8:00 PM
I see, talking about nerdy things is a lot of fun :)

Well.... I only started being nerdy myself about 2 years ago. I have catching up to do XD
That song is one of the few nerdy moments I had before that..

Better late then never I guess! My nerdy moments where there from the beginning, I just felt attracted to them

@Peter Well... it comes with it's own dilemma's, but I guess I'll manage ;)

I learned that arguing with teachers isn't the best thing to do sometimes :)

I didn't dislike them, just never really realized they were that good XD
@Peter Hmmm... I learned opposite.
If you're always the nice kid, arguing is received very well
:P
(but depends on the way you're arguing I think)

8:05 PM
I think I was nice, the problem was that I started asking things the teacher didn't know anything about. In univeristy it is a lot more appreciated to argue yea :)
I actually was really shy and found someone who was as nerdy as me, after this we were the loudest and asked the most questions and drove some teachers crazy

@Peter Oh, ignorant teachers XD Mom always explained to me (especially primary school) that I was there to learn how to deal with people, not to become smarter XD
@Peter Oh boy, a golden duo XD Those are sooo annoying in class XD

hmm, I just wanted to hoard knowledge :D I can imagine this was quite frustrating for other people yea, since we always read before a lecture started, so we already knew everything before he started explaining things. :)

@Peter Which in a way is nice ;)
Makes the lessons a lot easier to follow, and to sound intelligent asking questions AFTER
:P

yep :D I still have that drive to hoard for knowledge, it really motivates to learn more :)
however I think I'm more balanced with asking questions now, something I learned through the years I guess

@Peter Yeah, you'll pick up on that eventually ;)
I did too.

8:11 PM
yep :) It took a while though hahaha, it was a fun time :)
atleast for me it was fun, can't speak about the other people in class

What time isn't? I had fun today too...
(am still having some right now ;) )

I'm also having fun right now :D
I reflected a lot about myself today, which hammered learning a bit but was a nice day :)

Ah, self-reflection. I look in the mirror every morning for about 3 minutes while doing my make-up, and I leave it at that ;)
I spent most of the day calling managers and thinking about what I want from my career.
I got the call today that the project I'm currently on is getting some budget cuts, so I have to find a new customer/project to work on (I keep my employer though, it's not like I lost my job).

I have a mirror, don't really use it for anything actually. It looks nice on that wall :)

I don't mind, because tomorrow I have a meeting with my manager and I was planning on discussing with him the fact that I feel a bit tempered in my progress/ development on the current project, now that doesn't have to be as awkward XD

8:18 PM
I see, thats a good time to discuss what to do and right in time because of the budget cuts
When I'm going to work I think talking about earning money will be quite awkward, since I don't really think about that now

@Peter Yeah, I hope I can switch to something cybersecurity related. I've been interested in that for a while now, but other than programming best practices there wasn't much room to develop that interest on the current project
@Peter Hmmm.. I think you're used to it soon enough ;)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell hmm, I did an interesting internship at TNO at the department of Cybersecurity and Robustness
it's such a fascinating topic

@JAD Sounds cool, what did you do?

JAD
tried to develop a statistical method for detecting periodicity in network traffic
idea being that an infected network will periodically check with some master server for instructions

@Tinkeringbell Would be nice if you could get that, good luck with the appointment tommorow :) Yea, I'll probably get used to it sometime, quite hard to imagine that now though :)

8:22 PM
@JAD Well, I heard our company is a little short on the ethical hacker/ pen testing side, but also on the risk assessment and crisis management ... so, we do a lot of fun stuff and they train people internally, so I'm going to see if the manager is willing to put me on that.

JAD
so if you can detect a connection between two IP-adresses+ports that sends packets very periodically, it might be worth checking out

Oh cool... that's mainly data logging and analysis then?
I think that's something our company does in combinations with third parties as well :)

JAD
no logging, we were working with already logged data. Just the analysis

@JAD Oh, that's the best part anyway XD

JAD
so basically, per connection you get an array of timestamps, showing when a packet was sent
return whether it is periodic (enough)
so now what if I add randomness to the interval

8:24 PM
Sounds deceivingly easy :)
(before you added the randomness)

JAD
so instead of every minute, check every rand.next(30, 90) seconds

I think it can be quite complex because of the time it takes to send packages right?
If a package is delayed, it could still be periodically send

JAD
@Peter yep, there will always be some randomness
although the times we used were truncated at 1 second
so it wasn't that big of an issue
but now what if I have a signal every 60 seconds
and I randomly inject extra signals
so instead of varying those 60 seconds, I add additional noise

I see :) however 30,90 is a big difference, is that a realistic scenario? I'm more in embedded programming, don't know much about networks

JAD
tricky. I don't think it particularly matters. I don't know enough about it tbh, but I'd assume that you don't have to check for instructions like ddos this server every minute exactly on time

