@Magisch and mine :(

Okay, what is so tempting about leaving comments asking about legal things about me being a mod on my questions? >.<
Also, is it just me or does interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9545/31 not actually answer the question?

Uh... I can't direct reply to Harper...

@Catija So... Did I miss anything important?

@apaul In what respect?

@Catija The general goings on?

I don't think so? I don't know. I've been playing with a new script so I haven't been paying attention in here much. There were a bunch of meta posts over the last day.

@Catija Script as in JavaScript, or script as in stage/screen?

3:01 AM
@apaul Browser script for moderating.

@Catija Oh fun. What does it do?

Q: Suggestions for improving the moderator flag overlay view

CatijaI find the flag overlays to be really useful when reviewing flags but I think that they could use some finessing. The two main points for improvement I suggest are: When there are lots of flags on a post and the overlay is at its tallest, it obscures a lot of the page on my laptop screen, rend...

@Catija Just adjusting the UI? I guess it would make things a little more user friendly.

@apaul Not "a little". It really helps a lot. Having half of your page taken over with an overlay is awful.

@Catija Just sayin that it's a UI solution, not a super secret weapon ;)

3:08 AM
@apaul When did I say it was a secret weapon? I've been helping troubleshoot it, so I've been busy testing.

@Catija ... You didn't. One would assume a new script for moderating would be more exciting, or at least I did. I'm sure you're pretty thrilled with the upgrade though.

The exciting thing is hoping that they may actually implement it eventually.

Would be kinda cool to leave a stamp on the inner workings.
Like that surgeon who burned his initials on to those patients' livers... ;)

@Catija sorry to call you every time, but gotta ask. Why was my flag on this comment declined? The answer helped OP, so he accepted it. I guess there is no need of this comment.

6:28 AM
There's a meta on leaving such comments I believe :) So future people know the answer worked for the OP as is?
It's a bit clearer than seeing just an accept since some people actually just accept the most upvoted answer...

A ?month? ago I had a conversation on this chat about when someone asks a question where the answer really should be "you don't". There was a relevant IPS and Roleplaying Games meta post but I can't find them...
is there a way to find very old chat history here? or alternatively does anyone remember such posts?

I'll look em up for you ;)

@JesseBarnett so here's one IPS meta with the link to rpg: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/a/1775/1599

6:51 AM
@Tinkeringbell thankyou so much that was the rpg link, and it helped me find the IPS one too: interpersonal.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/1395/…

@JesseBarnett Oh good because I was struggling to dig that one up ;)

Hmm... interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9554/31 doesn't seem to answer the question either :/

@Mithrandir yeah ... but they have your best interests at heart ...
all are supportive answers ...
if you verbalize, you give people opportunity to nitpick ...

Yes... but being "supportive" doesn't make something an acceptable answer to the question.

yeah ...
the community needs to learn this ...
through more gentle moderation, I think ...
I dunno, though ... you guys know better ...
you have all the data ...

8:30 AM
You've got access to the exact same data that I do ;)

really? nahhhh ... I mean like ... you can view thousands of deleted comments ... that's like ... a gold mine ...
to extract information about users' tendencies / frustrations / cluelessness about how to use IPS SE ...

For every ten helpful flags you cast, you get another 1 flag to use per day, up to 100 flags for a day.
@D.Hutchinson I can't see deleted comments on IPS.
And why do you keep removing your messages?

ah, I see ...
oh, I didn't wanna pry into your moderator tools ... that's why I deleted that
interesting ... it'd be helpful if you could see deleted comments -- Catija must be swamped then ...

Why? What do you think is going on with deleted comments?

I think you can spot trends in those deleted comments ...
those comments ... at their core ... are saying something important ...

8:40 AM
Probably, but it's not like it's easy to see a data dump of all deleted comments, no matter how much I'd like that ;)

@JesseBarnett By the way, were you looking for them because you're writing a frame challenge? Or were you thinking of adding it to our recent 'what should an answer contain' meta post?

yeah ... true ...

