@0celo7 I don't know if there is a policy on that, but I suspect that repeated post that kind of material would be frowned on.
This is a public space and is associated with Stack Exchange. I doubt they want a reputation for adult content.
On the other hand, I personally figure that adult conversation sometimes includes adult topics. Sophisticated people can manage that gracefully.

@dmckee I chose not to post it.
It was...a failed mod that resulted in a hilarious NSFW.

@danu: The ending to this game might make you cringe :/

Q: How do you answer "Oh, you're a professor? What do you teach?"

Dnuorg SpuI suspect anybody who's a professor knows this story: you meet someone new in a social setting and it comes up that you're a professor. The inevitable next question is, "oh, what do you teach?" It's a perfectly reasonable question, and one simple answer is: well, tell them what you teach! But ...

@ACuriousMind Are you alive?
@ACuriousMind Realize that I will have a roommate in a few weeks who might not fancy chickens, jugs and donkeys flying over my screen.

@0celo7 By some definitions.

I think only the important definitions matter

Who here is really good at modding female armor meshes in Skyrim?

@KyleKanos Ah, but how do I tell the important ones from the unimportant ones?

how the heck am I supposed to do this

2:22 AM
@ACuriousMind The definitions by which you are considered alive are probably the important ones

get a picture and sit here for hours trying to shape...things?
I'm not an otaku
and the fat people mod is breaking the game, great

@KyleKanos Good thinking there

@ACuriousMind So is vampirism a poor definition

Pfft, it's still dark outside, my schedule isn't completely wrecked yet.

@ACuriousMind Are you at least playing PoE

2:40 AM
I'm pretty sure I've asked before, but is PoE Path of Exile?

Hey guys, does this question have an answer?

@KyleKanos I also play Pillars of Eternity, but in this case it is Path of Exile

Is there such a thing as a generic formula for decay widths?

Never saw one, but then again, never saw much about decay widths at all

@ACuriousMind That's what I thought. TY

2:54 AM
@ACuriousMind wth is a .nif file

@0celo7 Uh...something that has to do with the models of the objects, but I'm not sure.

I need to edit the .nif for the body mod to show under clothes...but I can't find the .nif for anything

Ah, they're probably trapped in the .bsa files :D

say what
the Bethesda files?

The .bsa files are archives like .zip. You probably can't find a .nif because the .nifs are all inside .bsas

2:58 AM
so how the hell do I do this then
:/
I'm gonna break Skyrim
for real this time

I faintly recall there being "bsa unpackers" or something like that

Writing tips request. Not sure that I've seen one of those before
And we may have sunk to a new low
I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is about dolphin anatomy & physiology and not physics. — Kyle Kanos 16 secs ago

@KyleKanos I've read that question thrice now...and I'm still not sure what it is asking for.

I don't know what create 3-D sound structures means
But it's definitely asking if dolphins can do whatever that is
Which means it's not about physics

3:28 AM
No love for dolphins in physics :(

Actually, I enjoy dolphins
Partly because my son enjoys them

@KyleKanos He's probably noodling around the idea of spoofing returns that would come from arbitrary targets. Which you ought to be able to do with a phased array.
But that just makes it an engineering question. A really cool engineering question.

@dmckee I think he actually means seeing the 3D waveform of the sound wave

@DanielSank: I know you like octopi and goats. How do you feel about dolphins?

@KyleKanos Well, that acoustic holography. For which you need a phased array.

3:30 AM
Hmm. Well it's still about whether dolphins can do that or not

The things are just stupid versatile and useful, in principle.

Oh, look, the sun is rising. There goes my sleep schedule.

In any case, I'm not defending it the question because it seems really poorly researched and very pop-sci to me.

@KyleKanos This isn't a new low, by the way. Have you forgotten this?
Or this?

@ACuriousMind They're cool.

3:35 AM
@ACuriousMind I'm discounting them because it fits my immediate needs

@KyleKanos How unscientific

No, that's very scientific. That's how we got Crania Americana
Another Danu?

It's just a Dutch first name, so not that surprising

I'm 'Murrican. I don't see no ferner's names often

2 hours later…
5:51 AM
@ACuriousMind @KyleKanos No, it really is surprising. I'm fairly certain that there are fewer than 5 Danu's in the country.
@KyleKanos hahaha that chess game... great :P
I'd find it more believable that this is just someone copying my name :P
I've only seen one other "Danu" in my life (online). It was a Dutch girl ^^

A: What was Feynman's "much better way of presenting the electrodynamics" -- which did **not** appear in the Feynman lectures?

Michael A. GottliebI spent a long time researching this question for Carver Mead (mentioned by Art Brown) in 2008, because we were both curious what Feynman meant. Carver thought Feynman's "better way of presenting electrodynamics" would be something along the lines of his own "Collective Electrodynamics," but that...

