5:00 PM
Did I tell you guys I dyed my hair green?

@brug I love poofing bad stuff too. But, since I'm usually not around to see the actual "poofing", I just flag and make a "poof" noise in my head :p

that is way cooler than how it actually happens

@ankii you can have hyphens in normal tags, but not question marks, probably follows the same rules here

@Belle Oh, that sounds cool! I always love the idea of dying my hair, but they are very too dark and decolorating them is a nightmare :/

5:01 PM
Here, you can share the satisfaction now :)

@Belle text is still copy-able now.. only the overlay is there
I had copied some posts to Read later

@ankii I know. But it's the proof of the poof!

@Belle \o/ I was just thinking they should add a actual "poof" noise when things disappear just before your eyes x)
Maybe I should ask someone to make a Grease Monkey script for that :p
And the possibility to have also the sound when you flag :p

@EmC what's up with the script you linked in your profile?
It shows pronouns right?

I died my green hair in response to my boss telling my new female colleague that "at least she's not one of those weird girls in IT who dye their hair an unnatural hair colour"

5:04 PM
@Ælis haha that would be awesome. add options for confetti, or a Michael Bay style explosion
@ankii yup! it will show up next to chat profiles if you have it enabled

on site too?

possibly more things in the newer versions, I haven't checked since I first installed..

@EmC Exactly!
@Belle :/ I'm even more glad to hear that you are changing boss soon!

@Ælis I just wish we could poof the more subtly hurtful stuff

@brug Yeah, me too :(

5:07 PM
Like extremely prominent cishet white male former moderators holding up the opinion of another prominent cishet white man as proof that cishet white people shouldn't have to consider the hurt they cause as they walk through life in ignorant bigotry /rant

@brug Yeah, I feel mad every time I see that this ex-mod is still able to post/comment stuff around even after being publicly transphobic!

@Ælis I know. And people upvote the living eff outta him

I don't like the amount of trolls the pronouns-issue attracts. Most of the issues don't personally affect me, but I still care about them. But I don't want to accidentally care about a troll's issue and/or dismiss a genuine issue because I mistake it for a troll.

He is extraordinarilly hurtful

Dear me, just thinking about him makes my teeth grind!

5:11 PM
agreed

@Belle I understand. That's why I feel it's important that people be educated about the subject of discrimination and how it can be sneaky and invisible. Too bad schools don't actually teach you that :/

@Ælis Indeed. Once, not so long ago, I was discriminating a lot. I feel really bad about that, but I'm trying to be better now :)
I still remember calling the first transgender person I met "it" as a 16 year old. It still feels my heart with shame.

heh, whenever people go "but but you need to listen to different opinions!" I think, oh you mean, call my parents? visit home? read my old journals? :P
a lot of the allies I know became that way because they worked really hard to overcome the stuff they're now speaking out against

@Belle I still remember all the hurtful behavior I had when I was in middle school. I wish I had known better. But I'm glad, I do know better today. Though I still find it outrageous to see how hard it can be to self educate yourself when you are willing to because good resources are just hidden in the middle of very bad ones (like white cis men screaming stuff like "THIS IS REVERSE RACISM!!!")
@EmC Yeah, that's what people don't understand. We already know the other opinions!!!

@Ælis That! And the obvious trolls. Like the "drinking milk is racist". No, drinking milk isn't racist. Acting like everyone can drink milk is.

5:23 PM
@Belle x)
Never heard that one before x)

I wish I had known better too

Man, I came in at the right time!

I've never heard that one before either!

