@sphennings Oh, you're tired of telling people "Have you tried yet?, too?"

I just want to steer away from the popular belief that culture is always relevant and questions should be vtc'd if they don't include such a tag. I think it leads to trouble that could be avoided if we left culture tags as optional and instead forced detail and culture-relevant background to be added to the question instead.

@JesseBarnett I don't think anyone is thinking that, but the nuances of culture matter a lot in human interactions.
@Catija Many of the questions have a little variance that could make them interesting if that was the focus of the question.

"If the tag is added to the question, it can be reopened" - this happens to me often. Instead requiring the biopic style paragraph might actually result in a useful question

@JesseBarnett This is what happens when we put dependency on the tag... rather than the actual information we want.
I'd much rather have a paragraph than a tag.

So you're trying to say that you want to see tags de-emphasized when determining whether a question should be opened or closed?

4:06 AM
and currently the guidelines are: tag > paragraph
yes @sphennings

@sphennings I'd like people to not push for tags when the useful information is a paragraph that gives demographic backgrounds of the people involved.

@JesseBarnett Where does it say that?
@Catija I'm in agreement with you.
@Catija I generally ignore the tags completely in favor of the text of the question.

specifically in re-opening. tags can be emphasised by the asker as much as they like. but when a good question is being shut down because of the tags rather than content, when tags may not even be useful... it seems counter productive

But what happens is people see "oh, we don't need tags.. stop being a dick and asking for tags"... and they don't ask for anything at all.

hmmm
@Catija well I can't say how people would act

4:09 AM
@Catija That's a complicated balance to strike. Nuance is a hard thing to encapsulate in online policy.
@JesseBarnett That starts with "This isn't something we can make a blanket statement about." so don't be saying that it's making blanket statements.

When Hamlet was here prompting everyone for cultural information, he got a lot of pushback... so I've seen it.
He didn't get much support, people started complaining that he was being too strict asking for culture... and then he gave up and quit the site...
I'm not saying he was a perfect example of how we should be... but he tried and got pushback... and gave up.

@Catija That was before my time.

Sure.

Hmmm...

I don't think every question on the site will ever be perfectly tagged but I think that tagging can definitely be improved.

4:12 AM
Wouldn't a viable solution be to ask for an explanation or tag? I am not demanding my culture be omitted from every question, just that people don't vtc when I choose not to limit the answers by including an irrelevant tag

@JesseBarnett If the tag is irrelevant then don't include it.

@sphennings then the question will be put on hold as too broad
sometimes

Really?

it only happens with tricky questions that people can't answer straight away, it prompts people to ask for a location tag, and if you don't include and keep rejecting answers then it gets closed

I've never changed my mind about a close vote because a tag was added. That's just me though.
From what I've seen people will ask for cultural information. Normally this is provided by edits to the question rather than the addition of tags.

4:15 AM
@JesseBarnett Of course. In fact, screw the tag and just ask for the explanation. If it's obviously from one culture based on the explanation, someone else can add the tag.

@sphennings I have never seen someone say "would you include some cultural information", it is always in the form of "please add your culture" or "add location tag"
@Catija the result on your meta post does not reach that conclusion

Put them on hold if it becomes that the answers aren't culturally appropriate. Seems right to me.

How do you know that the answers are not culturally appropriate? It is not something an answerer can know with confidence
it leads people to use culture as the excuse as to why the answers are not accepted by the asker

There's nothing wrong with requesting tags everywhere. It's probably good for people in the US to realize that they are talking to people across the globe and perhaps they should question their assumptions.

@JesseBarnett My answer isn't really... definitive... I even disagree with it myself... in the last section.

4:20 AM
@JesseBarnett There isn't a universal test for that. Right now I don't think having a clear set of criteria for that is necessary. If I'm wrong we can discuss it on meta and reach a conclusion.
If the OP is saying this answer won't work for me for cultural reasons I'd consider that a good indicator that the cultural component of a post needs to be clarified.
If we find that there is a bunch of disagreement about whether the culture needs to be clarified on posts or not, then we can consider it a real problem and begin to address it with real world examples of how it plays out informing our decision.
It seems like you care about this issue. If you want to start getting some information about how much of a problem this actually compiling that and presenting it in a meta post would be a good way to start a productive discussion about it.

