I wonder if they still have the monocle-looked awesome on your picture! :-P

user228700
I am so friggin' tired of learning all these definitions, ugh!

user228700
I am only skimming through them-I cannot be bothered to learn this stuff by heart by investing hours into it.

user228700
Cramming doesn't come naturally to me, I'm afraid :-/

@JohnR: A few days from now marks one year of me having this laptop :-D

It's same here. I'm making short notes for each chapter

Easier to remember that way

@ooolb You just gotta vote to close a question. Once the question is closed, you get the hat

Anonymous
@SirCumference He can't vote to close with such low rep

@Blue I know :P

user228700
I remember I got it during the WinterBash, how I wasn't able to view my hats on the mobile app and then was pleasantly surprised when I logged in from my "new" laptop, haha!

12:03 PM
I'm still a little mad about the whole rep thing

user228700
@Blue I'm not even making any notes.

@Kaumudi.H But you still only have the one laptop! You urgently need more laptops!

Sid
@JohnRennie I have got 3!

@Kaumudi.H You didn't hear about it?

user228700
@SirCumference Huh? NO. Whatever happened?

was it a ban

@Kaumudi.H Some scum kept harassing him, calling him a Nazi, until Mafia decided to delete his account
in Discussion on question by claude chuber: Is it acceptable to quote a Nazi claim on Physics SE?, Dec 27 '16 at 1:41, by user116211
And yes @NorbertSchuch, I'm not distancing myself in any way; please don't over speculate anything. Days after showing this post, I've talked privately with the mods here as I deem I'm answerable to any action of mine here. I'm sorry if you concluded from this quote and my Twitter account (??) and my removing of the account, that I'm spreading hatred and racism.

12:21 PM
Heisenberg was a nazi
I'd quote Heisenberg

user228700
Oh, crap, that sucks! He was a valuable contributor to the site :-(

@Kaumudi.H Yeah :(
It's been a year, and no one's been able to get in contact with him. Apparently the guy was harassing him on Facebook, etc.
Not just SE

user228700
Oh, Lord.

Did Werner von Braun do anything in theoretical physics, I wonder
Let's see
He was apparently a SS-Sturmbannführer

user228700
Gah, that sucks!

user228700
12:24 PM
S007 is still banned, is he?

He was apparently only an engineer
Even worse than a nazi

user228700
Ah, I see paracetamol's still banned.

Wait is it "one horse open sleigh" or "Santa's open sleigh"?

For some reason they don't include anything published between 1933 and 1945

@Kaumudi.H Why?

12:27 PM
even though "Proposal for a Workable Fighter with Rocket Drive" was 1939

user228700
@Abcd Said some stuff here in April, I think.

Sid
@SirCumference that is why people should be careful while providing personal info around this parts

@Kaumudi.H The paracetamol of Chemistry.SE?

Yep.

Hm, did any nazi write any GR
I can't think of one

good riddance imo

Oh, so ACM suspended him?

@Slereah Just yesterday we were talking about Teichmuller on math chat
Great mathematician. Also a dedicated Nazi

As an alternative, ACM could have just chat-banned him. Coz he writes good answers.

user228700
12:31 PM
@Abcd I think so, yes.

user228700
@Abcd He still does?

Hey @JohnRennie, My laptop fixed itself. Somehow I got it to turn off, and when I turned it back on it restored to the previous version of windows and everything works fine (for now)

@Slereah I still wonder what that paper is talking about

@PrathyushPoduval I forget exactly how that's done, but you should be able to Google it easily.

@JohnRennie Is there any way to check if anything else has gone wrong? Thanks for your help!

mochizuki actually made his directorial debut with a new movie

@SirCumference How long's your final? 3 hours?

@JohnRennie It's an option I have seen in the update settings

@PrathyushPoduval just use the laptop. If it works fine then it's fine.

12:52 PM
it's releasing in the Hodge theaters

@Kaumudi.H Yep

user228700
Ooh.

@Prathyush however I still think the best way to get a nice fast reliable laptop is to wipe it and do a clean install of Windows 10 yourself.

@Kaumudi.H Which finals are you taking?

@Kaumudi.H Oh, what classes did ya take?