Get your sceptism hat on before you go in here: peta.org/blog/cows-milk-perfect-drink-supremacists

ohh is that about how some ethnic groups have much higher rates of lactose intolerance

@EmC Yeah, and then converted into PETA's horrible agenda

5:25 PM
... oh, PETA.
I'd say they've "jumped the shark" but they would probably want me to use a non-animal analogy there ;P

It spouted a lot of anti-left articles like telegraaf.nl/nieuws/2711713/melk-drinken-is-racisme

sigh

@Belle Makes me wonder how much diversity they have on their team (note: I didn't read the article in fun, I'm vegan and I don't really enjoy reading about how animals are mistreated :/ )
In other, nicer, news, a new user just left a very good first answer on my question :) It's right over here

@Ælis The article is basically saying that milk is being used as a symbol of white supremacy (true), so drinking milk makes you a white supremacist. I think that's some kind of logical fallacy.

@Ælis PETA has a history of doing stuff like that.. I remember they ran an ad campaign for "don't purchase fur" but with gory images :/
@Ælis nice :D

5:34 PM
@EmC Yeah, it's how vegan activism usually works. You show horribles pictures/videos and you hope people will react to it and stop eating animals/buying their fur. I understand it to be necessary to "convert" people, but once you are, seeing those pictures/video is a bit too much :/

I really really like the suggestion to use "Is there anything I can pray for?" in that answer. So thoughtful, but so simple. It offers the other person the opportunity to decline gracefully if they do not believe in prayers or whatever.

@Belle Too bad I don't believe in prayers >< It doesn't stop me for "hoping" stuff, though. Maybe I could say instead "is there anything I could hope for you?" but that would probably sound a bit weird ^^'

@Ælis Same, but this one hit home because I recently had an awkward encounter at work with colleagues telling me they'll pray for me. I was like 'sure?'. I didn't believe it would help, but it was nice, but weird.

@Belle Well, it must be nice to see that some people are ready to pray for you :) But I definitively get the awkwardness. Especially since we don't really talk about these subjects in France (no one ever told me they would "pray for me" but many have told me they would "finger cross" for me)
I realize now how weird it is that I don't find "finger-crossing" weird but I do find "prayer" to be x)

Perhaps it depends on the region. I live in a region where there are a lot of religious people. They go to church every Sunday etc.
One colleague sends me quotes from the bible every day, because he thinks I'm nice. It's kind of endearing.

5:44 PM
@Belle Oo

The sum of living in the bible belt and working for a company with an average age of 50

@Belle I would not find that endearing
I am very grateful I don't live in the bible belt

@Belle No one, would ever do that in France. I'm pretty sure it would be seen as unprofessional. In France, everyone is supposed to act like they have no religion, even if they do

@Ælis In the bible belt it is almost unprofessional not to do that.
You wouldn't want your coworkers to question your devotion

We definitively don't live in the same country ^^

5:48 PM
Sadly no

Luckily my neighbourhood is a new one. It's not overly religious. It's okay to mow your grass on Sunday.

@Belle x)
@brug I don't want to discourage you, but French is far from being perfect either. I do believe that Macron (the president) is a little better than Trump. But it doesn't stop him from being pretty bad (like despising everyone that isn't rich and healthy)

@brug I... fully understand the need to rant, and the hurt feelings... but there's a lot of language in there that's not so nice either (cis, cishet, white man, ignorant bigotry... they're all pretty easily imagined as being spat at you by an angry faced person). I'm going to unstar it from the sidebar for that reason.
(And that's not really a message for @brug, as they can't star their own)

@Belle That seems like the sort of pettiness that I would go for. :D

I found this joke on reddit today. I think you guys might appreciate it: reddit.com/r/Jokes/comments/dhowm9/…

5:53 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'd be fine with you removing it entirely. It isn't very nice. And we don't need to pollute this space with the drama for MSE. Thank you for letting me rant. The room was supportive. Let's move on now.

@brug I actually wanted to leave it for that reason, the room handled it very nicely :) And I don't want you to feel like you can't vent anywhere :)
I just ask we keep the starboard at least very clean for people who aren't regulars here, so they won't as easily be drawn into such vents :)

@Belle ohh nice. I worked with a woman who got her septum pierced in response to the boss telling another woman that she had to remove her septum piercing because he didn't like them. (Unfortunately both of them lost their jobs within a month)
@Tinkeringbell Okay. Thank you either way

@brug :o that's quite a response
also I strongly dislike needles which makes it seem even more extreme :P

That... sounds illegal.

