@0celo7 it's not a solution in the sense that an apple is not a solution, i.e. it's missing information about the field as you go out of the surface

Are you not using the 64 bit version?

@EmilioPisanty You want $E$ and $B$ defined on all of $\Bbb R^3$?
I'm sure if you don't care about some points, you can extend the usual example (assuming it solves the equations)

@JohnRennie Of course I am, I'm just emotional to see the last memories of i686 wash away

@BernardoMeurer Lil Uzi is pretty good

6:04 PM
My first computer was an i686 :'-)

My first computer had a 6502 CPU :-)

My first computer had an i5

@JohnRennie BBC Micro?
That used a 6502 IIRC

Commodore Pet!

Aren't field lines supposed to either loop or stem from a source
something that dense curves do not do overall

6:07 PM
The BBC did use a 6502.

@JohnRennie Ah, Commodore machines were gorgeous
Did you ever have a Sinclair?

My first one had a Zilog Z80A CPU.

@BernardoMeurer A friend did. They were cheap - that's about the only good thing you can say about them. They were horrendously badly built.
The university has some BBC micros with the Z80 expansion pack, and they were really nice.
I remember coding FFTs on one.

$$\mathscr H^m(A)=\lim_{\delta\to 0}\inf_{A\subset \cup S_j,\mathrm{diam}(S_j)\le \delta}\sum \alpha_m \left(\frac{\mathrm{diam}(S_j)}{2}\right)^m$$
@ACuriousMind Measure theory is wonderful :(

@JohnRennie I wish I was around in the early days of computing
everything is too easy now
I need to do GPU arbitrary precision to make it entertaining

6:11 PM
There is a sense in which I agree. Though I think the best time was when Windows NT was first getting going. It was the first proper 32 bit version of Windows and for scientific programming it wqas a huge step forward.
In the early days there was a community of Windows NT enthusiasts just as there is for Linux now. That was before Windows turned into the corporate giant it is now.
It was a genuinely exciting time in personal computing.

Windows ME is the best windows

I managed to inveigle my way onto the Windows NT 3.1 beta test programme by claiming to be Unilever's IT department :-)

Only loses to Windows XP 64 bit version
@JohnRennie Lol, smartass

@BernardoMeurer Which loses to Ubuntu 8.01

@0celo7 an open subset around the curve will do

6:14 PM
@Giskard42 I hate all Ubuntus

I expect the answer to be "yes, this can be constructed"

Windows 95/98/Me wasn't as bad as people remember. It actually had a proper 32 bit kernel, though all the user mode stuff was 16 bit for some reason. You could run 32 bit apps on it with a bit of jiggery pokery.

but I would like something more solid than just intuition

@JohnRennie That's absolutely horrendous though :P
I rocked a Windows 98 machine for a while
It was alright

My mother continued using win98 until around 2014, even professionally

6:16 PM
@Giskard42 You clearly do no love your mother
(That was a joke)

My mother has now banned me from giving her new computers, tablets, phones etc on the grounds she's happy with what she's got.

@JohnRennie Lol, clearly a model son :P

I mean, she's still using a PC with a 2nd gen i3!

Probably good enough for her

I guess it's like the programmers' adage: the best operating system is the one you're most comfortable with

6:19 PM
@JohnRennie What architecture is that? Sandy Bridge?

I'll have to Google it ...

It's a 32nm die fo' sure
But Intel had a few archs with that
Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Clarkdale(?)
I think Clarkdale was the i3 one

Yes, Sandy Bridge. Well rmembered :-)

I'm on top of my architecture game it seems :P

I'm pretty certain it's an i3-2100

6:22 PM
What's the clock on that? 2.5GHz?
Nope, 3.1GHz apparently
cool

It's not a bad CPU. A bit slower than the 3rd gen/Ivy Bridge at the same clock speed but not drastically slower. But the power consumption is a lot higher.

I used a 45nm CPU until last year, it worked great

Which doesn't matter in a desktop PC I suppose. It's more of an issue for laptops.

AMD Phenom II x4 945 BE
Overclocked to 3.8GHz

Can't wait to see what ryzen will look like

6:25 PM
Can I get wolfram to plot the gamma function?

@Giskard42 I'm more excited for the 10nm die shrink
But yes, competition for Intel is also great news
have you seen the price leak?

No
Hopefully the IPC is somewhere closer to intel

@Giskard42 The performance we've seen so far would point that way

@BernardoMeurer That's not bad at all
$400

Oh well, beer calls.

6:30 PM
@Giskard42 The Intel equivalent goes for ~$1000 IIRC

Yeah
Are the amds still by default unlocked?