It is not exactly a new topic, perhaps I could make an answer to that meta post... but most of what I think has already been said, its just people don't agree

@JesseBarnett Rather than talking about what the problem is, or answering the meta post, how about reviewing the questions that have been affected by the issue, and compiling a list of prime examples of where it has become a problem. Also, in preparation for countering positions, try to find prime examples of where having the cultural information could have prevented problems. Then make a meta post with the results, and a proposed solution.

4:39 AM
@JesseBarnett In short I don't think that there is currently a problem. I recognize that there could be a problem either now or in the future. Showing me real examples of it being a problem are the best way to convince me that there is a currently a problem. It will also make it much easier to have a discussion about what to do about it if we're able to talk about real examples instead of hypotheticals.

I will slowly amass my collection. Anyone know an effective way to save posts at moments across time?

There's the edit history.

I guess if i have a folder and I explain the comments that and closevotes just with a description beside the edit it might work
a lot of work

Q: How do I tell my roommate that he has a smelly feet?

Taylor HuttI have a roommate that has a sweaty and smelly feet. He comes back to the room, and doesn't even bother to wash his legs before he gets on his bed. As a result, the room gets filled up by the aura and it is not so pleasant. How do I politely tell him that he needs to wash his legs?

@ExtrovertedMainMan Is "Open your mouth and move your lips" a valid answer?

7:01 AM
@GypsySpellweaver I'd go nonverbal, otherwise you'll have to breathe and smell it

There seems to be a whole crop of questions that probably are best answered by saying "speak up".
I wonder if we aren't destined to become "Dear Abby" of the internet?
Of course, I'm not always the most polite (or least sarcastic) person around either.
I just had an epiphany! We need to promote this site to aspiring speech writers and press agents, especially those wishing to get into the political arena.

Afternoon

@GypsySpellweaver You're not the first to notice, nor will you be the last...
I don't have a solution for it though (yet)

I'm sure I've seen similar in chat before, yes
Is it really on-topic? Or just that it has not been solved yet?
There used to be, before I was inactive for so long, questions that involved interpersonal skills, not just put words in my mouth.

@GypsySpellweaver Not really solved yet. We had a short period where they were discussed on meta as well, consensus seemed to be that we're not here to provide a script for different situations...
@GypsySpellweaver Yeah, if I answer one of them I do try to focus on skills instead of words
Not everyone does though, those posts often get 'try this' label

I don't want to become a vigilante or something, but those questions are so tempting to VTC as off-topic.
But, I'm not sure that there is a consensus that they are off topic. Not yet anyway.

@GypsySpellweaver Nope, not yet. I think that might be a very interesting next step

7:29 AM
SO calls it homework question, iirc.

Also, I'm pretty sure we've had other questions about pointing out flaws in another person's personal hygiene
I'll look it up once I'm off mobile
@GypsySpellweaver I know, it's been mentioned a few times already in relation to this exact discussion ;)

Q: How can I politely tell someone that they should take a shower?

Steven VascellaroWhen I was in college, myself and a few friends gathered weekly to play D&D together. One friend had weekly track & field sessions scheduled prior to our meet-ups. Usually, this wasn't an issue, but there were some days where it was very clear that he had not showered before coming over to play....

JAD
Hmm, interesting chat last night

Who's "last night" would that be?

JAD
mine

7:36 AM
Would that coincide with my "this night" still?

JAD
I don't know. The discussion about dudebros

Oh, that one. Aye, interesting indeed.
I think I need to move to a new timezone. One end or the other.

@GypsySpellweaver Oh good. Start the voting!

7:51 AM
Already did
Commented as well.

