I would make a joke but it could get me banned.

@0celo7 go for it, you can count on us (to laugh :-)

@0celo7 30 mins won't matter much. Just go walk around a bit and come back

Actually I suppose there is something we could discuss during this chat session.
How actively should this chat room be managed by the room owners?
(Flags by other mods/10k users we can't do anything about)
For example we tend not to delete posts unless they're actually offensive. Should we be more proactive in deleting posts that aren't offensive but that some chat room members find annoying?

4:09 PM
I am alive!

Help
I'm so sick of paperwork

@Blue I’m in class actually
I keep getting banned while I’m busy so it’s really just an annoyance

Anonymous
@0celo7 $\text{concentrate}$

If I need to reach the important people on the chat i h ave other means

@JohnRennie No. This is a (semi)public forum and some chat members need not dictate how this is managed.

4:10 PM
@0celo7 Who is important here?

The people I can contact outside of the chat.
I’m trying to find your info, so don’t worry

So, is it fine if I post some images from a sketch I made?
Along with specifications?

@JaimeGallego I'm guessing that the room members are generally cautious about anything that smells like censorship.
But we do get occasions where repeated pointless posts cause arguments and bad feeling.

@0celo7 See, they're doing it to help you with your procrastination issues.

4:13 PM
@JohnRennie How does one define "pointless"?

@Slereah? Can I upload some sketches and specifications in here?

@dmckee The flag abusers are morally correct

Honest question.

@dmckee why do you think I have procrastination issues

@JaimeGallego.....what did I just arrive into?

4:14 PM
@0celo7 You are to be found haunting internet chat spaces at all hours...

@JaimeGallego pointless would be posts that aren't going to result in a productive discussion.
We all post pointless stuff at times e.g. my photos of my meals aren't especially erudite.

Anonymous
@JohnRennie Yeah, I think they should be trashed. For example Kenshin's rants about his revolutionary theories

Let's talk about Donald Trump's hair 👱

Actually Kenshin's posts would be a good example.

4:16 PM
Anyway, is it fine if I can lighten things up a bit?

BTW I'm going to cancel the stars on that FAGGOTS post on the grounds that some fool might actually take offence and flag it.

@dmckee the chat is open on my second monitor

Anonymous
Actually, I think we do have a good idea about who is talking in good faith and who is talking in bad faith, depending on the context. But the problem is the sudden outsiders who sometimes have to come in to handle flags (it's not completely their fault either)

Can we just make a rule that it is illegal to be Kenshin

@JohnRennie Ah come on, this gave us a good laugh
No need to unstar it

4:17 PM
I wrote a 158 page thesis in two months. I don’t think I have procrastination issues in general

I guess the problem is when someone is perceived as trolling.

3 months

@JohnRennie I feel that "pointless" is a rather pointless criterion - idle conversations about food or music or whatever are both pointless and perfectly harmless

Anonymous
@Slereah That would solve half our problems I guess :P

food does not cause bad feeling
food is good

4:18 PM
Who is Kenshin? Never heard of him

A more appropriate criterion would be how offensive something is bound to be.

WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING?!

The one we've been using because it is common sense

@ACuriousMind I agree, but then I'm hoping a clearer policy will emerge from the discussion. My use of pointless was just a cockshy.

Can we all just calm down?
Because this.....is not productive in and of itself.

Anonymous
4:19 PM
@FutureHistorian We are all calm, discussing an important issue. So you can rest!

Is it?
Oh. Still, hard to tell on the Internet.

@0celo7 He is some video game character, @Kenshin might know more

No, he’s from a manga.

@FutureHistorian I think everyone is rather calm, actually, what gives you the impression that it is otherwise?

Learn your culture @SirCumference

4:20 PM
That's not my culture :P

I’m surprised you’re not a weeb

You have that aura

> Weebs are harmless. They know they're disliked by many people but they don't give a fuck because they know they're sugoi (awesome).
:-)

4:21 PM
I've watched maybe 4 or 5 anime before, don't think that qualifies

I don’t dislike weebs

The fact that you are all arguing over some policies that may or may not be beneficial to the community, and it is probably going nowhere?
Well, were until just-now.

@FutureHistorian just let the crazy people argue

Oh.
Anyway, can I post some sketches and specifications in here?

@JohnRennie I just think idolizing a country they don't belong to is a bit odd

4:23 PM
@JaimeGallego there are things that are not really offensive in themselves but which I nevertheless will take action on, such as someone refusing to drop a line of conversation after having been repeatedly asked to by several people, for example

@FutureHistorian From an experiment apparatus?