@Mith, I probably also will need an IPS mod to protect my question?
(Or wait another 3 hours)

Ugh I should really just become an IPS mod because everyone seems to think I'm one already
I can't protect your question, and I'm pretty sure all the IPS mods are asleep by now.

stars comment
I think so, too
especially since you'd cover the hours for which hde and catija are not here ...
have you tried asking the CMs @Mithrandir?

8:45 AM
Meh, I was kidding - I don't know if I'd actually want to mod IPS. It's... a lot more work than Lit.

yeah ... crazy drama here ...

@Mithrandir I very well realise that you're not an IPS mod... I should just have asked whether protecting questions before they're 24 hours old is a networkwide mod privilege or just a site-bound one ;)

The current team is handling things fine, anyway.

nice

@Tinkeringbell Mods don't get extra privileges on any site besides for their own.

8:47 AM
@Mithrandir Boooring :P Well, then I'll just wait another 3 hours and do it myself... I'm getting a ridiculous amount of answers...

There's one thing I can do on the network portal, and I have chat mod powers, but nothing anywhere else.

@Mithrandir Yeah, it's probably the fact that you have those chat powers that keeps confusing me ;)
And btw, there's a comment calling my attitude 'pointlessly prideful'... is that rude? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9513/…

@Tinkeringbell ... hmm ... hard to say ... doesn't seem ill-willed ...
I'm confused about "comparing checkboxes" though ...

@Tinkeringbell You can always protect your own question.

@AJ Only when it's 24 hours old though
Button isn't there yet

8:53 AM
@Tinkeringbell it's certainly NLN

A J
@Tinkeringbell But none of them is here atm

@AJ I know, I'll just wait 3 hours... by the time they wake up I can do it myself :P

\o/ Famous Question

Btw, @D.Hutchinson in regard to this... interpersonal.stackexchange.com/q/9557/1599 . How do you find out whether it's friends or work? > To me, it would imply that you already have a conversation going about them being on the phone, so you might just cut in then and there?
@Mithrandir Nice, I'll need another 2,5 k views :/

@Tinkeringbell for instance, one time a girl was a lawyer and said it was necessary to email back her senior partner at the law firm, throughout our dinner. Other girls, I wouldn't know, but it's mostly laughing and texting, so I assume it's not work-related or serious matters ...
and I stay quiet ... and am unable to be "assertive" ...
and, some of the answers seem to recommend not being assertive ...

(Does anyone have any response to my pinned message?)

@Mithrandir I'm still thinking about that one... :/ I think with the amount of comments we're getting it might very well ruin the chatroom but on the other hand you won't know before you try...
Right now I'm leaning towards 'maybe try it for 24 hours, if no-one complalins, try for a week while asking for feedback on meta?'

where's the pinned message?

@D.Hutchinson Are you on desktop or mobile?

@Mithrandir @D.Hutchinson, care to try and post a comment? :P
Autocomments can be found here: gist.githubusercontent.com/superplane39/… Just copy paste the one for answers in comments ;)

9:19 AM
I already did that....

@Mithrandir You'te too fast! It's their question :P

@Tinkeringbell what's supposed to happen? should I be commenting on my own question?

@D.Hutchinson Not now, now Mith beat you to it ;) ... I thought you might want to know there's a few preformatted comments.

ah, I see ...

9:21 AM
If you ask a question again, and people start using comments to answer, there's a comment for that.
The sooner it's up, the less comment abuse there will be ;)

yeah, I've been seeing you guys do that ...
do you do it manually?
or is it auto?

If you keep this link you'll be able to see if I make changes or add a comment.
@D.Hutchinson Half-manual, half-auto.

I can't retract flags, can I/

9:26 AM
Nope, can't retract comment flags.
Ah well - worst case scenario, it gets deleted; or it could be declined.

@Mithrandir I'm hoping for declined in this case ;) But I'll keep an eye on it. if not, I'll ping AJ to let them know they should put it up again ;)

It's also linked in the "possible duplicate" comment.

morning

@Mithrandir Would it be better if we leave it to the OP to delete it?