This is so friggin' awesome

is it
Now I have to decypher Feynman's handwriting!

You know what that means
I have to answer that post on the TARDIS spacetime instead of Duffield

Q: Has any new physics problem been solved as a result of discussion on Physics StackExchange?

OttoEvery now and then, there are very interesting science questions being posted on the Physics StackExchange. Some of these questions concern very up-to-date research. Does anyone know if any publication has resulted from a post on Physics StackExchange?

8:18 AM
@dmckee : I want to complain about serial downvoting. We've got a naysayer trolls here orchestrating it, see the conversation at 8:40pm last night chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/23073022#23073022 and check my recent rep. Also see this answer physics.stackexchange.com/questions/195297/… where I received 6 downvotres despite the solid references to Einstein, Shapiro, Baez, Wright, Magueijo & Moffat.

Those scoundrels!

@JohnDuffield I hope he is not Steven Moffat because I hate him ever since he f*cked up DW and made it a kid's show as it was intended in 1963!

@dmckee : not only that, but they're going round closing down questions and pissing off new contributors then gloating about it, see the Alex example at 5:12pm yesterday. And maybe it's not just new contributors, I can see some names here who have obviously voted with their feet.
@gonenc : no, John Moffat. And I'm afraid Dr Who always was a fairy tale for kids. It's ludicrous anyway. The excitement builds toward the end of an episode because the Doctor has only got ten minutes to save the planet. But he's got a time machine. Duh! I even thought that when I was a kid.

8:38 AM
@JohnDuffield ^ exactly someone would say, who hasn't watched an episode of DW and nevertheless have a "solid" opinion about how stuff works in that universe

I have only seen 60's Doctor Who and it is kind of a C grade science fiction show
People tell me I should watch the modern series and all, but I kinda want to go through series in chronological order
And getting past the first one is hard

@Slereah but you should really watch the new series first if you want to like the series cause 60's series is made with 60's tech so even I haven't watched it
and don't plan to cause nobody aint got no time for that

It's especially hard when you get to the reconstructed episodes
Because then it turns into a radio drama

@Slereah watch the new series, think of it this way the series had a break for lots of lots of years, you normally don't expect a continuity ;)

Hell I even watched Star Trek the Animated series!

8:48 AM
hence it is perfectly ok to start watching from the ninth doctor

And it has Spock summoning the devil

@Slereah well then watch the new series and if you like return to the old ones watching animated series is something ;) :D

It might have been a joke because apparently there was a whole private joke in the Star Trek people about how Spock looked like the devil
According to a letter from a viewer
and that was why evil Spock had a devil beard

though I havent watched any Star Trek

It is of varying quality
Though original Star Trek is also fine
TNG is probably where the best episodes are, though
Except for Star Trek movies, where they are mostly trash
Star Trek 4 and 6 are probably the best movies of the series
(2 is overrated, that's right I said it)

9:00 AM
@Slereah btw it is hard to follow whom you are talking to in chat cause you generally don't use the reply button, it'd better if you do so ;) (just a friendly reminder)

Heyo

Hey

@Danu hey danu how are you doing?

Well who else would I answer to

@JohnDuffield Lol, I didn't vote on your stuff either today or yesterday...
@gonenc Good

9:01 AM
@Slereah it gets really complicated as you are reading the history :D

That is good then
Duffield will not know of our sinister plot

@Slereah eg. to whom was that intended? :D

I guess that conspiracy theories are always part of things
@gonenc But who said we intended chat to be clear to later observers?

@Danu no one I'm just saying it'd be nicer :D

Duffield answered one of my answer

9:04 AM
@Danu reading the discussion from yesterday is a pain :D

Can I downvote a comment

@gonenc I actually find it quite easy.

Oh no, he is here
Our evil plot!

(maybe it comes with practice ;), I've been doing this for a while...)
ok @slereah this is kind of getting ridiculous. Let's not be like some kind of bullies.

@Danu ^indeed

9:06 AM
Aw

In all seriousness @JohnDuffield I don't think there is any orchestrated downvoting effort against you.
Of course, your rather high visibility (recently) does increase the number of times people from this chat room (i.e. the "hard core") will look at your posts. Those contain controversial (at best) material sometimes, and this may explain the downvoting.

I answer a lot of questions pertaining to closed timelike curves so I end up seeing him a lot :p

@gonenc : Dr Who is woo. It's trash science fiction for kids and numpties. Films like Déjà Vu and Time Lapse are science fiction too, but they aren't for kids and numpties, they don't treat the audience like idiots. @Slereah : you will absolutely love the new series of Dr Who.

Oh snap.

How do I downvote stuff in chat??
I really need to downvote something in chat!

9:18 AM
Alas you cannot!