@GypsySpellweaver Nice, I agreed ;)
@JAD I'm wondering why Shog only gives night classes though :P
And is anyone going to do something with the culture discussion? put it on meta, either in a new question or as an answer?

I believe Jesse has taken that project on, with research to be included.

@GypsySpellweaver Okay, good :)

AKA, "is it a problem, and how much if so. Here's the solution"

@GypsySpellweaver Yeah, I'm thinking the same on the 'How do I say X' questions
I'll take that one

7:54 AM
@Tinkeringbell Luck

@GypsySpellweaver I'll need it, probably ;)

My tongue is too sharp and my venom to toxic for me to be principle on such things.

I think I'm going to take a good look at the identify-this-movie thing on Movies.SE, they went from restricting it with quality guidelines to banning it outright because the guidelines didn't help.

I think we may need the same process here ;)
@GypsySpellweaver Sometimes we need that too ;)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell related to working hours I'm guessing

I guess I'm used a little too much about moderating my own voice and opinions.
@JAD I guess...

7:57 AM
I can usually remain civil, but seldom "politically correct" which I disapprove of anyway.

JAD
@Tinkeringbell they also got a huge backlash for it

@JAD Yeah, I know, but wasn't that limited to a few dude-bro's?

JAD
can we please stop using that term...

I think I apprehend the group identified by dude-bro's. But I don't like the idea
If it's a "spade" say it's a "spade" not a hand-held soil relocation device.

JAD
no it wasn't. Their highest rep member pretty much left. And there is a lot of sniggering from other sites like SFF, who think the decision to cut the largest source of traffic ridiculous

8:01 AM
@JAD Like IPS isn't getting the sniggering already

Are the "put words in my mouth" questions a major source of our traffic now?

Sorry, but I think part of the problem we've experienced the last few days is that the sniggering wasn't satisfying enough for some people, so they decided to come and try and make it even worse, having their fun at our expense.
@GypsySpellweaver Yep.

JAD
There is a difference between some 101 rep users causing trouble, and 20k+ rep users doing so

I don't worry about the sniggering, if we cut our throats, however, that's a different issue.

JAD
you can't shrug that off so easily

8:03 AM
@JAD If I propose stricter guidelines, some of my questions might need to go as well. I'm not the 20+k rep, but if it is what is needed to get a site about Interpersonal Skills going, it is what it is
and right now I'm thinking of proposing some quality standards, not outright banning them
That's only for when the quality standards have proven to be insufficient

JAD
I personally don't disagree with the decision, and I can understand their stance of "you should have complained when it was being discussed on meta", but I don't think you should present it as a Huge Success(TM)

@JAD what happaned to assuming good faith?
I know it's tiring but we can't go around calling people names

JAD
^

@JAD Where did I do that? I just said I'd be looking at how that went, I think the process is okay...
@Magisch Okay, if you'd prefer calling the beast by it's name I can do that to, instead of using euphemisms.

@Tinkeringbell How about not calling anyone names and focusing on behaviors

8:06 AM
@Magisch So, what would you call the behavior? butt-hurt?

we're not supposed to moderate users, only behavior. moderating users is diamond territory

disruptive?

disruptive works
It's hard, but if we can't be nice as regulars, how can we expect everyone else to be?

Customer is king, as long as he behaves kingly. There comes a point where you can let the asskissing go and just speak your mind

JAD
@Tinkeringbell I don't see how the following definition applies to the MoviesSE discussion though:

We're supposed to always be nice
If you can't, don't engage

@Magisch nice is relative.... I can be very nice if compared to very disruptive

flag rude comments, flag not nice content, there's a process for everything. But this isn't a forum to vent your frustrations about pathologically learning-resistant people

JAD
@Tinkeringbell Being nice on this site is absolute

8:09 AM
I'm already not engaging...

