I think a lot of that is legend. However, for hundreds of years the Romanian countries (the country was split in 3) alternated between control of the Turks, Austro-Hungarians, etc.
Some nobles were more interested in handing control to one group over another, and most of our kings only governed with the backing of one of the surrounding empires.
When Tepes came to power he killed his brother, who was a Turkish appointee, then slaughtered the nobles who had backed him. He himself was backed by the Austro-Hungarians, who would rather that the Turks were fought in Romania, than around Vienna…
