@TimStone I dunno I think current affairs take here that it's the option between placating a murderer and hoping a kidnapper is merciful is compelling here, and ultimately their goal is mainly to circumvent certain rules about the detention of children with mothers anyway

JUST IN: Trump orders more tariffs on China after China retaliates with its own tariffs http://hill.cm/ZlFvtM3

@Memor-X trade wars are so easy to win

@GodEmperorDune yeh, just keep hitting dat tariff button until the other side submits
and prey their big red tariff button isn't bigger

@StevenTDennis FWIW, it wasn’t a joke, according to my source, who said his attitude is let the shit hit the fan, make Corey chief of staff, instruct Cabinet secretaries to do things that are illegal — so be it.
Very healthy

So uh, that Nielsen presser was horrible but Sessions says to hold his beer:
Sessions says this is not like Nazi Germany "because in Nazi Germany, they were keeping the Jews from leaving the country!"

@TimStone sorry, I didn't see the full thread, only saw this one because @fart retweeted it
which says a lot
that's how you know shit is real

@quartata nope, it was a quote from the show, something about "don't let them tell you it's about the children, cause it's not"
also ann coulter has some bullshit about crisis actors

> For security measures, our great American government is rounding up all citizens that have any Canadian blood, and putting them into camps [Canadians are shown being rounded up and put into caged trucks. The trucks are shown entering some camps].

All Canadian-American citizens are to report to one of these death camps right away. Did I say death camps? I meant happy camps, where you will eat the finest meals, have access to fabulous doctors [a dentist pulls out a tooth], and be able to exercise regularly [digging, that is].
minus the doctors and exercise
i'm sure being a forma wallmart it'll have food

> All three of these books document that employer opposition in those days included physical attacks against workers, and even the strategic use of murder, which ought to help put today's employer offensives in perspective.
It's true
at least we don't have that these days lol
LMFAO
> Stepah-Norris and Zeitlin devote a chapter to Lewis's dealings with the left: He would hire organizers out of the Communist Party, then purge them once they'd won the campaign. The chapter is titled for Lewis's famous quip about this tactic: "Who gets the bird, the hunter or the dog?" The authors provide a small mountain of evidence that the unions led by the leftist factions were not only the most effective but also the most democratic
sadly uh
we... don't have labor organizing experience lol

damn
There's an example of a majority petition from members of SEIU Local 1107 to management in here
Which was printed as a 3 by 5... FOOT poster
(the petition is essentially "we, the proud employees of UMC and Clark County, work hard for the people of LV. Our demands are reasonable, and our negotiating committee, which we support, is ready to talk.")

4:55 AM
looking at my news feeds, like most of it for the past few days has been from the US about Trump separating children from parents. is it just me or could he not go more than a week (after US/NK Sumit) before wanting to be the center of attention again

5:05 AM
@Memor-X he can't last more than a few days

@GodEmperorDune was Ronald Reagan like that?
just wondering if this is something to do with TV Stars being presidents or not

@Memor-X Reagan was before my time and he did his share of fuct policies, but pretty sure it was not this bad

5:23 AM
He certainly laid the groundwork for this bad though

daily reminder that reagan basically did the space force

trump stole everything he knows from reagan, really
he's just not nearly as good at this

For two days, residents in Portland have surrounded the local ICE detention center with a 24 hr encampment. Tonight, without a fucking shred of irony, ICE agents complained those blocking their trucks were "keeping them apart from their families." #SurroundICE #OccupyICEPDX
(there is no Cincinnati field office, nearest is Louisville)
Find an office near you ice.gov/contact/field-offices
Finding detention centers is trickier
if anyone has a source on that it'd be appreciated
"standard" ICE detention is often done in county jails, so that'd be one place to start research
but they aren't allowed to hold children there

Exactly! It was recently made great again.

Welcome news: the fundraiser for @RAICESTEXAS has cleared $4MM https://twitter.com/jguynn/status/1009044521827487744
mmm I think @GodEmperorDune retweeted a point yesterday that this is kind of dumb?
Well not dumb but more that while everyone is putting money to a good cause it's not clear that the recipient can actually effectively make use of a sudden influx in cash
But no one considers that, so we just go "Ah, mission accomplished"

user15026
What is the cause?