Like if I had some odd obsession with the UK, wouldn't you be taken aback @JohnRennie?
:43775960 That timing tho

@FutureHistorian wouldn't they be better in the Worldbuilding chat?

I posted them already and....they are rather quiet.
Weird......
:(

@SirCumference not at all. I would simply assume you were a BREXIT supporter

4:24 PM
Fair enough :P

I just got a notice of a chat session starting here soon. What's going on? Is there a special announcement that's going to happen?

BTW I'm going to cancel the stars on that I'm going to cancel the stars on that FAGGOTS post on the grounds that some fool might actually take offence and flag it

@ACuriousMind Hmm, that is a fair point. It may still be considered "offensive" in the broad sense.

@D.Hutchinson no just a regular biweekly chat session

Anonymous
@D.Hutchinson Nothing much. It's a biweekly event. We don't have anything special to speak about today

4:25 PM
ah, ok cool

@JohnRennie Soon you'll need a metalanguage

If I catch the person flagging those posts ... :-)

I thought physics.se was terminating or something :(

Anyway, since Worldbuilding SE seems too quiet, mind if I post the sketches in here?

@D.Hutchinson Lol

(It's not complete yet)

@Blue I saw the link but going through them on mobile is tedious, I'll look at them later today

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Sure, np

4:27 PM
Meh. Screw it. I will just put the sketch in here for future reference. Worldbuilding SE is too quiet.

@FutureHistorian It is quite busy right now, if you need to, you can post it to the other channel

Oh.
Where to?

"Physics Meta"

 Backup Room – The h Bar

A backup room for when The h Bar is busy. (chat.stackexchange....

@FutureHistorian leave it till after the chat sessions ends (in 30 minutes) then post here

Oh.
Fair enough.

4:32 PM
Awkward silence :/

So.....
What happened?

Oh don't mention other rooms here

@Blue what I do think would be useful regardless of the specific examples would be some sort of estimation how common such low-quality questions actually are in proportion to the total volume - we get a lot of traffic that's been steadily increasing, so that the total number of bad apples goes up is to be expected anyway
We humans tend to overestimate the actual proportion of things that catch our negative attention

@JaimeGallego That's for metaphysics

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Those were the examples of the "terrible" questions. I didn't include the "bad" questions. I see bad typesetting on almost 1/5th-1/4th of the main site questions (didn't include that). And yes, we do have an increasing amount of traffic but not a proportional increase in number of reviewers or high quality users. So that does seem something like to worry about

Anonymous
4:38 PM
We could do an analysis of the percentage of questions which are terrible in the past month. But I'm not sure we need to

I noticed that the standard of the questions has gone down.

For instance, last time I looked at HW closures, the rate of closed as HW questions is rather stable over long time spans, but it sure feels we're "flooded" by HW compared to some time ago
So there's not really a new problem there although it feels like that to many reviewers since the total numbers in the close queue are going up

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind The thing to worry about is: Are we having a proportional rise in good quality questions too? Say if the initial percentage of hw questions were 60% and good questions were 40%, is that ratio now becoming ~80:20, or is it still similar to 60:40

In some ways, it might be an inevitable side effect of growing larger and larger
@Blue I just said that the rate of closed as HW questions is rather stable
Good vs bad is off course a harder statistic to track :P

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Hmm. But well, as I spotted around 10 questions in the last week weren't closed as hw, but they look pretty terrible to me

Anonymous
4:42 PM
Those are the ones I put in that google docs

I see lot of HW questions compared to nice thoughtful ones

Anonymous
So, basically our issue is: How to increase number of active reviewers and editors? I'm sure we can come up with a (partial) solution if we give it some thought

The HW closure rate might look stable, but I would hazard a guess that high-rep posters are getting tired of going through the close queue.

Yeah, bad - but - not - closeable questions are not very well visible in the statistics tools, especially since even crap tends to get up voted :P
@Blue that is a different but definitely worthwhile question

Anonymous
I think a short period of mod-singlehandedness can improve the quality of the questions which might in turn bring back the quality users

4:46 PM
@JohnRennie @BernardoMeurer I found a museum in Seattle which allows SSH to some mainframes live.
I created an account in a CDC 6500 supercomputer.

Anonymous
But as you said, it wouldn't be too wise to put too much pressure on the mods either...

That's a 60s era machine

IMHO years ago there were plenty of "names" answering questions, but there are relatively few today.

