2:06 PM
Wooh. That's a slow day for me...

@avazula I've read that plus several other blogs

@ElizB oh? Haven't found others on Medium (I really like Medium :D)

I have an entire window open on my desktop for SE- the chat, the main page, and the meta for the comments, how to write a good question and answer, and then the Main Meta, then a slew of tabs that have questions that i found were evidence of the "pile" of requests that have gone unanswered, and some people have come back to it and made a bounty to remind the SE staff to answer something.
@avazula I'm on my tablet-with-a-bluetooth-keyboard now
so it's behaving like a computer
but it's not...
i'm here and I'm only one of two people in the school computer lab... :P

@ElizB wow. I'm not the only one having a slow day then :p
do you feel better btw?

My stuffy nose seems to want to linger. (shrugs) otherwise I'm alright
I might take cold meds to help reduce the sinus pressure which isn't as bad now
I'm doing khan academy for my math now
My brain can't run as well on only 6.5 hours of sleep... and the night before I only got 5.25 hours of sleep

2:20 PM
@ElizB wooch. Some people may handle that few but it's really not much

@avazula Yeah, it really is not. Its a noticeable slow down in my speed

<- Less than 3 hours here. :(
My sleep schedule is really wack sometimes.

Yeah, i was gonna mention that. Still, it seems like he handles it better than I do...

...I sometimes get around 4 and can function, but last night I got 7+ and was still exhausted in the morning.

@Mithrandir I actually function better with 6 than with 8 ._.

2:27 PM
I usually need 9 hours...

@avazula that makes sense though, actually

@Mithrandir I usually get on average 7 ish hours. it really depends on where in my sleep cycle the alarm gets me up
@Noon 9 hours is amazing for me

If you get interrupted in the middle of a sleep cycle, then you'll be tired. If you're near an end, you'll be less tired..

@El'endiaStarman has seen how chipper and hyper I can get on the weekend if I had a great amount of sleep
@Mithrandir yup
I believe I was interrupted this morning
both by my alarm and el'endia's.

@ElizB I have a watch that wakes me up at the optimum time from a predefined time range. For instance, I configure it so as to wake me up before 7:00AM with a slot of 45min, and therefore it'll wake me from 6:15 to 7:00 at the time I'm most likely to feel energized all day

2:30 PM
This sound like a what should I do question, should we do anything about it? (@Mithrandir )

@avazula That's a feature I'm hoping to implement in my new alarm clock at some point.

@Noon hahaha
@Noon It's an old question, the site's requirements weren't that well-defined back then :)

@avazula Don't laugh, it's not nice for Arwen :P

Mith should edit their question, though (and I'm pretty sure they will :) )

@Noon always fun to VTC my own stuff

2:32 PM
there exist several such apps for smartphones. What I like the most (brother uses it and swears on it) is the alarm clock with integrated lamp (or vice versa?). It continuously lightens up the room, starting about 20 minutes before the alarm

@avazula Yeah, I know, I have been looking at old question all day :)

(but yeah gimme a few hours until I have a working computer l

@Cashbee A feature I'm hoping to implement soon!

@Mithrandir If you edit, tell me so I can retract my VTC :)

@avazula That's really, really nice.
@El'endiaStarman got a raspberry Pi and is playing with it and got his hardware for giving power to the shaker and he got a power thing so he can plug in the lamp.... (sorry el'endia I'm not as verbose in this stuff as you are)

2:35 PM
hehe

@El'endiaStarman Which language are you programming in? Lua?

I use a relay to allow 5V from the RPi to switch on/off a 12V shaker, and I recently got a 120V relay that I can use to switch on/off a lamp plugged into it.

@avazula I think Pi loves Python, no?

Embedded systems is my specialty yet I never did anything with Raspberries, so ...

2:37 PM
Also is it weird to anyone else that Raspberry has a P? Whenever I see it written it always gets me

@El'endiaStarman Interesting. I had no idea one could program Pis in Python!
@scohe001 Well, to me it seems as weird as psychologist, knife(/knight), ...