8:29 PM
ooh wait the 30,90 are extra signals, I thought you would add this to the periodic signals, which would make it really though
or I'm half asleep at this moment haha

JAD
no, I meant that instead of sending every 60 seconds, you randomly send between 30 and 90 seconds later
which I admit is probably broader than we could still detect as periodic

I see, thats what I originally thought but got confused by the injecting extra signals part

JAD
yeah, two different ways of adding noise
you can very your periodic signal, or you can add additional signals
an earlier method took the time between signals, and tested for the standard deviation of that
which works nicely for 60 58 62 60 60 61 etc

seems logical :)

JAD
but if you start injecting extra signals: 60 60 20 40 60 60
it all falls apart
but I'm starting to approach NDA territory here, so I'm going to leave it at that

8:33 PM
hmm, this happens when a node sends information to multiple addresses right, Ok I'll stop asking more questions haha

JAD
nah, this was per hostIP + port + receiverIP + port comination
idea being that a botnet is connected to a single server

I see :)

Ugh.... the suspsension is killing me! I need two more upvotes today to rep-cap (would need only 1 if there wouldn't have been 2 downvotes in rapid succesion on my cashier answer today :( )

I discovered today that there is a limit on how much reputation you can earn in 1 day

@Peter Yep, I'm 14 points away from that :P

8:36 PM
he mind reader, I was first :)?

Not! :P

it was close though, what time is the server? (eg when is a new day?)

I think it starts at midnight for me... Don't know actually, I think it's midnight for everyone ;)
So there's still 2,5 hours left XD

oh cool, adjusting to timezone of the user is also a possibility, didn't thought about that :)

I don't think it's adjusted per user. I usually see a reset somewhere in mid afternoon. I would guess that it uses UTC+00:00

8:43 PM
oh then you have still 3.25 hours!

Q: What is an SE "day"? When does each day start?

Josh LeitzelWhen does a day start on the Stack Exchange network? Some badges (Enthusiast, Fanatic, Mortarboard) and voting limits are bound by and relate heavily to the concept of a day. Do days correspond to calendar days? What time zone is used? Related Are there any voting limits? Return to F...

@Rainbacon was right ;)

digit comes weird though when you talk in hours, it becomes confusing

although it doesn't show you current UTC time anymore afaict

@EmC I was just about to post that link as well

jk it does, I was looking under the wrong icon

8:45 PM
they changed the icon, I could edit the wiki hmmm
oh wait I can't I only have rep on this SE

Well, I'm down to needing only 4 more points. Guess I'll reach a five day streak then

4 points is manage-able I think :)

9:04 PM
I'm going off, was a nice day and have a nice day all :)

@Peter o/

Q: Mistakes with Contest Placings and Prizes

HadesHeraldI just recently won a laptop at a game night hosted by my university. I came in second place at the event. Afterwards, someone realized there had been a scoring mistake and I was third. Now, the actual second place wants me to trade prizes with them, as they would prefer the laptop over the Am...

If the event wants to correct it then they can buy him a laptop. If they caught it before you got to your car then you should have returned it. — Paparazzi 40 secs ago

Q: Father wants me to give him my work number and I don't want to

jmanI'm moving to a new town where I don't know anyone for work. My father wants me to give him the number and e-mail for my primary work boss because sometimes I don't respond quickly and he worries and he would like a back up contact. My problem is that I don't feel comfortable doing that at all....

11:19 PM
@apaul no much, so I'll be getting some sleep :)

@Tinkeringbell Lucky you. G'night

user15026
(Also, now I want ice cream.)

@Ash Mmm, ice cream.

user15026
I didn't get any when I shopped this week and I've been regretting that all week and this comic, while also being a good sort of intro to the idea of non-binary gender, also made me sad again that I didn't get ice cream.

@Ash The best metaphors are both clear and tasty. That's great.

user15026
I thought it was a good way to introduce people to the ideas, and thought maybe other people here especially might appreciate it

user15026
11:48 PM
(I do apologize if it makes more people regret their lack of ice cream.)

It's kinda cold for ice cream where I am. . . Hot chocolate seems better right now.

user15026
Yeah, we are supposed to get snow again :/ but I tend to like sometimes putting the ice cream in the hot chocolate. Like a float but better.

I just got really cold... and it's not even cold here.

I've done that!
Works great with vanilla.

user15026
Or mint chip :D

11:50 PM
@Ash nice comic! I didn't know Robot hugs
I foresee another way of reducing my productivity at work

user15026
@LinuxBlanket Robot Hugs has some excellent comics on gender stuff, queer stuff, feminism stuff...they've produced a lot of comics I really like.

Sounds neat, I'll check it out
Just tonight my gf and I were taking about the amount of acquaintances that give us the vibe of being gay and don't know it
Not a very scientific method, but from my experience statistically reliable
Oh, and I like hot chocolate with ice cream as well :D

@Ash Kinda reminds me of Bill Nye's ice cream thing:
