I just want to steer away from the popular belief that culture is always relevant and questions should be vtc'd if they don't include such a tag. I think it leads to trouble that could be avoided if we left culture tags as optional and instead forced detail and culture-relevant background to be added to the question instead.
"If the tag is added to the question, it can be reopened" - this happens to me often. Instead requiring the biopic style paragraph might actually result in a useful question
specifically in re-opening. tags can be emphasised by the asker as much as they like. but when a good question is being shut down because of the tags rather than content, when tags may not even be useful... it seems counter productive
Wouldn't a viable solution be to ask for an explanation or tag? I am not demanding my culture be omitted from every question, just that people don't vtc when I choose not to limit the answers by including an irrelevant tag
it only happens with tricky questions that people can't answer straight away, it prompts people to ask for a location tag, and if you don't include and keep rejecting answers then it gets closed
@JesseBarnett Of course. In fact, screw the tag and just ask for the explanation. If it's obviously from one culture based on the explanation, someone else can add the tag.
@sphennings I have never seen someone say "would you include some cultural information", it is always in the form of "please add your culture" or "add location tag"
@Catija the result on your meta post does not reach that conclusion
There's nothing wrong with requesting tags everywhere. It's probably good for people in the US to realize that they are talking to people across the globe and perhaps they should question their assumptions.
@JesseBarnett There isn't a universal test for that. Right now I don't think having a clear set of criteria for that is necessary. If I'm wrong we can discuss it on meta and reach a conclusion.
If the OP is saying this answer won't work for me for cultural reasons I'd consider that a good indicator that the cultural component of a post needs to be clarified.
If we find that there is a bunch of disagreement about whether the culture needs to be clarified on posts or not, then we can consider it a real problem and begin to address it with real world examples of how it plays out informing our decision.
It seems like you care about this issue. If you want to start getting some information about how much of a problem this actually compiling that and presenting it in a meta post would be a good way to start a productive discussion about it.
It is not exactly a new topic, perhaps I could make an answer to that meta post... but most of what I think has already been said, its just people don't agree
@JesseBarnett Rather than talking about what the problem is, or answering the meta post, how about reviewing the questions that have been affected by the issue, and compiling a list of prime examples of where it has become a problem. Also, in preparation for countering positions, try to find prime examples of where having the cultural information could have prevented problems. Then make a meta post with the results, and a proposed solution.
@JesseBarnett In short I don't think that there is currently a problem. I recognize that there could be a problem either now or in the future. Showing me real examples of it being a problem are the best way to convince me that there is a currently a problem. It will also make it much easier to have a discussion about what to do about it if we're able to talk about real examples instead of hypotheticals.
I have a roommate that has a sweaty and smelly feet. He comes back to the room, and doesn't even bother to wash his legs before he gets on his bed. As a result, the room gets filled up by the aura and it is not so pleasant. How do I politely tell him that he needs to wash his legs?
There seems to be a whole crop of questions that probably are best answered by saying "speak up".
I wonder if we aren't destined to become "Dear Abby" of the internet?
Of course, I'm not always the most polite (or least sarcastic) person around either.
I just had an epiphany! We need to promote this site to aspiring speech writers and press agents, especially those wishing to get into the political arena.
@GypsySpellweaver Not really solved yet. We had a short period where they were discussed on meta as well, consensus seemed to be that we're not here to provide a script for different situations...
@GypsySpellweaver Yeah, if I answer one of them I do try to focus on skills instead of words
Not everyone does though, those posts often get 'try this' label
When I was in college, myself and a few friends gathered weekly to play D&D together.
One friend had weekly track & field sessions scheduled prior to our meet-ups. Usually, this wasn't an issue, but there were some days where it was very clear that he had not showered before coming over to play....
I think I'm going to take a good look at the identify-this-movie thing on Movies.SE, they went from restricting it with quality guidelines to banning it outright because the guidelines didn't help.
no it wasn't. Their highest rep member pretty much left. And there is a lot of sniggering from other sites like SFF, who think the decision to cut the largest source of traffic ridiculous
Sorry, but I think part of the problem we've experienced the last few days is that the sniggering wasn't satisfying enough for some people, so they decided to come and try and make it even worse, having their fun at our expense.
@JAD If I propose stricter guidelines, some of my questions might need to go as well. I'm not the 20+k rep, but if it is what is needed to get a site about Interpersonal Skills going, it is what it is
and right now I'm thinking of proposing some quality standards, not outright banning them
That's only for when the quality standards have proven to be insufficient
I personally don't disagree with the decision, and I can understand their stance of "you should have complained when it was being discussed on meta", but I don't think you should present it as a Huge Success(TM)
flag rude comments, flag not nice content, there's a process for everything. But this isn't a forum to vent your frustrations about pathologically learning-resistant people
I just said that I'm not expecting much of a backlash on stricter guidelines for 'How do I ask/talk about X' unless it's from the disruptive kind of people
I was thinking they should include stuff like the cultural factors to consider, the specific Interpersonal Skills part they're struggling with and what they've already tried.
And I was thinking of converting the wikihow on how to be persuasive (maybe with some other sources as well) into a more generic 'How can I convince X of Y'... So that we can start closing that as well
@Tinkeringbell How to ask a question rules seem pretty solid, and so long as those questions meet them (which it seems like most are) then idk what we can/should do
@Catija hello, I have a hard time understanding why you deleted my comment under this Q that is summarized to "suggested action is bad due to X". Could you kindly explain, please?
