Good morning @Simon

9:18 AM
I'm going to bed now.

@lol.upvote You must have cheated, the code challenge started just minutes before you had five passing tests!
@Jamal Night! Or... whatever to say...
Morning, @kleinfreund

Night (although technically morning now)!

@Jamal For once we agree about which time of day it is :)

@rolfl Congratulations on your 10k. Looking forward to 20k!

Yep, congratulations from me as well @rolfl :)

9:31 AM
Nice job, monkey!

Writing the concept for my website now. After I built it.

@StackExchange Wow. That's quite a query. Nothing like what they taught us in school about relational databases. =)

Q: Calculating Lost Reputation

rolflA discussion arose not long ago on the 2nd Monitor about how much reputation has been lost due to the reputation caps. Okay, I'm going to bed for real (just wanted to make another edit). Also, this is off-topic:

Relax, take a break, go to sleep. We got this :)

I know. I had a midnight snack anyway.

9:45 AM
Geez, time must be 4:45 a.m. for you now, huh?

3:45.

OK then, then you can stay up for another hour if you'd like!

Nah, I'll go now. I have a weekend full of homework.

hi, thanks
It is certainly an innocent duplicate, maybe the questions can be merged though?

@Paul No, I don't think it's a duplicate. The code seems to do similar things but they're implemented differently.
I don't think the questions should be merged.

11:55 AM
@SimonAndréForsberg Yes, so, i guess i should just copy my answer from the other question as an answer?

@Paul I don't think simply copying and pasting the exact is a good way of doing it, but you can write an answer for the newer question and also refer to your answer to the other question.

@Paul Do you know some CSS/SASS?

@SimonAndréForsberg Thanks for the advice.

@kleinfreund Just a very basic knowledge of it.

@sim my code is awesome :)

@lol, you'll get a star for that :)
I've been in the get-it-done-fast-zone. I just wanted to get it to work

Do you think it's okay to notfiy someone via @username in a comment on a question to get his attention?

@kleinfreund Sure it is, that's perfectly fine (as long as you have a reason for why you want his attention). Just note that the person you're notifying has to have commented on the question earlier.

Ah, okay. The last sentence is important. Would be quite abusive otherwise.
I've posted a question regarding a SASS mixin (some kind of _function_). Wanted to hear cimmanon's statement on it. He's experienced in this stuff.

Q: Find password to a word document

boxed__lI am using Java and COM4j to communicate with Word. The approach I used here is brute force. I have a password protected .doc, and I forgot its password. Complexity is (26)(maxPassLength). [a-z characters only] Before I run this code and wait for 7-10 days here are my concerns. My main concern...

@kleinfreund I believe that truly illegal things are protected better than with a simple Word Document password.

Cracking password is cracking password, isn't it? hm..

@kleinfreund Yes it is, but just because it's illegal (if cracking passwords is illegal, I am honestly not sure), it doesn't necessarily make it off-topic: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/187593/…
I've been having doubts about such things before, and was a bit surprised of the community's standpoint. (At least SO's, not sure if we can have another standpoint here)

I'm not entirely sure about this. But the answer to this MSO question is probably right.
It's hard to decide.
The thing is, he might crack a document he shouldn't have access for. Or he might not. We never know.
This leaves us with two opportunities. 1. It get's prohibited, restricting the possibilty for the good ones. Less knowledge. 2. It's allowed, thus leaving space for potentially illegal actions.

3:21 PM
Exactly, we never know, in which case we shouldn't judge either.

Right.

And also, I believe there are plenty of other tools available to retrieve a password for a word document. It's not many people who actually try to write their own tool.

Yup. You're having a point. :)

Yeah, well, you do have all month so there's technically no rush :)

4:16 PM
I can't start till I get some work stuff done.
otherwise I'll never work.

A dysfunctional monkey? That'd be something.

I'm waiting for @Malachi to come review my SQL .... ;-)
@200_success - all, thanks for the congrats .... ;-)

I planned on putting up some code for review this week, but I realized that to provide a good test code example I started refactoring RPSLS, and then I started using some other code which I also plan on putting up for review, so I figured that maybe I should put that code up first. And then I suddenly started to work on my TTT-implementation.
And now I'm re-organizing my projects to separate some independent flexible code to it's own projects which will make it easier to put it on github which will make it easier to put up for review :)
Maybe I'm putting too much pressure on myself, maybe I should just be one of those users who simply say "Here's my code, what can I do better?"

^^^ that solution is good for : here's a superficial review for superficial code
If you want a deep, meaningful review, you should present the code well, and make the superficial stuff not part of the problem.

I'm not sure what the "superficial" part is supposed to be, but I will do my best to make all my upcoming questions as good as possible.

4:31 PM
Exactly..... People will tend to review from the easy to the hard, and stop when they get tired.... so, if you have a lot of things that are easy to review ... indenting, variable names, etc... then the reviewer will list all those things.... get a 'page' of commentary, and submit....

Yeah, indenting is not really what I want (and hopefully not need) reviews on :)
variable names, perhaps some, but I don't really want it to be the focus.

