Q: How can I help a close friend get over me?

FiragaI have this friend, I could easily call her my best friend. We see each other at least twice a week usually, have travelled together etc. About 6 months ago she confessed that she has feelings for me, but I don't feel the same way. I don't have any issues with the fact that she feels that way, a...

does it happen to you, that people you think like you or get along with well, never add you on facebook or keep an online interaction with you, and sometimes, people you think are upset or annoyed with you, are nice on the internet
it's so weird sometimes..

@Rainb but it could be that those people just aren't active on social media. I am one of those. my gf once was a bit mad when she found out my fb says that I'm single, 4 months into the relationship

I used to give them that excuse, then I realized, nah, they did ignore you. which kinda confuses me, they were really nice and energetic.

I then deleted my profile since i am never on fb anyway. I don't want to offend anyone by not accepting friendship request or such things. its better when i dont have a profile altogether

Of course when you never use fb it's fine, but when you continously use it, then you notice stuff

yea probably

7:05 AM
It does make me insecure, a little bit, that people that have nice interactions with me, didn't like my vibe, they're really good at hiding their uncomfortableness, or I'm bad at noticing it.

Yello!

one tends to be another persona when interacting over the internetz. Some people become trolls, some become a bit more desinterested, and others remain as friendly as they are irl

@Cashbee Haha, my bf beats you, 2 years 1/2 and he's still single on fb xD

i try to judge my friends by how they interact with me irl
@avazula :)
hi

Although I still have a fb profile, it's just to benefit from its messaging app. I don't go on fb anymore

7:08 AM
It used to be worse.

I think my cover picture is still some pink cute image with flowers, kitties, and "bs" written in the middle

Sometimes, they accept you the less they know about you.
or that's what I feel sometimes.
If I come up to them upfront, and then say, hey add me on fb, they will do it, but if I know them for some weeks they just kinda refuse or something like that.
facebook relationships are very interesting....

here it is (with some censure of course)

im nice to my colleagues at work but i tend to seperate work from private life. so my interaction pattern changes when i get contacted about private stuff

What is that avazula?

7:13 AM
My cover pic on my fb account

@Rainb those were my two cents on that topic

@Marcus I think that's good to keep some distance indeed

@Marcus yeah, very interesting
Do you guys notice that you don't know how you're being perceived.

@Rainb i do and I don't care :)

@avazula Purple!

7:15 AM
a few months ago one of my colleagues added me via steam but did not talk to me or invite me to play with him. so after i while i removed the contact. it didnt bother him much i think

Yes, it is very important to not care. However sometimes you want to focus on the impression you're giving, not for others, but for yourself, as strange as that sounds.

@Mithrandir Nah, I think you meant "Purpl"
@Marcus I'm curious, how did they get your pseudo?

touché

@avazula another coll that im actually friends with has his contact openly available

@Marcus hello security breach

7:19 AM
I used to go to scouts and we sometimes had events where we dressed up and played some kind of hide and seek in the old city. People may have wondered why I run around dressed as a christmas tree or roger federer or a steamroller, but I was having fun and i didnt care :)

Of course

@avazula guess i'll have to remove that friend too. "sry bro, youre leaking data"

@Marcus "It's not gonna work between us, I prefer GDPR over you"

well, when I walk on the street I start doing crazy stuff
and I don't care about what people think lol

Just getting a second opinion, should this be tagged conflict aversion, just conflicts or both? its a tough one
so its a regular conflict that OP wants to avoid (perfect example of aversion) but he is asking about how to de-escalate it when it happens (perfect example of conflict) they are normally supposed to be mutually exclusive tags :D

7:24 AM
its not aversion because the conflict already arose
its conflict solving

"conflicts" is not an interpersonal skill...

conflict descalation is.

@Mithrandir or in other words conflict-resolution

it was never decided that the tags have to be about the skill. or did we?

7
Q: Can we focus our tags more on the skills encountered in the question?

TinkeringbellSince we're doing tag questions, I put the following idea in chat today: may I throw out the suggestion of no longer tagging based on the problem, but on the skill that the problem is with? It's already got three stars, but that doesn't say much since it can't be downvoted. My proposal:...

