This job growth started well before Trump took office
Oh look another month another John Kelly will resign rumour

@Wipqozn Yeah but it hadn't solved all the problems yet so obviously Obama did a bad job
Everyone knows when a hole is dug you just walk straight out of it
@MadScientist Yeah kind of feel like we should stop listening to whichever anonymous source claims this repeatedly yet here we are again
My favorite version of this rumor is that Trump did actually fire Kelly, but he simply stayed and ignored that
It wouldn't even be that implausible at this point and I hate it
Just have to wait until he gets angry about something else and then he just forgets
In rare remarks, Tillerson calls Trump “pretty undisciplined, doesn’t like to read, doesn’t read briefing rpts”—adds, “So often... @Yuuki Anyone who uses the term "both sides" with regards to climate science is being intellectually dishonest at best, because the idea that both sides are equal is the biggest false equivalence I've ever seen.
no, see, you got to see the big picture

Oh wow this was a key part of Delaware history I was missing
On this day in 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Federal Constitution at the Golden Fleece Tavern in Dover, DE. Happy #DelawareDay from First State Heritage Park. http://bit.ly/2AVRDOu
Not only were we the first state we did it while drunk, in the truest American fashion
Sources tell me the FBI is working with SBI on possible election fraud in Bladen & Robeson Counties surrounding absentee ballots. I'm told a federal case would be handled in the Middle District in Greensboro. @wsoctv #NC09 #ncpol
Now a federal investigation too!
@TimStone Which part, that Delaware ratified the Constitution first or that it was done in a tavern?
That it was done in a tavern, we make a big point of constantly pointing out the first part because we don't have a lot else going on besides tax-free shopping
@puzzlepiece87 Little disturbing how the article doesn't really touch on how Orwellian that is but then again, SCMP is one of the state newspapers, right?
The tone is more "look at this cool new technology".
@Yuuki You probably already know this but SCMP has a reputation of being a little more freelancing but yes still quite sensitive to Chinese control.
And again, you already know this, but my impression compared to state media was that independence shining through.
17:01
@Unionhawk Thank you for helping me see the light @CapitalistHawk
Not only do you have reporting on a project sensitive enough that the researcher doesn't want to be named, but you have several explicit mentions of surveillance, and none of the usual bombast of "maintaining the security of citizens and the glory of China" that I get from Xinhua and other Beijing papers.
I suppose the state media would've probably just not released that article at all.
@Yuuki You've flown out of Beijing and read the papers before, right?
@Yuuki Exactly, in my opinion.
@puzzlepiece87 I am not really a newspaper person.
@Yuuki I'm a voracious reader in general but especially in China when I can't take my phone and computer with me. It's newspapers or books.
> One experiment in northern China’s Inner Mongolia involved flying the birds over a flock of sheep – animals that are well known for their keen sense of hearing and ability to be easily spooked. The flock paid no attention whatsoever to the drone flying above, the person said.

Unrelated, but I found a Reddit comment that kinda struck me.
> It's always agenda pushing when it doesn't agree with their agenda. And it's always bringing politics into art when it isn't their politics.

These people don't understand that art is inherently political. Hell, if you are someone who isn't the norm, existence itself is sometimes "political".
Particularly that last bit.
@Yuuki On God that last bit so much
Just being able to dismiss civil rights issues as 'politics' is just the height of privilege

@GodEmperorDune Glad you like it. I continue to be glad Jemele Hill is at The Atlantic.

Different article about St. Louis suburb restaurant owners crying crocodile tears about the fact that they have to pay people more than $9 an hour to find enough workers:
> After closing the Greek Kitchen in Ellisville, co-owner Joe Kandel ran a test ad seeking servers on Indeed.com and Craigslist for a new restaurant in Kirkwood, which happens to be significantly closer to the city and its labor pool. The response would determine whether he and Nicholas would actually reopen in the mid-county suburb.
Doing job apps is miserable enough without people putting up positions that don't exist, grrr.
> But Walsh says Parkway South High School already asked him to participate in a job fair for students. The restaurant made toasted ravioli and gooey butter cake, he says, "in the hope that some of the kids at the school would say, 'Hey, we want to come there and work for you."

"Not one person came to the restaurant," he says.

The meeting to find solutions quickly devolves into a conversation about how things aren't the way they used to be.

