10:00 PM
So there's a huge rock at my school that you're allowed to spray anything non-offensive on.
Any ideas?
$$\int \delta(x)\,\mathrm{d}x=1$$
@ACuriousMind just to piss off all the analysis students :P

Write PI IS EXACTLY 3

$\pi:=3$

Stick a sword in it and call it Excalibur and yourself King Arthur.

$$\mathrm{e}^x=1+x$$

Well, sure, for $x=0$.
In a book, the author talked about how the writer of a testbook in the 1800s wrote that $1+0=0$. But the author of the book used an exclamation mark at the end, so it was still right: $$1+0=0!$$

10:07 PM
Ancient people didn't really give two shits about correct formulas, really
pi was 3 through most of the bronze age
3 + 1/8, at some point, also

@Slereah 1800s is ancient?

@HDE226868 yes

Oh, you meant the earlier equation.

Some indian formula for a circle's area was (d - d/9)²
It gives a pretty good approximation of pi

What do you mean "how does it know"? Are you asking why things obey the laws of physics? (That'd be essentially because the laws of physics were obtained by observing how thinks behave) — ACuriousMind 41 secs ago
@ACuriousMind Silly German, the ball knows.
The college is talking about social media sites I've never heard of...

10:10 PM
@0celo7 I really don't see how the "dine&dash dilemma" is contributing to that :D

@ACuriousMind IDK, they said it was to show how easy it is to become a bystander.
My answer would be "fuck Alex because he's a piece of shit thief".
> Unlike your previous academic experience, at UT you are viewed as an adult
BUT I'M NOT

@0celo7 Wait, didn't they bar you from another thing because you weren't 18?

@Slereah proof?
@ACuriousMind exactly
@ACuriousMind Three edits?

Can someone explain how an MRI works?

Good to see your future alma mater has consistent policies, then ;)

10:13 PM
I am a bit confused what the oscilatting magnetic field does

@StanShunpike magnets

@0celo7 Yeah, that one was bad.

Well (d - d/9)² = (2r - 2r/9)² = 4r²(1 - 1/9) = 64/9 r²

@ACuriousMind I can't even see what you changed :/

Like I know maxwells equation

10:13 PM
Hm
Did I fuck up a thing

"anothing thing"

@0celo7 "anothing thing" -> "another thing thing" -> "another thing"

@ACuriousMind yeah lol

Oh right
I forgot the square
4r²(1 - 1/9)² so pi ~ 256 / 81

@Slereah And 4*8 is 32, not 64

10:15 PM
Which is 3.16

showing an approximation is consistent is not the same as a derivation

Well as said
Back then they didn't care

I guess I wanted a derivation

I'm not sure there is a derivation
It might be ad hoc

@ACuriousMind some algebraic geometry going on right there

10:17 PM
Ancient math is pretty painful to read
They had no symbols

@0celo7 It follows directly from the sheaf axioms.

@Slereah modern math is also painful

So they just wrote down everything
In painful details

@ACuriousMind can those be derived from the god particle theorem?

@0celo7 Only with supersymmetry.

10:18 PM
> One potential emergency that requires individual decision-making is an active shooter on campus. While this is statistically highly unlikely
Why bring that up?

Run away screaming

huh

user54412
@StanShunpike There is a constant magnetic field that induces a splitting in the nuclear energy levels. The oscillating EM field is used to detect the splitting. If the frequency (usually radio) of the oscillation matches the energy/frequency of the splitting, there will be resonant absorption.

tip

I can take a class on nuclear imaging.
oh joy, tornado warnings
@ACuriousMind Do Germans know what tornados are?

10:21 PM
I've been to Germany, they have plenty of tornados

@0celo7 Yes, from American movies ;) We also know some strong storms here, though, and call a storm Orkan.

^German tornadoes

@Slereah I never saw one.
@ACuriousMind I know what that is, but maybe there are tornados...somewhere?

No, the typical tornado does not occur here.

So delicious
So deadly

10:22 PM
GDI stop reminding me
I want a Döner so bad
December! Then I will have one!

I had a Yufka Döner yesterday, it was delicious.

GDI? Are you a 1950's dad
Golly willicker!
Gadzooks!

