@Mehrad I've been mucking with XML serialization a good bit lately. I'm no expert but I could probably help if you run across something confusing. I know it took me a long while to wrap my head around it. It's really simple though actually. You've just gotta figure out what attribute to mark your classes/properties with.

Greetings, Programs.

boolean[][] tempArray = new boolean[3][3]; does this declaration fill all 9 elements with some default value in java?

@overexchange I believe that by definition, Java values are initialized on creation.
This article says so anyway: pearsonitcertification.com/articles/…

12:24 PM
@DanishALI unfortunately, I don't know much C++. Hopefully someone else can help you out on that.
@overexchange default value will be false for all booleans.

ok
@Donald.McLean i think this is what you are referring to: Exactly what is in the array locations after construction depends on the type. Integer and floating-point primitive arrays have elements initialized to zero values. Arrays of boolean types have elements of false values. Arrays of object types have null references.

^^ correct

I just thought you might like a reference so that you knew I wasn't pulling the answer out of thin air.

so, array of enum type will have null values after construction?

yup. enum is an object.

12:29 PM
Wow...
But then again, what isn't in Java?

@nhgrif int, float, boolean... all other primitive types.

@nhgrif - about your comments to the meta answer.

@rolfl to be clear, I agree that the question should be closed.

Q: How to express `not 0 neither nil` in ruby

ironsandI want to check if foo is not 0 neither nil. What come to my mind are these two expression. foo != 0 && foo != nil !([0, nil].include?(foo)) First one is easier to read, but it's not DRY. Second one is DRY, but it looks bit complicated. Is there better way to write this expression?

@Mehrad Attributes in XML are superior for many uses, especially data exchange.

@SimonAndréForsberg You are not being watched. :-(

not the same for markup, but, if you have an XMLSchema or a DocTYpe, then validating the attributes is much better, etc.

cs.registerOutParameter(1, Types.OTHER);
cs.setLong(2, mainmission_sid);

the Types.OTHER is incorrect, that I know

^^ nice suggestion
hmm... menu.... bar-menu... can this be made a pun somehow?

A grid and a menu walked into a program http://codereview.stackexchange.com/q/78014?atw=1 #java

You might want to add why int array[] is not a good idea so it shows the hidden problem rather than a preference thing

@JeroenVannevel true, haven't been able to specify exactly why yet... but I guess it is because I prefer type[] variable.

what's the hidden problem, besides looking weird?
3

int array[], array;
The former will be an int[], the latter will be an int
specifying it as int[] will give two arrays instead
specifying the type in one place prevents this

3:27 PM
@JeroenVannevel wait, that's a legal line of code?

and how often do we declare two or more variables on the same line in Java?

@SimonAndréForsberg I don't think it's particularly uncommon to write private String firstname, lastname, cityOfBirth;

@JeroenVannevel - @SimonAndréForsberg 1 - 0

3:31 PM
@JeroenVannevel fun facts: the VBA equivalent makes firstname a String and everyone else an implicit Variant

@Mat'sMug Variant is some sort of Object?

sort of

it could be anything from an object reference to a value type. Nobody likes it ;)

Monking!

3:35 PM
Speaking of which -- I have a bunch of AngularJS tutorials to watch for my exam tomorrow

@JeroenVannevel exactly: use it everywhere and you have duck-typed VBA
I believe it's gone in

@Mat'sMug Ah, it's probably more closer to dynamic
Which is apparently the same as Object without option strict in VB.NET

sounds like it
"more closer" is pretty damn close
@JeroenVannevel == take type safety and throw it out the window

Yeah, although sometimes it's necessary
I've only seen it in COM-stuff so far

IMO it's the only place it belongs ;)

3:38 PM
it comes with a huge performance impact

guess the language:
@Sherlock: Yeah, or a sign of someone who made a mistake. When the design of the language is such that the obvious, intuitive way to do something opens a security hole, security holes are going to happen, even for experienced developers. Why do you think we're still getting patches for buffer overflow vulnerabilities every Patch Tuesday, a quarter-century after the Morris Worm put them on everyone's radar? Because some mistakes are literally hard not to make in certain languages. — Mason Wheeler 44 mins ago

They'll never get mature...
Aha, they named it 7 because long ago - in 2010 - they were internally working on a 6 branch and killed it, so because a few people did not want to get confused, everyone in the world has to get confused

Your logic is unpopular.

Stack Exchange Raises $40m

Today Stack Exchange is pleased to announce that we have raised $40 million, mostly from Andreessen Horowitz.

Everybody wants to know what we’re going to do with all that money. First of all, of course we’re going to gold-plate the Aeron chairs in the office. Then we’re going to upgrade the game room, and we’re already sending lox platters to our highest-rep users.

But I’ll get into that in a minute. First, let me catch everyone up on what’s happening at Stack Exchange. …

5:05 PM
@rolfl Where's Vista?

What?
> Heck, we don’t even allow animated ads, even though they are totally standard on every other site on the Internet, because it would be disrespectful to programmers to strain their delicate eyes with a dancing monkey, and we can’t serve them 100% if we are distracting them with a monkey.
2

@rolfl Official: SE team doesn't like monkeys!

@rolfl I knew you would react to that

> The math cities barely even have any programmers and they speak their own weird language.
> But sadly, we saw that was not universal. Programmers often have crappy jobs, and their bosses often poke them with sharp sticks. They are underpaid, and they aren’t learning things, and they are sometimes overqualified, and sometimes underqualified. So we decided we could actually make all the programmers happier if we could move them into better jobs.

> check out our hott new “about” page.