@Slereah argh... :D
@JohnDuffield btw a serious question, why do you like bashing stuff that you don't like? I mean it is utterly repulsive and not in any way chatty as you should expect in a chat room. You gain nothing by doing so except the fact that people star to ignore you because of that kind of behaviour.
@JohnDuffield exactly what I'm talking about

@JohnDuffield Sure, I think you're a crackpot. But that doesn't mean I'm going around telling people to downvote your posts.
Also, cursing like that isn't going to get your very far.

@Danu I go with ignoring him in this chat room for good because I don't want that kind of negativity in my life.
he can swear all he wants now...

9:39 AM
@JohnDuffield rofl
and my f key is stuck again

Hey Ocelot

drama?

@0celo7 don't feed the troll I'd say

Drama indeed.

the hard truth faced when people in my age are acting in major TV series

9:45 AM
Ironically, I enjoy Dr. Who - but only for entertainment

Well children also act in major TV series

@gonenc : I'm just kicking back. If you can't take it, don't dish it, troll. @Danu: start paying attention to what Einstein said instead of dismissing it. Then you'll appreciate that the crackpot is the guy peddling time travel and other science fiction as science fact. Quantum gravity will crack the secret of time travel? LOL!

What else would you enjoy Dr Who for?

@gonenc the troll is hilarious

@Slereah I mean like GoT :D

9:46 AM
What else would you enjoy GoT for

@0celo7 : yes, gonenc the troll is hilarious.

If it's nudity you are easy to please

It is just weird that we were born in the same year and she probably has a house full of money ;D
@Slereah nudity is the least thing I enjoy in the show

The sex scenes in GoT are quite mediocre...

@0celo7 a troll has always been a troll and will continue to be so in the future...

9:48 AM
I even own a sonic screwdriver (a toy, obviously)

@santiago I don't have one but if I had one it wouldn't be a toy, obviously :P :D

Guys, stop it, it's a little childish. @gonenc @0celo7 Of course, you are a child, but that's besides the point ;)

@gonenc of course!
owning K-9 would be pretty cool

@Danu what is really childish? There is a person in the room, who says I'm right and you are wrong and swears because you don't like what he likes.
I'd definitely ignore such a person in real life
@santiago affirmative sir!

@gonenc and I look twice at statues of angels now... creepy bastards

9:51 AM
@gonenc Talking about John (while he's in the room) like were doing, to @0celo7. You guys are basically just trolling.

@santiago weeping angles were at first a very good idea and then moffat screwed it up too as always :/

@gonenc maybe the angels threatened him
and the Silence
oooh
Weeping Angels vs Silence

@Danu would you prefer when I talked from his back? besides there is nothing that remains unseen in the chat room. it is not like real world where what you say is lost it stays here forever
@santiago do you like the episodes written by moffat

i never actually pay attention who writes the episodes

@gonenc : Einstein's right. Now, you can dismiss Einstein if you like and warble on about time machines and other popscience trash. But if you do you can expect a response from me. Because this is a physics website. Not a science fiction website.

My liking of Dr. Who does not make me a crackpot popsci scientist

@santiago in the new series, the first 4 season are written by Russell T. Davis
after that moffat takes over

maybe Moffat is a Silence?

@santiago Have you watched the season finale this season?

nah
I am usually in the field performing experiments

9:58 AM
@santiago what is the last episode you've watched?

hmmmm That one with Nick Frost as Santa

I thought Dr. Who was awful. Just such terrible acting! I only watched like 2 episodes before I had to give it up.
Is it one of those youth sentiment things? ...that'd explain why I don't get it

@santiago you sir are way behind the schedule

nope, I just like it
@gonenc yup, indeed
I need more monsters

@Danu nah it is just you like it more as you watch it.

10:01 AM
Disclaimer: I don't believe any of the 'physics' on Dr. Who in case anyone has that delusional idea

have you watched the eccleson as the doctor or matt smith?
that'd make a huge difference

they're good

I just watched the first 2 episodes, IIRC

matt smith aint no good. Tennant is the one good doctor.

each to their own

10:03 AM
@Danu was it new series (colourful) or old series (black-white)?

I don't have a favourite doctor

@gonenc New

@JohnDuffield excuse me?

@JohnDuffield Please don't post insults like that again.

@Danu well then, people have different tastes :), you like apple, I like orange :D

10:05 AM
@JohnDuffield liking something that you do not like does not make another person an idiot - your views are not everyone else's views

@Danu : Oh holier than thou. You called me a crackpot remember? You're a hypocrite.

I suspect his parents were killed by time travellers
He seems vehemently opposed to the notion
Even in fiction!

@JohnDuffield so what right do you have to call me an 'idiot'? I have said nothing against you

@JohnDuffield You are free to flag my chat posts if you think they are offensive.

@Danu you see what I'm talking about?

