Oh my hat!!
Why is there no hat here, disappointed
@hwlau because this chat isn't actually part of Physics.SE.
But hat is not limited only to physics
it is cross all stackexchange.
@hwlau Yeah good question.
01:18
YAY..!!! HATZZZZ...
And, today's my 500th consecutive :P
@CrazyBuddy 500th consecutive what?
@CrazyBuddy 500!! Are you crazy?
You have nothing else to do?
@hwlau Nah, I have 8 compulsory subjects (Electives come around 7th semester) :/
Hey... Visiting each day, reading & voting <-- that's all :D
I missed "fanatic" on the 97th day due to international travel.
hehe :D
@BrandonEnright International travel?
01:21
It can be extremely hard to visit the site in the middle of 24+ hours of travel. I think the only times I've missed the site have been due to travel.
ah...
From around 2012 April (I joined SE around August), I've never lost my internet connectivity (not even once) -- that explains my "visiting each day" part :D
Is the internet at Indian that good?
There are even few worldwide Internet disruption
"lost" <-- like for a few days :D
We have terrible power shutdowns, let alone internet disruption :P
For this recent US holiday (Thanksgiving) I was visiting family in Malibu California. They didn't have an Internet connection or cell phone service at their house. I had to hike a few miles up to the top of of the mountain they live on to get cell service so that I could visit the site.
I'm sure that darn "fanatic" badge has made lots of people do similar stuff.
hehe, yeah :D
01:27
@BrandonEnright WHat you do is really desire for the word "fanatic"
@hwlau Yeah you see, the thing is, I am a fanatic, I want that badge to prove it to the rest of the world :-p
@BrandonEnright But you did get the copy editor badge, which mean you are hardworking
@hwlau I have one :P (And, I'm in pursuit of the Marshal) :D
@hwlau I feel bad that poor QMechanic having to edit all of the terrible questions.
It's clear the majority of question askers are non-native English speakers so there is often a lot of work to do.
Yup, but it means that it is a worldwide website :)
01:33
@BrandonEnright Yeah, especially Indians :D
@hwlau Yeah but it's more than that. It means a lot of the world has integrated physics into the core education. In the US, it's possible for most students to never take a physics class ever, all the way through to a PhD
@BrandonEnright never? I guess they have at least taking one. No?
@hwlau Pretty much no elementary school student (ages 5-12 or so) has to take any sort of "physics-like class". Almost all "middle schools" (ages 13-14) require any sort of physics class. They generally just have generic "science" (or biology) classes and barely cover physics. Most high schools make physics and elective and the bulk of students not planning on going to college for Engineering don't take it.
And then when it comes to college (universities), most colleges don't require physics specifically for non-Enginering, non-Science majors. It's entirely reasonable (probably even common) for people studying biology or humanities or non-engineering fields to have never taken a physics course in their life.
I see. I have even seen people here does even know what physics is, but they know astronomy...
@hwlau For me, astronomy was covered in my 7th grade year "science" class. Physics wasn't.
01:42
What a surprise! Any reasons behind that?
@hwlau At least when I was a kid (I'm 29, almost 30 now), science and math weren't really emphasized as much. Even when science was covered, it was mostly biology and geology and astronomy.
I suppose chemistry is the same. I've only taken one chemistry class in my life (in 10th grade) and that's only because I chose to take it. I'm pretty sure most people never take a chemistry class.
@hwlau While placing it, you have the authority to change its position w.r.t your gravatar :P
Woah... @hwlau You deleted the message -_-
@CrazyBuddy Because I figured it out already
That's why the reply shifted to the next :D
@CrazyBuddy That's okay Crazy Buddy, we all know you're a bit senile and your non-sequitur just proves it :-p
01:46
@BrandonEnright What do you mean?
@hwlau His response to you was linked to my message instead of yours (because you deleted yours). The response didn't make sense in relation to my message, making his response a non-sequitur.
Oh, I see. He also edit it soon, so I dont get what you are saying
@BrandonEnright What? Hey, I blame the chat engine..!!! I didn't do that :D
@BrandonEnright No, my response was to his... It had his msg's ID - but since it was deleted, it jumped to yours... Got it? :D
To be honest, while typing in the laptop, my hand accidentally shook the milk glass, which spilled allover the laptop :P
And, I woke up so early because my college starts today... Vacation ended yesterday :D
@BrandonEnright Astronomy? You have a class like that?
@BrandonEnright I took Chem, Bio, Phys, & Comp Sci in 3 years at HS. I was the only one who did all of those in my class, most took just Chem & Bio. No astronomy. Might've helped me out now, seeing how I am an astrophysicist.
02:02
Anyways, c'yall later -- gtg to college :)
But it's 9 pm...
It's 7:30 AM here :)
It is 7pm here :)
You guys need to get your clocks fixed....
:D
02:21
How come my hat doesn't show up here? I got a cool Menorah.
02:31
Hat doesn't rescale, so they do let us wear them here :(
@hwlau Hmm. Whoever "they" is needs to get their act together.