It's pretty common in America. Especially among the working class. It's not illegal. At will employment is pretty broad.
Very few things are protected and even then proving a discrimination case is extremely difficult
gtg get my daughter from school. bbiab.

5:58 PM
Do people see "cis" or "cishet" as pejorative?
I've observed people suggest as much maybe once or twice online and it confuses me

@TheTinyMan There's a pretty long list of Google results for 'cis pejorative'... especially in combination with a vent/rant, it will give off that impression to people who want to see it that way :)

it's just a descriptive term.. the only times I've seen people claim it's pejorative is when - I won't say trolling, but when they are already unhappy with what's being said

I do understand that if we talk about issues involving trans people, it's a good way to distinguish between groups... like neurodiverse and neurotypical are better than 'crazy and normal'... I don't have a good option to offer besides 'if you don't have to mention it, don't'. Like we edited sex/gender into salutation last week ;)

yep, on SE it's either used as a relevant description, or it's not. usually makes things easy ;)

It just means something like non-LGBT right?

6:02 PM
grunts in dissatisfaction
Thank you for the answer Tink :-P

@Belle "cis" = cisgender (aka not trans / nonbinary), and "het" = heterosexual

@Belle cis is unrelated to at least three of those letters, I think?

@Tinkeringbell but the het part is, right?

on a sidenote, I just cast my first close vote, and it closed the question instantly. (I am not being insensitive to ongoing topic)
croc het @Tinkeringbell crochet would never be the same now xd.

@ankii don't go on a power trip, now ;)

6:04 PM
haha.. I can try to control the urge and raise for attention ;p

@Belle Yeah, "het" basically means "straight"

@ankii Gold badge?

did I forget to mention, it was AD, 3k rep

Or just the 5th vote in line?

5th vote , macOS gold is with only 11 people.. almost all above 40k

6:06 PM
It's weird, I kind of identify as cishet, but I'm not actualy straight. I'm bi. But I've been in 'straight' relationships for 10 years, so I'm a bit afraid to say "I'm LGBT too!"

@Belle Yeah, it's a weird term for me to see applied to me too. I never really had any serious relationships, so how would I know? How would the other person know better than I know then?

I guess it's mostly for yourself. I finally rent a place from a woningcorporatie, so I'm allowed to do things to the exterior. I'm going to put a flag pole above the door and have a rainbow flag out all June next year :)

@Imus you around?

@EmC This one I finished yesterday. It's part of a pentaptych

6:24 PM
@Belle Ehhh. I identify as agender and I'm not completely straight but I almost consider myself cishet, too. I mean, I don't feel like LGBT fits much better than cis at least?

@Belle wow! that's very different than I had guessed it would look, almost looks like a cross-stitch

@Belle I'm in a similar situation (pansexual but most of my last relationships were with men), and I see why you could feel scared to publicly identify as such. From my experience - if that's what feels right, then please do so! Technically, your situation makes you part of the LGBT community, but if you don't relate to it, don't bother.
There'll always be people angry at you for whatever it is you identify to. They don't matter. What matters is how you feel. And that you're loved for who you are. And you know what you are? You're great! I'm glad you're back.
3

@avazula <3

<3

I didn't know about pansexuality. I guess that's what I am. Learned something new today :D

6:31 PM
:D

I dated a trans person in high school. My parents didn't know we were dating, but they didn't approve of him being trans in the first place. They called him "her" and said the woman to date "her" would have to be very confused.