.... if you want to get reviewed on the more 'deep' issues you need to make sure that the deep issues are the only things that need attention....
2

Sounds like I should go over my variable names once more before putting it up for review just to be sure :)

5:05 PM
I agree on this. We need more CSS people here, so we have them for reviewing the deep stuff.

> You've earned the "Civic Duty" badge. See your profile.

I guess my commitment to CR exceeds that in SO...

I will be there soon. ;) Since this morning I have the same amount of badges.
Votes will be there soon as well.
Have some interesting questions/answers wort upvoting?

Of course ... ;-)
both!
Actually, how do you feel about reviewing 80's style SQL ?

I could find some real minor issues in SQL, but it was a pretty short time I was in touch with it. In my first apprenticeship, which I quickly quit.
I can determine, if a question/answer is written well enough to deserve my voting power. ;)

Back before there were things like CSS, python, Java, etc..... I used to build applications in stored procedures.... apparently the logic still comes in handy

I guess Tenacious and Unsung Hero are really hard to get here, huh?^^

I'm happy I know about select, insert, update, delete, joining, indexes, where clause, group by, order by... And sometimes I'm having problems even with those!

I can understand the simple queries you post on SEDE. But that's it.

@kleinfreund yeah, I think I will just have to give up on those.... UH will never happen for me.... and with the way the 'crew' is organized now, the tenacious will not happen either.

5:19 PM
Right.. Everything receives atleast one or two up or downvotes. No votes on something is really rare. Especially not on accepted answers.

actually, tenacious will never happen while zombie shooting is happening.

I was so fucking close to tenacious on SO. I go figure how it looks like atm.

Hey, maybe I can help with that .... ;-)

I need 7, to be exact.
45 * 0.2 = 6.8

I can downvote two of your +1 accepted .... I wonder if that will do it... ;-)

That will do it.
As far as I know, +1-1 still counts as zero score accepted.
But I guess it needs some time to realize this, I guess.

@SimonAndréForsberg have you considered trying for Badge:Sportsmanship?

@Simon Newest just shows the recent posted questions without edited/pushed stuff, right?

That is an interesting badge to target.
correct.

@rolfl Yes, I would love to get that one. I'd also like a query to see how close I am :P
@kleinfreund Yep, that's correct.

And not all too hard, right? There are plenty of votes and answers in the tags you guys participate in.

5:44 PM
However, I guess it's not possible to write such a query :(

@SimonAndréForsberg - I had to 'work' for it..... I kept pen+paper for a week or so.

Yes, there are. But we write so good answers that there's rarely anyone else that bothers answering.

But the nice thing is that you have to dig through other people's answers and decide whether to upvote or not.....
and I must have given 200 at least 400 rep .....

It's a good thing. Plus it helps a bit towards zombie shooting.
Only four people have that badge!

No help for zombies.... because if you have an answer there... it's not a zombie.

5:46 PM
Which 3 of them being highly active users of the 2nd Monitor. :))

Hmm, a query for potential answers that needs to be checked for up-voting would be possible, right monkey?

Yes, that should be possible...

Ah, okay, so the accepting is theoretically overkilling. :p

Also, your answer has to be upvoted too.... so you have to have a question with multiple answers, and you have to have a positive score on yours, and also feel that another answer is worth the upvote.

It needs some patience..

5:49 PM
It is a badge that requires you to vote... so it's a 'good thing'....

Wait, how do I have 41 votes today?

(and it also requires you to have 'good' answers).

Bonus for february not having so much days? :D

@rolfl All my answers have positive score.
@kleinfreund Probably an answer or a question that you have voted on has been deleted.

@kleinfreund you downvoted a question today.

Haha, got this message when voting for an answer:
You haven't voted on questions in a while; questions need votes too!

You don't have enough 'competing' answers to get sportsmanship.

@rolfl So I'm up-voting like crazy for nothing right now?

Unsung hero is a hard to earn badge in general.
If you have 100 answers, 26 need to be zero-score accepted. :x
no, 25 still
If one has 40, he'll need 11 though

And I also need to check the posts that are older than Nov 20 '13 at 12:52, and then also in the future only check those that become new. Would it be possible to incorporate this in your query, @rolfl? Something like "Exclude all answers created before xxxxx"
But then if I post a new answer to an old question then.... naaah... then I will up-vote the existing answers when I see them.
Actually, that little feature-request I want sounds like it'd be possible to implement myself
@rolfl Does Sportmanship count for questions where I have posted two answers?

You mean if it counts twice, each for one answer?
Oh, okay. You mean if there are no other competitors than yourself.
Interesting question.

@kleinfreund Or if it would count if I could upvote my other answer :)

Why do you need the date restriction?
@SimonAndréForsberg - in that question where you have two answers, there are no other answers by anyone else.... if they were, then the other answers would be candidates.

@rolfl So that I know which answers I've already voted on.
But would they be candidates * 2 or not? :)

Ahh.... The query is ordered by question ID, if you make it reverse-question-id then the newest ones would be on top.
No, they would not count x2
Or, you can add the question create date, and sort on that too.

Maybe you release the monkey and find out?

The question create date wouldn't help as I might post a late answer somewhere
