5:01 PM
@0celo7 Are you already at university?

have you people never heard of texting...

@obe lol, I asked the same thing yesterday

@ACuriousMind when I was in Germany, in middle school, we didn't really have a word for texting because no one had phones

obe
@0celo7 What is texting?

Was is just "SMS"?

5:03 PM
Texting:

@0celo7 Oddly enough, we just call it schreiben, I think, without specifying that the "writing" is texting, and not with pens or something.

"SMSen" was used by some, but I haven't heard it in quite a time, especially since one rarely writes actual SMS nowadays.

obe
Texting is a lowlife thing to do.

1. Rachel: hey hoe whats crackin'?

Cheryl: hey slut i'm just texting like 400 different people at the same time.

5:05 PM
I think I need some help with my understanding of galaxy rotation curves.. is this the appropriate chat for that?

@obe not really

@MagnusWolffelt In principle, yes. Though I'm not sure someone is around right now who's expertise that is.
That's not your type of astrology, is it @KyleKanos?

The Observatory (Astronomy) isn't usually busy, so this might be your best choice.

In principle this is a vidya chat
sometimes we talk about physics
mostly we don't

obe
@0celo7 It used to be a nakahara exercise chat.
I liked it better then.

5:07 PM
@MagnusWolffelt What do you need to understand?

@obe it could be a Straumann chat but ACM is busy making salad

well I think my question is pretty basic.. as I understand wikipedia, stars in galaxies are, at "high altitude" moving much faster than expected, without escaping the galaxy.. correct?

Not high altitude, further out radially

well yes, that's what I mean

@ACuriousMind That Skyrim total conversion looks sufficiently awesome that I might consider a clean install to play it when it comes out.
RIP framerate, it looks a lot busier than the vanilla game.
Gonna lock at 30 ::sigh::.

5:10 PM
@MagnusWolffelt But yes, they're moving around a 200 km/s at further distances, it takes about 500 km/s to escape the galaxy.

@KyleKanos and, and this is where I get confused... are the inner stars also moving faster than expected, or do they fit as expected with normal newtonian gravity from visible mass?

@ACuriousMind Sold.
Desert Skyrim yes pls.

@MagnusWolffelt No, they fit expected gravitational velocities

right.. so.. this can be explained by dark matter? but would this dark matter not also affect the velocity of the inner stars, making them also not move as expected?

5:14 PM
Dominance of the respective gravitational potentials

aaah that question seems very relevant :)
didn't see it before
thanks

(though that question can help elucidate the whole matter)
No problem

very cool.. "In short, the reason dark matter maintains the (nearly) constant velocity curve is due to its linear dependence on radius, whereas the others fall off as 1/r."
other quick question: do discs (as opposed to spheres) form due to non-gravitational interaction?

the best thing about dark matter is that Zwicky, the discoverer, looks like a giant prick

Discs usually form due to conservation of angular momentum

5:20 PM

obe
@MagnusWolffelt Your question had nothing to do specifically with galaxy rotation curves.

@obe It kinda did.

obe
@HDE226868 Link to the direct reference to a rotation curve.

@Slereah He was a prick

@obe It was partially about why the observed vs. no dark matter curves line up for low values of $r$ but diverge for high values of $r$.

5:23 PM
He kicked a few military officers of the premises a national lab because they weren't scientists

@KyleKanos and, and this is where I get confused... are the inner stars also moving faster than expected, or do they fit as expected with normal newtonian gravity from visible mass?
@KyleKanos I'd love to have the chutzpah to do that.

He thought they wouldn't be qualified to understand what he was offering to sell them
Walter Baade, Zwicky's collaborator on many things, swore that Zwicky was going to kill him and was often referred to as a Nazi by Zwicky (Baade was German)

what does the dollar signs around r mean here? like $r$ ?

A: Should chat have TeX support?

robjohnI will leave the original post for historical reference, but as mentioned in the Update below, all four bookmarks are located on this installation page. There are four bookmarks: start ChatJax installs MathJax and starts a loop that renders $\LaTeX$ as needed. This is intended for use in chat, ...

@MagnusWolffelt We have MathJax enabled in chat
The dollar sign is what makes it render as LaTeX, if you have "ChatJax" enabled

5:26 PM
I see

There's a suggested edit in the queue on this question (revision history). The edit wants to revert back to original version

other question, (lol).. is there any evidence that gravity can be occluded, sort of like light? that for example a small moon behind big planet experiencing slightly less gravity from the star, than expected?