It's for helping reunite the immigrant children with their parents, RAICES provides legal services
So it's a definite good thing but at some point you assume they reach a saturation point where they can't do More Good and just have a lot of cash. Which is not bad but also not immediately useful
From the outside though everyone likes the big dollar value going towards the good thing so we don't consider if that's the most effective distribution of funds

user15026
Yeah, after a point you can only do so much because you only have so many people or options or power and now they have infinite money but what does it actually help

user15026
Like yay this organization is now rolling in it, but if I had to guess there are other places that could also help that didn't get this stuff

user15026
Because we just like going well we threw large amounts of money at it why isn't it solved

Wow, that's even more petty than Trump

that doesn't seem like a good idea

1:54 PM
@TimStone that sounds like an evil genius plan there

You have to click thru for the whole picture because not only are they digging this canal but they plan to dump nuclear waste into the bottom of it

@TimStone i was about to say it was going to be cheaper since with a wall you have to dug too, but that was assuming they were just going to let the sea fill it

I mean they are, lol, but they're also using it as a nuclear waste dump site
We used to do that with nuclear waste too off the coast of New Jersey until the public realised that radiation is actually Quite Bad

@TimStone well maybe Saudi Arabia is planning on turning Qatar into a prison island like that from Escape from New York/LA

lmao

1:58 PM
but instead of mines and a military presence, they had deadly deadly radiation

Crime in Germany is up 10% plus (officials do not want to report these crimes) since migrants were accepted. Others countries are even worse. Be smart America!
The President has moved on to suggesting that he knows the real crime numbers and that the officially reported ones are fake
Is where we're at here

I mean that's been the standard right wing talking point
that actually they aren't reporting crimes done by muslims for reasons

@TimStone no he knows "alternative facts"

@TimStone the latest report on that was presented by Horst Seehofer from the CSU, which is the rightmost mainstream party in Germany.

2:01 PM
ofcause there will be people who will say that it's plausible that Trump is right, to which i say "since when was the host of The Apprentice a Master Spy who was stealing information out of Germany"

they're currently busy almost blowing up the government because they want much more restrictive border policies

@Ash yeah this entire mess is not an easy problem and while I think it is good to fund legal help there are limits to that. Heck, even mobilizing and surrounding ICE facilities has limits I think but I also don't know how we could possibly get deeper than either of those
organizing prisoners is hard enough but it's even harder when the intended pipeline is asylum claim denied->sent back
and when the circumstances are gestures broadly at the somehow worse than just prison situation they have created here

Lindsey Graham just now: “It’s not all the Democrats’ fault .... I’ve tried a bunch, now it’s President Trump’s chance. He’s president - not Obama. I think there’s a deal to be had.” https://twitter.com/realdonaldtrump/status/1009071403918864385
I mean it's only the Democrats' fault in the most indirect of ways but alright Lindsey
At least we're establishing for the record that the Big Boy President is indeed the one supposed to be running the show, I guess

@TimStone depends on which church

2:31 PM
Oh god things are so bad even the Mooch is making sense (but still covering for Trump)

@TimStone ... wow

@Unionhawk lol apparently there is only one entrance and exit to the parking lot

@Unionhawk hmmm, so ICE is trapped within its own walls? chef's kiss

it does certainly help our mobilization efforts

@Unionhawk ... this is beautiful.

from what I understand, there's a solid anarchist-adjacent presence in Portland

i mean it's portland so

@GodEmperorDune and they are appealing the protesters to "let them go home to their families"
\ironicat_exploding_into_chef's_kiss

@ToxicFrog All we need to complete the trifecta is "why should the children be punished for what their parents do?".

@ToxicFrog yeah, @uni pointed that out in their earlier tweet, too perfect

By all means, compare these shitheads to Nazis. Again and again. I'm with you.
Note: this is the official Twitter account of Mike Godwin. as in Godwin's Law

2:58 PM
I still find it weird that Godwin's Law is somehow supposed to shut down discussions or arguments.
It's just an observational comment on Internet debates.