@Belle :'( <3

@Belle I know the feeling. I've been married for 14 years. So the world thinks I'm a cishet man. Turns out I'm none of those things...

blegh

I also identify as pan. but that is another story

6:38 PM
@brug must be confusing after so many years

@Belle More like... No longer confusing after so many years

:D

@brug Oh that's better :D

@brug \o/

Fortunately my SO is unbelievably supportive. And she's bi. So score...

6:40 PM
Oh that's good :)

@brug I was wondering how you'd solve that, but was afraid to ask... That explains though, I'm glad it works out so well!

@Tinkeringbell Yes I am super fortunate. Most people aren't so lucky. I've heard a lot of stories. Not to mention the divorce rate for transitioning trans people is 70%

@brug I was going to say that I had heard bad stories, but it seems like you did too. So, just yay for you to have such a wonderful SO!

@brug Well... it kinda makes sense if both people thought they were hetero before they married? At least to me. At some point you're going to reach a point where your transitioning partner is just no longer sexually attractive to you, as much as you might love the person....

That's true. But some of the stories are very ugly

6:43 PM
Yeah, I can imagine it can be a lot worse!
(I'm not really in the mood for those stories, so please just leave things up to imagination?)

agreed

I just started working on the next one (@EmC)

@Belle Nice! My aunt and her daughters used to do these too... to the point where they couldn't talk about anything else besides the cheap diamond paintings they bought on AliExpress each time you met them :P I'm kinda glad they're not that much into it anymore :P
Yours looks like it's going to be massive!
Is it hard to stick those in just the right place?

It's not that difficult, it's actually quite relaxing. I'm in a facebook group where people always talk about the ones you can buy in a shop called Action. It's a shop that could be Aliexpress's Dutch storefront.

6:55 PM
@Belle I know Action! I like getting craft supplies there, and the pillows (makes good crochet stuffing)! I didn't know they also sold diamond paintings...

I like my stuff decent quality tbh. I also knit. I can get really frustrated when someone tells me to just buy "wool" at Action. It's not even wool :\

I used to be on several craft groups on Facebook, that also talked a lot about what was on sale there each week and then all those ladies would comment either 'Oh, I went and everything was gone :(' or 'Look at my super big haul!'
@Belle True. I don't like acrylics either ;)

@Tinkeringbell Their pillows are great! I also get car stuff from Action. Don't tell anyone that ._.

Action sometimes has cotton, but ... if you want cheap cotton, go to Boekenvoordeel. They have 3 balls (50gr) for 5 euros. Always!
And it's pretty, holds up well, doesn't unravel or split....
@Belle Hahaha I don't have a car, but I've definitely gotten bike parts there multiple times ;)

I had a yarn shop just down the street when I still lived in Vlissingen which sold cotton for 1.75, which was really nice. She went out of business after I moved away though :( may or may not be related.

7:00 PM
Hahaha definitely related! :P The yarn shop here in town is still open, but they charge 2.50 a ball (phildar). I do go there when I don't feel like going to the city for a few balls of yarn though, and to support the local business.

I got ten balls of Lamada Merida for like 45 euro in her sale. merino/silk blend

I once had a mochila bag I crocheted displayed in their shop window for a few weeks :D
@Belle Oooh! that sounds so soft and nice!

Q: What Can We Ask Answerers to Change About Their Answers, and What Should We Do If They Refuse?

Upper_CaseThis question occurred to me when looking at one of the answers on this question. The asker had a complaint about some specific predictions the answerer had made about the likely outcome of following their advice. The asker felt uncomfortable about some perceived implications of those prediction...

I should've known... @Upper_Case only joins chat when there's a meta post coming! :P

@Tinkeringbell It it <3 I'm turning it into a sweater :D
Hi @Upper_Case
I thought my phone was buzzing but it was just my cat

7:05 PM
@Belle A picture or fake (what do you mean "this is just an excuse for you to see a cat pic?")

He's hiding behidn my Dorito's

Awww <3
@Belle What's his name?

Lewis

Is that a bell?

