I made a comment on one of the answers I was most disappointed with too:

Well, teachers hold a fairly high position in society. That's partly because society is more communalistic versus individualistic - which is more common in places like the US. Due to social conditions, and just the way society is, education is viewed a lot more like a privilege, as opposed to some sort of right (again more common in the US). So to disrespect a teacher would be to abuse a privilege, and to disrespect someone with authority makes it worse. Many universities have policies that reflect that (e.g. be on time or don't come, minimum attendance). — Zizouz212 yesterday

Hmm. Yeah, HNQs tend to attract crap answers - but then again, at least two of the top three candidates in the recent Puzzling election found the site through the HNQ.

Like I said here: Social skills and norms, traditions, values... etc vary so much depending on where you are and the culture of that region. Pakistani social norms will be different from Canadian norms, which themselves will be different from those of South Africa. So, what does that mean? ...

Voting provides the heartbeat of a SE site. It enables users to reach higher privileges and help with the moderation. It provides an incentive for people to create posts. It is the thing that keeps quality on SE sites high - that bad posts get voted down and good posts get voted up.

Which is why the -1 rep for downvoting answers is a bad idea, IMO. Bad answers don't get voted down as much because people don't like losing that one point. It's ridiculous, but it's true. If that didn't exist, then higher quality would be more prevalent.

@HDE226868 The original question was "Are these sentences ok for business?", with the constraint that it needs to be polite, as opposed to 'are these sentences polite', with the constraint that they need to be OK for business which is what setting the title to "Are these polite ways to ask for a quotation agreement?" suggests

I was working with the original title, "Polite ways to ask for quotation agreement". I interpreted that as asking whether or not they were polite.

@Avantgarde Physics! It's a massive field of research with far more interesting/fascinating things than I'll ever be able to cover in my entire lifetime. Also, the stack exchange site receives too many questions for it to be simple to parse the good from the bad without a lot of effort :P

@Mithrandir24601 Oh yes, I agree. There's certainly so many interesting things out there in physics.

I alternately get excited and depressed when I realize how much there is to learn in the world. I'll never get to know even a tiny fraction of it, but I'll always have something new to learn. It's good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