Nope

7:27 AM
@Cashbee that was my first instinct but are you sure? they are actually asking about what to do if/when it happens again since its a regular occurance
and from my perspective, an answer with pre-emptive advice would be equally as valid as one giving resolution techniques

@Jesse I think both suits. Aversion is up to OP

@Jesse they ask how to deescalate. you can't deescalate a conflict that has not arisen yet

@Cashbee however, what if you want to empathize?

what do you mean?

@Cashbee I think they only used de-escalate because "what if they can't avoid it"

7:30 AM
@Cashbee If you don't care about what other people think that's okay because you're doing your thing, but you can't really understand their reasons, sometimes you want to help them, or understand them, then it is important for you to know how you're being perceived.

that would be changing the premise of the question.

but I do prefer the conflicts tag to aversion. Gives opportunity to more varied answers

@Cashbee why?

@Jesse do you truly think that many people read the tags?

@Jesse I don't think the decision what conflict tag it has would influence the answers
@Rainb OP is asking how to deescalate an argument. we should not change the question to how to avoid that argument. that is not what op is asking at all

7:33 AM
conflict descalation is hard

@Cashbee I agree o nthat

Friedrich Glasl's model of conflict escalation assists in the analysis of conflicts. Appropriate reactions can be derived from this analysis. The model has nine stages – in contrast to the earlier model of Kurt R. Spillmann, which describes five distinct stages of escalation. These stages are grouped into three levels, which each contain three stages. == Levels == Glasl represents "escalation in his nine stage model not as an ascent to higher and higher stages of escalation, but as a descent to deeper and deeper, more primitive and more inhuman forms of dispute... [which] inevitably leads into...
I think this one explains what to do on each scale

:(

i meant reading the tags :P since you guys said nobody reads tags
just a bit slow at finding the meme
but i do think it would make a difference, not to every answer but some for sure

7:37 AM
just go to war

@Rainb What now? You can't have difference of opinion with someone and still be at peace with them? xD

ahah yeah there are a few other questionable things about those steps

yeah life is not that easy, there are probably a 100 possibilites on each step but the image would be so big that you wouldn't be able to read it
someone should do it anyway

also conflict is not the thing that happens if you don't get mediation.. conflicts are what mediation solves :D

@Rainb do what?

7:41 AM
make a bigger step tree diagram
is what she meant

8:23 AM
i think the chart thinks of peace differently

@Marcus Certainly. I just found it funny. :)

As a german i find that diagram confusing.
The only steps i can relate to are
Industrious peace
....
...
War
old joke but still good

9:03 AM
Wish you'd mentioned that previously as I've already said it. I agree with you that it's probably not going to help the issue, but I disagree that he's not responsible for behaviour that hurts my feelings. It's his prerogative as a free person to do it, but as a friend (and hell, as a decent human being), he's responsible for how his actions affect others. Just as I am with mine. — Ynneadwraith 1 min ago

o/ Friday! Last day of internship! :D hello all. :)

Hi you :)

hey

I guess you're thrilled you reached its end?

Hi. So, since I won't be working 9 to 5 Monday through Friday my patterns of being here are gonna change
not saying i'm leaving but since I am now allowed to sleep in some more I will gladly take advantage

12:57 PM
understandable :)
but sad

Yeah, plus starting classes again and a new internship :)
lots more work coming :P

what will the new internship be about?

@Cashbee becoming the Empress of the world

you need lots of IPS for that ^^
but i see why you have to go through internship first for that

@EmC Yello

@avazula hi!

@avazula I am on board with this!

Health Communications to deaf and hard of hearing people- my main thing right now will be 1. make videos accessible for deaf and hard of hearing folks (Videos are about navigating health care, like insurance, doctors visits, etc) and 2. I'm presenting a workshop targeting health care professionals about interacting with deaf and hard of hearing people/patients in their practice. (dos and don'ts)

And suddenly there was life!

