@rolfl Can we see all the hats somewhere?

Not all, some a secret.
But you can start with: winterbash2014.stackexchange.com

Holy Carp the internet is slow here today

I might have to switch back to the zombie....

Yeah, it's not cool to wear a hat on a harley... helmets are for harley ninnies.

Q: Winter Bash 2014 Secret Hats

KevinSo far, I've unlocked one of the secret hats. I'm wondering what other secret hats are out there and how to earn them.

Q: Enum, constants, or other to represent chess pieces?? C#

AdmiralAdamaI'm learning C# and I decided to write a chess program to help me practice the concepts I'm learning in my book. I started the Board class tonight, which is going to handle 1) the board state and 2) checking if moves are legal. I feel like I need to give careful consideration to how I represent ...

Imitation Crab should be easy to get here @CaptainObvious ;-)
I may need to get back to my old avatar for hat season, hats don't work well with this one

Q: Case-insensitive String search in Array

PimgdWrote this function for a Stack Overflow answer. It started off pretty bad but in the end I polished it a bit and now I have something I think to be pretty clean. Actually, when I look at the code, this is what I usually write when I'm programming AS3 (minus the documentation, I'm a lazy bastard,...

Sorry :(

chat is slow at updating hats

Hah! I have now succeeded in getting an ironic hat. To celebrate, I will go eat breakfast.
2

@Donald.McLean Wake up -> Get hat -> Wear hat -> Wear underwear -> Wear overwear -> Eat breakfast
Such is the prioritization of dressing oneself

@Pimgd No, I have a child at home, so getting dressed comes first.

@Mat'sMug - me: You earned Chameleon on Code Review!

3:18 PM
does Java have a assign-shift?

@Pimgd I'm pretty sure.

var <<= 4 or something like that to be like var = var << 4

yes

yeah it works
this hat is silly, I need another one that fits better in my green swirly thing

@Pimgd - you can move the hat, you know that, right?
You can move it completely off your avatar if you want to.
Have it'hovering' above it.

3:22 PM
aaand I need to remember that "Nice Question" != "Enlightened" and thus isn't silver
nope, it won't let me pull it off

no hats on CR yet....ugh

it has to sit on the edge

Oh, OK.

oh-shi, there's a leaderboard
CR is 17th

this one could use a couple of votes.... codereview.stackexchange.com/q/73483/18427
@rolfl Thank you
picked a good day to change my pic. it snowed, probably won't be riding for at least a couple of days..... :(

@Malachi One of the hats is for using all your ammo (with 10 questions voted for)....

@rolfl Challenge accepted

As a result, voters are scarce here now, till reload time

any other voting ones I should be aware of so I can strategically use my votes?

@Pimgd There's a check box on the hat dialog that allows you to manually reposition the hat. I saw a picture of someone who had placed the hat on the upper left corner of their swirly thing.

@Malachi Down-vote this... ;-) codereview.stackexchange.com/a/73317/31503

@rolfl why did I do that?

It's a poor answer that's got innaccuracies.
And, the down-vote will earn me a hat, I think, and the delete (now that it is score-0 I can delete it without relying on my mod-powers), will earn me another ;-)

It's, uh, -1 now
by... accident?

3:32 PM
Not sure....
Probably deserves that too.
Other answers on that question are good, so if you have +1's to give ....

I just got 57 hats
mostly for changing my profile pic lol

bah, java doesn't have unsigned int

> You earned Business in the front, Party in the back on Code Review!

@rolfl is that a mod hat?

3:35 PM
I thought the vulcan one would look better.....

what use is binary if it doesn't fit in an int
derp
=D did one shift too many

How do I define 0x0000000100000000L cleanly in Java 6?

@Pimgd You don't really care how it is defined once it has a name.

IPV4_ADDRESS_MAX

@Pimgd private static final long VAR = 1L << 8;

erm
@rolfl try << 32

3:44 PM
Well, OK then.

I think

In that case, you may as well do 0x100000000L

is it 31 or 32?...

32.

3:45 PM

it doesn't do what you'd expect

let's see what happens here.

A: What happens if everything stops?

@Pimgd true. but I don't think the OP wants that kind of reaction to be taken into account

aww

I feel that is the Earth suddenly and abruptly stopped spinning, everything that's not tied down would be flung into space at 1,675 km/hour (based on equator spinning speed)

@Pimgd ah, that explains the three upvotes I got on my answer. One off from 10 now.

ah yeah

A: Case-insensitive String search in Array

Simon André ForsbergDocumentation /** * Searches through an array for a case-insensitive string match. Excellent! * Attempts to imitate Array.indexOf where it can. so apparently, after reading, it's not as bad

Just... this is java... ....
haaang on

@Phrancis It would be a function of latitude, and gravity would prevent anything from escaping, but it would be bad.

ah I see
Java is just stupid

4:05 PM
@Pimgd Oh, you were talking about something else.