@ACuriousMind Yeah but you can't listen to good music in the 3rd world
How is GDI 1950s?

Dag nab it!
Well it was more "geedee"
Sakes alive!

> Four out of five campus-related deaths happen off-campus.

10:24 PM
@0celo7 I'll take Döner over music every day.

God damn it

Great caesars ghost!

@ACuriousMind grr I hate you

@HDE 226868 : I've put in a complaint about your unfair inadequate immature moderation of this chatroom. You are not competent to fill the role, and as a result this chatroom is bringing both physics and stack exchange into disrepute.

Oh shit, we're too rowdy!

10:25 PM
By jove, what a disgrace!

...have you ever been to the other chat rooms on the SE network?

Are my cheeks ever red

@Slereah This guy is hilarious

I have so much egg on my face you could slap me with a frying pan and call it an omlet

@Richard Never seen you here before, hi!

10:26 PM
He is.

Oh, it looks it is time for some vampire slaying. Hey @Richard :)

@0celo7 - Hi

@ACuriousMind say what

@0celo7 You have no clue why I said that, have you? :D

@ACuriousMind none

10:28 PM
@ACuriousMind - Because of the buffy avatar :-)
I got the joke

I get it now

@JohnDuffield I suspended you for one hour - the minimum - because you had been consistently rude to a number of users over the past three days. I let it slide when you called me immature yesterday and attacked me, but when, a day later (today), you attacked another user, I took action.
Who did you complain to?
I wasn't aware there was a Complaints Department. You can go over my head and complain to a Community Manager if you want, though.

holy crap this is a full on psychopath test

@0celo7 Did you have to google what Buffy is?

@ACuriousMind Of course not.
I just didn't notice the avatar at first.

10:31 PM
@0celo7 - Unless you're a fire warden and a trained evac escort, your main duty in a fire is to escape and raise the alarm

Can I use the wheelchair person as a ladder to escape the fire

@ChrisWhite thank you!

@Slereah my thoughts exactly

@0celo7 Phew, I thought the youth today was entirely hopeless ;)

@Richard So A?

10:32 PM
@0celo7 - Yes, A

@HDE 226868 : I haven't been consistently rude. I've been consistently abused by a a bunch of cackling anonymous trolls who talk gleefully about murder and porn and campus killing. Oh and here we go, now I'm being called a full-on psychopath. Don't you worry about who I've complained to.

Excluding sleepers, The most common way for firefighters to die is rescuing people who could have escaped, but didn't

user54412
I'm pretty sure all "the only thing that matters is getting out" advice was developed by heroism-seeking rescue people who like to think of everyone else as incompetant.

> This is a valid choice but as a responsible member of the community you should assist people with mobility issues to evacuate if danger does not seem immediately life threatening.

@JohnDuffield He was referring to the questions, not you.

10:34 PM
> murder and porn and campus killing

@HDE226868 Oh, I'd love to hear Shog9's take on this.

@HDE226868 Is that why @Richard is here?

@ACuriousMind I almost suggested that he should be the Complaints Department.

@0celo7 - I'm just watching this train-wreck unfolding

He has come into our den of iniquity

10:35 PM
Yes, and I'm watching you.

@Richard I don't know of any porn

I brought my big hammer

Who posted porn? Is it any good?

10:36 PM
this chat is insane

Oh, and I'm not the only one who's watching you.

@JohnDuffield lol
my cat is watching me

:3

little perv

::sneaks into shadows and watches the room carefully::
2

10:37 PM
@0celo7 - Meow

@ACuriousMind I was kidding, don't make this weird
@Richard Ask @ACuriousMind, my cat doesn't meow
It's more of a squeak

I thought you only wanted to name your second cat after me?

@Slereah wth is this

it is the zillyhoo

@ACuriousMind that was a joke, you made it weird

10:38 PM
@ACuriousMind Child, not cat!

@0celo7 Ah yes, I remember that. Whoever taught him to meow failed hilariously
@HDE226868 Ah, right. If it's a girl, name it Alicia instead, will you, @0celo7?

I do like that name
Although I was thinking Elizabeth
I'm probably planning too far ahead with that

I can't even name my RPG characters well, I should never name a child. (My players have told me this a few times! :D)

I'm not that bad
I just use names from chars in other non-RPG games
My best idea was to name my Redguard in Oblivion Nazir

And now for something completely different:
30
Q: Is education in Europe really this cheap?