@El'endiaStarman oh gosh. (facepalm) :P
hehehehe

30 min till weekend!

1:00 PM
@avazula i'm flattered that you think of me as such.

@ElizB that sounds perfect for you
you will surely never lose motivation since you will be helping your community

@KasparKjeldsen lucky, I just started my day :P

@Cashbee aherf ... I'd like to discuss that point

@EmC Time-zones are weird

@KasparKjeldsen What time is it in Denmark?

1:04 PM
@Cashbee I'm really excited. It's gonna be stretched over two semesters instead of one.

therefore, I have less hours because i'm halving the time by making it two semesters instead of one. i have 240 hours to satisfy

@KasparKjeldsen You leave early!
Same here, but I still have 3h to go :p

Fridays we usually leave 3:30 pm, unless something special needs getting done. Usual working hours are 8:30 til 4pm.

@avazula IT is the industry of parttimejobs

1:06 PM
37.5 hours is considered full-time here

@Cashbee I have fix hours, 9-6. Can't leave earlier, can't leave later. That's so dumb

@KasparKjeldsen I work the same amount. I guess your lunch pause is way shorter than mine

@KasparKjeldsen noice! how long does it take until i am citizen of denmark?

@Cashbee says the Swiss xD

1:07 PM
30-45 min, depending on the mood for me and my colleagues :)

I should really look into getting a job in Denmark then...

@KasparKjeldsen I wanna work at your place
I could even do C#

Haha, well. We aren't really looking right now, but I'll let you know if something comes up :p

@KasparKjeldsen our full time is 42 hours :(

Get ready to hand over around half of your salary in taxes though ;)

1:10 PM
@Cashbee does that include lunch time?

I calculate my lunch-time into the 37.5 hours

@EmC nope

@Cashbee o:

im working 8.4 hours per day over here

I was under the impression Europeans all had shorter "full-time" work weeks than the US
dang

1:12 PM
Hehe, you can't really compare European countries like that. There are big differences.
@Cashbee You should probably start working on your citizenship now. Depending on where you're from, it could take some time.

@KasparKjeldsen I probably should xD
no I think I am fine here I can't complain
(switzerland)

@KasparKjeldsen right?! I have a lot to learn still :)

Oh, well good news. Unless I'm mistaken you have a deal with the EU in regards to the free movement of labour rules, so you can litterally just go here and start working if you want to.
Only thing you'd be missing out on is voting in the national-election
@EmC Well, yes and no. I'll be honest (I hope there are no Swedish or Norwegian people listening in), but Scandinavian countries are basically the same thing.
I mean, it's various levels of cold, and Sweden has been a lot more on fire this year than the rest of us, but in regards to living year, pay/benefits/politics, it's really not that big a difference.

JAD
@EmC In france full-time is like 35 hours
or something low-end like that
here in NL it's 40 hours, excluding lunch

@JAD Yeah it's supposed to be that much, but it only applies to laborers*

JAD
1:22 PM
ah

My sister lived and worked in Paris for 12 years (came back home to live in Denmark this year), from what I've heard, I don't think she has ever had a work-week of less than 45 hours, so I'd say it varies a lot on what line of work you're in.

@KasparKjeldsen Exactly
I'm supposed to work 37.5 hours. In fact I'm more around 45 (even though I'm technically not allowed to)

I suppose if you average my hours out over a year or so, it will also add up to a whole lot more than 37.5 hours a week. I'm just in a good streak of "nothing is on fire right now", so I get to go home "normal time". There have been 25 hour+ weekends...

@JAD yeah, that's probably what I was thinking of
here is generally 40 hours and unpaid lunch, but if you're not an hourly worker it depends a lot on company culture how much you actually work

I actually didnt get clocked in or out through my internship, because I was unpaid.... :P

1:30 PM
@EmC Where are you from?

2
A: How can I politely reject someone's advances?

zanahoriasHis behavior could be considered sexual harassment, and you have every right to be upset. In my opinion, it's perfectly acceptable for you to be completely up front with him: You are making me uncomfortable, and you need to stop now. I gave you my answer and it's not going to change. Also ...