@JaimeGallego There would be some nostalgia value in playing with an IBM 370, since that's what I learned to code on. But I suspect the novelty would wear off :-)
And a lot of those early mainframes were distressingly easy to crash.

@Blue I'm wary of creating an expectation that we mods do more review work since that does not entice anyone to become a reviewer
Rather the opposite

4:50 PM
@ACuriousMind I think there is an argument for hammering blatant homework questions.

@JohnRennie A PDP-11 as well. I have to use ed to edit files.

@JohnRennie I already do that to most that cross my path

I never used a PDP-11. Cambridge didn't have any and by the time I left the PDP-11s were an endangered species.

Anonymous
@ACuriousMind Well, that's not a bad point either :P

@AndreCoin Pardon?

So, who want to talk about physics?

Anyone else feel like traying to crack a nut?

Q: What are common methods to remove discretization on experimental measures?

zexotI have some experimental data, and since the measurements are digital, the data is discretized/quantized/rounded/truncated. I need to know if there are general methods, or common methods, to "smooth" the data, remove the discretization, or identify what type of distortion it has (rounding is not...

I'm tempted to suggest that the OP read One-Hundred-and-One Ways to Render Your Analysis Useless by D. Oant Doodis.
@JaimeGallego I got to type commands into the (fan-fold) terminal of a beefed up PDP-11 once.
Under close supervision from the couple of BoFHs who had charge of the machine.
This was in the mid 1990s.

Anonymous
@dmckee I think you should. Using regression to smooth-en data is a terrible idea in general :P

5:03 PM
Hi, everybody.
@dmckee That one is weird.

heya

@Blue In the end that kind of snark isn't constructive, and the OP seems to already have decided to ignore my advice.

OP did explain a bit more about what they're trying to do though, so maybe we'll get somewhere.
@JohnDuffield ::raises hand::
But only if it's statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, noise, or the physics of elephant trunks.

Holy hell, what is wrong with MS Word

No relativity for me today.

5:04 PM
This is the buggiest program I've dealt with in a while

@SirCumference If Bernardo were here, he'd say it's proprietary maleware.

@SirCumference Everything?

@dmckee "BoFH", now I haven't heard that acronym in a while.

Freezes randomly, crashes in the middle of my work, and refuses to start up 50% of the time

@SirCumference What OS?

5:05 PM
@JaimeGallego They would shout at people who walked too close to the machine, because every once in a while it would crash if bumped.

All of this is extremely frequent, i.e. once a minute or so
@DanielSank Mac

@JaimeGallego I worked (part time) as a BOfH at Cambridge :-)

This was part of the inherited data acquisition system in a old experimental area of Fermi-lab that we were bringing back on line.

At this point I think I might move to Apple's blatant ripoff "Pages"

A year later the PDP was replaced with something newer, but for a brief shining moment it was useful once more.

5:06 PM
@SirCumference you're using Word on OSX?

@JohnRennie Yeah, why?
Pretty sure everyone uses Word

Anonymous
Just use google docs. Makes life easier, unless you're using some very specific Word features

@SirCumference "Everyone"?!
wat?

I use Word every day on Windows and I can't remember the last time it crashed.

I haven't used MS Word in years.

5:07 PM
@Blue I need to upload a lab report, which requires equations to be typed up. That means I need word :/

@SirCumference How on Earth does "need to be typed" mean "needs to be MS Word"?

@DanielSank : I've spent a lot of time recently reading up on the history of quantum mechanics. And quantum field theory. Which in the early days was the same thing as quantum electrodynamics. There's an interesting essay by Tian Yu Cao and Silvan Schweber dating from 1993. It's called the conceptual foundations and the philosophical aspects of renormalization theory.

@DanielSank I've never heard of a person who doesn't use Word
That's like a person who watches videos on a site other than Youtube

Anonymous
@SirCumference LaTeX ?

5:08 PM
@SirCumference I can't tell if you're joking or not.

@Blue Gave that a try. Somehow that was much more work and trouble

@JohnRennie Gee, they just went mad with the latest supercomputer! 1 MHz!!

@DanielSank Being completely honest

That is a pretty cool website for typing equations fast and converting to a TeX document (or even Word)

I don't need something like LaTeX if I'm just using a few equations
I'm not sure why I'm having trouble with Word when OneNote, PP, Excel etc. work fine

Anonymous
5:10 PM
Hmm. I think in google docs there are some tricks to insert equations.

