10:07 PM
@GodEmperorDune It makes sense. "Defending" ones borders isn't a job that should fall solely on the hands of border states. and I use double quotes around defending for...well, obvious reasons... because Trump is concerned with trying to "defend" the border from children

@Wipqozn the national guard is broken up by state so they can respond to issues in the local state, not as an in-country police force
not sure about y'all but we had bad experiences with militaries policing us back when we were colonies

@GodEmperorDune Yes exactly.

WAit, the border is guarded by policemen?

@Wipqozn yes, ICE and border patrol are a specific branch of law enforcement
which is not part of the military at all

@GodEmperorDune huh ,I always assumed it was a branch of the military
Since it had to do with international relations essentially

10:10 PM
because military is for going overseas and killing dudes, not enforcing laws

This isn't about enforcing laws though, it's about preventing folks from illegally entering the country
And yeah I did just use the word illegal, but yeah

@Wipqozn which is a legal matter
technically a civil offense, not even a criminal one

The posse comitatus restrictions are why the national guard can't actually do anything except like, build roads there and look menacing

also coming up to the border and going "i want asylum, gangs in my neighborhood want to kill me and my family" is fully legal

the ironic part is that the military has probably stricter rules of engagement than the police seems to have in the US

10:13 PM
however trump admin seems to be ignoring that distinction and throwing everyone into detention centers

@GodEmperorDune Sure, but that's different than trying to cross illegally, for whatever purpose
@GodEmperorDune wait, actually? All this time I thought this was just for folks were crossed illegally
I assumed folks who applied for asylum before crossing weren't part of this

@Wipqozn the official ports of entry are sometimes closed according to reports, so they just tell people to come back later

@Wipqozn they are saying that the asylum claims are invalid (without actually going through the process to check validity in court), and therefore everyone is illegal

and there are some international agreements that say that declaring asylum after entering is a valid way to do this, and should not be punished in general

@MadScientist yeah not trying to dispute that
I just don't see the problem with having a branch of the military patroling the borders

10:16 PM
@Wipqozn also realize that the trump admin is not big on nuance

Although given this is Trumptopia I'm talking about, I'm sure they're doing more than that

@Wipqozn military is trained to fight wars, not enforce laws

the military is for enemies, you generally don't want to turn it against your own people. And guarding the border is not really like standing on the wall and looking on another country

A military is used for far more than just shooting people @GodEmperorDune @MadScientist
AT least a well rounded one is
The Canadian military has policies in place for assisting in relief efforts and disaster assitasnce for other countries

@Wipqozn we're talking about the US national guard though, not the canadian military

10:22 PM
@Wipqozn they generally have quite a lot of applicable training, yes. But it's a very common safeguard in democracies to prevent the military from being used inside the country

@GodEmperorDune Okay but I just assumed they recieved relevant training outside of "point at this and shoot"

national guard can do shooting but they are usually trained for natural disaster response

but maybe it's just because I'm so used to how the Canadian military is used

there is certainly training for similar stuff, e.g. I remember training for watch duties, where shooting people is usually not the desired action

The canadian miliatry does a lot of non-shoot things: forces.gc.ca/en/operations/types-operations.page

10:24 PM
regular US military is shooting and patrolling and doing "peacekeeping" (i.e. warfighting)

The USA military, and by extension the national guard, must do the same

i don't know how to ask nicely to stop canadasplaining the US military to me

I think I'm just explaining why I don't think having the national guard doing non-"kil the thing" missions is strange

The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) signed on June 18, 1878 by President Rutherford B. Hayes. The purpose of the act – in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807 – is to limit the powers of the federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States. It was passed as an amendment to an army appropriation bill following the end of Reconstruction, and was subsequently updated in 1956 and 1981. The act only specifically applies to the United States Army and, as amended in 1956, the...

Okay well if the US military sole purpose really is just "Shoot the thing" that's pretty fucked up as far as I'm concerned, especially considering how much of the US budget seems to go into it
I mean I can understand historical reasons for it and what not, but I just don't think a military sole purpose should be for war, and their training should be much broader than that.

10:28 PM
@GodEmperorDune oh cool
what a time to be alive

but yeah, given that's not how the US military functions, I get why you don't want them patroling the borders

and a socialist knocking on doors in this state
lol

@GodEmperorDune And to be clear, and this is the last I'll say since you obviously want me to stop, I wasn't trying to explain the US militry to you but explain "This is how a military should work." I was just drawing on my knowledge of the Canadian military since I'm more familiar with it. I just assumed the US military was similiar.

@Wipqozn sure, i agree with you in that's what a military should do

@GodEmperorDune Okay, and given what the US military is intended for, I agree they shouldn't be patrolling the borders. I just didn't realize our countries militaries were used so drastically differently.

10:35 PM
right

10:54 PM
US Capitol Police on lookout for young white woman who yelled “Mr. President, f— you!”
unfortunately i'm not a white woman but i would love to do that

11:07 PM
This bill takes the wrong approach by failing to cut enforcement and detention spending, funding more Border Patrol agents, and paying a ransom for Trump's wall obsession — all after he created a humanitarian crisis by separating families. https://twitter.com/leedsgarcia/status/1009126948948381698
dammit congress

11:23 PM
Congress, stop negotiating with terrorists

What Trump said about @IvankaTrump in the Hill meeting - that she came to him and said "Daddy, what are we doing about this?" Trump said it's a "tough issue," pivoted to something else.
Y'all grown ass people 🤔

@GodEmperorDune why? isn't the clear example of free speech being that you can tell the president to of fuck himself and you don't get thrown in jail for it?

@Memor-X you'd think so
@TimStone :////////////////////////////

lmao daddy

anti nepotism rules keep this kind of creepy stuff away

11:40 PM
I was just on @foxnews opposite Corey Lewandowski to discuss the Trump family separation policy. When I relayed the story about a ten year old girl with Down Syndrome being taken from her mother, he responded with “womp womp” Video coming

@TimStone goddamn what a garbage human

Yeeep
(who CNN decided to pay for a while 🤷)

also i somehow missed this, so a big fuck you to the NY FBI office
According to the testimony of the Attorney General in the IG report, nine days before the election she and the FBI Director discussed how a “deep and visceral hatred of Secretary Clinton” by a cadre of senior NY FBI agents “has put us where we are today” w/r/t the Weiner laptop.
i mean i remember reading about NY office leaks being why comey did the letter, but now its official

That's why Giuliani wanted them running the show the other day

we have a clearer plan on the medicaid bullshit

11:50 PM
@TimStone here’s video
.@Zac_Petkanas says on Fox News a 10-year-old girl with Down Syndrome was separated from her mother at the border. Corey Lewandowski responds: "Womp womp." https://t.co/cZMXWmwbjw
he didn't even really do the sound properly

this is all barely covered locally

I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

US quits 'biased' UN human rights council - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/44537372

so, medium term goal is getting people to tell their stories, build a piece ourselves, but also get people to call up like "why the fuck are you people not covering this, this is rolling out next week"

@Wipqozn lol share text

@GodEmperorDune I hate it

11:52 PM
@Unionhawk too many horrific issues in too short a time

Whenever you see that you know I'm on my phone

@Wipqozn RIP gnomephone

@GodEmperorDune yeah but like, a quarter of the state is affected
polls are about to close in DC

@Unionhawk i hope the astroturfers lost

I hope it was the biggest landslide to ever landslide