Yeah, i had to learn that while practicing my speech when I was younger
I kept pronouncing everything like I read it
but my mom and speech therapist kept correcting me

@avazula yea but silent letters at the beginning are a more usual thing. Like knack, knapsack, knee, gnat, wrap, wrong, etc... But a random P, smack in the middle of a word? It always throws me off

@ElizB wow that must be tough, especially in english language, the one where you can never know the pronounciation by looking at the word

@scohe001 Yeah, I see what you mean

2:41 PM
Yeah, it was tricky. I still stumble over several words. For example, me and @El'endiaStarman laughed over his tripping over "I appreciate it"

Okaaaay, so this is supposed to be my 2nd meeting of the day yet the person hasn't showed up yet. Again. It's been 20 minutes (had the same this morning, except that I waited for 40')

@avazula my little sister will always pronounce it "Rasp-berry" so that she can remember for her spelling tests :p

@ElizB Actually, it was "I appreciated it", with the 'd' on the end, because that's two near-identical sounds in a row.

@scohe001 aaaaw cute :p how old is she?
(Sister #5 and #6 tend to do that too, and they're 11)

@avazula haha she just turned 13, so she's turning more bratty than cute now, but she still has a couple cute things going for her
@avazula dang, how many sisters do you have?!

2:45 PM
@scohe001 I used to (and sometimes still do) think of "Wednesday" as "Wed-nes-day" for spelling purposes even though that's not how its pronounced at all.

user15026
@El'endiaStarman this is a thing I still do.

I used to say "ba-thing suit" instead of "Bay-thing suit" and "Suit-e-case" instead of "suit -case"
Yeah my point exactly!

@scohe001 Errr ... Let's say I have an adoptive family, that I know, and a biological family, that I never met. Adoptively speaking, we're 9 (6 gals, 3 boyz). By blood I have 1 brother and 2 sisters but my relationship with them is chaotic.

@El'endiaStarman haha same! It's just not a word you have to spell often, but when you do...

Let me just say: B-E-A-utiful!

2:46 PM
@avazula holy moly. What a house that must've been growing up. What number are you?

who knows that quote?

@Cashbee Oh, that's another great example.

@Cashbee that's Jim Carrey isn't it? I just don't remember which movie....

@scohe001 yessss

from... Jim carrey?
haha

2:47 PM
@scohe001 Bruce Almighty, IIRC.

i think its bruce almighty yes

Probably my favorite of Jim Carrey's movies.

Yeah!! that movie was SO funny.

@El'endiaStarman Ahh that was gonna be my guess too

omg havent seen that one in ages..

2:48 PM
wellll..... my favorite is the Mask

i loved the truman show

That one is a classic and won't leave #1 on the list of his movies

I don't think I actually saw that one
O.O

You gotta
I've seen it at least a dozen times and can't get tired of it

WILL DO
ups

2:49 PM
lol
favorite line at the end... "That's a spicy meat-a-ball!" hahaha

"Why" question aren't on topic, right? (I'm speaking about this: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/499 )

It's kinda funny and sobering at the same time watching the meta post "revisiting the HNQ..." gain so many upvotes and now is gaining almost as many downvotes. yikes.
@Noon just looked at it and it seems off topic because it's primarily opinion based

That what I thought too, thanks :)

you can't generalize that to all why-questions though

I have been here for two month and I never saw a "why" question that was on-topic

3:02 PM
I think in rare cases you can ask that. "Why do we [insert any ips etiquette] ?"

Sid
Can anyone link me to the origin of the "new contributor" thing?

Q: Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator!

Tim Post This feature is now live across the network. We've been doing quite a bit of research into ways that we could help new users have better experiences that ultimately lead them to becoming increasingly valuable, long-term contributors to our sites. While this is still ongoing, it's starting to...

@Noon Why do we mirror our vis-à-vis' posture automatically when we try to impress them?

@scohe001 Sorry my meeting began. I'm sister #1, and second child. It's like: Jake is 25, I Ava am almost 23, Bruce is 22, John is 19, Nina and Maven are 18, June is 15, and Camila and Sun are 11.

Ooh Camila is a beautiful name!