@KyleKanos Well...not wrong in this case, I'd say, but not really the purpose of suggested edits, either

I mean, it does deviate from authors intent since it was the author who changed it.
But that reject reason says original intent of post

Q: Can gravity be shielded, like electromagnetism?

user6090If I remember well, they said that it can't, but I do not know why. Yes, I meant if gravity can be shielded using something like a Faraday cage (or something else?). Thank you.

Also, this and other links

5:35 PM
IIRC you can shield gravity but it requires a ludicrous combination of exotic matter

thanks

I should change my username to a picture of my cat too. That seems to be the trend.

...your username?
Also, I'm not a cat :P

I'm not a cat either

derp, picture. I guess I'm half awake

5:39 PM
@ACuriousMind I'm going to name my second cat after you

@KyleKanos on the internet no one knows if you're a cat

@0celo7 Um...thanks, I guess?

@0celo7 Change "cat" to "child".

I always wanted to step into Einstein's footsteps ;)

No, Bjoern
(which I still pronounce in my head as bajoran)

nobody names their cat Bjoern :P

@KyleKanos Me too and I speak the language

@KyleKanos lol

I hate when people speak English and put a forign accent on foreign words. All or nothing.

I do actually
Being French and all

@ACuriousMind do you recall when we talked about the difference between the moore method and the socratic method?

@skillpatrol Yes

@ACuriousMind Anyway I found this
Halmos makes it clear.
btw moore was only 3 years younger than einstein

5:56 PM
Patrick Moore?

Michael Moore?

Q: Is it possible to undo a review action

LexI just reviewed a proposed edit on a SO question. At first it seemed that the edit was just just "how to" to "how-to". So I rejected the edit. However, my mistake turned out to be that there also was a change to a hyperlink in that edit which was relevant and should be approved. Is there any way ...

@KyleOman - Nope. What was the review?

thanks @HDE226868

Rotate 45 degrees to the left, resubmit

6:22 PM
oww my brain... can't decide whether I'm being tricked with perspective, or with image editing :(

@KyleOman this

the shadows appear fairly convincing, so I'm leaning perspective, but... oow

6:46 PM

Ah, but that's only to "particpate". You can still participate.

@HDE226868 lol

@ACuriousMind what did you think of the vid?

6:49 PM
@skillpatrol I bookmarked it for later viewing, so I don't think anything of it yet

enjoy pal :)
let me know

I will

Hi @JohnDuffield

what video is this

1 hour ago, by skill patrol
@ACuriousMind Anyway I found this

6:58 PM
ic

@0celo7 : no, a black hole isn't "a region of the spacetime manifold which lies outside of the past of null infinity". LOL! Where on Earth did you get that Humpty-Dumpty lost-in-maths definition from? Really. Come on, tell me. Do you know any physics at all? How old are you? @skill patrol: Hi.

@JohnDuffield If you knew what you were talking about, you'd see that that "Humpty-Dumpty definition" is actually the precise statement of what it means for light being unable to escape a black hole. Something which is not in the past of future null infinity is something from which light cannot escape, i.e. something which is black, to say it in terms you might understand.
The advantages of this way of phrasing it is that it does not resort to any coordinate choice at all, and is a statement about the actual structure of the spacetime instead of singularities which may or may not be visible in certain coordinate choices.

7:15 PM
Sooty?

Sweep?

Larry the Lamb?

+20?
I didn't even know about it.

@ACuriousMind : I know what I'm talking about. Light doesn't escape a black hole because at the event horizon the coordinate speed of light is zero. Einstein called it the speed of light. @skill patrol : sock puppets.

7:16 PM
I agree, it's not really a great answer. It is ultimately correct to first order, however.

@JohnDuffield No, light can't escape a black hole by definition of black hole.

just like division by 0 at the singularity

@JohnDuffield Hawking & Ellis (1973), Wald (1984), Straumann (2013) are three that I own.

@JohnDuffield The coordinate speed in which system, and why do you privilege that system over others? Do you know what the term general covariance means? All actual statements must be able to be phrased in a way that is independent of a choice of coordinate system, since nothing prescribes a particular choice of system.

@skillpatrol That produces a unicorn, durr.

7:20 PM
@0celo7 ohhhhh b/c of the simple pole

@NeuroFuzzy Yup. Use the fact that a pole (point, the singularity) in twistor space is a null geodesic, and at the end of every rainbow null geodesic is a pot of gold unicorn.
@ACuriousMind your coordinate system is triggering me, check its privilege!!
@JohnDuffield Aww, you got me
::cries::

@JohnDuffield Do you want page numbers?

(I hope that's the actual song, it's blocked in Germany :D)

@JohnDuffield I have suspended you for one hour to cool down because of repeated rude remarks you have made. I would appreciate it if everyone else would avoid discussing it, though, as it would be piling it on. Thanks, all. Back to the schlocky pop songs.