"The kids today, there is no need to have a job because mom and dad take care of them," says Walsh. He turns to a representative from the Philly Pret
19:26
@puzzlepiece87 HAhaha what

I don't know, maybe stop pretending like things are so difficult when you can just vote one time for a thing rather than doing email battles with your boss or some garbage

More making the easy solution hard:
> Sam Garanzini, senior vice president of Pasta House, says he is considering offering bus passes to employees making the commute from the city to its locations in west county.
> "It's not a policy that I'm going to wave in front of everybody because the next thing you know you'll have somebody taking a bus two blocks to get to work just so they can have a bus pass in their pocket."
No, instead we should definitely do this:
> "We have a guy who it takes two and a half hours, one way," Tim Walsh tells people at the chamber of commerce forum. Walsh is managing officer of the Des Peres restaurant, which focuses on classic St. Louis dishes. "When he's working nights and I'm there doing whatever, I offer to take him home ... It's out of the way but it saves him two and a half hours of riding the bus, and hopefully it gets to where he realizes we're trying to do something to help him stay at the restaurant."

@GodEmperorDune this is ridiculous, I love it. The whole article was great.
A blast of 94,100 new jobs last month has knocked the country’s unemployment rate down to 5.6 per cent — its lowest level since Statistics Canada started measuring comparable data more than 40 years ago. globalnews.ca/news/4739555/…
@GodEmperorDune >If methylmercury levels rise too high, the energy company said it will issue a warning to residents living in nearby communities.
Oh boy, warnings.
@Yuuki yepppppppppp
apparently quick clay is a substance that loses rigidity when it comes into contact with fresh water, so what could go wrong with building a freshwater dam on top of it?
@Yuuki methyl mercury is quite nasty
Karen Wetterhahn (October 16, 1948 – June 8, 1997) was an American professor of chemistry at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, who specialized in toxic metal exposure. She died of mercury poisoning at the age of 48 due to accidental exposure to the organic mercury compound dimethylmercury (Hg(CH3)2). Protective gloves in use at the time of the incident provided insufficient protection, and exposure to only a few drops of the chemical absorbed through the gloves proved to be fatal after less than a year. == Career == Wetterhahn was born in Plattsburgh, New York, and had degrees from St. Lawrence...
21:05
@MadScientist :/
For anyone interested in just how dangerous it is
Though to be fair, the case I linked above is dimethylmercury, which is even more dangerous
It's not immediately clear to me where the methylmercury is coming from, or if there's just a high concentration of mercury already present in the soil and surrounding vegetation that will be converted during the flooding
I know that fish tend to accumulate methylmercury, and that is one source of mercury for humans that eat the fish. Not sure how that works in this particular case
@GodEmperorDune Yeah that's the main thing that has me really, really confused. I don't understand why you'd build a dam at such a location. Even setting aside any environmental and social concerns, it just seems like a risky investment.
@Wipqozn i don't either, it seems like a terrible idea that should have been stopped already

@puzzlepiece87 a dam that collapses actually loses shareholder value though
not to mention all the death
plus this isn't the US where the company can laugh all the way to the bank
@GodEmperorDune Thank goodness for that
Did you see how much the estimated cost has ballooned over time?
Virginia high school teacher fired for refusing to use transgender student's new pronouns: richmond.com/news/virginia/…
Maybe it's just a sunk cost fallacy where they don't want to lose what they've already put in or something?
@Wipqozn Man, what a stupid thing to get fired over
21:20
> Vlaming agreed to use the student’s new, male name. But he tried to avoid using any pronouns — he or him, and she or her — when referring to the student. The student said that made him feel uncomfortable and singled out.