This answer is a bit problematic. It directly accuses the person the OP is discussing as engaging in sexual harassment. This is terribly bigoted agains people with autism.
You wouldn't say that a deaf person is ignoring you because she can't hear you or a blind person is not paying attention because they cannot see, so why should it be acceptable
to say that a person who cannot read social cues, who is acting without malice, is engaging in sexual harassment? Not even the OP stated that.

@avazula USA

removed my last comment because it was redundant

Final edits received! Working on it! :P Ugh... it's that time of the month again for ladies....

Speaking of working-hours, have a good weekend all! I'm off!

1:33 PM
Enjoy :)

@KasparKjeldsen enjoy!

enjoy your weekend :)

@ElizB I haven't forgotten, but I'm preoccupied with family drama right now, just keeping you posted.

@RichardU I can understand that concern but the way I read it is that "it could be considered sexual harassment." Maybe I can suggest leaving out "sexual" and just call it "may be considered harassment" which would still get the point across. What do you think?
@RichardU Gotcha, totally get it! Do take care of that and thank you for keeping me updated! You're very good at making sure there are less assumptions and more communication. I appreciate it! :)

@ElizB well, given my own literalism, and that being part of the problem you're experiencing, I figured it would only be right to prevent that same situation from reoccurring in a different context

1:39 PM
@RichardU Yeah, I understand that. I really appreciate it. I hope the family drama settles down, and that things work out for the better.

im out as well, have a good one

@ElizB Well, that's why I posted that here instead of going in and editing the person's answer. There was a recent news story of an autistic boy getting two title nine actions filed against him for the grevious act of a fist bump and a selfie.

weeeeeekend

@Marcus enjoy!

@RichardU I read that! that was shocking.
@Marcus enjoy your weekend!

1:42 PM
@ElizB It's hard because when we don't understand social cues or what is or is not appropriate very easily, and the fact that standards are shifting like the sands these days makes it worse. Plus, it seems that we are the only ones it is safe to discriminate against.

@RichardU I see you already commented on that answer, and the answerer made edits as they saw fit. But since they stated in that edit that they believe the behavior is harassment, it's not going to be productive to continue commenting to try and change their mind about that.

Right, I agree with @EmC - I was wondering if it was better to make it "harassment" instead of "sexual harassment"?
I don't disagree that it could be considered harassment, but what kind?

@ElizB well in the workplace at least, "sexual harassment" would definitely include repeatedly telling someone how attractive they are

@EmC which is why I brought it into here, as opposed to either getting myself into an edit war, or causing any disruption.

1:47 PM
@EmC Ahh, yeah. Gotcha. Good point.

@EmC and in the workplace, "reasonable accommodation to persons with disability" also comes into play.

@RichardU well, thanks for that :)

@EmC but in all seriousness. You wouldn't say that a deaf person was ignoring you, when they don't have the capicty to hear, or that someone with Tourette's was being vulgar due to an outburst. Why is it ok to slap labels on autistic people? Why are we held to a different standard than anyone else with disabilities?

there are many paradigms for looking at harassment (in various forms), and among them are the following two:
- What is the person consciously trying to do?
- What effects are the person having? (is it walking and quacking like a form of harassment?)
No single paradigm works all the time. As an example mostly unrelated to this situation, we know one person's "pursuing their target with pickup tactics" is another person's sexual harassment even when the first person doesn't consider it to be that way. This author seems to be coming from this second paradigm in their assessment.

@RichardU Are you saying autistic people don't have the capacity to understand when something is inappropriate to say?

1:52 PM
@EmC Low functioning autistic people do not. And even higher functioning people such as myself may not either.
To this day, yes I am still being told when something is inappropriate, and I am on the higher end.
I've also witnessed an autistic man beating himself up LITERALLY BEATING HIMSELF over doing something inappropriate, after it was explained to him.

