@JohnRennie why, doesn't UK have cloudy skies? Well, there the climate is not tropical monsoon unlike India. Here, we're always (mostly) seeing clouds.

He's was being sarcastic about the weather.

I was :-)
The UK is not famous for its sunny weather :-)

OK. I see. :-)

[Philosophy]
On postmordernism
Actually, if you look closely on it, there really exists one hierarchical power structure in reality even in the absence of a society:
Reality itself and certain truths/falsehoods
They are those where if you even disagree 1% about them, you die because of the laws of physics, biology etc.

The lack of sunny days in the UK explains why only Mad dogs and english men go out in the midday sun :-)
Personally, I prefer rain.

5:18 AM
I suspect the rain is warm where you are. In the UK it's cold as well as wet!
Actually it doesn't rain all that much in the UK, or at least not in my part of the UK.

@skullpatrol I'm completely against rain if I'm outside, else it's OK. I got wet one day, had cold, and mother also has cold from me, it turned into cough, and she had to be admitted in the hospital last Wednesday. I literally fear rain now!

Although the weather looks lively today :-)

@JohnRennie Finding the Sunny weather prediction is like Where's Waldo

5:22 AM
Yeah, that's a lot of lightening @JohnRennie

Can you people view mathjax on chat rooms? I could never view it on mobile :-(

Yes.

What can I do about this issue? It's becoming irritating.

It doesn't work. I clicked on start mathjax, then returned, and same thing again.

5:37 AM
How are you installing it?
$e^{i\pi}+1=0$
$$\sum_{n=0}^\infty\binom{n}{k}x^n=\frac{x^k}{(1-x)^{k+1}}\tag{1}$$

Yes, copying that link given at the bottom of the page you linked.

$\aleph_{\omega}^{\sum_{i=1}\int_{\aleph_{2}f(x)dx}^{\beth_5}}$

Doesn't work. :-(

I have a feeling it doesn't work on mobile ...
I think I remember someone saying that. I've never tried using the site on mobile so I can't comment.

It works on mobile for me.

5:46 AM
Using the mobile version of the site or the desktop version?

Mobile version.

Hmm.

You must follow the instructions carefully to bookmark it @WrichikBasu

@WrichikBasu: do you have a render Mathjax link? If so try that. It does a one off redraw of the page using MathJax.

@JohnRennie no, I'll try that.
Nope. Not working either.

5:50 AM
What does your render Mathjax link look like i.e. what is the JavaScript behind it?
Mine is:
javascript:(function(){if(window.MathJax===undefined)

@WrichikBasu are you using an apple device?

No, Android, chrome browser.

Try IE

@skullpatrol what's that?

Oops

5:56 AM
@skullpatrol I don't think IE is available for Android.

Maybe, reboot @WrichikBasu

@skullpatrol tried a lot, even that. No hope. :-((
I can view math on the main site, but not on the chat.

Try switching to the desk top version.
You need to activate the bookmark everytime by clicking on it. @WrichikBasu
and reactivate it if you leave

@skullpatrol it's working on the linked site, but not here. Leave it. I'll do without it.
This is what I'm seeing even after activating the chat jax.

Q: questions completely disappearng

7:11 AM
@WrichikBasu after so much pestering by you, I ate fish today

Was it nice?

Sid
Suffice to say my experience was better than the last time I ate that.

You mean you didn't nearly die this time? :-)

Sid
No, I didn't. :-)

Yes, I can see how that would be an improvement :-)

7:13 AM
What kind of fish?

Sid
Whatever the people at the mess gave. I have no idea

Your canteen serves unidentified fish?

Sid
Well, no one really inquiries about that.

Glad to hear you're over the traumatic experience
There's a lot of fish in the sea :-D

If they won't even identify what fish it is that doesn't bode well for the taste ...

Sid
7:18 AM
Yeah, well.. We don't care for the taste as long as they give sufficient quantity to eat
@skullpatrol I am still a little apprehensive though.