Anonymous
Word works fine for me though

Anonymous
On Windows

@Blue There are, but there's no way to upload such a document to a website

Anonymous
@SirCumference Download to your PC as docx or pdf and then upload

@dmckee The US Air Force still uses them for missile silos.
Difficult to maintain, but god are they airgapped against intruders.

5:15 PM
@SirCumference Don't need, but I'd use it anyway.
@Blue It's not a trick, it's a built-in feature. You can even type latex syntax into it.
@SirCumference You can export Google Docs into a variety of formats including pdf and MSWord.

Anonymous
@DanielSank Does it render LaTeX automatically ? I had to use RobJohn's bookmark to render it

@SirCumference I know a lot of people who only use Word under protest. I'm one of them.

Anonymous
I don't know much about google docs features

@JaimeGallego I can't remember how fast the OS370 was. In any case mainframes had so much hardware support that it's hard to compare to a PC.

@Blue These days you can use latex directly in the equation editor.

5:17 PM
It's a rare term when I don't have to run it once, but I can generally keep the number of times I run that thing down to single digits per year.

@dmckee Me too.

Anonymous
@DanielSank Oh wow. Didn't notice that

MS Word has the massive inconvenience of being a proprietary format that is ill-suited to version control, and only running on commercial software.
I'd much rather write text in my choice of editor and run it through LaTeX.

I recently had to use word at work and had to repeatedly delete stuff like \textbf I had typed without thinking :P
2

For what it's worth, on my own computers (as opposed to the work computers) I use Word 2003. It was the last version focussed on functionality rather than feature bloat, and it's dramatically faster than the current versions.

5:21 PM
Also MS Word is terrible for equations

@ACuriousMind I do that. And I also sometimes try to *emphasize* or **bold** words in LaTeX documents with markdown syntax. ::sigh::

is there drag and drop in latex, cause other than that, latex is superior

I think the last time I used word for equations was in school when I didn't know TeX existed

^ Me, too. I even knew that LaTeX was a thing. I just didn't have an environment then.

@Secret that's a feature of an editor, not LaTeX itself

5:23 PM
@JohnRennie So... while you report that Word doesn't crash etc., you also report that you're fifteen years behind on versions because the new ones are less performant.
That's a shining advertisement for MS products if I ever heard one.
2

What is up dramalertnation

I see. I am mainly using texshop on mac

It's your boy keemstar here

and sometimes trying to position figures can be annoying

@DanielSank At work I have to use the latest version

5:23 PM
@BernardoMeurer look up a few posts.

And I have no interest in endorsing MS products

@JohnRennie Didn't say you did.
Just noting what sounds like an unfortunate user experience.

Yes, I find the 15 year old Word 2003 much nicer to use than Word 2016.

MS is excellant for gaming, but suck at document stuff. Just excel alone with more than 1000 rows, it already lags like there is no tomorrow

@Secret Drag and drop of what?

5:25 PM
What's with the boom of activity on IPS.SE

@DanielSank I want to do something like free positon my images anywhere I want to in a document instead of having to guess where to put it with margin parameters and so on

@Secret I've seen Excel (all versions) used for massive financial applications with no problems.

I still don't know how to talk to people without sounding broken, maybe I should ask a question about that

@Secret Ah.
That's not a thing that TeX is particularly good at.

@Secret I recently switched fully to Linux and have gotten almost every game to run - the situation has much improved in recent years

5:26 PM
Try latest version of LyX. Maybe they have a feature for that now.

@JohnRennie ah, then it must be my old mac then, well,I have not opened that documented for a long time, so perhaps it will run fine on my current mac

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen Place for you ;)

Anonymous
Yeah you should

@Secret that's on purpose - TeX is supposed to be better at placement than you are ;)

@ACuriousMind Linux had caught up with the gaming stuff? It seems I need a lot of catching up to do about the developments of linux

5:28 PM
@Secret On some games

@Secret Around half of my Steam library runs naively on Linux, and much of the rest works with Wine after a bit of fiddling

@Blue More massive legends should join that site tbh

That's supposed to be "natively" but I like the typo:D

I will definitely need to catch up with the gaming industry side of things after this PhD...