Wish Pittsburgh would just let AJ Green score a TD
Also: Whyyyyyy

I was thinking I'd need a different picture for hats, but my current combination works perfectly :)
06:46
@ChrisWhite Chris, that snorkel mask works great for your avatar. I think this may be the first I've looked at your profile in a while. I didn't realize you're so young :-)

2 hours later…
09:00
@ChrisWhite You're not gonna get a gravatar forever. At least, you can select a cool hat (before winterbash ends), take a snap and wear it as your gravatar :P
@ManishEarth: BTW, What happened to Winterbash page?
@CrazyBuddy winterbash2013.stackexchange.com
Duh, the old page redirected to some old SE introduction to winterbash

Hi everyone, as a project for a course I'm set to create an artificial neural network which will classify human voices according to the gender of the speaker. For this I'll need a fairly large database of men's and women's voices, in particular of them all uttering the same specific vowel. Does anyone know if such a database is freely available online somewhere? Or will I need to record my own?
@Wouter Record your own probably.
12:00
Yay! I'm topping the network wide hat leaderboard! :D
@ManishEarth There's a leaderboard?
@ManishEarth interesting.....
will have to peruse some more
Well I gotta go make breakfast for the family. Will be on later
12:22
@ManishEarth: I heard you saying that you use latex to make PDFs for your studies. Right?
Are those what? formulas?
Because, I thought of making them too... This sem - just like I said, saw two species of professors (and, I'm very much convinced by their supervillain activities). Still 4 more to go -_-
One class was terrible. He brought a bunch of papers (probably carbon copies of a book) - he asks us to write down what he says. And he goes, goes & goes - for about 40 mins
I wrote (with my writing) for 6 pages... O_O
@ManishEarth: I haven't made them before. Are all programs the same?
Can I start with this one? latex-project.org
@CrazyBuddy I use TeXmaker, though there is one called kile
ah, man... that bug has come to me...
refresh, it was fixed three hours ago, but you may be running old js
12:36
Yeah, I just did -- gone ;-)
@ManishEarth Darn, I feared as much. Oh well, time to go put up some flyers I suppose. :)
@Wouter If you want there are some recordings of me saying vowels and consonants here.
@ManishEarth Cool, thanks. But if I can't find a database of many people uttering the same vowel, I'll probably want to indeed record my own where I can control the sound people are intending to make. Thanks again for your help though!