...let's not discriminate against any particular species of fish or where they came from :P

@Sid well I suppose quantity has a quality all of its own

At least you took the first step, pal @Sid
After how many years?

Sid
4 years. If you are asking, "after how many years I ate fish?"

yup

7:30 AM
@Sid that's a good try, but if you are scared, you shouldn't try the experiment, simply becoz you're in a mess, and in case of sudden problems of choking, hospitalisation may be a problem. But still, trying is good :-)
I'm not, in any way, discouraging you, but be very careful.

$Fish^{Fish^{Fish^{Fish^{Salmon}}}}$

Somebody here is bent upon digging a Salmon's grave :-D

If your only criterion is that whatever you eat there has to be a lot of it then I guess it doesn't matter whether you eat fish or not :-)

1 hour later…
8:54 AM
@0celo Galois theory is very geometric.
Do you know anything about covering spaces?

9:16 AM
Can anyone explain this to me? I'm reading molecular structures and all related theories like VSEPR, and hybridisation and etc. Now, if someone finds a new molecule that hasn't been discovered yet. How does one find the structures of these new molecules experimentally? Using processes like spectroscopy? How are bond lengths calculated experimentally?

9:43 AM
Typically you would crystallise the compound and determine its structure using X-ray crystallography.
If you want you can then measure bond lengths and angles in the gaseous form using rotational spectroscopy.
@Kaumudi.H: in case you come looking for me to discuss the laptop I have to go out for about an hour. Back around 12:00 British summer time (16:30 your time I think).

I have a physics confusion, may I ask it here ?
(Or is it considered rude asking in chat ?)

Q: Unobservable degrees of freedom- Zero value vs. undefined

Shirish Kulhari(Ref. book Quantum Mechanics- The Theoretical Minimum) I've been reading about how the foundations of logic are different in quantum physics from those in the classical realm. Look at these beauties:
Beef with chopped ham and black pepper. Those are destinated to be my lunch later today!

All four?

Sid
Only four?

They are 6oz burgers! I can't eat more than four at a time :-)

Sid
Also, Beef and Ham together? :o

11:14 AM
I guess beef is a no no in India ...

Sid
Well, anything other than Chicken, Mutton, fish, prawn, lobster is a no-no. :-)
and egg
@JohnRennie But, doesn't beef and ham together in a single meal make it too heavy?

Do Indians not eat pork?

Sid
@JohnRennie It's not popular enough. to respect religious sentiments and so on and so forth

Muslims don't.

@Sid no, it works very well. Beefburgers can be a bit solid if they contain just beef, but putting finely chopped ham in breaks up the texture a bit and makes them more crumbly.
And the falvour of the ham works very well with the beef.

Sid
11:17 AM
@JohnRennie Beef is eaten in parts of Goa and Nagaland, I think.

All you need now is a religion that bans the eating of sheep and you're left with chicken and seafood!

Sid
@JohnRennie So, far nothing of that sort has been invented. :P
Of course, we can always make a new religion.

Aha, I can see there is an opening in the market!

Sid
All it takes is to write a book and get some followers

@JohnRennie Well, there already is Jainism which results in vegetarianism for its adherents.

11:20 AM
I know a lot of Hindus are vegetarian, though I'm not sure exactly what the motives are.

Sid
@ACuriousMind A reason why Gujarat(Our PM's home state) is predominantly vegetarian.
@JohnRennie I can give you a link, but I will have to search for a bit. Hold on

Buddhists are vegetarian.

Diet in Hinduism varies with its diverse traditions. The ancient and medieval Hindu texts do not explicitly prohibit eating meat, but they do strongly recommend ahimsa—non-violence against all life forms including animals. Many Hindus prefer a vegetarian or lacto-vegetarian lifestyle, and methods of food production that are in sync with nature, compassionate, and respectful of other life forms as well as nature. Most Hindu sects and gurus also promote a sattvic vegetarian diet as a natural obligation as part of living a lifestyle that causes minimum harm to other lifeforms. The diet of Hindus may...