JAD
There is no excuse

Also consider that our goal isn't to make these people feel bad, but to make them stop being disruptive
It's tempting to vent in chat but chat too is purely public record

I just said that I'm not expecting much of a backlash on stricter guidelines for 'How do I ask/talk about X' unless it's from the disruptive kind of people

Alright

I don't want this to turn into a discussion giving that kind of behaviour more attention
I might have phrased it so that not all of you were comfortable with it, but it is what it is
now, any opinions on the guidelines for How do I ask questions?

8:11 AM
I'm not sure
I concur with shog though that 19 varieties of "Do/How do I ask out X" is unhelpful

I was thinking they should include stuff like the cultural factors to consider, the specific Interpersonal Skills part they're struggling with and what they've already tried.

sounds good

The "how do ask out X" seems to be trying to develop IP Skills. The "put words in my mouth" is asking for someone to do their homework.

we should also start closing generic "how do I ask out {service worker}" questions as dupe of the one we got

@Magisch Yep
And I was thinking of converting the wikihow on how to be persuasive (maybe with some other sources as well) into a more generic 'How can I convince X of Y'... So that we can start closing that as well

8:14 AM
if the latter can be reframed in to developing IP Skills, such that answers need to address that aspect then they seem more on-topic.

@GypsySpellweaver Yeah, that's where the 'I'm struggling with this skill' comes in

@Tinkeringbell How to ask a question rules seem pretty solid, and so long as those questions meet them (which it seems like most are) then idk what we can/should do

I would think "put words in my mouth" without further context / an interesting problem statement would be unhelpful in general

@Catija hello, I have a hard time understanding why you deleted my comment under this Q that is summarized to "suggested action is bad due to X". Could you kindly explain, please?

@JesseBarnett We c an ask people to put a certain amount of detail in their question, I think MoviesSE had a custom close reason stating what was sort of expected for 'Identify-thismovie
Like, if it's lacking certain details, we can close it.

8:16 AM
didn't movies do a massive migrate to SFF with all those questions?

It might be helpful to have a meta on that, so that we can link back to it, and give the OP some guidance on what they can include, and why it should be included..

JAD
@JesseBarnett not as far as I know
They closed everything in the tag
deleted anything that didn't have sufficient upvotes

The Devil is in the details, and requiring the details can be devlish.

also, I will make a post about the culture discussion that was on chat @Tinkeringbell but not for a very long time. I want to collect some nice examples and they only happen rarely so if you want to make a post please go ahead

@Fermiparadox Just so you know, she's usually asleep right now, so it might take a while before you get an answer ;)

JAD
8:17 AM
Some SFF members suggested migrating, but I think a CM shot that down as being a lot of effort

@JAD yes
@JAD they were migrated

@JesseBarnett I think you could look at the ones already closed?

JAD
They were? Hmm, missed that

If you want help looking, I could, just let me know what you're looking for :)

Q: 54 story identification questions incoming from Movies & TV at 23:00 UTC 2017-02-05

Shog9This is just a heads-up: per the request of the membership of this site, I'll be moving 54 ID questions from the Movies & TV site to Science Fiction & Fantasy today. What does this involve? As part of the batch migration process, each question will be locked and deleted on Movies & TV, then re...

8:19 AM
@Tinkeringbell ok, thanks for letting me know.

@Fermiparadox I wasn't there, and I never saw it, but the summary you gave of the comment suggests that it was an answer, not a comment. Traditionally answers in comments are deleted.

@Tinkeringbell I can't see chat and close vote history, which is what I want to use to make my point, instead I will have to wait for a golden example to slowly unfold before my eyes as I record it down

@JesseBarnett Okay :) Good luck!

i cant see removed comments

@Mithrandir That seems to make the total decision not such a nice fit for our problem. The ID questions were banned, and was given another avenue. In this case, it would be a ban without an alternative.

I might as well take a jump here and start doing something with what was discussed in chat when commenting ;)
@GypsySpellweaver We're not talking banning them yet!

JAD
@GypsySpellweaver the other avenue is only partial, since SFF only allows Scifi and fantasy

8:23 AM
Let's focus on getting them into a Interpersonal Skills shape first

That would be my preference.
I'm just not sure how to do it.

