A: OpenCV Mat processing time

syb0rgJust looking over the two functions, I would probably say the first function is a better practice. It's shorter (meaning it's more maintainable), it uses fewer variables (which can cause less confusion), and does the same thing as the second function. Overall the advantage is that the first func...

@StackExchange Him again?

@sim looks like he wants his entire project reviewed. he's doing the right thing.

Yeah, he is putting them into different questions and he's also providing good follow-up information when appropriate... but he's just... never stops. Never seems to think: "OK, code is fine now".

I read a meta answer recently that said something about answering questions with fine code - something about knowing when to say 'your code is fine, move on'.. link link link.....
got it
24
A: "Your code seems fine" answers?

Robert CartainoKnowing when to say "That code is done, move on" is just as important a skill as finding fault. If the code is "fine" someone should say so (as an answer) which can then be voted up (or down) by the community. Why force users to only provide criticism where there may simply be none to be had? P...

1:08 AM
Exactly.
I think this user might be looking for that answer.
(Not the meta-post-answer, but for a real answer telling him that his code is fine)

is the code fine? you can write that answer if you want. nothing twitches? naming is A1, all is exactly as it has to be?

Honestly though, I don't know if I would want such an answer or not to any of my future code... In one way, isn't that what we all are struggling for, to write "the best possible" code? But then also, why did we bother posting the question if the code is fine?
But an "your code is fine and here's why: (really long list...)", that would be a nice answer to get :D

Exactly.
We have a whole month to get our TTT ultimate. Some of us are going to come up with some nice pieces of code. Reviewing code that's already like, Wow! is going to be interesting. Explain Why each good design decision was a good one.
And it's still a code review!

Indeed. I think we very often just focus on the parts that needs improvement and then just say "The rest of your code seems fine", perhaps we should start elaborate more on the "The rest of your code seems fine"-part?

for good code, yeah!
that would be quite a cultural change!

1:19 AM
Yes, of course not for code that generally needs a lot of improvement :)

but there's almost always something to improve somewhere..

Indeed there is.

But, I'm out of here.... I have 28 Kindergarten report cards to proof-read.
Trust me ... that's a tough review.

@rolfl Just by scanning parts of his code I already see some things that can shorten it.
For starters, he could remove about 20 lines of commented code...

And he could reduce his typed-in text by a whole lot.

By the way, I have realized that instead of me copying my game board and pasting it here and then adding four spaces in front of each line, I could make my code output the code with four spaces already added!

Okay. I'm removing the tag from the title anyway.

@lol.upvote I was also wondering why it was like that at first, but then I understood that the generics-part of the outer class is somehow included in the inner, which makes a generic array creation impossible.

Even if you do shorten the code down, that is going to be a lot of code for one review. Splitting it up into parts will: make a reviewer have a faster response time; create a more specific review; and make the reviewed code easier for you to implement. — syb0rg 10 secs ago

A DW isn't intended to be normalized, it's supposed to be optimized for SELECT AFAIK; also your dimensions don't seem to be storing history of changes, which may or may not be a requirement/problem. If you want a model review, I think you should avoid Etc columns in your model. But I agree with @syb0rg, DBA probably has a more targeted audience. — lol.upvote 8 secs ago

Jamal Instead of both 3 and 5: if (i % 3 == 0 && i % 5 == 0) you can use 15: if (i % 15 == 0) You're also supposed to print the number if neither of cases apply: else println(i);

@syb0rg When dealing with follow-up questions (i.e. when dealing with all that specific user's questions), versioning them might help a lot I think to get a nice little "timeline" of the questions. What would the alternative be: "Follow up to a follow up to a follow up about a package"?

A: First Scala FizzBuzz implementation

BeyamorFizzBuzz is kind of a difficult example because its simplicity means it looks more or less the same in every language. That said, we can go out of our way to emphasize the functional aspect of Scala. First, we can wrap the core logic of FizzBuzz up in its own function: def fizzBuzz(x:Int) = { ...

Turns out... one can use wildcards while cd'ing through your paths. Cool.

@Jamal I don't really agree with the notice on the deleted answer here: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/10167/… . The main reason why he's downvoted is that he's just plain wrong. If he would have been correct, that answer would have been fine I believe.
As for the question itself, although the question is on-topic, he seems like a troll to me. (I know, it's an old one)

This makes we wonder.. the small "i" is often used in for loops, but this isn't really best practise right?
Only thought about using a lowercase i.

If the for-loop is small and it's purpose is clear, then using a small i is "best practice" I'd say.

Yup. “Small names for small scopes” and such. Also, there's a strong convention from maths to have i, j, k, l, m, n refer to integers

So we wouldn't look like idiots using a lowercase "i" for a slogan like this, huh?
@amon Hey ;)

Not sure, using it in code is one thing, using it in a logo is something different :)
Perhaps if you use a font that looks like a typical code-font.

11:17 AM
Sure, a typical code monospace font would be in use.
Similar to the one lol used in the "Approved" text.

Then you could also use the typical <3 which also has the double meaning of "less than three", even though i < 3 CR wouldn't compile...
perhaps i < 3 * CR ? :)
i <3* CR (making the multiplication quite small probably)
just an idea :) I trust your instincts here, @kleinfreund, whatever the result will be :)

I'm not sure about going all too deep into pseudocode. Small references are cool, tho.

@SimonAndréForsberg depends on your language, multiplication is implicit in Mathematica or Julia

And yes, "<3" is a possibility

Ah, that's true.

11:20 AM
Haha, using the html entity for a unicode heart would be too nerdy xD

As if <3 isn't nerdy? :)

i ♥ CR

Most people won't have an idea what ♥ is probably :)

i ♥ CR
that's better
and with the use of the magnifier instead of CR it's more like "I love Code Reviewing"

@kleinfreund yeah, but html != code (depending in your definition of programming). I'd prefer the syntactically dubious but easier to read "i <3 CR"

11:23 AM
That's true as well. HTML is just a small part of "Code"
<3 is just a bit geeky but not really code.

for (var i = 0; i <3* CR; i++) {
 alert("Post more questions, answers, and don't forget to **vote**");
}
3

@kleinfreund I think "<3" is pretty universal, and not geeky at all. It's a pretty widespread emoticon or (whatever it's called)

Yes, you're right.

The fact that it'd actually compile as code is just a bonus :)

A: Can someone review my Generic Binary Search Tree implementation?

rolflWhen you have a custom implementation of something, and it has internal structures, like, in your case, the BinarySearchTreeNode, there is no real reason to have the interface for it. There is no public use of the interface, and not even your actual tree uses it. It is redundant. You can delete i...

@rolfl Nope, this time I won!
Although the AI did won against me earlier today.
My mind is blown for another reason. A whole new world has opened up for me, basically.

Tested, and is off-topic: jslint.com

Q: Tic-tac-toe 'get winner' algorithm

Roddy of the Frozen PeasAs a first step to attempting the Weekend Challenger Reboot, I decided to first implement a regular 'tic-tac-toe' game and then expand it later to be 'ultimate tic-tac-toe'. WE HAVE OUR FIRST CODE-CHALLENGE QUESTION!
And sorry for caps-lock, it was just worth it. Gotta celebrate some time!

@SimonAndréForsberg Half question, it is just reviewing the algorithm of finding a winner in a normal Tic-Tac-Toe game.
It is a gateway question to the actual code-challenge question.

It's still a start :)
I remember that @lol.upvote posted a Java-sudoku question that was very short also
Not sure how well I should answer that Java question, as that might reveal how I myself am doing it :)

@SimonAndréForsberg I could have answered it, if it was only a 3x3 square as like in my C code.
But even my algorithm for checking a winner is somewhat cumbersome.

I'll answer the question, I won't improve it as much as I have done though

Is this your revised code from the reviews? It looks like it reading the reviews and this code. If so, you this is considered "Not an answer". See here for more details. — syb0rg 2 mins ago
@SimonAndréForsberg And that is fine, since we know he will most likely include the code in his final implementation. Then we can improve it further there.
I'm seeing the potential for a while loop in there.