@JohnRennie I think the same as for Jainism - minimization of suffering and avoidance of violence, with the difference that Hinduism does not require these principles to be applied to animals in all its forms.

Whereas we get away with no restrictions other than (historically) having to eat fish on Fridays.

Sid
11:23 AM
Here's one link which will confuse you further...

Q: Why do some Hindus, especially brahmins, not eat onion or garlic?

Afzaal Ahmad ZeeshanI have been with some Brahmins, and I was told that along with meat, they are also prohibited from eating onions and garlic. I can understand the meat prohibition because of cows, but what is the reason for the prohibition on onions and/or garlic?

@skullpatrol Wrong. Like Hinduism, there's considerable variance between the different Buddhist schools of thought about under which circumstances the consumption of meat is acceptable

> Onions and garlic, and the other alliaceous plants are classified as rajasic and tamasic, which means that they increase passion and ignorance.

Sid
Also, no one adheres to those restrictions in that link. People eat whatever they want.

Made a little plasma effect thing for fun

Much of the pleasure in life would be gone if I couldn't eat onion or garlic. I'll just have to be passionate and ignorant :-)

11:26 AM
@JohnRennie Which led to funny things like one bishop declaring the tail of the beaver a "fishy" part so he could eat it whenever he wanted :P
@Slereah Pass the LSD, please

Hypocrisy in the Church? Surely not?

It's quite hard to do efficiently because every pixel has to be recalculated every frame
So if I did it for the full screen that's 1200*800 pixels per frame to compute
they are randomized, btw
if you refresh the window you'll get a new one

(Semi-removed)

I'm a computer nerd - correct spelling is optional :-)

@JohnRennie Most compilers would disagree ;)

11:29 AM
In the olden days plasma effects were used to save space
since that meant that you didn't have to save some frame animations

@ACuriousMind There aren't that many keywords in most languages. Even I can remember how to spell them :-)

@Slereah No way to save the ones I like though :/

Well, just refresh enough times!
Statistically you'll find it again!

Though as I recall Pascal makes life entertaining by spelling keywords backwards.

Might take a while
there's a lot of parameters

11:31 AM
@JohnRennie Hm?

Or am I thinking of Algol? I recall a language with constructions like if ... fi

@JohnRennie Bash does that
I think Pascal did it too?

@Slereah I thought it was Pascal, or at least some variants of it.

Well, at least Delphi didn't do that

I think Pascal might have done endif
I did some pascal many many years ago
So it's a but blurry

11:34 AM
Aha! It's Algol 68.

I think Pascal is reasonable and just has if...then...else..., and you only need to use begin...end if you want to execute more than one command int he then- or else-blocks

Algol 68 was very popular with the Cambridge CS guys in the eighties, though I'm not sure if it ever made it out of the lab and into the real world.

Algol is the popular 60's language that didn't survive
Unlike COBOL, C or FORTRAN

Algol \ne Algol 68

BASIC also didn't survive :)

11:36 AM
Oh yes it did :-)

It went visual.

Not much though

@skullpatrol Please don't suggest to other users to stop coming here, it's not your place to tell others to visit or not visit thiis room.
@0celóñe7 That sounds like an ill-thought out strategy for doing research :P
Also, my Galois theory is rusty because I didn't use it for years, I'll probably have to google most things you ask me, anyway :P

12:29 PM
Please feel free to move that message to the trash @ACuriousMind

I felt perfectly free to do that even before you graciously allowed me to do so.

May I graciously ask why you didn't?

@JohnRennie Or rather, India has beef with beef.

Sid
^ That is so smooth. :P

@ACuriousMind Why would I ask you anything?