2 hours later…
14:25
@ManishEarth +1 For Kile!
@KyleKanos I've never used it, really sheepish grin
some friends use it
@ManishEarth They're basically the same thing, TexMaker & Kile. Only GUI differences.
Ah
@KyleKanos Which is easier to install on Windows?
No idea, I don't use Windows.
Which one is easier to operate? :P
14:35
@CrazyBuddy Like I said, they're basically the same. They both have spell-check, Latex hot-keys, auto-completion of Latex commands, quick view windows, etc.
Alright, I'll download Kyle too... :D
Now, beware everyone..!!! I'm a MARSHAL :P
@CrazyBuddy You can't download me ;)
ah,... didn't notice that :D
Ugh... grace period ended >_<
@BrandonEnright: I'm pursuing you..!!! :P
Holy crapola! 500 straight days!?
Yeah :D
To be honest, the first 3-4 months, I came here just because I wanted consecutives :D
Later (even now), I can't refrain myself from visiting here each day :)
14:46
I think I'm on like 85 straight. I really want that gold badge....
I almost got the one on SO and here at the same time, but somehow I missed day 70-something here but didn't on SO.
@KyleKanos Wait... Fanatic takes only 100 consecutives
That gold badge is for helpful flags :)
@CrazyBuddy Yes
I know.
Oh, fine
I think I had like 40 helpful badges. It'll be a while before I get that one. I was just running on the 500 days thing and mentioned my less than 100 days
Hah..!!! :D
15:09
@ManishEarth (Mr. Peanut) You beat me by 30 seconds (sigh) -- I was just going to say that (user survey) :D
15:45
Why (rather how) are some users wearing hats in their icon pics?
@ShaonaBose If you have hats, then it'll appear in your user page.
16:08
@KyleKanos Oo. Yeah I've got the Winter Bash page.
Hmm... This comment has been edited with my link
But, the flag has been declined o_O
@CrazyBuddy Weird. I have 46 flags: 45 helpful, 1 pending.
16:23
@KyleKanos Pending for.... (??)
how many hours?
No, a few minutes
If that
@KyleKanos Duh, then our mods are being lazy :P
@CrazyBuddy I refuse to comment. They might start declining my flags and ruin my perfect record
hehe :D
My flagging history has a variety of flags :D

1 hour later…
17:27
Could someone point me in the right direction of solving an equation like a^x+b^x+c=0
@Natanael Probably better suited for Math.StackExchange.com than the Physics chatroom

1 hour later…
18:47
Hah, I am Number 2
19:47
@CrazyBuddy Er...hm. The buttons we get for comment flags include "delete" and "dismiss" and I can't remember if there are others. Either I made a mistake pushing the buttons or there was no way to leave the comment and clear the flag.

Either way, I feel bad about it. Please accept my appologies.

20:31
Alright, now I can stop trying because I made it to #1
21:02
Huh I just noticed John Rennie barely votes. I was surprised that he only had one gold badge. He's an answer machine though!

Q: Editing and closing in the close queue

jinaweeWhen edit a question in the close queue, it automatically skips to the next question. So I have to open the question in a new tab to VTC. Is there any direct way to achive this? Or is there any particular reason why this cannot be done?

1 hour later…
22:10
@CrazyBuddy I'm impressed you got that badge. I don't think I'll be able to get the badge before I hit 10k unless I really focus on flagging everything including borderline stuff.

Q: Why are refrigerators 4 degrees and freezers -18 degrees?

dotancohenI assume that the refrigerator's temperature of 4 degrees has something to do with the fact that water is densest at that temperature. Does that inhibit microbe growth? But what about the freezer, what is special about -18 degrees? Is it a trade off of some type?

Is that on topic here? I wouldn't have thought so. Food for thought...

Q: Why are estimation questions off-topic?

levitopherA recent attempt on my part to re-open an estimation question has failed, so I thought it might be worthwhile to continue the discussion on meta. The original question: Estimate number of hairs on human head This was marked as off-topic since physicists should not care about the number of hairs...

@KyleKanos when editing question for tags, you should also take the opportunity to fix stuff in the question or remove "thanks" and such. It makes the question cleaner and it also gives you credit for the edit. Tag-only edits don't count as an "edit".