@Nzall the one compelling point i've seen for why NOT to do this is that it turns the argument into one about whether the nazi analogy is appropriate vs whether the policies in question are bad and should be stopped

Godwin's Law really is a fact, at least with r9k :P

@GodEmperorDune I mean the far right is always going to reframe things anyway so I'm not convinced that pointing out that these are literally by definition concentration camps even if they are not death camps really enables this

@GodEmperorDune I mean, in this case, the comparison gets more and more fitting by the day. Denouncing media, racist policies, constant lies, concentration camps,... At this point the only thing missing is an invasion of Poland

@Unionhawk it's harder to reframe "separating children from adults and locking them up is bad and we have to stop it"

3:02 PM
Although I think in this case an invasion of Mexico might be more apt

@Nzall What if they send the National Guard into Po(rt)land?
Yes, I know the National Guard is under the direction of the state governor when they're not federalized.

@GodEmperorDune "how do we know they're parents and children"
bam
done
ez
It doesn't matter that the "everyone who crosses with a child is committing human trafficking" line is a fucking lie, that's what they're doing
@Unionhawk here's where you can find your local (publicly known, ICE) detention facility ice.gov/detention-facilities

If you’ve ever suspected that centrist Democrats are only kowtowing to their corporate overlords and torpedoing any minor attempt at left-wing reform as part of a long-term plan to establish one-party communist rule in the US, then Trevor Loudon has a story for you.

Confirmed -- Trump Jr. withdrew from a George P. Bush fundraiser because of the family's criticism of his father. He cautioned George P. that he wouldn't publicly support him if it continued -- the tweet from Jeb about the separation of families was the last straw, I'm told.

@Wipqozn Beautiful

@SaintWacko It actually gets really depressing

@TimStone One thing that amuses me is the "founding fathers must be rolling in their graves" sentiment as if the Alien and Sedition Acts never happened.

4:26 PM
@Wipqozn Ugh, yeah it does

would like to take a moment out of everyone's busy days to report that Admin has, in fact, posted a picture of ICE in a toilet

Can't imagine it'll make much of a difference
The administration isn't respecting human rights anyway

I mean... I guess?
but this just kinda makes it super official
it's just seems like a "we don't respect human rights and we're proud of it" kind of move

At the same time though I'm not sure the "and we're proud of it" part makes it worse

it doesn't make it worse per se, but it shows that it's acceptable to do it
right now we see them not respecting human rights and we go "holy shit, that's not good", but eventually we'll just be like "oh yeah, that's the US for you, lmao"

it's an accurate assessment of where we have been for a while
on immigration, palestine, yemen, torture...
prisons, criminal justice more broadly
this country,,, is not good.

5:26 PM
The State Department's "Family Travel" Q & A is going about as well as you would expect

@Unionhawk Sure, but there's a difference between "The situation has been bad for a while" and "we are officially going to stop trying to improve it"

It's been bad for a while and we haven't been trying to improve it except in narrow circumstances where it's convenient to us and our allies

user15026
@Unionhawk Well, yes, but now the US is being pretty overt with that and not hiding it

user15026
And I think going "hey we want out of this thing that is a big "we are not assholes to people" signpost" while is kinda a symbolic gesture in some senses, it's also very obvious that they don't care to even pretend they care.

@Ash Yeah, at least before it was something that people had to hide and pretend they weren't doing
Now it's being shown from the very top that it's just fine

user15026
5:35 PM
nods

I'm just not convinced that pretending to care about human rights is any better than just not caring

@Unionhawk its a start at least
admitting you have a problem is the first step towards resolving it

Is it though?
In order for it to be a step at all you have to be interested in achieving a resolution
willing to take next steps

i am not saying that resigning from the human rights council is us admitting we have a problem
this admin is not interested in human rights at all

oh no absolutely not
It is true, at least the Obama state department voted abstain on a settlement resolution that one time
@GodEmperorDune I'm confused now though because like, pretending to care isn't admitting you have a problem either
It's definitely not good. But committing human rights violations is worse than not being on the council anymore