Sid
3:08 PM
@scohe001 How long will the "New Contributor" indicator last for a user?

That's pretty funny though, you're up there all alone with the boys :p

@Cashbee I'm not sure to understand how that's on-topic :/

@scohe001 Ahah, sorry but that's not our real names :p

@Sid One week

Camila is pretty close though

3:09 PM
@Sid One week after a first post, unless you delete your 'first post' then it's one week from the next post....

Q: What are the exact criteria for the "new contributor" indicator to be shown?

Sonic the Inclusive WerehogAccording to Come Take a Look at our New Contributor Indicator!: The new indicator works by the age of a user's first visible post. This could be a question or answer, and the association bonus won't influence the behavior. While you might not be new to our engine, everyone is new when t...

@avazula ahh oops. Well her name is probably still beautiful then! :p

@Sid 7 days after first (undeleted) post

Sid
Yes, yes yes. I understand. I didn't need 4 pings for that. :P

@scohe001 It is. She's my goddaughter and I love her so much :)
Well, as much as the others, but we have a special connection

@Sid btw it's 1 week in case you missed it

3:11 PM
:D

haha

@avazula awww that's super cute. I can just imagine you guys drawing together

@Sid We are desperate to help (new) users since there isn't much "action" on the site anymore :P

@scohe001 I was 12 when they were born. It was the first time I ever cried from joy
How many siblings do you have?

Sid
@Noon I am not a new user. I just have been absent for a few months because university is tough.

3:16 PM
@Sid Erh. Hold on, pal. Wish you best of luck :)

@avazula I have a brother 3 years younger and a sister 10 years younger.

@sid I'm in graduate school... it is tough indeed

@Sid That why the "new" is between "()". We will help any kind of user, really ^^

midterms this week

It's super cute to hear your younger reaction when they brought your sister back. My parents always remind me that when my brother was a week old (and I was 3), I asked "So....when are we going to take him back?" :P

3:18 PM
hahaha

@scohe001 XD Yeah, you were definitively less cute than ava :P

Sid
@ElizB Luckily, mine ended a fornight back. I am still in undergraduate though.
So, you have far more burden, than I do, I guess.

@scohe001 hahaha

it depends on what major you are in and what classes and how many classes. the one class I am seriously struggling in now is statistics

Personally, I remember that, when my little sister was born, I just thought that she was so ugly and red (but I was still very proud to be a big sister)

3:20 PM
@Noon Newborns are sooo red!

I looked like a frog when I was newborn, apparently...
not green, though, just my arms and legs and body were just really small. I was born 5 lb 2 oz

Sid
@ElizB What's your major, if I may ask?

my neice was born 8ish lbs i think

@avazula Exactly! Me and my big sister thought that she looked like Dobby :P

@Sid I'm going for my masters in public health with a concentration in Environmental health, but I am also interested in health communications regarding health literacy in people with disabilites, and I am also deaf. Special place in my heart for my deaf and hard of hearing community

3:22 PM
I have seen a number of newborn now and I don't think I will ever find them beautiful XD

@Noon "Master has given fresh air to Dobby. Dobby is freeee" :p

hahaha

@Noon Speaking of which, I'd like to ask everyone in here: do you guys want to have children (later) in your life?

@avazula OMG, that's gross XD

@avazula at some point, yes. I think me and @El'endiaStarman could handle 2, maybe 3.
first, though. school!

3:24 PM
@Noon hahaha

Sid
@ElizB That went completely over my head. What's health communications?

@Sid y'know how some doctors offices have posters that let you know if you need a flu shot, or some kind of preventive health information? That's what I want to help increase accessibility for the deaf and hard of hearing community

@avazula Well, I don't think I will ever be able to take care of one :/ I have trouble taking care of myself already so children would be too much :( But I would love to be an auntie or something

plus people with disabilities, such as cognitive or physical

@avazula What about you?

3:27 PM
@avazula probably, but idk if I'd be the best dad. The things I'm excited for are the mayhem I could cause with a mini-me minion.

@scohe001 oh god no... don't give @El'endiaStarman any ideas.....

@ElizB hahaha. My SO feels the same way xD

@ElizB You know it's already too late.