@JesseBarnett We c an ask people to put a certain amount of detail in their question, I think MoviesSE had a custom close reason stating what was sort of expected for 'Identify-thismovie
Like, if it's lacking certain details, we can close it.
It might be helpful to have a meta on that, so that we can link back to it, and give the OP some guidance on what they can include, and why it should be included..
also, I will make a post about the culture discussion that was on chat @Tinkeringbell but not for a very long time. I want to collect some nice examples and they only happen rarely so if you want to make a post please go ahead
This is just a heads-up: per the request of the membership of this site, I'll be moving 54 ID questions from the Movies & TV site to Science Fiction & Fantasy today.
What does this involve?
As part of the batch migration process, each question will be locked and deleted on Movies & TV, then re...
@Fermiparadox I wasn't there, and I never saw it, but the summary you gave of the comment suggests that it was an answer, not a comment. Traditionally answers in comments are deleted.
@Tinkeringbell I can't see chat and close vote history, which is what I want to use to make my point, instead I will have to wait for a golden example to slowly unfold before my eyes as I record it down
@Mithrandir That seems to make the total decision not such a nice fit for our problem. The ID questions were banned, and was given another avenue. In this case, it would be a ban without an alternative.
@GypsySpellweaver I don't think that's the case. I mean.. in a random Meta question i found there are a bunch of comments underneath that should be deleted for the same reason, since they effectively can be considered "attempts to answer in a comment".
@GypsySpellweaver I have no idea. If I were to answer it, I'd focus on answering with "I am uncomforable' instead of 'Your feet stink'... But that's about it
I've only seen glimpses of GI Joe movies, but some of it does seem a bit futuristic for weapon and equipment abilities. Borderline, I suppose, and not worth the time to quibble over if it shows up, would be my guess.
I live on a long rural road where there are barely any people. I have to take my dog out for walks, or sometimes I just go for walks alone, and usually the street is a pretty desolate place. However, on occasion, I do come across other walkers. Since this road is more or less very straight for a ...
As new in Germany (around 10 months now), I am suffering from the language and it is not that easy for me to keep the communication in German, so sometimes I use English or even French when it's possible, especially at work, in order to avoid any misunderstanding (I am working as a Software Engin...
The Situation
Almost every day I'm spending time with my group of friends, among them one I will call John. Together, we often play videogames. When playing, John gets very easily upset by things others would brush off, and he gets very vocal about it.
An example:
Due to bad ping, John gets...
My father married to my step mother 3 years ago when I was in college. From the start she miss-treated me and my brother in every possible way like sabotaging our possessions, breaking into our room. Spying on us and turning father against us.
5 months ago, me and my brother got jobs and she asked...
Is everybody else at work speaking German and has been doing so since they joined the company? Because then simply the working language is German and they are unwilling to change to a language that is harder for all of them to make it easier for one single person. The problem was caused by the person who decided to hire you, either on the premise that "everyone speaks English here" (-> their fault) or that you promised you would be able to do your work in German. You need to speak with them about how to resolve the problem. — skymningen16 secs ago
I am married for more than two years. My partner is under constant belief that I am having another relationship. How can I convince him, I am sincere. He thinks I call/chat during night.
@JAD, Rijkswaterstaat is actually closing the Haringvlietsluizen now because they're losing too much water XD That's the first time I ever heard they had that function too...
I think it the weather needs to be really severe if people will go to nomad lifesteal again. Or some big energy crisis which requires us to go to warmer climats.
@Tinkeringbell oh no I didn't see, that might be a big crisis yes. If that is going to be global (or atleast all northen countries) then yes I think that will be crisis enough. Will be quite a shame if it goes that fast though, since natural resources and saving of energy are explored quite a lot.
However I think one day or another we will go away from oil anyway, since it will not hold for another 100 years.
Here it states there will be a deficit, meaning there will be more demand than can go through that pipe ;) I think there will be reserves though, based on that article
I see, yea I think things like this can be predicted and having some reserves will help reducing the peaks. Hopefully this increases the awareness and importance of green energy and storage :)
Recently I ran into an acquintence in a coffee shop. Our usual routine is to crack a few light-toned jokes or share some stories (Usually that person is quite a conversationalist and we talk about 5-15 minutes.)
That day the person had a slight facial tic and it seemed to stress them out, and du...
I'm really hot blooded I guess, I think I'll freeze when it is 17 degrees here. I'm still a student though so that makes it a bit less worse? Only a small room to heat :)
@LinuxBlanket I see, wasn't aware of this. I really need to follow more news and not only technical ones, however most daily news doesn't really make me happy
@JAD Coding is an iterative process, I never wrote code that actually worked first time
The how is pretty easy. There are (as far as I know) two ways for comments to be deleted. Manually by mods, or when they get a certain amount of flags. Since it's meta, I doubt there were a lot of flags cast.
@Cashbee agreed, there is always an oversight or something that you thought that would never happen. "Oh I never knew negative numbers were allowed" or something like that :)
Me and my spouse left our hometownes several years (10+) ago and got to know each other in the city where we are living now.
The distance to our home towns is about a 3 and a half hours drive in opposite directions.
We used to travel home at least once a month in the past over the years for birth...
@Peter The problem with that question is while they're saying "how do I communicate x?" They're actually asking "How do I make my friends and family behave in a certain way?"
Long story short, my fiancée and I wanted a small wedding. As small as 5 people max, signing the papers and eating at home. We're 34 now, eating at a restaurant at a cost of 165€ (about 200$) per person, suit, dress and honeymoon apart.
We decided to invite friends, parents, siblings + children...