5:51 PM
@Unionhawk yes

Jun 15 at 17:37, by Yuuki
Is it possible that the US leaving the Human Rights Council has something to do with someone accidentally abbreviating it in a memo and Trump started screaming “lock her up” non-stop when someone read it to him verbatim?

it's also not the first time we've withdrawn
bush admin did in 2008 after an israel related vote went 154-7
unless I'm parsing this wrong
which I probably am who the fuck wrote this
yeah, I am reading it right
kind of
we held observer status in 2006-2008, withdrew entirely in 2008, and was elected to a seat in 2009

so is this more like the "support NGOs that do birth control" that we stop every republican admin and restart every dem admin?

I don't know
it's hard to say exactly what the motive is here
just that the Bush admin motive was specifically israel
yeah apparently that is also what we're doing here
It just happens to coincide with new focus on the detention of children in this country
and with DPRK talks

i mean the venn diagram between "fuct trump admin policies" and "hypocritical trump admin stances" is a circle so

user15026
6:04 PM
I am not saying that formally withdrawing is going to change anything, it's more a giant signpost of fuck you guys I do what I want

@Ash pretty much this

@Unionhawk Interestingly, if I'm reading right, this 2008 vote was on a very meta rules question, that normally gets passed by unanimous consent. United States, Australia, Canada, Israel, and 3 other nations voted no
@Ash we walked out of a... security? council meeting as soon as the palestinian ambassador started talking one time, we've been signposting this for a while

user15026
Well yes but now it isn't even signposting it's I rented a blimp

user15026
I'm not sure why I feel like this is an argument

I was confused for a second because I thought this was The Bridge and that you had actually rented a blimp somehow

6:16 PM
Trump says Canadians are smuggling US goods into Canada to avoid tariffs: “They buy shoes and they wear ‘em. They scuff ‘em up to make ‘em sound old, or look old.”

I don't know the last like three days have been exhausting, everything has been happening all at the same time by design and it's hard to try and prioritize it

clearly @ash's shoe smuggling ring is how they can afford to rent blimps

when like, multiple things can be important at the same time

That makes sense, we better dispatch President Shoe Whisperer

except there is only so much time in a day to address such things

6:17 PM
My shoes actually don't make a lot of sound to begin with idk what the hell he wears

i want to tie this back to that guy in the middle east that threw his shoe at president bush, then sales of that model of shoe skyrocketed

@TimStone yeah the "sound old" is weird to me

user15026
Also like...that would be the least effective way to smuggle ever. Way too slow :P

@Ash literal sneakernet

@GodEmperorDune It's HP iLO so Proliant, not sure what else that runs on
Cornyn says they will try to move a bill on family separation as soon as this week
Looks like he's working with Cruz instead of just making whatever changes to the Feinstein bill

(the cruz bill, for context, specifies holding asylum seekers as family units in these border facilities for 14 days, speeding up the asylum process, and immediately deporting anyone denied asylum)
(something along those lines)
(It is unclear to me if they are trying to go for reducing the "children must be held in the least restrictive detention possible" standard as well)

6:26 PM
Oh my fucking god
He hugged a flag again

yeah

President Trump: "So, we have a House that’s getting ready to finalize an immigration package that they’re going to brief me on later, and then I’m gonna make changes to it." Full video: https://cs.pn/2JOJLps https://t.co/MZRe2PqldZ
The Presidency is the third chamber of Congress now, apparently
But yeah the Cruz bill seems pretty cruel still but just our standard level of cruel instead of unusually cruel so I guess that's an improvement?
I'd have to believe Democrats would push something more substantial to get my hopes up any higher and they won't so 🤷

When I asked why, the union responded, "So we can hire their organizers as our organizers, because they will be considered rank and file."
(UAW has a strict policy of not hiring from outside)
amazing
like I'm not going to argue with the original intent of the rule, nor am I going to argue that organizing more workers is bad, but, the two things coming together is just, spectacular