7:24 PM
@JohnDuffield I know it's not a great answer. I said as much. That was literally my first answer.

@ACuriousMind poor you

@JohnDuffield nobody wants to be defeated or called a "kid" and told to beat it

Alright people, back to video games and cat pictures.

later pal

I have to read shit about feelings
And time management

7:27 PM
Whoops, I called Michael Jackson "schlocky".

I don't even know what "schlocky" means

You should, you're one.

@0celo7 Oh, no, feelings!
I had those once.
It was awful
I got better

nothing more than feelings?

16 hours ago, by ACuriousMind
@0celo7 What, you expect people to retain their emotional state for longer than a few seconds?
Essential (health-related)
Important (academics, work)
Optional (social)
Important and Essential should be swapped.

7:29 PM
that^ better not be blocked in germany

Indeed it is not.

is this now a music thread?

I'm...not sure

beat it kid

This is the hbar, it's whatever we want it to be!
@0celo7 Blocked :D

"Eat It" is a 1984 song by comedy music artist "Weird Al" Yankovic. It is a parody of "Beat It" by Michael Jackson. The track was both a commercial and critical success, earning Yankovic a Grammy Award. According to Yankovic, when he presented his lyrics to Jackson for review, he didn't know what kind of reaction he'd get. Jackson allegedly thought it was amusing, and agreed to allow the parody. On October 19, 1989, the RIAA certified "Eat It" as a gold single. == Reception == The single reached number 1 in Australia, and it was his highest-charting U.S. single on the Billboard Hot 100 at number...

@0celo7 Blocked :D

7:31 PM
STAAAAAP

@skillpatrol what

the insanity

9.5 minutes of awesome

ooh I was annoyed but i just realized i brought my headphones to the library so i can actually listen to some!

go to 2:15

@KyleKanos Not blocked. And nice.

what is this music @KyleKanos
why do you listen to such things

7:34 PM
beat it head hunter kid
or do you prefer kid head hunter?

@0celo7 Why should he not?

only good music is hard dance, hardcore, rap and dubstep

@0celo7 Video Game Remix. It's originally from either Tales of Phantasia or Tales of Symphona

@0celo7 Tsk.

@ACuriousMind prove me wrong
Write a proof.

@NeuroFuzzy figures

Awesome guitar 1/2way in.

@0celo7 Figures? I didn't link that before did I...?

@NeuroFuzzy it's very CA

@ACuriousMind are you serious?
the video is pretty retarded

@0celo7 I'm not sure :D

Alright, we know now that you really like rap ;)

> Minimize other time-consuming activities and distractions (TV, video games, etc.)
@ACuriousMind no
I have a lot more hardstyle.
@ACuriousMind Why does Germany have such barbaric YouTube laws?

7:43 PM
@0celo7 Dunno. The GEMA is an archaic organization which is opposed by many individual artists, but it somehow still exists.

@0celo7 Germans aren't allowed to have fun

@KyleKanos I expected this
@ACuriousMind VPN?
I mean, it's pretty ridiculous that artists can post music on VEVO and get blocked in DE

@0celo7 Is possible, but annoying, especially since they periodically block also known VPN servers used by Germans

Q: Would a person gain or lose weight after expelling a flatus?

smitelliConsidering the chemical composition, mass, and pressure range of typical human flatulence, would a person gain or lose weight after passing gas?

7:47 PM
This question probably can't be answered without knowing the composition, etc., of said flatulence. Does such data exist? — David White 20 mins ago

wtf
how would you gain

Asking the real questions.

am I retarded

@0celo7 Because science

@0celo7 If it's helium, you could get "heavier" after "expelling" it.

7:48 PM
@ACuriousMind can you watch youtube.com/watch?v=AoTUMc07eok

And apparently I deleted my Picard bookmark?
(but also found it online too)

@ACuriousMind I see...

@0celo7 Surprisingly, yes

It's a Dutch artist
That's a perfect example of "they were on drugs" when filming

Nope, just hidden

7:50 PM
> Any task that exceeds 90 minutes should be broken into smaller components with 15 minute breaks in between.
You're telling me I should take breaks when doing RPG grinds?

If you're doing a speedrun, you aren't allowed breaks unless there's an FMV

FMV
Full Metal Vehicle (crashing through the window)

cutscene?

7:54 PM
Yes, that's what FMV means
Full Motion Video

is that supposed to be 5 fps
also why is that famous, cf. the description

@0celo7 As with the original, it should be 30 fps

does that look 30 fps to you?