Sid
@ElizB Ah. That sounds interesting.
@avazula Since, I am only 19, children are probably way down the priority ladder for me. :P

@Sid which is why I said "later on" :p haha

3:29 PM
@Sid Research has shown that people with disabilities have a much harder time accessing preventive health simply because their communication medium is unstable, and medical professionals have basically little to no training for actually applying cultural competency.
@El'endiaStarman nooooooooo :P

@avazula ...I'll pass on answering that for the next few years

@ElizB haha I'm just saying that if I raise another human being and they're not a total goofball weirdo that makes puns all the time and laughs at my jokes, I've clearly done something wrong

@Noon Oh :/ I don't know what to say, except ... I feel you. Interestingly, I learnt that I'm way better at taking care of others than myself

@El'endiaStarman I wish I knew enough Japanese to tweak "omae wa mou shindeiru" to fit the occasion.

@Mithrandir By the way, before I read one of your questions, I had no idea you were so young!

3:30 PM
@scohe001 hahaha yeah.... Me and @El'endiaStarman were talking about science and engineering baby books

@El'endiaStarman im a hanzo main <3

@El'endiaStarman NANI?!
2

d'oh i suck
wrong meme

@Cashbee Huh, I dunno what meme you were referencing.

nevermind >.<

3:31 PM
@ElizB haha me and my SO were just arguing the other day over whether we'd want an engineer baby or a sciences/doctor baby :P

@Noon Youngest mod too, IIRC.

@scohe001 The strangest things to argue about....

@Noon Well, I didn't want to for a very long time (i.e. from like 14 to 21). Now I'm considering the idea.

@avazula I could do with or without. Both options are ok :)

@scohe001 I'm pretty sure that's exactly what my father in law did with his three sons

3:34 PM
@avazula and? How'd it turn out?? I'm taking notes here

(I might be as well.)

@scohe001 Well, exactly as you described ...

@avazula sounds like overwhelming success to me then

@scohe001 It's both a blessing for the father and a curse for the mother
She basically has four children: her three sons and her husband

@El'endiaStarman not even close
Riker (Veg*ism) and heather (Quantum) are both younger than me

3:38 PM
@avazula hahahahaha I love it

@Mithrandir Oh hey, I know Riker. But they both became mods after you did. Weren't you the youngest at the time you became a mod?

@El'endiaStarman probably
I was 14 at the time

how old were you then if i may ask?
oh wow

4 messages moved to Trash

@Mithrandir That sure is impressive!

3:40 PM
Yeah. I remember being surprised at learning her age a few years ago because her online behavior was so different from most others in the same age group.
Still is, for that matter.

@El'endiaStarman SE users' behavior is inherently different from other people of the same age if I must say

@avazula Well yeah, that's true. But not usually like someone 7 years older.

@El'endiaStarman True

That's an intrapersonal question, right? This meta post is making me doubt ><

don't go comparing my comments on IPS with my comments on reddit. You would think I'm 40 years younger
@Noon on said question there is a comment from cat:
> I think that "controlling the volume of your speaking voice" is well within the skillset one needs to master for interpersonal interaction. Speaking too loudly (or softly) affects your ability to communicate with others. As such, learning how to control this would be an interpersonal skills issue.
While I see her point, I am unsure just as you are

3:46 PM
@Noon Well yes, that's an intra to me too. But note that the question and meta post are both very old and the site policy wasn't pretty established back then. So yes, VTC (IMHO)

IMO no close
I think it's more inter than intra
while yes it's your own voice you need to control, you do it to influence the conversation in different ways

@Cashbee I agree that's a tough one :)

Well, since it's an old question, I think I will just let it rest then

I think robert hits the nail on the head in his meta answer

@Cashbee This expression "hits the nail on the head" is sooo weird ><

3:49 PM
@Noon it rustles my jimmies whenever i hear it
no, why?

What's weird about it?

Well, I still think that it should be closed because we closed similar questions for the exact same reason so, for the sake of consistency I would VTC.