@avazula it's some kind of framing challenge

@Cashbee Maybe. Looks ok to me, but it was flagged as VLQ, so I wanted further checking

@EmC Autistic brains have been shown to have a deficiency in what are called "Mirror neurons", that limit our ability to pick up on social cues.
This is an actual, immutable, physiological trait, not just acting inappropriately.
So, again, why is it appropriate to disparage someone over an immutable trait?

JAD
@RichardU look at the hover text: xkcd.com/1758

@JAD can't right now, that site is not whitelisted

1:56 PM
@RichardU From what you're saying, I get that you're trying to achieve is to get the sexual harassment part removed. However, do you agree with what OA is suggesting to do?

JAD
> DEPARTMENT OF NEUROSCIENCE / Motto: "If I hear the phrase 'mirror neurons' I swear to God I will flip this table."

@avazula what is OS suggesting?

@avazula no actually no framing challenge, he misunderstood the question. op had problem with old landlord, not some heating or similar.

@RichardU Owner of Answer?

AH, thanks

JAD
1:58 PM
@EmC Important to remember is that it is a spectrum. It affects different people in wildly different ways. You can't easily apply what you know of one autistic person and assume that others will react/act in the same way.

OP does not mean owner of post, are you aware of that? it seems not

@avazula the advice on what to do is sound. but it's like preparing a seven course meal, and serving it in the lid of a garbage can.
The presentation ruins it

@Cashbee I'm not, indeed. What does it stand for? I was convinced it was owner of post lol

@JAD I'm aware. My brother has Asperger's and I know a number of other people with it as well. I was trying to make sure I understood the line of reasoning.

JAD
alright :)

2:00 PM
@JAD there's been some remarkable progress in stimulating neural activity in autistics.

@avazula I think it's typically "original post/poster".

@avazula Original Poster

@EmC I've dealt with lots of lower functioning autistics, including a friend's daughter, and both of mine are on the spectrum as well.

Oooh. Thanks guys :)

sure np ;)

JAD
2:01 PM
@Cashbee I thought it was overpowered
<- confused all this while :P

@JAD that too

As I said earlier, it's a sore spot with me, which is why I wanted to discuss it in here instead of making a mess of the comments section.

OP's OP is OP!

@RichardU That's nice of you. I'm still trying to figure out what you'd like to achieve, though. I think we all agree in here that autistic spectrum is wide and not that simple to understand. I'm not sure what can be done towards the answer you linked, though.

@El'endiaStarman bahaha punny

2:03 PM
@RichardU Is this really about autism or is it autism combined with your stance on men's rights?

@apaul My daughters are both autistic as well. Does that answer your question. By the way, that was rather unkind to suggest.

@RichardU Don't mean to be unkind, but it muddies the waters quite a bit...

@apaul only if you are not assuming good intentions.

OK back to the answer: it sounds like they are trying to separate the behavior from the person. They were saying the behavior could be considered harassment, and they said this solely so OP would feel better about speaking up about it. Is there a better way they might phrase that?

@EmC Oh, Okay. That makes sense now.
actually, just including the word behavior might do it
@EmC I think that's what I was trying to communicate.

2:08 PM
@EmC That makes sense, yeah.

That's what I meant when I said you wouldn't say a deaf person was ignoring you, et cet. That I felt that intent was being put forth.

I suggested in the comments that the word "sexual" be taken away. Thoughts on that?

I.E. Ignoring someone is intentional, harassing someone is intentional.
@ElizB I think speaking to it as behavior is good.
I know I'm always horrified when someone assume's I have bad intentions when I'm just awkward.

ok, cool! sometimes it takes me a minute to gather my thoughts. maybe the footnote should be moved / integrated into the beginning of the answer instead, would that help?

Thank you @ElizB and @EmC that was it exactly.

JAD
2:11 PM
The answer could focus on how to make it clear to the other guy how is actions are percieved

@EmC yes, that would do it without changing the intention of his answer. It might reverse a few of the down-votes as well.

@RichardU No problem! This is a good discussion space :)

Yes, and I'd like to apologize. I see that I got a bit heated over this one. As you might imagine, I've had some bad experiences over the years, and I'm afraid they've colored my judgment.
But, I guess this room has served it's purpose as it has helped me understand.