See everyone tomorrow morning, though not too early tomorrow morning :-)

I want to see the TDP, clock, and IPC though
@Giskard42 Yep
You just need the right chipset to OC
all CPUs are overclockable though
@JohnRennie Have a good evening John, catch you tomorrow

@JohnRennie TTYL
@BernardoMeurer Says the TDP right at that link there, no?
@BernardoMeurer 95w
Which is gorram decent

6:33 PM
@Giskard42 Yeah, but that's not official
96W is amazing

Yeah, my FX-8350 puts out like 150
at 60% the performance

the FX line was horrible

Yeah

The Phenom line was still good
at least IMO

I liquid cool it, overclock it, get it to 4.8ghz. I go over to my friend's house, he has some super old i3 with a ~2.1ghz clock, and he beats me by about 40% in every benchmark

6:35 PM
lol
The FX line was surprisingly bad
Which is sad because I'm deep down an AMD fanboy
because I could not have afforded most of my computer if not to AMD

Yeah, great clock, lots of cores, but the IPC was nonexistant
Yeah, it was nice that they were dirt cheap

I remember the Athlon days goddammit
When AMD was faster than Intel

Whelp, here's hoping we enter another golden age of the glorious amd
ayymd
Hey, anyone got any geiger counter recommendations?

There was a DIY geiger counter what was cool

I wonder if there are geiger counter enthusiasts like there are oscilloscope enthusiasts

6:44 PM
@Giskard42 What do you want to measure?

@Loong X rays :p
So I can detect if my tumors are getting tumors from this experiment

Oscilloscopes are wonderful

@BernardoMeurer Yeah, I've seen that one
I've seen it used a lot with Xrays in particular
But it's $100, and for that I can get a GMC-320-Plus
Which IDK anything about but seems to have good reviews online

Get a bird and a birdcage, put it next to the radiation source, if you dies you know it's working well

@BernardoMeurer And, in a pinch, you have an x-ray test object!

6:49 PM
Man, this record is good, I haven't flipped to the other side in two days!

The amazon reviews for some of these geigers make me so depressed

vzn
@JohnRennie also had PET and a 6502 atari 800, learned machine language on it. happy BTD! & luvd the easyrider story thx for sharing :)

@BernardoMeurer You haven't used U+202D in a while?

Can anyone buy me this?
@Giskard42 Hm? Left to right override unicode?

6:50 PM
"flipped to the other side"

Oh god
Go home

Nooo never

@Giskard42 I have just checked some; however, typical commercial dose rate monitors with Geiger-Müller tubes do not work in this energy range.

@Loong I was afraid that might be the case
The datasheet on the GMC-320-Plus says it's only good to 0.1kev gamma
So I guess scintillator is the way to go?

I saw that!
(removed)

6:57 PM
Wha... What happened?

Beats me.

No idea.
(removed)

:<

@BernardoMeurer dude
no

@DanielSank That was an allusion to the use of canaries in coal mines :/
Sentinel species are organisms, often animals, used to detect risks to humans by providing advance warning of a danger. The terms primarily apply in the context of environmental hazards rather than those from other sources. Some animals can act as sentinels because they may be more susceptible or have greater exposure to a particular hazard than humans in the same environment. People have long observed animals for signs of impending hazards or evidence of environmental threats. Plants and other living organisms have also been used for these purposes. == Historical examples == There are countless...

7:06 PM
@BernardoMeurer I know d00d.

Better the bird than you.

It's a good plan.
We use a similar technique in our lab

@Giskard42 You could use a plane-parallel ionization chamber.
That's what they use for mammography.
Electronic dosimeters with diode detectors would also work. They start at 15 keV.

@Loong How about film dosimeters?
Would those work?

7:22 PM
@Giskard42 Yes, but you cannot read them yourself.

@Loong Ah yes.
Yknow what, I should just figure out a better adjustable power supply that I can turn down to a safe, non-x-ray producing level.

@Giskard42 This film shows 30 mSv from 120 kV X ray.

@Loong That's pretty neat

7:55 PM
@BernardoMeurer Uzi likes Pokémon

8:24 PM
@BernardoMeurer listening to Vince Staples
It's very strange

obe
i bought waterprood pants and now im gonna go roll in snow xd

Make a snow angel.

9:11 PM
@obe that's insane

obe
why

9:28 PM
hello all

Howdy :)

yo
wazzup?

nothing much, just got home from school
no homework =D

Why no homework?
It's the weekend you gotta have homework.

a. luck b. iowa assessments this week, so most teachers feel semi-bad.

9:35 PM
I see.

i mean, i guess there's homework in one class if you haven't already finished it.
but most of the class has finished it, so.

