8:01 PM
The fact that it got that bad is indicative that a good chunk of users aren't aware of how this SE should be used.

@StevenGoodman that's largely due to the community being new. We get those at TWP as well, but we've just gotten real good at nuking them. Most problem posts get attention in chat, and the community springs into action. That's how it worked here today, and once there's a better rhythm, those comments will get deleted before they get votes
I think that the community did very well today.

How do other communities handle this outside of just having a fast response time?

@StevenGoodman well, the fast response time makes it no fun for anyone wanting to cause mischief. Then, you don't get the mischief. It's a positive feedback loop.
Kill the nasty comments, then people don't get upset and respond in kind.
In other words, start with a good and fast response time, and eventually people "get it" and you don't need the response time after a fashion.
Also, you go through periods where people test the system to see if it's still able to thwart them. Then you respond, they learn that everything is still in place, and calm prevails.

@RichardU Makes sense. It's just a bit frustrating. Especially when some of the comments/answers aren't removed in the end due to having enough "truth" in them to get by.

I think that shog slapping the negative answers with the "rude" label and them getting a 100 pt rep hit will resonate as well.
@StevenGoodman in that case, take it to Meta and ask why they weren't deleted when they were obviously disruptive
Oh no. I think I'm "adulting" how did that happen?

8:06 PM
@RichardU I'll do that next time it comes up. Also, what happens when the high rep users revolt and start sacrificing their rep to make rude comments? What then?
@RichardU With 6.3k rep you could make 63 rude comments!

@StevenGoodman High rep users aren't immune from getting vacations. In TWP, one of the top 10 users of all time has gotten several suspensions.
Believe me, the mods and staff don't want to deal with jerks. I saw Shog blast one into oblivion due to some rude comments in chat once. SE doesn't put up with this nonsense.

@RichardU Mostly joking here. Haven't been around the internals of most exchanges enough to know what actually goes on behind the scenes, but it's good to know those scary 10k goliaths get taken down sometimes.

@StevenGoodman Look at my rep at The Workplace. :D The one who got slapped down had a rep of over 70K. SE doesn't put up with rudeness, no matter how high rep you are.
If enough of your answers or comments get flagged, you can expect a nice chat from the moderators telling you to behave. That isn't sarcasm either. I had one once, and they were very polite. I misunderstood a bit, and they set me straight, and no further problems.
BUT...
If you insist on being rude after the mods chat with you... you're gone.
one fellow got a 1 year ban.

Well, your account won't get nuked (probably).

@Mithrandir Monica was very nice, and that was about 2 years ago.

8:12 PM
You could get your account suspended for 20 years network-wide, but it takes a lot to get to that point.

@Mithrandir the one I saw get suspended for a year did quite a bit.

@Mithrandir Has that one happened before?

yep
although normally it's 10 years

@Mithrandir was it criminal behavior that earned it?

Nope.
Criminal behavior will get you reported to the appropriate authorities, not suspended.

8:15 PM
@Mithrandir It must have been something that was cruel beyond measure then.

Downvote market manipulation maybe? Insider downvote trading?

(Pssst. They were unsuspended and are now a mod on another site.)

@StevenGoodman I know that serial down-voting or up-voting will earn you a suspensions.

@RichardU I'm talking about having thousands of bot accounts and manipulating the rep market in your favor. He who controls the rep, controls the exchange.

I'm very intrigued at the thought of someone having a 20 year suspension reversed and then becoming a mod somewhere

8:18 PM
There isn't much revenge down-voting. If a high-rep user tried to squash someone with low-rep, the alarm bells would go off, the votes would be investigated, the rep is reversed and the offender is suspended.
@StevenGoodman any attempted bot manipulation would get caught too, plus remember, you need initial rep to up-vote

@Rainbacon In their own words:
> I was a very active member on several sites, some in beta and I pretty much stressed and traumatised the other members with my rantings and ravings. I would regularly rage quit. I was argumentative and over sensitive to a fault. I used to discuss things with Tim Post, who was most patient with me. The site was very forgiving, until they realised, at that time, my behaviour was never going to change.
Although my contributions in terms of questions and answers, were by and large, positive, my conduct within the community was disruptive and I could be abusive.

No but imagine thousands of bots using advanced AI writing and answering realistic questions... slowly accumulating rep... slowly taking over SE...

@Mithrandir That's quite interesting

@StevenGoodman well, I'd say that I'd certainly admire the ingenuity of such a person, but they'd have to be independently wealthy to pull that off.
@Mithrandir well, we know it wasn't an American now :D

well, it's relatively easy to find

8:21 PM
@Mithrandir ah, I'm not one to stir up old drama.... at SE. SE is under my protection. I save my trolling for other sites.

8:36 PM
@Mithrandir that 20-year-ban person is now a mod? Nice story ...
as far as I know, there's only one person that ever got that
can you link me to that comment?

Nope. If you're determined enough, you can find it on your own ;)

@D.Hutchinson it's not hard to find

Oo ... ok, cool

It's a great post too, I highly recommend it

yeah, I bet :)

8:39 PM
The whole post, not just that user's answer.

I see :)
I'll try and find it after an early dinner ...
@RichardU are you around?
@Rainbacon can you tell me which site? there's like 100 SE sites :(
I would really love to read that post - it sounds like a great ending
and it's posted - so, public information :)

@D.Hutchinson copy post the entire text that @Mithrandir sent :)
And google it

Oo thanks @CrazyCucumber!
:)
I've hit the rep cap several times now ... it feels weird ... and less satisfying each time I hit it ...
because ...

@D.Hutchinson I''m back

I find myself just ... waiting for rep to accrue, rather than continuing to post the best content that I can ... in the form of questions or answers ...

8:52 PM
@D.Hutchinson I hit the rep-cap enough times to earn "Legendary" on TWP.

@D.Hutchinson But you haven't gotten the gold badge for it yet

@Rainbacon it is a privilege held by few.

@Rainbacon I see ...
@RichardU isn't it sucky to wait around, waiting for rep to accrue?

After you earn the gold badge, it is a let down

knowing that your answer is really popular ...

8:53 PM
@D.Hutchinson It's funny when you wake up to a rep-cap though.

Alright guys, I am out for the day. I will talk to y'all tomorrow

bye @CrazyCucumber :)

@CrazyCucumber g'day. Be well

@RichardU yeah but it acts almost as a deterrent to posting more content ...
that's how it's made me feel, at least ...

@D.Hutchinson I take it as license to post as bluntly as I like, as down-votes aren't going to put a dent in it
but that usually backfires as my more blunt posts are up-voted

8:56 PM
I see ...
@RichardU btw, I pinged you with a workplace question in mind ... but perhaps I'll ping you at the water cooler later?
... I think ... my feeling of the rep-cap acting as a deterrent to posting more content is something that Jeff Atwood had described as being intentional ...

@D.Hutchinson we can pop over there if you like. I've got no problem dealing with it now.

@RichardU ok, thanks - I have to go for now, so I'll ping you later :)

3 messages moved to trash

Has anyone else noticed a dropoff in questions the last few weeks?

9:33 PM
Seeing as 50% of the newest questions page is [on hold], a slowdown might be okay
