for vs2013, parallel constant test running is so cool.

and code inspections! for VBA!

love the github page, there are so many terrible ones out there that are badly documented.

4:27 AM
thanks! @RubberDuck is contributing (more than I am these days!)

Pity i will never use it. I wouldn't use visual basic if you tripled my salary :D

never say never!

Tripling my salary wouldn't make me use it either.
For the simple fact that my int salary == null;

having to work with Excel on a weekly basis probably would though
@Hosch250 ah! good one!

granted tripling my salary will still only bring me to a normal salary :) , i am super under paid, but my new job is as a sole developer, working from home who makes his own hours and has complete creative control on the project with access to any software i want to get.

pft, well i'll just be over here building a business rule library for c#!

vbscript grammar ain't going to cut it. I'll stick to ANTLR for now...
I mean, the ANTLR grammar I have for VB6 is much closer to actual VBA grammar than this GoldParser grammar for VBScript. Note taken though, keeping a mental note that there are alternatives out there ;)

If all my tag wiki edits get approved, I'll be halfway to Research Assistant.

That too.
I see it is a good thing the edits are still being reviewed.
The .NET tag at SO is wrong, according to your comments.
I'm done for the night here.

4:58 AM
not mine. I just said "removed valuable information" ;)

The other person made a couple comments.
Also, I can see why you rejected the one Multi-threading edit - I just did that to make all the "Multithreading"s into "Multi-threading" so it would be consistent.

where's AnimalImage defined/assigned?

AnimalImage is in another table called Animals. The inline SQL is joining the Animals and Genes tables with the Creatures Combos table in order to display images. The Creature Combos table is made up of foreign keys, so I had to type in animal and gene info only once. :-)

@Shortstuff81000 The code could certainly use a little vertical space, those are loooong lines

I think the issue is more with the query than with the bindings

5:33 AM
That could be. I tried adding a Where clause to the Select statement, but that didn't help anything.

SELECT *
FROM [CreatureCombos]
    INNER JOIN [Animals] AS Animal1 ON [CreatureCombos].[NewCreatureID] = Animal1.[AnimalId]
    INNER JOIN [Animals] AS Animal2 ON [CreatureCombos].[ComboAnimalID] = Animal2.[AnimalId]
    INNER JOIN [Genes] ON [CreatureCombos].[ComboGeneID] = [Genes].[GeneId];
that selects every field of every table
but it looks like you only need AnimalImage and GeneImg
I'd stick that query in SSMS and see what I get
and replace * with only the fields that are actually needed

Not exactly; there's also AnimalAltText, AnimalToolTip, GeneAltText, and GeneToolTip, which I will add as soon as I have this query figured out.
@Mat'sMug I will try that. Thanks. :-)

@Shortstuff81000 you have 2 joins on Animals, so with SELECT * you're getting every field from Animals twice - not sure how Bind("AnimalImage") determines which one to take

Looks like a self join but I don't quite get why you are doing that. Only time I do a self-join is for things like finding duplicate records...

5:44 AM
@Phrancis I'm not entirely sure how I should do this anymore. I tried selecting only the records I needed and got a "DataBinding: 'System.Data.DataRowView' does not contain a property with the name 'AnimalImage'." error. :-(

@Shortstuff81000 posted an answer ;)
basically, you're binding on an AnimalImage field, but your result set has two of such fields - it somehow goes through, just not with the results you'd expect
(I'm assuming the query does what it's supposed to be doing though)

@Mat'sMug Ooooh now I see what you mean! Let me try it out! :-)

@Shortstuff81000 when you get that code to work as intended, it would be awesome if you could post it on Code Review! (all of it, not just that SO-friendly snippet)

I definitely will! :-D

New convert.

5:51 AM
yay!
@Shortstuff81000 the SqlDataSource may be silently renaming the 2nd AnimalImage field to something like AnimalImage1 or AnimalImage_1 - I don't know enough about it to be sure, but I'm sure you get rid of that issue with explicit column selections - ping me if it works, I'm going offline :)
good night @all!