12:40 PM
Wow! @BalarkaSen you show up here now first? Before the math room v

@0celóñe7 Uh...you asked me why $\pi$ was transcendental just a few minutes ago?

@ACuriousMind that was a meme

I was pinged here.

@JohnRennie help
I'm about to set off the fire alarm

@0celóñe7 And if I treat your next question like one you'll complain about me ignoring you again? :P
@0celóñe7 ...why?

12:43 PM
@ACuriousMind "yolo"

@BalarkaSen ::tips hat::

I can't believe JR missed that.

Where's the beef?

Trying to season a frying pan

And how would that set off the fire alarm?
If the pan is burning, something has gone wrong :P

12:45 PM
Smoke from the oil?

@ACuriousMind you have to burn oil on to it
Do you not know what seasoning a pan means?
I don't think it's supposed to smoke this much though
I might need a better oil

Less heat.

@0celóñe7 Well, yes, but I think you're supposed to use an oil at a temperature that does not literally burn the oil

@ACuriousMind oh it's not on fire if that's what you think
It's also not smoking that much, my ventilation system is just crap
Not sure what to do
The whole place smells like burnt oil now, wonderful

Please don't insult any ventilation systems here.
The salmon don't like it ;P

12:49 PM
@0celóñe7 What oil did you use?

@Kaumudi.H: ah, I missed you, and now I have to go out again for an hour. Back about 3 p.m. BST. Have you looked at the message I left on Hangouts?

@ACuriousMind high temperature vegetable oil

1:52 PM
@ACuriousMind no comment?

2:15 PM
@0celóñe7 Not really, you seem to have made no obvious mistake :P

@ACuriousMind my brother says I had too much oil
I'm trying agai in the oven
He said stovetop always ends in disastee

2:30 PM
I don't think the oven will be hot enough
If you're getting lots of smoke then you're using too much oil

@JohnRennie 375F
how can a stove get hotter than that?
my oven goes up to 500F
allegedly

Gas or electric hobs?

electric
@JohnRennie and you can go too hot, you know...
some people think 375 is too much

If you're doing it on the hob you can tell when the pan is hot enough because the origanal silver colour of the pan goes bronze as the oil polymerises

@JohnRennie umm, cast iron is black
look, doing it "on the hob" is not possible because of the bad ventilation

@BernardoMeurer @dmckee I need some help with a C program. I basically want to input a sentence (containing any possible character) and print it. But there is a catch. If there is a \n in the sentence then only the part of the sentence before \n should be printed out. I wrote a code for this situation : paste.ofcode.org/sdj4Eg2VegKrCzdbUENJbD. This code seems to work fine but it fails in a certain situation.

@0celóñe7 Don't agree. I would harm myself by reading random parts of QM for example. Unlearning is more difficult than learning. If you start reading random parts of the book you might develop misconceptions (which you might not even get to know until much later)

@JohnRennie why does every GR question on this site need to have someone write the Einstein equations

@JohnRennie off to bios world again

To be honest I don't know a lot about the BIOS tweaking side ofthings.

3:23 PM
@JohnRennie thankfully when you crash 3 times during POST the BIOS reverts the RAM settings to default

@0celóñe7 you could always do that by removing the CMOS battery, but it's certainly more convenient to have it revert automatocally.

@JohnRennie I might have to do that, now the CPU light is on.

I only ever buy Dells, and they come preconfigured to the optimal settings. Though I appreciate the pre-built Dells wouldn't give you the best possible frame rates in games.
It makes life simple though.

@JohnRennie Ok I must be getting close. It's not crashing immediately but it won't boot
Remove the battery now? It's not triggering whatever makes it revert to default

Chek the manual. There may be a BIOS reset jumper.

@JohnRennie no luck trying to get high speed ram it seems

It seems a bit odd if the RAM is rated for the speed you're running it at. Maybe there's a limitation elsewhere e.g. the CPU

It seems to be a mobo issue