5:29 PM
I'll ask a question after my exams, which end at, uh, 6th

@DanielSank from the description, sounds nice, I will definitely give it a try and see how much it can improve my thesis formatting efficiency

@BalarkaSen Telling other people how to live their lives is very attractive to many netizens ;P

Yeah...
That's precisely part of the reason I don't like that site very much
I mean I can see it as helpful but

Anonymous
@BalarkaSen I have something to ask there too: "How to deal with situations when I have nothing much to speak with the acquaintance passing by me (but it looks rude if I don't) ?" :P That's a pretty serious issue when it comes to human contact

@BalarkaSen lol?

5:35 PM
What about communicating vessels here? youtu.be/44Huos4glis

@Secret You don't have to place figures and the like in floats, which means that they get typeset at the point in the text where you \includegraphics (or other command them).
I do that with small tables from time-to-time.

@Blue the acquaintance is thinking the same as you. Just say hi, got to dash and both of you will be relieved.

But if you want captions and numbering and references you'll have to find a package that implements that in a non-floating way or write some small commands yourself.

@JohnRennie HAH
HAHAHAH
Amazing

Anonymous
lol. That's actually good advice

5:36 PM
Hmmm ... well any "better" floats package than iplements the H positioning hint should work, so that's already done.

@Blue embrace the German way of not saying anything if there's nothing to say ;}

@ACuriousMind Eh. Now that justifies the actions of German weirdos I met in real life

We didn't drive out the dreaded krauts to learn their ways

At Breakfast they just sternly looked at the table while eating

@Slereah Edgy - I'd delete that ...

@JohnRennie Random thing about that in my life: Usually when I and aquitance and + encounter each other, we will say hi everytime as if it is some kind of recognition gesture between two spies. This is so common that when they stopped saying hi and they are not in a hurry to something or look depressed, then it is often a sign the social relation have decayed
say hi = wave hands, smile etc.

5:40 PM

@Slereah My superhero name is The Dread Kraut

@Secret it's not social decay to be uninterested in people who are of no interest to you

When you read early 20th century french books, people were really peeved at the whole Alsace Lorraine thing

(well the + means aquitance or above, thus it does happen to some of my classmates and friends sometimes)

@JohnRennie question

5:42 PM

@Tanuj Here or Problem Solving?

@ACuriousMind do you acknowledge the other perseon’s existence

@JohnRennie here would be good

If $f$ is a continuous, $2\pi$ periodic function where $f(x+\pi) = f(x)$ for $x\in [-\pi,\pi]$, does that in some way imply the Fourier series is $\sum_{n\geq 1} c_n e^{inx}$?

@DanielSank Amazing

5:43 PM
I don't see why it isn't $\sum_{n\in \mathbb{Z}} c_n e^{inx}$

@0celo7 A curt nod is an acceptable way of greeting any but your closest friends

@JohnRennie More accurately, when those aquitances, classmates and friends are interested in me, they will often say hi. So when one day they don't say it and the circumstances cannot excuse them, then it is a sign social decay occurs.

@JohnRennie any ideas ?

of course, one such scenario of excusing is we don't quite recognise each other until bumped into each other again in some event

Anonymous
@Secret Yeah, I know. It can get real complicated. That's why I prefer to hide till they pass XD

5:45 PM
@ACuriousMind seems like a show of weakness.

@Tanuj it's a bit late in the day for thermodynamics. I'll have a look tomorrow if you haven't already solved it by then.

@Secret Or they just have a bad day, or they don't feel like it...

@JohnRennie okay sure.

@0celo7 Having close friends? Definitely /s

Meanwhile, my subconscious don't really trust people, thus I use all these cues over the span of 1-2 years to monitor the health of my social relationships. They sometimes can get detailed enough to allow me to plot time series of our social relationships
@JaimeGallego the former is included as part of the excuse, the latter... welll... I never thought about that

5:47 PM

@ACuriousMind no, nodding to random people.

these graphs are quite interesting though. Some of these are like delta functions, some of these are sinusodial, and one of these is a linear decay.

Anonymous
@Secret But well, things get much simpler when you stop bothering about what others are thinking of you, and you just go on doing your tasks. From what I know about you, you seem to over-analyze actions/thought-processes of other people

Actually in general, I often over analyse pretty much anything without awaring. But in general, I don't really udnerstood people well

Anonymous
Nobody does. Some pretend to and some just don't care about understanding.

5:49 PM
"Ey baby, wanna have a Kronecker delta night and never see each other again?"

@JaimeGallego How's it going

Btw, most people (e.g. half of my undergrad classmates that met in 1st year but all decayed away by the time 3rd year is reached) have this characteirstic bell curve shape:

@BernardoMeurer Eventually I'm staying here to study.