AS3 has the sense to check if String.split is receiving a String or a RegExp as delimiter
Java decides based on the content

I think Java always uses a regex probably
it's just that a regular word or so is also a valid regex
Before you all run out of votes, I'll have to pimp this:

A: Tic Tac Toe in MVC

Simon André ForsbergIt looks like your MVC-approach is fine. Your model does not directly know about the view or the controller, which is the most important part. About SOLID, let's see... @SimonAndréForsberg Yes, that is correct.

@Donald.McLean I'm curious now to perhaps ask on Physics.SE ;-)

I'm no longer getting +2 for my edits on SO

Q: What is core.js and where is it?

ArceusMaster0493In every single question about "How many secret hats are there", there's this sentence which I don't understand... ...according to core.js, there are 8 secret hats and... What exactly is core.js, where do you find it, why does it tell you, and how does it tell you? (i.e. What is it)

okay I am getting +2, I just don't know how to click on things =D

Q: Checking for Duplicates, Except

RubberDuckI have a query that returns records that have duplicate names within a given DBSTATUS. I used to do this with a direct connection to the remote oracle database server with this query. (Names changed to protect the innocent, but otherwise, this is my code.) SELECT SUBSTR(NAME, 1, 3) AS CATID, ...

So I'mma leave it in

4:34 PM
I've posted a new answer, but it may not be enough for 7+ upvotes.

@CaptainObvious Uh oh..... three stars on that question...

@Pimgd wat.

@RubberDuck It's a pretty good question. I ventured an answer :)

@Phrancis Good idea. Does Oracle support CTE?
I need to clarify my question a bit.

I think. You labeled it SQL Server so I assumed that's what you were using. Let me RTFM

4:48 PM
It supports it, but what you have there won't work.

The open query sends the query to oracle as text.

I have the most hats on Worldbuilding....lol

WITH w AS (
  SELECT person_id
  FROM person
  WHERE per_db = 'Y')
SELECT per_h_email
FROM person p, w

AND p.per_ok2_email = 'A'
AND p.per_h_email IS NOT NULL
UNION
SELECT po_w_email
FROM poie o, w
WHERE o.person_id = w.person_id
AND o.po_status = 'A'
AND o.po_w_email IS NOT NULL;

> The requirements have changed and now I need to exclude a list of CATIDs from this report, but only when they have a DBSTATUS of 2
It doesn't address that either.
Should I remove the original query? Is it mucking things up? I put it there for context.

4:50 PM
Ok let me delete and revisit later, got a bit of BTW.Work

@RubberDuck I am working on something

@Malachi Cool. Thanks. I'm gonna go grab some food.

@RubberDuck the big problem is trying to send parameters to an OpenQuery

Yeah.... that's ugly. I was trying to avoid that.

@RubberDuck That's a good idea ;-)

hi everyone!
I'm just starting to write some c# + WPF code that I think would make for a good review question here but before I start I'm thinking I might be encountering a X-Y problem. Is the best way to deal with application settings via a data binding?

^^ sounds like a question for @Mat'sMug
doesn't C# have some built-in functionality for dealing with application settings specifically?

5:22 PM
Well that's the thing, I'm very new to C# and it wouldn't surprise me if this is a classic X-Y problem situation.

@Malachi it's closed now, so I don't see any need for it.

@SimonAndréForsberg people can still vote on it, and it won't be deleted

@Jamal Nice, now post it on Code Review and let's see what it would get in the real world!
@Malachi I don't see being able to vote on it as a bad thing.
There are literary thousands of questions on SO which are off-topic with today's rules, but wasn't before. Not even half of them has a moderator lock.

@SimonAndréForsberg it shouldn't generate negative votes for those users either though, the question and answer are from a time when Code Review was different, right?

@shuttle87 look into app.config and the configuration object.

5:33 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg true

@RubberDuck ok will do

Haha. Yes @Vogel612! A Zombie Hunting duck I am. Got one in my sites.

Say I have an application that needs to store a location for a logging file, is the app settings an appropriate place to put that?

@SimonAndréForsberg I'm just afraid that the instructor may discover it in the future. He didn't let us keep our midterms because he didn't want future students to know the answers.

my 6th MSO answer!

I need starred messages....

5:41 PM
@shuttle87 Yes! But I strongly recommend using a logging framework - give NLog a try!
monking!

Were this a production app and not a small in house utility I think that's the route I'd go.
I'll keep that in mind though as I'm soon to be working on something bigger.

IMO NLog is the way to go whatever the app is, as soon as it needs logging. It's very lightweight and all configured with simple XML in either nlog.config, or app.config. It even takes care of archiving your log files for you!
and if you're into DI, there's an extension for Ninject that supports NLog, so all you need to do is constructor-inject an ILogger anywhere, and you're good to go.. it's just automagic.
(there's also one for Log4Net but I've never used that one)

bahhahahaha HATS!

ugh.. I can't seem to get Chameleon....

@Mat'sMug Just create an account on a new SE site!
And vote on something or whatever

but I want it on CR!!!

But you can't!
You get it from opening an account on a new SE site!

@Mat'sMug - me: You earned Chameleon on Code Review!

You get it for editing your profile I thought.

5:57 PM
Oh that may work

I did that.. twice

Hmmm
Maybe it's one of the unstated qualifications... like, it has to be a "substantial" edit?