@JAD not true, they now accept all movie identification

JAD
really? curious

Our newest Q, for example. How could that be reframed to be about IP Skills and not speech writing?

Its kind of annoying, story-identification is everywhere and clearly an easy way to gain rep there

JAD
8:25 AM
@JesseBarnett tag info disagrees
> The story must be science fiction or fantasy, or else it is off-topic.

hang on, ill try verify

JAD
@JesseBarnett why do you think M&TV got rid of it

@JesseBarnett Incorrect.

@GypsySpellweaver I don't think that's the case. I mean.. in a random Meta question i found there are a bunch of comments underneath that should be deleted for the same reason, since they effectively can be considered "attempts to answer in a comment".

well, the tag may claim its sff only but...
the very first question when i looked was this scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/182568/which-movie-is-this
movie identification. NOT sff
actually... GI joe is kinda sff so i take that back
but only barely

JAD
8:27 AM
definition of SFF might be a bit broad.

@GypsySpellweaver I have no idea. If I were to answer it, I'd focus on answering with "I am uncomforable' instead of 'Your feet stink'... But that's about it

JAD
But I think the tag wiki is leading there. If it doesn't reflect actual policy, it should be edited

I don't see how that's a good Interpersonal Skill either, it's more a speeching skill

@Fermiparadox I wasn't there, or involved. Just a guess as to why it was removed. And many comments that should be gone aren't.

actually i push my statement back out there
GI Joe is fiction, but its not science fiction
and its not fantasy
should be off topic.

8:29 AM
SFF might be getting lots (too much) story ID questions, but they are good at it.
I had my answer in 16 minutes

@JesseBarnett I think the nuclear weapons pushes it into SFF territory. It's borderline, though.

JAD
are nuclear weapons scifi?

But SFF does usually err on the side of leaving ID questions open.

JAD
I think theyre very much Sci, and very little fi

Depends on the weapons capabilities and the time of the story.
Space travel was SciFi to J.Verne, but not to us.

JAD
8:33 AM
hmm, was going to disagree, but good point

So far time travel is still SciFi

JAD
although I guess it depends on the moment it was written

I've only seen glimpses of GI Joe movies, but some of it does seem a bit futuristic for weapon and equipment abilities. Borderline, I suppose, and not worth the time to quibble over if it shows up, would be my guess.

Is everybody else at work speaking German and has been doing so since they joined the company? Because then simply the working language is German and they are unwilling to change to a language that is harder for all of them to make it easier for one single person. The problem was caused by the person who decided to hire you, either on the premise that "everyone speaks English here" (-> their fault) or that you promised you would be able to do your work in German. @LinuxBlanket Morning :)

happy March! Spring is coming closer!

11:47 AM
@LinuxBlanket You'd wish. Feeling temperatures are at -15/-20 here due to a very stiff Eastern breeze
Not exactly my definition of springtime XD

@Tinkeringbell here it's snowing since Monday

@LinuxBlanket Not much snow, but yeah, a lot of cold ;)

I know it's not the same, but it's still very strange for this part of the world

@LinuxBlanket 'fternoon

in my opinion, going out of Africa was one of the dumbest things mankind did

11:49 AM
I mean, I'm wearing a legging underneath my pants today, and my legs were still freezing during commute :/ Time to get that car.

hola @Mithrandir

@LinuxBlanket Meh, maybe we should have evolved more like birds, migrating according to the climate we stand best XD
Because summers in Africa sound horrible to me too

@Mithrandir Well, it's not nice to tell a CM they're wrong, but they are. I raised almost a 100 flags this week I think... :/
@LinuxBlanket I for one am a huge fan of wearing blankets, and temperatures that do comfortably allow wearing one ;)

eh, my comfort weather is the one that allows you wearing only sandals, thin turkish trousers and a tank top by night

heyho

@J.Doe Hi :)
@LinuxBlanket But that would mean there's no sleeping underneath a heavy blanket? Dismissed! :P

@LinuxBlanket Scotland is good for that

12:00 PM
I think it the weather needs to be really severe if people will go to nomad lifesteal again. Or some big energy crisis which requires us to go to warmer climats.