Apology accepted! :) Again, this is a great discussion space so thank you for utilizing it the way it should be!

glad we could come to an understanding :) bad timing but I have to run to a quick meeting, if someone else wants to take a stab at editing..?

2:16 PM
Can't edit right now either, sorry. Editing my paper and powerpoint.

I can do it if it's ok?

@avazula better you than me. I don't want my bias to enter into it.

Ok, I'm on it then.
done

Looks good.

@avazula great edit. I reversed my down-vote on the answer.

2:24 PM
@ElizB Thanks. It was not easy to find an appropriate wording :)

@avazula Yeah, i can understand that.

You did most of the work with Richard and EmC though ahah

yeah, guess so :)

2:40 PM
I always like it when a question or answer can get saved rather than down-voted and/or deleted

I agree :)

Ah, good edit :)

I need to stay away from that one....
Bad things happened to people I know

3:02 PM
@avazula great edit, thanks for taking that on :D
finally got the info I needed to make my code compile again too. wins all around :P

@EmC Make compilation great again

yay! Gritting my teeth through this upset crampy stomach and finishing up my edits! :D :P

@ElizB sounds like a good day :)
(expect the stomach ache of course)

@avazula Ehh. It is a good day because I decided it to be a good day, regardless of this starting with a bang plus rainy and stormy outside. XD

Woops, misused lied and laid. Thanks for correcting Liz xD

3:08 PM
@avazula Heh, no problem. that english nuance got me because first i edited it to be lay down but i remembered it was supposed to be laid down
english XD (shakes fist)

it's rather easy to get understood in English. It's tremendously hard to really speak English ^^

@avazula Yes. When i can just sign the word. that's what I do sometimes when my brain just breaks :P

haha

(shrugs)
My co-worker just suggested edits to the map legend.... nooooooo i want to stop editing maps I wanna be done :P
Just a small edit. XD

Hold on. Remember, last day haha

3:19 PM
@avazula Yes. Last day. Really, I am giving a presentation here monday afternoon so that will be my last day.

Oh, okay. Last day of editing then :p

I thought I was done editing the maps so I printed 10 copies each map to hand out during presentation. Now they're moot. that's why I'm slightly annoyed :P but it's an edit for the better XP

@ElizB does your coworker know about that?

@avazula No, haha
that's probably why i'm the only one suffering :P

Maybe they would have not go further with editing requests if they knew it was already settled?

3:25 PM
@avazula Finished the edits. It really is necessary because in government writing, saying "new standards" is not truthful when it is actually "proposed guidelines"

Ha, gotcha.

Yeah..... just annoying little words like that can really get me in trouble.
because NY DOH has not really set any guidelines, I have to really emphasize it is from the EPA, stuff like that.

Healthcare is a complex field

yes indeed.

Alright guys, I'm gonna go. Have a nice weekend everyone! :)

3:35 PM
Enjoy!

Finally finished my paper. Fixed up table of contents, made it nice and neat and pretty :D
huge weight off my shoulders. best feeling ever.

@ElizB congrats :D

@EmC Thanks! just going through the formalities for making sure the school know I've completed it. Mentor and faculty advisor have to sign off on it and stuff

4:29 PM
@ElizB congrats. Must feel great

@DaveG it's been a lot of pressure and it does feel great to have it off. all i need to do is make a 15 minute presentation and give it on monday. That's it

Q: How do I politely say no to a stranger asking to use my phone to make a personal call?

ElizBTL;DR A stranger approached me and asked me if they could use my phone. I didn't want to be rude and say no bluntly, so I wavered, and felt uncomfortable. How do I say no to strangers asking for use of my phone? This is for future reference, this happened a few days ago and I would like to k...

Q: How can I make my girlfriend not to get fixated on false facts and listen for reasons?