I mean, having deleted posts can cause a posting ban?

Self-deleting will inflict that post ban as well.
I think.

@Mithrandir Oh, okay ;)

And one answer won't cause an a-ban.
Answer bans are very difficult to hit.
Question bans are much easier.

@Mithrandir Oh, okay ;)

9:33 AM
*sigh* that comment
that's not a frame challenge though even
it's answering for a situation that isn't what the situation is
my question is here's what's already happened.
They answer don't get into that situation.
A frame challenge is Q: How do I do <thing>? A: You don't. Do this instead.

@Mithrandir So, A: You could avoid having to do that by doing X instead isn't good?

But Q: I'm in this situation; how do I do <thing>? A: Don't get into the situation isn't helpful.
@Tinkeringbell No, because when the OP is already in that situation then telling the not to get into that situation is useless.

@Mithrandir There's worse on their deleted answer.... They look like they're trying to pick a fight with me. I'm just going to stay out of it...
@Mithrandir I agree... They should tell you A. How to get out of it now.... But in my opinion, giving some advice on the side as to how you could have avoided getting into it the first place isn't that bad?

On the side is one thing, such as a non-IPS solution.
But when it consists of the entire answer? No thanks.

@Mithrandir Which is what I was getting at ;) .... The answer could be improved by also answering the question asked... maybe frame-challenge was a bit of a poor choice of words...
(I did downvote it now, because it's indeed NAA).
I am getting an amazing amount of answers telling me that A. I'm right B. I'm already doing it good C. I can't change other people :/
I might start picking some apart later ...

This latest one for example.... there's already been answers telling me I can't change people, and that I am doing the right thing by telling them up front... interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9567/1599 But this one has personal experience, would it be duplicate?

@Mithrandir would you consider it strawmanning ...

@Mithrandir I can't flag that one VLQ, it's got a postive score

almost-famous question @Tinkeringbell :)

9:46 AM
@Tinkeringbell I go for NaA when it's not available, they have the same effect anyway

@D.Hutchinson Still 2k views away from that... ;) I need another day of front page HNQ for it to get there I think
Your question is also there I see... Be prepared! :P

haha ... yay :)

Thank goodness, community stepped in. It's finally protected!

@Tinkeringbell you can protect questions too, you know

@Magisch They have to be old enough, though.

@Magisch Only the 24 hour old ones, mine was only 22 :P

ugh ... that could probably earn Harper a suspension ...

Nah, comments won't automatically suspend or block anything.

@Mithrandir, we need an autocomment for closed questions with answers that get edited. How's this?
Heads-up: The question has been edited, and might be reopened. Answers might have been affected by the edits, so you might want to review your post and see if you want to change something or if it still stands.
I tried avoiding giving the suggestion that the answer is now necessarily bad, don't know if it worked though?

Busy ATM, soon
Although you just left that comment six times so seems like you already made up your mind :p

@Mithrandir Yeah... you took too long :P
I have to go soon too, and I didn't want to leave it ;)

Seems mostly good. I'd adjust some of the wording a bit, but I think it works as-is
> Heads-up: The original question, which was closed after you answered, has been edited, and might be reopened. You may want to check the updated question and make sure that your answer still applies, even with the added details, or if it needs to be adjusted.

> I also would not expect a relationship to stay for the rest of a life, especially if your life expectation is more than 60 years.
That's disappointing :(

It's an AiC, just flag

@Mithrandir Already did of course ;)

@Tinkeringbell but pretty spot on
most relationships these days seem like they're 2-3 year affairs at most
the need to constantly "upgrade" has become more socially acceptable

@Magisch That feels like looking at people like they're interchangeable... which I really don't like ;)

It's part of the modern Western "disposable" culture... everything is treated as temporary and disposable... from what I've heard...