@Peter I read the UK might be out of gas at the end of today?
Would that be crisis enough?

@Tinkeringbell oh no I didn't see, that might be a big crisis yes. If that is going to be global (or atleast all northen countries) then yes I think that will be crisis enough. Will be quite a shame if it goes that fast though, since natural resources and saving of energy are explored quite a lot.
However I think one day or another we will go away from oil anyway, since it will not hold for another 100 years.
There is a pipe somewhere right to import gas?

@Peter It seems I might have misinterpreted the Dutch translation a bit..: bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-01/…

let me read for a bit ^^

Here it states there will be a deficit, meaning there will be more demand than can go through that pipe ;) I think there will be reserves though, based on that article

12:07 PM
I see, yea I think things like this can be predicted and having some reserves will help reducing the peaks. Hopefully this increases the awareness and importance of green energy and storage :)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell proper term for that is windchill ;)

@JAD Meh, why bother if you can translate it literally? :P

Thanks ;) I'll try to forget it as soon as possible.

JAD
:(

12:11 PM
Hmm I almost feel bad that I made my room 21C while it freezes outside

@Peter Don't.
You need it to survive :D

JAD
@Tinkeringbell BEEP BEEP ALARM ALARM FRAME CHALLENGE DETECTED! BEEP BEEP ALARM ALARM

@Tinkeringbell I won't :D I can't write stuff when my hands are freezing

@JAD Oh... sorry. I think frame-challenges on feelings aren't allowed, just as they aren't allowed on religion? :P

Q: Conversation with a person who is stressed out because of a facial tic

arangRecently I ran into an acquintence in a coffee shop. Our usual routine is to crack a few light-toned jokes or share some stories (Usually that person is quite a conversationalist and we talk about 5-15 minutes.) That day the person had a slight facial tic and it seemed to stress them out, and du...

12:14 PM
@JAD I think almost all my answers to questions are frame challanges..

@Peter Yeah, that'll be the worst part, probably ;)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell whether frame challenges are allowed has little to do with religion tbh

@JAD What I meant to say was that feelings can't be frame-challenged, just like religion?

@Tinkeringbell yea, it is about priorities :)

JAD
ah, like that

12:16 PM
@Tinkeringbell 17 degrees is what we keep our house at. Is fine :-)

JAD
well, you can't really tell people how to feel

Like, we have that post on honoring premises, and anongoodnurse explained a little about how they deal with such stuff on Parenting...
@RoryAlsop Where do you live? Sparta?

JAD
@RoryAlsop hmm, we only heat the living room to 18

@Tinkeringbell Scotland. But whatever country I am in, 17 is a healthy temp

Do tell me you people wear sweaters and warm socks and blankets?

12:17 PM
21 would make me have trouble working, thinking or even being conscious
@Tinkeringbell god no

Ours is heated to 20 and I still have cold appendages.

JAD
@Tinkeringbell no, kilts. You never seen scottish?

I own no sweaters or jumpers. I do have a hoodie or two, but only because Stack Exchange sent them
@JAD exactly

JAD
(took a while to remember the name)

@JAD I knew what you meant :-)

12:18 PM
I'm really hot blooded I guess, I think I'll freeze when it is 17 degrees here. I'm still a student though so that makes it a bit less worse? Only a small room to heat :)

JAD
But I can imagine some scottish being annoyed at calling them skirts though :p

@Peter I'm happiest when outdoor temps are below 15C
in fact -20 to +15 is my happy zone. My wife is happiest above +25. This makes choosing holidays interesting

@RoryAlsop Thats really different from my preference yes, I like it when it is above 20. I can imagine that will be quite a challenge

~80°F is good

@Peter well - usually we choose holidays in hot countries, and I stay in the shade/pool

12:23 PM
@Mithrandir Agreed, I also like 26.66667 C

lol

@Fermiparadox I didn't.