> Administrators sided with the boy, telling Vlaming he could not treat his transgender pupil differently than he treats others.
@puzzlepiece87 That's what I'm thinking
I mean, why? What does it cost you to use a different word?
@GodEmperorDune Besides, the company itself isn't paying for the construction.
> its price tag has climbed to $12.7 billion with the bill going to a province of just 530,000 people.
> Muskrat Falls public inquiry over cost overruns begins
> The independent inquiry, led by provincial Supreme Court Justice Richard LeBlanc, will examine how the project was approved and executed, and why it was exempt from oversight from the Public Utilities Board.
@SaintWacko IT costs him his right to be a bigot
Exempt from oversight always leads to good things. I wonder what board member of the company is related to what government official.
THE WORST FATE OF ALL
> Speaking in his own defense, Vlaming said he loves and respects all his students and had tried to reach a solution based on “mutual tolerance.” That effort was rejected, he said, putting him at risk of losing his job for having views held by “most of the world for most of human history.”
Needing to tolerate to intolerance makes no sense at all, and is the exact opposite of what a tolerant society should strive to achieve. So, take your "mutal tolerance" and go live in Atlanstic.
21:24
@Wipqozn "I am willing to tolerate your first name so you should tolerate my intolerance of everything else about you."
Second, "most of the world for most of human history" also thought slavery was totally a-okay, so take that nonsense argument and make sure not to overpay on your new 1-bedroom unit in Atlantis.
> To highlight the pitfalls of strict rules against “misgendering,” Vlaming and his lawyer pointed out that [Principal] Hochman used the wrong pronoun for the student during his testimony.
Yeah accidentally misgendering someone and intentionally misgendering someone is completely different, so nice try with that.
School isn't firing you because you used the wrong pronoun accidentally or just took some time to adjust or anything, but because you made a very deliberate choice to not recognize the childs gender, and treated them differently than other students because they were gender identity.
you know how the saying goes
it costs $0 to not be like this
that was the kitty
She had her tail on the keyboard
She's quite the rascal
@Unionhawk good saying
@Wipqozn Pics (of the kitty) or it didn't happen
@puzzlepiece87 Done, but posted it in the bridge
21:42
@Wipqozn Which imagehost?
@puzzlepiece87 For the most part that's what it seems. To get the full picture it helps to know that the province has a generation facility upstream, and that the province is also largely surrounded by Quebec. The upstream facility is a joint project with Hydro-Quebec, who is royally screwing them on rates for the next few decades, so the downstream facilities with underwater transmission lines across the Gulf of St. Lawrence to @Wipqozn and beyond were an attractive prospect
Also the new power company executive admits openly his predecessors unwittingly or otherwise misrepresented the costs, so I guess they weren't interested in admitting that at the time
@TimStone Thanks for this great context!
shakes fist QUEBEC
@TimStone Also worth noting that Newfoundland currently has the highest unemployment rate of all Canadian provinces and territories too, and by a wide margin too. It's at 15%, nunvaut (way up north) is second with with 13% and then the third highest is PEI with 9%. And as posted above, Canada wide unemployeement is 5%, so their unemployment rate is a staggering 300% above the rest of the country.
aka so the prospect of making jobs would also be a selling point
We have to assume no one wanted to look @Wipqozn's cat in the face and tell it it wasn't getting that sweet, sweet power
21:50
@TimStone MAkes sense
@puzzlepiece87 stack.imgur, but I posted it in the bridge to avoid derailing this chat too much.
@Wipqozn making jobs by screwing over the future, wtg
Local environmental concerns aside obviously hydro seems attractive for its Not Fossil Fuel quality but the demand for their power export has apparently not played out quite as expected so just an all around failed gamble here
@GodEmperorDune You're thinking too long term. Gotta look at that short term gain.
There's a dilbert clip for this...
It is being reported that Leakin' James Comey was told by Department of Justice attorneys not to answer the most important questions. Total bias and corruption at the highest levels of previous Administration. Force him to answer the questions under oath!
Anyone have an idea what this is about? Something in his testimony today, probably, but what?
@Wipqozn Yup, imgur is blocked at work. I try to avoid Bridge at work but was willing to do it for cat pictures if I'd be able to see the cat pictures once I got there. I'll look later at home.

BREAKING: Federal prosecutors recommend "substantial term of imprisonment" for former Trump attorney Michael Cohen. https://abcn.ws/2EiJtnr
This is new. Federal prosecutors have said for the first time in a court filing that Cohen committed campaign finance crimes "in coordination with and at the direction of" President Trump.
@MadScientist By Department of Justice attorneys? As in the Trump administration Department of Justice?

@Yuuki Probably, but with Trump you can never be sure that words have meaning
@TimStone CRIMES! INTO THE VEINS!
lol Tim Mak makes a cameo in the documents in reference to that time Cohen threatened him over a story

@GodEmperorDune I doubt Tim has any places left where you can inject that stuff