Jack BauerSounds like a Skeptics SE question but hopefully on topic here. 300 usd or 200 euros tuition a year? That is 1/10 the tuition in the third world university where I took my bachelor's and master's. Is it really true that some first world universities charge that much to non-scholars? Why? I hear...

Is that even a proper academia.SE question?

10:45 PM
I don't see why not

who cares
at least the Community Manager has not banned us all
means that porn was either a) not porn b) he's watching it right now

A CM came in?

Nope

is @Richard not one

Dammit, nope

10:47 PM
oh for Sci-Fi

@0celo7 Richard's a mod, like me. Community Managers are like Shog9 and Robert Cartaino.

@ACuriousMind dammit?

@0celo7 - Richard is a Diamond mod

@0celo7 Did you know that you can't type the exact same thing twice in a row?

Sometimes he refers to himself in the third person

10:48 PM
@ACuriousMind I did

So I added "dammit" to get my "nope" through

@ACuriousMind I see

That said, Richard has a cool mod hammer.

I'm not clever enough to think of that
so why did @Richard decide to join us?
you want to learn about topology, porn, murder or quantum nonsense?

@0celo7 Not here the first time, btw:
Feb 24 at 16:09, by Richard
@Danu - That actually puts my first question on the front foot. Can I use gravity (for example firing smaller black holes) to tear a black hole into pieces that are too small to create a black hole?
(Yes, my memory for this chat transcript almost rivals my webcomic memory)

10:50 PM
@ACuriousMind No because of the black hole bifurcation theorem. You cannot make more black holes.
@ACuriousMind And my memory of HE theorems rivals your webcomic memory.
I wish that were true :(

I wish you would call them HIS theorems :(

@ACuriousMind - I still don't see why I can't tear black holes into pieces.

90% of confusions in that book result from me forgetting a theorem
@ACuriousMind ha

pew pew

@Richard Do you want the technical reason?

10:52 PM
Hm
Actually
I wonder
Black holes can fuse

@Richard cf. Wald theorem 12.2.1

If you took the time reversed metric
What would it look like

@0celo7 - I seem to recall the last time I was here, the resolution was "you can't, nor can you understand the maths that proves it"

No because the black hole would be a white hole, I think.

true

10:53 PM
@Richard We can teach you.

Time reversed black holes are white holes indeed

@Richard Well, I'm not the expert on that. Black holes are weird, I stick to my quanta :)

user54412
I feel there's probably a really intuitive reason black holes can't be split. I'll give it some thought.

You can describe black holes with quantas
If you want an intuitive reason, you can't really split a singularity

@Slereah So you solved quantum gravity?

10:54 PM
@Richard that's the proof in Wald.

Very helpful.

@ACuriousMind Isn't all the topology beautiful?

@ACuriousMind
Carlip's book has a 2+1D black hole solution

Hawking really made GR into a complicated topological problem.

I've got a big black hole sat in the middle of space minding its own business

10:56 PM
@0celo7 I must say, the absence of indices pleases me

I've got a gun that fires small black holes at speed

neat

@Richard : you can understand it if you look at the gravastar, which features "a void in the fabric of space and time". IMHO a gravastar isn't a correct description for a black hole, but IMHO it does give provide the right intuition: you can't tear a hole in half.

You don't really have a lot of indices in topology

I use my gun to fire black holes past the main black hole, what happens?

10:57 PM
(except when you have a bunch of open sets)
@ri

Can I elongate it?

@Richard : Depends
Depends where they fly by
Either they will act like just any gravitational bodies
Or they will fuse
It's complicated and there's no analytical solution, unfortunately

@JohnDuffield "These limits, such as discrete length and time quanta (chronon), were not known to exist when black holes were originally theorized" - These limits are still not known to exist, the significance of the Planck units is vastly overstated in almost all cases.
Oh god, that Wiki article is horrible

I'm planning to fire a near-continuous stream of them

10:59 PM
" imposes a universal "smallest size" that is known to exist according to well-accepted quantum theory"...no, just no.
The spectrum of the position operator is continuous in all usual quantum theories.