@CaptainObvious Is a language?
2

nope

Oh, Java, should've guessed
And it's another A vs. B question (sort of)

@RubberDuck Even if it is, it could still be removed. Tags aren't always needed to indicate what is being stored by a data structure.

Hmm, there's no main() method. Guessing it's not always needed to have that in a class huh.

5:30 PM
main is needed once in a specific kind of application: to start it
Android apps and other types of projects don't necessarily need it

@Jamal Fair enough. I'm good with that.

@JeroenVannevel s/don't necessarily need/should not have/

I really have no clue what that notation is

really? monkey and I are using it all the time!

oh dear.
2

5:33 PM
replace first with second, basically.

substitute!

It's a replace!

I typically just ignored those sentences

I wasn't entirely sure because android or other project structures might just use it behind the scenes
so I didn't want to use an absolute statement

5:36 PM
behind the scenes, perhaps. But a programmer of an Android application should not add one.

> What works for developers should work for a lot of other people, too, as long as they’re willing to think like developers, which is the best way to think.

@JeroenVannevel about half way down The Jargon File.
    charlie: I've seen that term used on alt.foobar often.
    lisa: Send it to Erik for the File.
    lisa: Oops...s/Erik/Eric/.
> The s/Erik/Eric/ says “change Erik to Eric in the preceding”. This syntax is borrowed from the Unix editing tools ed and sed, but is widely recognized by non-Unix hackers as well.

It appears the s/// operator was introduced in sed, and then perl (I think that order), but no other language I know of uses it.

monkeyspeak does

the operator is widely used in vi/vim though.
an operation like: :1,$s/^/ /
which would indent all lines with 4 spaces, good for code review.
2

5:55 PM
Probably a good thing, right? ^^^
Oh, but now it works.

@rolfl % means the entire document, short for 1,$

I know, but I use the pattern often, regularly substituting one of the limits with . , and it's a muscle-memory thing.

By the way, Vi/Vim needs more votes on sample questions

@rolfl Depending on the language. By convention, Scala uses 2 space indents.

Oh, right. Duh. An initial 4 space. Yeah, that.

@Donald, you going to throw your hat in on the scifi elections?

Not at all sure, you have some attributes that make you a good candidate.

One of these days @Ducky's gonna open his mouth and get in trouble.....
Staff meetings... ugh.

Meetings are where the minutes are kept, but the hours are lost.

Meh, no one even bothers to keep minutes. =;)-

Hi.
My Management professor is a model teacher, and my ITM professor is a dear.
Open book tests for both, my ITM teacher just uses questions from the textbook.
Management says we should be able to pass if we know the material, but he only has quarterly tests, so I haven't done one yet.

I think tests are dumb and don't accomplish much. I say this as someone who generally did so well on tests.
Except calculus... Didn't do well on those.

I usually do excellent too, unless I don't know the material.

Q: What is a better way to document a function line-by-line?

ToddI'm currently working on an enormous, enterprise level project. There are about 130 other devs on said project, and I aim to document my code in the clearest way, so others may easily see what I'm doing and why. I'm using JSDoc style comments to summarize my functions, but sometimes I feel the ne...

I am good at writing discussions, but they take a fair amount of time and research to do right.

@yadav_vi You have some follow-up questions about the Cash Register question? Would you care to join me in chat?

If you look at my transcript, you might assume I enjoyed calculus since I took it so many times.

I can only take a class twice without explicit permission.

@rolfl Any kind of file transfer, including handling of HTTP uploads, remote backups, etc.

But, with an A, who'd want to risk getting an A- or B from a different teacher?

@200_success Sure, I can see that being a landmark in the code.

What I HATE as an online student, though, is watching 50 minute lectures when I could read the transcript and have it for later review in 5-10 minutes.

Is that wholly different from just data-transfer

Subtly different, in that you think of a file as an entity with a path in a filesystem.

Hmm, okay

7:26 PM
@Hosch250 you will retain more information from the lecture than from reading it once and maybe skimming it afterwards

@Malachi No I won't.

that is why schooling has been done by a teacher for so many years when it could just as easily have been read in a book

I learn best by reading and reviewing.
I am not very audio-oriented.
I am a sight-learner.
I still ask the teachers questions, but I don't like lectures.

God I hate Access.

Stop using it, and stop the hate.

7:31 PM
I don't know Access.

That's a good thing.

Have a Word/PowerPoint/OneNote/Outlook question?
Sure, Publisher, too.
Excel, not really, Access, no.

I learn by doing.

@200_success I have. Mostly. All the good stuff happens on SQL Server now.

Why doesn't it say "closed"?

Q: Multiple if else: how to reduce Cyclomatic Complexity of code

vanI have the code from a method using Java 6, and the checkstyle complains about the Cyclomatic Complexity being too high (13 instead of the max 10), how can i reduce this? if (typeOfTable.equals("STRING1")) { for (String type1Table : tableType1List) { if (fileName.contains(t...

Or [on hold]?

what was wrong with the example code in this post? I only ask because I would do the same thing and would be surprised if I got downvoted for it.
It seems able to stand on its own (arguably it could have been wrapped in a function)
e.g. function someFunc(typeOfTable){ /*code */ }

@moarboilerplate This should help you out.

Q: Why is hypothetical example code off-topic for Code Review?

200_successAs stated in the Help Center, one of the criteria for a question to be on topic is: Is it actual code from a project rather than pseudo-code or example code? What is the rationale for that rule?

all I see is that variable names and string values have been changed
granted, it could be easier to follow if some of the variables were "initialized" by being passed in to a method

AngularJS enthusiasts around?

This animal sounds rather scary...

@RubberDuck so I created a pastebin showing an example of what I might post. pastebin.com/bqx8WzFn do you think this would get closed as well?

What about a Goliath Birdeater?