Yes

tfw the only truly smooth thing you've seen is vanilla Morrowind @ 120 fps
120 is melted butter on wet ice

7:57 PM
I'm pretty sure I played Morrowing at 40 fps

I get 40 in the jungle area with my flora mod
60 everywhere else

Is there some way to find things like conduction electron density for metals?
it seems like something that should be very common knowledge but I can't find it

Finding material properties is very annoying, I remember hunting for some heat capacity values

Every damn time I have to do it I'm surprised by how hard they are to find
electron densities, work functions, electron affinities, mobilities

@ACuriousMind not having the CRC tables within arm's reach at all times

Q: Books of dynamo theory

user162485I wanted recommendations of dynamo theory pdfs to make a report about magnetic fields of planets and stars with all the math behind it, like vector calculus, Lagrange functions, partial differential equations, and also to know what other requisites does it need.

Ahh, that brings me back. I had no clue what a dynamo was when I moved to Germany. I got strange looks in class once when I asked "why not use batteries".

8:26 PM
@ChrisWhite been busy lately? haven't seen you around much

user54412
@0celo7 Traveling, fixing my computer, playing PoE, and even doing research here and there.

freaking PoE
It has taken two good men from us already

@0celo7 I'm a man? I thought I am Alicia Keys?

Huh? We were having a physics conversation, some 16-year-old "moderator" suspended me for an hour for responding in kind, and since then the chatroom has descended back to the usual into trivia and trash that brings physics into disrepute. Well, at least there's no talk of murdering people today, that's a blessed relief. Anybody want to talk physics? No? Hello? Anybody?

@ACuriousMind don't be ridiculous

8:32 PM
Who am I?

@JohnDuffield Contrary to popular belief, physicists don't always talk only about physics.

oh yeah, I found someone to kill in Oblivion because they glitch out and walk off into the distance, but the unofficial Oblivion patch fixes that :/
I have to find some other poor soul to satisfy the dark brotherhood

Uh oh, here's comes the murder again

@0celo7 Doesn't the killing have to be with a knife or sword, and not a ranged weapon?

@JohnDuffield yeah thanks for reminding me buddy :D
@KyleKanos yeah, maybe
but the person walks far enough away that the guards won't come running
well not anymore, the patch fixed her pathfinding

user54412
8:34 PM
@ACuriousMind Do you use an item filter? I'm finally getting around to writing one, but I'm getting distracted by learning vim's sub-replace-expression capabilities to generate it.

> Note that you cannot just personally see to an NPC's death; you must actually murder them in accordance with the game's crime engine. For example, if you have a poison or enchantment that does damage over time, and it's the poison or enchantment, not the initial attack, that does the final point of health damage, you will not trigger the questline.

@KyleKanos I was planning to use my sward

So you might be able to do it with a B&A or magick
Here's a list of NPCs that you can kill: uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Dark_Brotherhood#Joining

@ChrisWhite writing one? You CS nerds are crazy

@ChrisWhite No, so far, I've relied on the power of my eyes
Although I'm sure I've missed some chromes through that.

8:37 PM
@KyleKanos thanks
right now my Oblivion strategy is to walk to every city and start as many quests as I can
Currently walking to Kvatch

@ChrisWhite: What do you intend to filter for, anyway? Anthing special the already available ones don't do satisfactory for you, or do you just want to have it written yourself?

user54412
Just write it myself. Also, I want mine to be pretty basic -- just outline some good things, without adding 57 new colors to train my brain on.

Oh boy, death, killing, and sward.

Soo...highlight chrome sockets, six sockets, and good items to chance, besides rares and uniques?

user54412
8:46 PM
@ACuriousMind Also things where ItemLevel is not much higher than DropLevel -- good for lower levels. The problem is I'm pretty sure this has to be done with ~80 statements, since one can only compare variables to literals rather than variables to variables.

@ChrisWhite Ah, I see.

From the facepalm archives

Q: What are harmonics?

Doeser What are harmonics? From what I read, harmonics simply refer to the frequency of a string vibration or the air vibration inside the tube of a flute, ONLY. My book didn't list any other source of harmonics. So I presume it can only be produced by either guitar string or flute. What intrigue...

@EmilioPisanty wat

That's what it says there

8:50 PM
@Slereah Will you post this every time someone says "sword"? :D

@ACuriousMind it's sward god dammit

Especially when it is misspelt

w not silent

user54412
If he closed his mouth, he'd be a closed-closed tube and his fundamental would go up an octave.

8:52 PM
@0celo7 Aha, now I know who's not done his review duty lately. Tsk. ;)

@ACuriousMind not me, I mean I'm not the one that, uh, crap

user54412
Actually a pretty good MSPaint diagram.

31 is a lot

I love 122...'s notation!
@ChrisWhite stole my close on that one