JAD
12:04 PM
@Mithrandir just look at the workplace, nr 1 solution they offer is "brush up your resume and find a new job"

@Tinkeringbell Thats what society boils down to
Jobs, friends, relationships, everything
It's all good enough until you're ready for the next upgrade

@Magisch :( .... Just.... disappointing.

There is no effort for fixing anything anymore, the internet has made it easier then ever to move on. Have some argument with your partner? Fire up tinder and get another one. Have a problem at your job? Time to get another one. Have a problem with a friend? Ghost them, it's so easy and unconfrontational
This trend has been accelerating in recent times too
The internet has made us more connected and by virtue of doing so also more competitive. You're going to be dropped like a hot potato when something better comes along.

@Magisch I might just as well delete the question then, and stop trying ;)

There are exceptions to the rule
just rare is all
Thats where a great chunk of the anxiety for a lot of people is coming from too. You're in competition with far more people then ever before.
then again, some people thrive from that

12:15 PM
Meh... I just don't compete I guess ;)

12:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell It's really exhausting that you can't really improve that way either. Modern western society has non confrontation down to a science
You're left guessing, most of the time

@Mithrandir Do we delete questions that aren't going to be improved? ;)

I'd say yes, but I would first want to hear other people's opinions on it

@Magisch I'd say yes too..
Lemme put up a quick meta :)

meh
The answer after all may still have some value if it was posted anyway
that's why the roomba doesn't delete them

@Mithrandir Oh... okay...

12:44 PM
Even though I'd really prefer people not answer closable questions, there is a rational reason for leaving them
...personally I don't care.
I'm absolutely fine with them being deleted.
This is why people have delete votes.
Use your judgment - is the answer worth leaving on the net? Is it useful to people?
If the answer is yes, consider leaving it, even though it's closed.
If the answer is no... then I'm strongly in favor of deleting.

I don't see the value looking at it. Thankfully my vote alone won't delete it

JAD
eh, I've answered questions before on this site that ended up being closed. Sometimes people don't agree and the closable-ness of questions

@JAD I've been... made aware of that, yes ;)

JAD
:D

I'm a bit concerned, y'all.

JAD
12:48 PM
uh oh

I'm sorry in advance?

Sam Post may have gone off a cliff but the answer was actually good.

@Catija I edited that one, but also stated they should themselves include a quote from the link on what's relevant.... Since I can't read their mind on that?

JAD
which post are we talking about?

We need to differentiate answers that people pull out of their butts entirely from ones that are based in psychology and just need some support.

12:50 PM
@JAD Deleted answer on a question...

JAD
@Tinkeringbell yeah... link?

@Catija Sure, but they were very rude about adding in the quote even before those edits... I edited out quite a bit of rudeness, and the original was meagre, and a 'try this' without the rationale of the method suggested being explained?

@Tinkeringbell If you have the time and there's a link, find something on the link that relates to the answer. Relying only on a link for the explanation isn't the same as a link only answer.

I didn't cast that delete vote on a link only answer...

I cast it on a 'try this' answer...

@Tinkeringbell So edit out the rudeness. Flag it so the mods can deal with it. If he starts an edit war, back away and wait for a mod to lock it.

12:53 PM
We can't write people's answers for them... When I saw it, it was unexplained, just a suggestion with no indication of why it would be a good idea.

@Catija Wait.... Now I'm confused. ^That's exactly what I voted to delete too..

It's not a try this answer if it includes supporting links.

It still needs to explain how it applies to the OP's situation specifically.

JAD
@Catija I think that the paragraph that was added afterwards was a good (and imo necessary) addition to the post though

(Also, wasn't that link broken?)

JAD
12:55 PM
that was fixed in an edit
You don't want to rely just on links, bring the important information from there to the post instead
As the answer stands right now, I'm not sure why it was deleted

If you don't want to fix it, let someone else. We need to help people who don't know how the system works.

JAD
After the rant was removed, I think the answer was just fine

It's one thing to rewrite an answer with no supporting documentation at all and another to utilize under-used documentation that was included by the OP.

@Catija So, basically, edit in the quote now?