JAD
Always feels bad that my tests are failing because I am bad at maths :(

@JAD That's what tests are for ;) The tests are failing, not you :D

JAD
well, I suspect that they are failing because there is a maths error in the test :/

12:29 PM
@Peter climate change is already causing people to move: theguardian.com/world/2016/nov/26/…

JAD
oh, nevermind, the actual code was wrong
YAAAAY

@LinuxBlanket I see, wasn't aware of this. I really need to follow more news and not only technical ones, however most daily news doesn't really make me happy
@JAD Coding is an iterative process, I never wrote code that actually worked first time

JAD
but it feels bad if the tests are wrong
and making tests for a numerical algorithm isn't the easiest thing

yes however thats an iterative process as well, so when you finished it you actually know that your program and tests are correct :)

JAD
or something happened to go wrong twice ;)

12:37 PM
the satisfaction increases with the amount of time you need to spend on it (especially if it is something thats hard)

JAD
well, this is my first big project, and I'm starting a more formal writeup now, so yeah I'm pretty happy with it

@Catija any idea why it was deleted? or how it was deleted?

JAD
The how is pretty easy. There are (as far as I know) two ways for comments to be deleted. Manually by mods, or when they get a certain amount of flags. Since it's meta, I doubt there were a lot of flags cast.

@Peter If your code works the first time, it is highly suspicious that something actually isn't working :)

@Cashbee agreed, there is always an oversight or something that you thought that would never happen. "Oh I never knew negative numbers were allowed" or something like that :)

Q: How to get our families and friends to get in better contact with us or cope with the situation

macbertMe and my spouse left our hometownes several years (10+) ago and got to know each other in the city where we are living now. The distance to our home towns is about a 3 and a half hours drive in opposite directions. We used to travel home at least once a month in the past over the years for birth...

JAD
@Cashbee well, first time I ran this, it worked so well, it just kept on working
(forgot to break out of a loop)

@JAD thats a very enthusiastic program

JAD
Must... keep... optimising...

That sounds like a problem I've never had before (sarcasm)

JAD
actually, the problem was that the optimisation kept restarting
since I did have a bool flag checking whether it had already restarted once, but after restarting it wasn't set to true

1:02 PM
I see, you pinned down the problem so thats nice :)

JAD
hmm, it's only 3 classes so far, so it's not that bad (yet)

1:59 PM
Wohoo! I hold 75 percent of the announcer badges on this site XD

NVZ
Such drama, much wow. What is going on in meta.. haha
I have a dream.. that one day IPS will be fun for all.

extra points for the guy on meta who question's shog's ability to decide policy

NVZ
I see that I have lost the top spot on the rep tables. Maybe I should start answering a few questions.. huh

I answered 3 questions today, but none are HNQ and my answers aren't outstanding

@NVZ I request you answer this question, since my answer is not the best one: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/11215/…
writing answers is though, I'm far better in asking a lot of questions :D

2:07 PM
@Peter The problem with that question is while they're saying "how do I communicate x?" They're actually asking "How do I make my friends and family behave in a certain way?"

@sphennings hmm, I focussed more on how to discuss it actually
however I think I agree :)

NVZ
@Peter Thank you for considering me. I'm however not in a position to actually answer questions at the moment..

@Peter Most answers will since the later is not really an IPS question.

@NVZ you're welcome, don't feel like you have to :)
@sphennings yep, maiby thats also why I'm not really happy with my answer XD

Q: Dad wants me to invite his mother to my wedding. How to push it back?

AlexLong story short, my fiancée and I wanted a small wedding. As small as 5 people max, signing the papers and eating at home. We're 34 now, eating at a restaurant at a cost of 165€ (about 200$) per person, suit, dress and honeymoon apart. We decided to invite friends, parents, siblings + children...

Wow, I sparked quite the comment thread on meta ;) All I wanted to say is that I didn't downvote because the answer would be 'don't' XD