How many subjects do you take?

well, it's 8th grade, so 99% of my classes are required. but this semester, math, english, social studies, science, spanish, health, and engineering/robotics.
last semester, same thing, just sub P.E. in for health and study hall in for engineering.

cool
gotta run cya
Enjoy your homework free weekend

thanks, have a good day =)

9:45 PM
Engineering?
Are you in a rich county?

yes? i think?
why?

@heather because most of us didn't have good classes like that
I had unnecessary classes that kept me out of trouble

@heather Your middle school has an engineering class?
Dang, I'm jealous :O

@SirCumference, yeah, it's super awesome.

So I wouldn't go buying drugs

9:50 PM
@0celo7 uh...wasn't planning on it.

I wasn't either. But people kept trying to sell me drugs

@0celo7 I haven't had that. Maybe my grade's big enough I don't see those people?

I had 600 people in my grade

in Mathematics, 6 mins ago, by Akiva Weinberger
Graph theory game http://treksit.com/?thegame

10:09 PM
@0celo7 800
@DanielSank the "buying an x-wing" post has got to be one of the best I've ever read.

@heather Jesus

@0celo7 and there's two schools that have an 8th grade in my district

Do you switch to high school next year?

obe
@0celo7 lol i had 300 or less in hs
70 in middle school

@0celo7 you should have bought some

10:24 PM
@BalarkaSen Then I would have had to kill myself

@skillpatrol sort of

are you that paranoid about drugs

they do it weird in this district
the building i'm in is for 8th and 9th grade
then there's a 10th-12th building.
so technically i'm in highschool (classes are highschool classes and everything) but same building.

That is strange.

very.

10:27 PM
that's how it works here too

10th-12th together?

Right.

Do you separate the STEM students?

We do.

we don't. i mean, they'd probably take different classes and everything. but same building.

10:36 PM
@heather :D That comment made my day.

@DanielSank, it was so hilarious! =D
the article made my day =)
that and being invited to do the AMA
in Physics Meta, 1 hour ago, by vzn
@heather lol! hey youre very outspoken and your idealism/ commitment to freedom of speech/ diversity is commendable. plz consider being a guest speaker, can think of various topics for discussion/ interview :) http://meta.physics.stackexchange.com/questions/7783/physics-stack-exchange-ask-‌me-anything-ama
not sure what to think about that.

Go for it!

@heather Just do it and see what happens.

It'll be fun.

@DanielSank that's what i was thinking.
not sure i'll have much to say though =)

10:39 PM
There's no such thing as freedom of speech. It's an illusion.

You @BalarkaSen should join in too.

nah i'm good

It's just for fun.
Gain some experience
We could do it in the math room.

I think interviewing 0celo7 would be more fun than that

What do you think^? @0celo7
The main thing here is to create interest.
...and, of course, have fun...
imho

11:02 PM
@skillpatrol i don't go there
@BalarkaSen yes
@BalarkaSen insane
@BalarkaSen everything is an illusion that goes away the moment you die

11:15 PM
@0celo7 I know :P

vzn
11:45 PM
@BalarkaSen hes invited! maybe more peer pressure will nudge him :o ... & think you would make a great guest too :)

vzn
@Sᴋᴜʟʟᴘᴇᴛʀᴏʟ ?

Keeping the AMA alive.

@Sᴋᴜʟʟᴘᴇᴛʀᴏʟ how come you haven't been banned yet?

why should he be

11:56 PM
@vzn hello
mind if we talk here?

@0celo7 Does it?

vzn
@heather just noticed you have quite sizeable rep in short time. an hr goes by quickly. some thoughts about what you might talk about (entirely up to you). (1) visit with DS & his lab, your impressions (2) your dads background/ inspiration on your directions into physics (3) what about physics appeals to you (4) thoughts on being one of the younger members of this site (5) where you got such dedication to discussion openness (6) areas of physics youve earned rep on the site (7) etc

Maybe the realm of the dead looks exactly like the realm of the living, with even more illusions and even more realizations that everything's an illusion. We'll never know

@vzn sorry, quick rewind: could you summarize what the AMA in general is like? I've never been part of one...i skimmed the post and am still a tad unclear on it. (didn't realize it was an hr, etc)

vzn
@heather sure lets talk. rats a busy pool table is free right now gotta go grab it or will lose it, back after 3 games.

11:58 PM

vzn
@heather it has links to the transcripts and the meta posts where ppl introduce themselves. you basically just introduce yourself on meta & then people can post questions theyre interested in there.

lol

@vzn okay, and then i answer them in chat?