@ankii Yeah. He eats all the neibhourhood birds if he doesn't wear it

7:08 PM
rats shouldn't know that he's coming ;p
oh well now my comment looks awkward

xD sneaky edit
Even with the bell he eats quite a few neighbourhood birds

@Ælis any idea which posts qualify for feature on site meta?
@Belle ohh keep multiple bells xd

@upper awesome question. Thanks for bringing it to meta where the conversation belongs. I think that's an important discussion that we haven't had yet.

@ankii Mostly, it's up to the mods ^^ (since they are the only ones who can add the "feature" tag). But I remember the sandbox and some of our faq question being featured from time to time, so if it's faq or a big change, then it's probably a good candidate for feature

oh didn't mean this one scohe refers to, but some questions on AD meta have votes only from mods who I think somehow are notified of meta questions(someone said that some day)
so they're not hot enough and are awaiting consensus which is never going to come.

7:15 PM
@ankii "use the beautify feature for including question title" xD

Yes, mods get a notification for every new per-site-meta question.

@ankii you could try raising a custom mod flag and ask them to feature it

@ankii ^ that

@Ælis that's what SE chose.. I'd call it [ don't annoy me with hover tooltips or clicks ]

Off topic but questions in camel case make me feel wave-y. I can't read them in my head properly. My head-voice reads them like a bad electronic voice.

7:15 PM
@user58 dang. Is there any way for a regular user to subscribe to that? :p

@scohe001 Yes, set up an RSS feed. ;)

@scohe001 that's what Introverted Meta Man is for :D

Also does that mean Meta.SE mods get a notification for every question asked?? @tink

There was a script that added it for regular users at some point, but that broke years ago.

@scohe001 Nope :)

7:16 PM
Pshh neither of those are as fun as a little red 1 :(

Meta SE is technically more of a main site, without a meta site :P

@scohe001 Just leave the meta page always open and you will have a nice "(1)" every time a new question is ask :p

@Tinkeringbell such a peaceful feature

That's also why it has rep.

@scohe001 That's not how it shows up for mods either... it makes the diamond dropdown blue.

7:17 PM
@Ælis put it in pinned tabs.

@Tinkeringbell ahh I've always wondered. I figured it could be a meta site with no main or vice versa. Guess it's a glass half full situation
@user58 oh well see I didn't even realize y'all had a diamond dropdown so this is news to me

It's called the "moderator inbox".

@scohe001 It basically works as a main site. For example, mods can't suspend users on a meta site either, and we can definitely suspend people on MSE :P

@Belle Yeah, I do have the same issue :/

Then again we can't 'feature' questions on main sites, and we can do that on MSE
Or perhaps if we'd ask, we could get a featured tag on IPS main too :P

7:19 PM
Lol something tells me that'd be a bad idea. HNQ does enough :p

@Tinkeringbell THANK YOU BUT NO THANK YOU!

@Ælis meh, we don't get new meta questions often enough for that to be worth it. I'd be wasting that much screen space for days at a time when there are no new questions :p

@EmC I think I want to ask them to feature things regularly.. keeps flow and people interested out of the main site's decorum. Not that metas are a place for off-topic discussions but definitely an escape. Some questions are about tag separations, one is about editing guidelines which is applicable to a wider audience of editors who sometimes leave troubling things in posts.
you people are fast typists.

@scohe001 We could replace HNQ with [featured] perhaps, like they did with Hot Meta Posts on MSO?

7:21 PM
@ankii this sounds like a discussion you might want to raise on their meta ;) "how do we encourage more people to visit meta" or something

@Tinkeringbell Ooh now that I could get behind. Although people would definitely be calling out "favoritism" if anyone in this room got one (even though ppl in here hit HNQ all the time--looking at you @Ælis -.-) . There's really no good solution :/
@user58 ooh snazzy. Maybe someday I'll see one in the wild

@scohe001 It's why I kinda was hesitant about the 'take a question out of HNQ' option too. I didn't really want the responsibility to decide who was allowed to stay in and who went out! But in the end, we've only used it a few times, and often on request. So it's not too bad ;)

That's a fancy way of saying "I WANT" :P

Though the MSO thing did result in an uptick of comments/flags on MSE asking for featured tags to be added or removed, and we left those to the CMs because we did not want to decide on that ;)

@user58 lol well if/when I ever do run for mod, now I have a slogan: "I WANT" how could I lose?