10:08 AM
and @JohnDuffield I don't know you, so I won't be saying anything against you
anyway, bringing the attention away from the bit of unnecessary cattiness, @gonenc which is your favourite episode?

@Danu : you know your posts have been offensive. Don't pretend you were being "truthful" or trot out some other fatuous garbage. @Santiago : sorry I called you an idiot. I was responding in kind to some of the other comments, in a comment that was an attempt at humour. I'm not a fan of Dr Who myself, ever since I was a kid when I'd say But what's the hurry? He's got a time machine.

@santiago 4th season finale of course :D I really know it by heart :D

@gonenc I have to reacquaint myself with that

@JohnDuffield Again, you can flag them if you consider them seriously offensive. I'll stop replying to you now. This is not a pleasant conversation for any of us: Let's just stop it.

also lunch time

10:13 AM
good advice - let's move on

@santiago you know the one where davros steals the earth and donna becomes half timelord half human

@gonenc YES! Stolen Earth!!! absolute epic!

@santiago calling.... Doctor

@gonenc yes and Donna's grandpa with the paintball gun against the Daleks

god that was such a thrill... when you watch the finale of this season you'll know the difference between moffat and russell t. davies
I mean even the name of the doctor was such bs
@santiago that was a very clever idea imo

10:15 AM
@gonenc yup - and the great thing was they brought everyone together
Sarah Jane, Captain Jack Harkness, even Micky!

@santiago I wanna watch it again :D

same - oh man, that was a great episode

I think I'll seriously watch it again :D

when the Dr. goes to the Shadow Proclamation

@santiago the season finale of 1st (new series) season was also really good
basically the season finales of the first 4 season were really good :D

10:18 AM
@gonenc the Christmas Invasion?

@santiago nah rose looking into time vortex and doing funny stuff :D

aaaaah yes!!!

@santiago making jack immortal etc. :D

@gonenc yes, he becomes a 'moment in time'
Capt Jack vs the Weeping Angels
now, that would be...odd

@santiago oh oh oh.. the runaway bride was also really good

10:21 AM
yes!

@santiago I really miss the pre-moffat era :(

I have to admit the Rings of Akhetan I enjoyed

@Danu : what's not pleasant is the gloating about closing down questions, the malicious downvoting of good answers and the buddy-buddy upvoting of poor answers. Which presumably is why I see names I know who have voted with their feet.

@santiago which one was that
but at least it wasn't written by moffat...

@gonenc oh it has been a while, but the choir of aliens were singing "sleep now"
@JohnDuffield voting is anonymous, so is impossible to know 100% who voted in what way

10:25 AM
@santiago was that the episode where the doctor uses this screw driver as a magic wand?

hmmm i don't think so

@santiago I hope not :D the thing is I've lost all of the episodes ::intense crying:: so I have no way of telling atm :(

@Santiago : I imagine some users can see exactly who's voted for what.

@JohnDuffield actually, not even mods can see voting - it is anonymous
@gonenc eeek!! you'll have to rebuild!

@santiago sadly... maybe I'll buy a box type of thing with all 8 seasons
if I have the money sometime in the future

10:31 AM
@gonenc here is the spiel about Rings of Akhaten tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Rings_of_Akhaten_(TV_story)

@santiago I vaguely remember what it was but not the details sadly...

it has an epic doctor rant

@Santiago : the stack exchange developers have access to the voting data.

@JohnDuffield more than likely, but for only majorly problems - an automated script will pick up any serial down (and up) voting... but the developers have far more important things to do

@santiago but the leaf scene was bs

10:38 AM
@gonenc yup, I agree

@santiago which was btw as I've read it just now Moffat's idea

@gonenc lol - are we surprised

@santiago seriously if you have time watch the last season, which has a lot of mediocre quality episodes.
but the finale is the biggest bs I've ever seen

I will have to do that

I don't wanna give spoilers (<- Hello Sweetie...) but it was a real bs

@santiago flag it without any doubt as utterly off-topic :D

Maybe it should be redirected to like
The Academia Stack Exchange?

@Slereah indeed it should but I cannot flag it for migration because there are only two options for migration and they are maths se and meta physics

Seems somewhat limited
There should also be an option for the science history SE
and astronomy, maybe?

anyways, i better go to bed

10:49 AM
night

awesome chat about Dr. Who @gonenc!

@Slereah the problem is that you cannot know for sure that the question is on topic there

@Slereah goodnight!

@santiago good night and indeed it was :)

Sure but the same with math questions

10:50 AM
@Slereah which is why it is so restrictive

Q: Additional choices for migration

Waffle's Crazy Peanut Related: Can we get a migration path opened to math.SE? When we close or flag a question as off-topic, we have an option called belongs to meta.physics.SE. We're also receiving questions that belong to Math.SE or Electronics.SE most of the time. So, it'd be easy for migration if there is a c...