Back to fuct threads about trump
A quick thread on the historical context for Donald Trump's use of children as bargaining chips -- because it's not new, and the fact that he appears to be unfazed by the backlash might be because he's used the tactic against his own family

@TimStone i feel they could've put more puns in there but sure

the president seems to have gotten off the wrong foot here

@quartata exactly
this should be well tread territory

@KevinvanderVelden ^ for your appreciation

@TimStone does he even know how tariffs work
(trump)

9:17 PM
@quartata Since trade wars are so easy to win, I think it's safe to say he expected to have this whole thing laced up with a bow by now.

for all we know trade wars might be easy to win and he's just this bad

But really the whole experience has been one that seems to have improper cushioning - millions on both sides are paying more with little accomplished.
Hopefully both sides can air things out and get rid of the stink of the situation.
This clearly isn't a situation where either side is willing to budge a foot.
It might help if Trump's advisors could have him put a sock in it.
The way things are going now, we're toeing the line of madness.

@quartata You know he doesn't and also doesn't care

To rebuild trust, you need to walk the walk and show you think of other countries as partners.
Okay I'm done.... with this heel turn.

@TimStone I know I would have hoped someone would have explained it by now

9:25 PM
They probably have but he also doesn't know what listening is
Akon set to launch cryptocurrency called Akoin https://pge.sx/2K0M4F9

12 Republican Senators sign letter calling for immediate end to family separation/"zero tolerance" policy while Congress seeks solution: HATCH MCCAIN ROBERTS COLLINS MURKOWSKI CORKER ALEXANDER BOOZMAN HELLER GARDNER LANKFORD CASSIDY

@quartata but mah riderzzzzzzz

They're trying to give Trump an out because they still don't realise he's too dumb to take it

9:32 PM
lmao

also while it angers me that republicans in congress have swallowed the "its a law on the books" lie, if that's what it takes to stop this fuct stuff, fine

Halting the policy via executive action while Congress figures it out puts the actual "Doing Something" burden on Congress like he keeps claiming is the case, so like it should be an easy sell
Stephen Miller hisses from a corner: NO SALE, NO SALE

A quick thread on the historical context for Donald Trump's use of children as bargaining chips -- because it's not new, and the fact that he appears to be unfazed by the backlash might be because he's used the tactic against his own family

Oh yeah I forgot about that

@quartata more like "leveraging others' empathy as weakness, fuck yeah"

"I can’t in good conscience send Delawareans to help with that mission": Two more governors pull National Guard troops from the border over family separation policy. https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/6/19/1773387/-Two-more-governors-pull-National-Guard-troops-from-the-border-over-family-separation-policy #KeepFamiliesTogether #StopSeparatingFamilies

@TimStone what are all these non border states sending national guard troops to the border?

@GodEmperorDune Trump asked for that, I think

$$$
I'm not sure on the specifics but I'm pretty sure it entails funding
Note that national guard members can't perform CBP actions like, say, arresting illegal immigrants, so the practical implication is actually just dumb
Trump heading to CapHill for immigration mtg w/Adviser Miller & DHS Sec Nielsen
Aww yes, things are about to get dumb as hell
Over the past 24 hours I've heard from several sources that Defense Secretary Mattis has been iced out by POTUS and has increasingly become isolated.

@TimStone that would be a pretty bad sign, if true

9:47 PM
@TimStone how many smirnoff ices has he had?
@somospostpc I couldn’t even keep the US in the Paris Accord, but if there is some way for me to help these kids I will do so
our problems are solved, y'all

Withdrawing from the UN Commission on Human Rights, and separating children from their parents at the border is rightly taking much of our attention. But, I also want to point out that a lot of America is currently on literal fire right now. /1
'MURICA, F…🔥🔥🔥

@TimStone And if we're not on fire, we're recovering from being Atlantis for a few weeks.

LISTEN: As Pres Trump’s entourage entered Speaker Ryan’s office in the Capitol, someone on the other side of the Capitol rotunda yelled: “Mr. President, F—k you!!” (He entered about 15 seconds later): https://t.co/KHp16LYMoF
