it's not an uncommon term on the internet

at one point I somehow set my phone to open SE links in browser, instead of SE app, which meant I couldn't flag anymore. that was frustrating

at least, not more than "borked" :P

@avazula blocked?

@EmC Should we keep comments to say they DVed while nothing in the answer gets against the site rules/requirements?

@EmC request desktop site > flag

8:00 PM
@avazula Good question.

@ElizB Nope, not that. Let's say the behavior is not what is expected ...

@avazula meh

@avazula you mean like the type of comment that was just posted?

@EmC yes
(Should I bring this to meta? I love meta posting lol)

@avazula oh, like a code bug? something glitchy?

8:02 PM
kiddin
@ElizB Yes, that was the idea :)

@avazula flag away - we have a couple metas on why "I think this answer is bad because X" comments are subject to deletion

@avazula ahhh gotcha

Q: How do you tell an answerer that you think their answer needs work?

HarperToday I saw a weak, but well voted, answer. There were a number of viable, potential answers to the question. So this was not a "how do I drive drunk safely" impossible answer that must be answered "you don't". The answerer thought it was, though, which I think was hasty. The answerer did...

that's certainly weird.

@EmC Alright then. Thanks for sharing

Q: Why were comments pointing out potential bad advice in an answer deleted?

Em CI know I commented on this answer earlier. Part of the answer is advice that I think is not good, so I left a comment saying as much. At least one other user had a concern with the same section of the answer, but provided a different reason. Last I checked, both comments had several upvotes. The ...

^ as you can see I've gotten annoyed by this before too :P

@EmC That's exactly what I think - we specifically came to a "ask for clarifications / suggest improvements" policy. Rules are rules

@EmC May be worthwhile to nudge that user... Fairly certain they've been talked to about that before.

@apaul which one?

@avazula yep I've been converted now, haha. there really are a ton of comments posted here, and saying "your answer is bad" by itself is not constructive. so.. better to just post your own answer that can be voted on.

@avazula *cough* calling out users in public is kinda discouraged

8:07 PM
@EmC yep. The only time I'd "off-topic" comment is when a question needs professional advice or similar. I might say something to express that I share OP's feelings, that I've been there and that you can get help to get away from this
@Mithrandir Isn't nudge a positive verb?

I've used custom flags to alert the mods to a user leaving many chatty comments, although, TBH, I haven't really seen that have much effect.
@avazula Ehh... in this case, I'd consider it more calling out the user

@Mithrandir Ok then, I got it wrong. Sorry :)

nudging can be negative or positive, depends on context

(At least I learn half a dozen new words in this chat everyday :) )

@avazula yeah, I'm generally OK with general pointers like that esp when questions are closed for needing professional help :)

8:11 PM
@EmC Exactly. I think those are helpful when you feel OP might need comfort / consolation, getting their question closed might feel like they're rejected, whereas it's everything but that
Plus they get deleted once the question is closed.

@avazula the participants in this communication medium will gradually increase your vocabulary, indeed - incrementally increasing the complexity in which it is possible for you to communicate

@apaul noted

(that's not as complex as I'd've liked, but I can't think at the moment... i should sleep)

@Mithrandir True - the best thing about it is that it gives the opportunity to speak with both native English speakers and people with excellent English

I'm trying to figure out if you left off a "non" or are making a jab at native speakers :P

8:16 PM
@EmC I'm not sure it's your role but you might wanna look at what's going on below last comment the bot caught
@Mithrandir Nah, I didn't mean to say a joke :p
I meant that there are people who have impressive skills in English, namely the natives and the non natives who yet have an incredible proficiency in speaking English

@avazula hmm I see

@Mithrandir My biggest flaw in English is phrasal verbs, which is why I sometimes have trouble to get exactly what you mean ^^

Nobody ever understands what I say. I mumble too much :P

Stop it, you're making me believe my English is good :p

btw @avazula that definitely is an appropriate sort of thing to flag ;) but I still at work and just poking in while i wait for things to compile and such so maybe another mod will look at it in the meantime

8:22 PM
Impeccable.

@EmC I've made a global flag (I dunno why it works sometimes)

@avazula global flag?

@Mithrandir I flagged in need of mod intervention

@avazula great, thanks :)

my pleasure :)

8:37 PM
Phew. Sent the last draft to my supervisor and co-worker to get a final review first thing tomorrow then to my advisor, then hopefully I'll be done with that! so glad to be done. a 15 minute presentation is next, and i'm not gonna overthink it. should be easy.

.... ouch. Headache. Need to stop working.
Hopping off here. :)

Congrats :)

2 hours later…
11:00 PM