FutureEngineerMy girlfriend has a tendency of getting fixated on things she thinks true, when she won't listen to any reasoning and starts arguing with me. We are in our late twenties and we have been together for 8 months. She is a foreign student in my Central European country, we both work as interns. Neith...

is "Break up" an acceptable answer on IPS?

Break up - with an explanation. That would be a frame challenge of sorts

@JonathanReez here's our frame challenge meta post, for reference. We have pretty high standards for them because we want to respect the premise of OP (another meta reference) - so you'd need to provide a strong explanation of why OP can't possibly fix the situation otherwise

Thanks @EmC got a bit lazy here. Afternoon slump is hitting :P

@ElizB haha no worries :) afternoon slump is why I'm poking back in here, I'm procrastinating on an email :P

6:24 PM
@EmC I'm playing around with PowerPoint and nursing my cramping stomach.... being a woman is somewhat tough sometimes.
the big stressful thing is finished so it feels a lot more relaxed

@ElizB at least that part is good!

6:55 PM
@EmC yup!

7:15 PM
um... what is a frame challenge?
@EmC just curious, does your brother have any savant skills?

A frame challenge is where someone basically says "what you want to do is not a good idea, and here's why, and here's what will happen that will be more desirable. If you continue down the path of the original goal, this will happen and you won't like it"
There's at least one or two metas on it
@RichardU What is the more confusing part to you?
There we go.

ugh, I'm sorry I asked. I actually have less of an idea of what it is now than before I read that

Q: What is the difference between not answering a question and posting a frame challenge?

JADWhat is a frame challenge? We require answers to adress the question. However, some questions may warrant answers questioning whether what the OP wants, really is the best choice. These answers are generally of the form: Don't do [x], do [y] instead. This is generally referred to as a fram...

Sorry, that was confusing. Something glitched in the chat here.

What is confusing about it? I can and others can answer more specific questions about frame challenges, if that helps?

@RichardU nope, not savant. I'm pretty sure he's in the gifted range but otherwise "normal" :)

@EmC I have pattern recognition, so it makes me a very fast learner for languages and makes me a good troubleshooter for code.
Can't tie my shoes, or deal with social situations though.
There have been times when I'd gladly have been "brought down to normal" if it meant I wouldn't embarrass myself so often though.... this morning was just a small sample....
{{facepalm}}

7:27 PM
@RichardU he does enjoy learning languages! and practically taught himself coding (proud older sister here - I "helped" but it was really mostly him)

@EmC yeah, I taught myself how to program when I was a kid, that was the only way you could play games back then.
I had an audiocassette drive that I would save my games on
not even a floppy drive

@RichardU heh, generational gap.. I learned so I could make my myspace page look cool :P

I was banned from that stuff by conservative catholic parents.... :P

@EmC yes, and I'm old enough to remember punch cards

seen MySpace of others but never allowed to go on

7:30 PM
I remember taking an HTML class at the library when I was a kid, they gave us floppy drives with clipart on them to take home

not even video games... :(

@ElizB in my day, it was dungeons and dragons that was going to send us all to damnation and hellfire

ahh, hehe

Computer games didn't even have graphics back then

@RichardU my mom was cleaning out the attic several years back and showed me her punch cards from college :D it's mind-boggling how quickly technology has progressed

7:30 PM
Well, ascii, but that didn't count

@EmC oh, cool!

@EmC those gizmodo watches that the kids are wearing are several orders of magnitude then the computers that got us to the moon.
WHICH, I was alive for, btw
now get off my lawn, you noisy kids

hahaha :D

:)
We on the AS seem naturally wired for IT though

hehehe. Yeah, my hubby is in Software engineering and he's really enjoying it.

7:42 PM
There are things I just will never understand, like the frame challenge meta. It looks to me like the two examples are identical, except for a slight change of phraseology which means nothing to me.... very confusing. Computers make sense, people.... not so much
I've come to realize that I do a great deal of scripting.
I've memorized what is expected in social situations, but still have no idea why people do those things

If I were you, I certainly would like to know why does she continue being offensive to you without making guesses. Knowing this is important for further decisions. — rus9384 10 secs ago