@El'endiaStarman the meaning isn't that obvious for French people (i struggle with it too :p )

We should start a meta, where the line is drawn more concretely and in plenum

3:51 PM
Yeah, plus the fact that I didn't knew this expression a week ago

@avazula Huh. What do you guys call the top of a nail that you hit with a hammer ("the head of a nail" in English)?

@avazula ah. 😀 well, that expression exists in german 1:1

Isn't that an exact duplicate of a recently asked question?
@El'endiaStarman There's no name for that, so it's like the literal translation
I think the expression would be "enfoncer le clou" in French, which would mean "definitely make a point'

@El'endiaStarman I think it's the head too but, still weird (every time I see this expression I think of someone being kill by someone else hammering a nail in there head)

@avazula Hmm, interesting. That's not quite what the English idiom means; "you hit the nail on the head" basically means "you got that exactly right".

3:55 PM
Okee, gonna go to a study session with classmates for stats! :P
bye for now :)

Bye :)

@Noon same for me haha

XD

don't hit the nail on my head

Q: How to start the conversation with my neighbor

Maxime OzenneI'm living in my parent's house and for more than one year we have new neighbors. Their daughter is beautiful and I want to get in touch with her. I actually know her name from the name of his parents, Facebook did the rest of the job. I'm wondering how I can start the conversation. In fact I c...

Q: How to overcome shyness at the gym and start seeing results?

raheemmcdonaldI was told to ask this in Interpersonal Skills, so here I go. I've been on a diet for around 3 months now (since July) and I joined a gym around the same time. Since then, I've been having a lot of salads and in-taking more protein. I'm starting to see progress in my biceps and triceps but that's...

3:59 PM
@Noon Oooh, because of ambiguity with regards to whether "the head" means the nail's head?

@El'endiaStarman yup
@ExtrovertedMainMan Wooooow man! One question at a time! There's too much info here
"Their daughter is beautiful and I want to get in touch with her" why does this sentence makes me laugh so much haha

@El'endiaStarman :D

@avazula And yet, we are all jumping on them to leave comment and help improve their question :P

1 hour later…

I wanted to earn the badge when for when you vote 40 times in a day (the daily limit) but now there is new answers/questions and I can't upvote/downvote anything which is very frustrating ><

Tom is laying out the conditions under which he is willing to stay friends. That's not blackmail. The OP has no claim on Tom's friendship. I agree that OP should stand firm and accept not remaining friends with Tom. — David Thornley 22 secs ago

-_- Not helping! :P

@foggybottom I get the feeling that you don't understand Tom's reactions. You dumped him, and what feels like the most tactful way to one person won't necessarily feel like that to the other person. I also have the feeling that he's going as far as he can right now in extending friendship. I hope you gave him your decision and then just let him alone. — David Thornley 45 secs ago

6:56 PM
@avazula Well, I just have to wait until tomorrow morning, then I will be able to downvote all I want *Mouahahah*

7:10 PM
Mutiny?

Sounds good. Wait, what are we mutinying about?

Mutiny for more access to mutiny.
Sanctioned mutiny isn't really mutiny, now is it?
starts fires
leaves them unattended

@apaul now this I can get behind
walks at a slightly faster than moderate pace with scissors

hacks SE and puts IPS back on HNQ

@El'endiaStarman 😭

7:24 PM
Not sure how to do the hacking though. Maybe I should ask a question on SO.

@El'endiaStarman please no

@Mithrandir Oh, okay. Time machine shenanigans instead?

That's better. I'd prefer to keep IPS off the HNQ, though, at least until we've done some fall cleaning :D
Doing some shenanigans involving transferring hard drives now so hopefully I'll have a working laptop soon
(been on mobile all day)

In class now talking about environmental health... basically a repeat of all the info I know lol

In addition to "fall cleaning" we probably ought to take a look at our Q's per day. Seems like we've been slipping considerably.

7:33 PM
That's what I've noticed too...

@apaul is there a way we can really affect that without each of us asking a question a day ourselves?

@apaul If you want some data, I writted this today: data.stackexchange.com/stackoverflow/query/914705/…

@scohe001 Eh, doubt that there's a good way to encourage others to ask. Probably best to be the change you want to see.