12:55 PM
@PrathyushPoduval the Win10 install will have been done by the manufacturer and will have lots of non-microsoft junk on it. Do a nice clean install with an install image downloaded from MS and you'll have a stable Windows install that won't fall over when you try to update it.

@PrathyushPoduval not really, all portable HDs are pretty much the same.

@Kaumudi.H I've been a member of the PSE for aaaages, but I used not to hang out in the chat because, well, no-one used it much so it was pretty boring.

@JohnRennie are the application of the graphic card included in the manufacturer junk? (i.e non essential)

@JohnRennie I know, yeah, and now look! :-)

@0celo7 Yeah, sorry, it appears my afternoon is not as free as I thought it would be :/

Apparently the boundary conditions for the particle in a box is because otherwise they're not part of the Hamiltonian's domain
Neat

2:27 PM
@DanielSank I'm not impressed by it, it's completely normal to do formal gauge theory first for the finite-dimensional/discrete case, if what you're interested in is truly "gauge systems" in general. The unfortunate fact is that gauge systems often show up naturally the first time in field theory, and the people teaching are usually not interested in teaching about gauge system in general, but just in that specific class of field theories.

3:00 PM
abc

@Sid I only had to sell one kidney

Sid
Thank God

What are "physical" states, anyway

@Slereah probably $\mathscr S$

3:07 PM
What subset of the Hilbert space should a state be a part of to be a physical state
Should it be like $\text{Dom}(H)$ or something?

idk where does Hall say that

He only mentions that on physical grounds, we shouldn't have states that are $\neq 0$ near the boundary for particles in a box
And later on, says that those states aren't in $\text{Dom}(H)$

@Slereah I've actually never understood why we put those boundary conditions

Is there a general rule for physical states like that

physically speaking
@ACuriousMind

3:15 PM
mb this should be a
PSE question
0
Q: What subset of the Hilbert space is a physical state

SlereahNot all Hilbert space vectors are generally considered physical, due to various reasons. A particular example (as found in Hall's "Quantum mechanics for mathematicians") is the classic particle in a box example : only states obeying the boundary conditions $\psi(0) = \psi(L) = 0$ are considered. ...

3:30 PM
@Slereah rekt by Valter

Noooo
Did I understand things correctly
Does this imply what I said
"The domain of $\hat H$ should be chosen in such a way that $\hat H$ is essentially self-adjoint and, thus, symmetric, meaning that $\langle \phi, \hat H \psi \rangle = \langle \hat H \phi, \psi \rangle$ for all $\phi, \psi$ in $\text{Dom}(\hat H)$. For this to hold, $\phi$ and $\psi$ must satisfy appropriate boundary conditions, which will allow the boundary term in the integration by part to be zero."
Or am I a fool
Oh I guess what Valter is saying is that it only matters wrt specific operators?
I dunno, though
I don't think you can really make a physical state if it has a non-measurable attribute like that

@BalarkaSen I just came across this, have you seen this ting?

I have managed to confuse myself, and can't find my way out of it atm:

Is it correct to say that given an observer with timelike velocity $u^a$, and a lightray that propagates along $e^a$ in the rest frame, i.e. satisfying $u^ae_a = 0$, we must certainly have the tangent vector of the light ray be given by $\ell^a = \omega(u^a + e^a)$. Thus the dual null vector must be given by $n^a = (u^a - e^a)/2\omega$, and so we cannot take $n^a$ to be paralelly propagated along $\ell^a$, because there is no freedom left in specifying $n^a$?
Both $u^a$ and $e^a$ are of course normalized
and $\omega$ is the circular frequency of the lightray
I feel like the split $(u^a$, $e^a)$ must be observer dependent, and so the satement must be false, but I can't see how where the argument is wrong.
I' guessing it's something pretty obvious
or perhaps I'm stupid :)

3:53 PM
@Slereah I don't really understand what the issue is

If it's a physical state
Like an actual particle wavefunction
Surely you can measure any quantity you desire on it
Well, to some reasonable degree
So shouldn't it be part of $Dom(H) \cap Dom(x) \cap Dom(p) \cap ...$
Or something
Or does it not matter

@Slereah that seems like a good thing to be a part of
Dom(x) is kind of trivial for a compact domain

Well my point is
Shouldn't a real quantum state be part of the domain of every physically measurable operator

yeah probably

but then why is Moretti so not agreeing