7:24 PM
A shoo-in.

@scohe001 I do like to take a look at the "HNQ Feed" room sometimes and see how many of the questions down there are mine :p

@Tinkeringbell yea I don't blame you one bit. I wouldn't want to be part of that either. Especially with the MSE/MSO crowd
@Ælis pshh :p

@EmC which again will not see much participation.. I think mike gets a ping now, patrix gets a ping, everybody gets a ping.
in chat

I asked my fiancé if we could have a third cat while he was drunk. He said yes. I have proof. We're having a third cat.

@Belle I don't think that holds up in court, especially as you've now admitted you knew he was drunk at the time! :P

7:33 PM
@Tinkeringbell It holds up in the household rules and that's enough to get a cat :P

we're having plenty of photos for the cat-bot now. Belle should be the database incharge .

@Belle Then by all means, enjoy the third cat! :D
I'm going to call an early night. See you all tomorrow!

Goodnight!

@Tinkeringbell See you :)

@Tinkeringbell That's not the only time I come here!
Though it is a good heuristic
@scohe001 Thanks!

7:38 PM
@Ælis you could edit posts on meta!!
or any 1k for that matter,
why didnt you do the question title thing?

@ankii I did ^^

Oh you also misunderstood..

@ankii I usually don't because if it's "just for me" I don't feel legitimate enough

hi @Upper_Case!

hi @ankii

7:40 PM
> one of the answers on this question.

I'm sorry I don't know how to use beautify, otherwise I would have updated the post

simply put the question link in mark-down and it will bring title automatically ..... or the manual labour
I wish they did it for comments too.. always a choice foe me between good UX and laziness

@ankii There you go :)

happiness 100

Thanks @Ælis!
@ankii I'll use that in the future

7:43 PM
You're welcome ^^

"upvote for saying thanks" - Jeff? ;)
but he isn't here in chat.. so we can use it \o/

@Belle Pop, I finally decided to take a shot with this (hopefully) good answer (even if Lux Claridge one is already great)

8:16 PM
@Belle Looks like you are HNQ (just wanted to warn you)

8:42 PM
@Ælis Uh-oh. Ah well, I'll see in the morning, I'm going to bed in a few.

@Belle Have a good night :)

I wanted to share something here before bed. I've had a new coworker since two months. He's kind of nice. Very open about being autistic. I'm not "out" in the workplace.
Last week we were talking about gatekeeping and I said something like "You've probably experienced quite a bit of gatekeeping, having autism," to him. He responded: "You know it's a joke, right?"
I'm still not sure what to think...

@Belle Oo So he joked about being on the spectrum??? That seems messed up!

@Ælis Yeah... I can understand saying that you're on the spectrum without an official diagnosis. But joking... A few of my colleagues seemed to know it was a joke and think it was funny. Quite a few excused his behavior. I'm not sure if I'm being overly sensitive about it or not.

@Belle Pretty sure you aren't... In any case, I would be pretty upset if on of my coworkers acted like that, making fun of people being on the spectrum :/

8:49 PM
yeah, that sounds extremely insensitive of him at best

I told him about meltdowns afterwards in a one-on-one. How they affected me. How I planned my life around brain.exe crashing once in a while. He seemed sorry.

9:30 PM
It just hit me. Instead of "huh?" I should've made the command for the bot to show the regex tripped "NANI?!?!??!" @Ælis @avazula I missed a golden opportunity :(