@Noon note that that data is all available in a more interactive format here: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/site-analytics

Anyone have a question they've been hesitant to ask?

7:36 PM
@Noon I was surprised at the figure of 7k+ questions per day then I saw the site was SO, not IPS.
@scohe001 That's only for high-rep users (and mods) though (5000+ rep).

@apaul "How can I actively encourage more people to ask IPS questions?"

I was thinking the same.

@El'endiaStarman ahh true, I thought Noon had 5k. My bad @Noon

@scohe001 To meta with you, bah!

@El'endiaStarman Yeah, I don't know why it was put on SO by default

7:39 PM
How about some... Incentive...
Someone come up with a question, before I decide to. (We all know how that usually goes ;)

@apaul I know we had "best answer of the quarter/last 50 days/etc..." bounties back in the day: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1435/…
Maybe we could start something like that again for questions?
Oh or that haha I like your incentive more :p

@scohe001 Those kinda died due to lack of interest.

@apaul ahh I was wondering. That was all before my time. That's too bad tho, seemed like a fun idea

@scohe001 We need a more active community to make those work. Need an active community to encourage an active community. It's a vicious cycle.

@scohe001 "Before my time", I must be tired but I found it funny x)

7:44 PM
@Noon haha I'm too young for this! :p

In the before time. In the long long ago.
So... Who's got a question they've been sitting on?

LOL that's South Park, isn't it??

@scohe001 lolol it's South Park spoofing Mad Max
Hmm
I might have to ask a question...

@apaul ahh I'm uncultured. I only know because my brother loves quoting it
@apaul stick it in the sand first if you're worried it'll be too "apaul" of a question? :p

I already asked a question about my narc dad.. and I am actually really, really pleased with the results

7:50 PM
@apaul I read this with the same voice my mom used to take when she was threatening me "I count to three... 1..." XD

@scohe001 Not sure if either of those qualify as "culture"

it's the best answers i've ever gotten for conversations with him

@Noon That's exactly the way it was intended ;)

@apaul Call it "culture" like that on a petri dish?

@apaul I have one, but it's not very good

7:51 PM
@El'endiaStarman This.
@Magisch whatcha got?

One of my bosses is really full of himself and does not take criticism lightly

@ElizB You might put that on a comment under the answer you used (or write a self-answer)

I've so far managed this by managing my communication with him in such a way as to not upset him. Now that I'm DPO, I'll have to take him down a couple pegs on some practices regarding personal data
I want to know how I can do that while bruising his ego as little as possible

@Magisch Sounds like a common enough problem to be widely applicable.

@Noon Thing is, I would rather try it then I'll see how effective it is

7:53 PM
Why wouldn't it be very good?

that way I know it would be good

@apaul the boss is a bit of a handful

@ElizB Oh, I thought you had already tried it out

he refers to all the attractive women in the office as "his girlfriends" jokingly, except, not very jokingly

@Noon No, not yet.
Probably won't get to do that in a while

7:55 PM
@Magisch Wow...

@scohe001 I haven't forgotten about you... Makes watching you hand gestures
@Magisch Ohhh... That's classy

@ElizB Well, whenever you try it out, I hope it will work well :)

rest of the place runs kind of around him
rather then with him

@apaul haha I'm curious! I feel like your view on the world is very different from mine. It's what makes all of your content so interesting to read. I'd be happy with another apaul question

@Magisch Could always sandbox it so it doesn't end up being too much of an "apaul question" lol

7:57 PM
@Noon I've decided that I don't want another meeting with him because he made me feel all happy and stuff then later on when I was thinking about what he said, it was all basically pointing to me as the "bad person" and my dad as "the victim"

If the boss knew I was a left leaning feminist he'd try to throw me out of the window
everyone is a bit tiptoeing around him

so i was very discouraged afterwards

@ElizB Well, if you feel worst afterward, it's probably a good decision to avoid him
@Magisch XD

@apaul Yes, but I still can't post it... :P

@Mithrandir can't??

7:59 PM
@Mithrandir Now you are making me curious!

@Mithrandir Why's that?
