@Mithrandir Wait, how old are you? Isn't that like for kids? :P

I might make a meta post about this but... Is it appropriate to respond to answers of "too broad" marked questions with this comment?
https://interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9412/how-to-mitigate-underperformance-as-a-delegation-strategy#comment-36609
My reason being, too broad does not necessarily mean "Low-quality" or "Off-topic" so it does not explicitly encourage those sorts of answers

@JesseBarnett The question here pretty much already is, to a degree.
4
Q: How to get a better sense of community going?

TinkeringbellI recently noticed a few things that made me worry about the community here. I basically started asking myself if there is one, and if there is, if it's not just a too small clique of users. I noticed: Some questions that are getting close- and downvotes also being upvoted and answered. This...

hmmm, glad you pointed out that one @Catija but in this case I am getting at a different point

@JesseBarnett Look at Snow's answer.
@JesseBarnett ... eh... I think I see what you're saying.

@JesseBarnett Questions that are too broad, like questions that are off topic or POB, don't meet community standards, and should be closed. I don't see how too broad differs with respect to either fixing the question or closing it, instead of answering.

I don't really think that being broad is any different... answering too broad questions has the same side effect of making the OP feel like editing their question is unnecessary.

3:10 AM
On worldbuilding we sometimes have a problem where a too broad question is answered before it can be closed which makes a situation where to reopen the question existing answers need to be invalidated.

Another good point. If they edit the question to make it more specific, the answers aren't necessarily going to fit.

Okay, so I read Snow's answer and love it, wish there was more of this around. However, that is still not what I am getting at here.

@JesseBarnett Then what are you getting at?

In this example, I think we have done well working with the asker. And they are engaged and will hopefully continue updating their question to meet our standards as there is a very good question underneath. Sure, I agree with you all that those answers are rushed and should not have gotten posted and a good reason is that when narrowing down a "too-broad" question the answer may become invalid...
so my point is the comment on the answers does not cover this, it warns of something else, about low quality and off topic
err, re-reading the comment after some more context it actually fits better than I initially thought, just not including words about broad-ness gave me tunnel vision :D you can probably ignore everything ive been talking about

So your problem is that the text doesn't include every reason that a question could be closed?

3:19 AM
I think that tailoring comments on answers is important... auto comments are useful launching points for comments but editing them is something that should be considered.

@JesseBarnett No worries. If there's one thing that should be practiced in chat on interpersonal skills is to try to have decent discourse on the internet :D

well initially i thought the text did not include anything about why it was bad to answer this particular question... I was wrong
@Catija Yes important, I just thought there might be a more relevant comment to add. In hindsight the current one fits very well.

@JesseBarnett We all make mistakes. I've made more than a fair amount on SE before. It takes some skill stop yourself halfway through an argument and change your position. I respect that.

while we are talking about that question @Catija 1x1 means One on One. I think the expression is fairly common

@JesseBarnett That's the sort of thing that needs to be edited out. It just reads like jargon... honestly, most of that question seems a bit jargon heavy.

3:25 AM
@Catija I don't really know how to fix the question. It seems like it's more about managing employees in the workplace than an actual interpersonal skill.

@sphennings Yeah. But I'm not going to send it to them. Monica'd have my head :P

@Catija I wouldn't send it to their exchange.
@Catija As a general rule if the answer to "Would Monica be happy if you did this?" is "No" it's a bad idea.

@sphennings Monica's great. :D

@sphennings I think it is quite good, they are not asking how to deal with the employee. They already specified they want to talk to them in person with the goal of coaching/improving the persons work, while mentioning that the behaviour is unacceptable.
I think re-wording it to a personal context and getting rid of the jargon might make the question more clear

@JesseBarnett It's not about the conversation it's about getting the employee to be productive. Success isn't "So we started a dialogue." it's "They're now productive again."

3:32 AM
@sphennings I thought they phrased it in a way that makes it clear this question is about the conversation

Q: How do I pitch a message about providing depth in a Fraternity?

Benjamin SarkisConundrum Currently in my last semester of undergraduate college in a fraternity. We are about to have elections for an interim position that will last right up until I graduate. This position serves two roles. The first is managing three people: a Historian, a Photographer, and a Webmaster. T...

@JesseBarnett To be fair, I'm reading a lot into the subtext of the question.

yeah, so did the current answers I think
ahahah is that recent question a joke? does not seem possible :D

@JesseBarnett Fraternities have elections, college seniors don't always have the ability to clearly ask a stack exchange question on their first shot.
@JesseBarnett The profile seems legit. low level activity on a bunch of exchanges. The profile also supports the narrative that they're in a fraternity.

3:42 AM
I think they are still thinking that there is a correct way that adults have intuitively figured out.

4:13 AM
@sphennings it also seems that that question is about winning friends / persuasion, which I believe is off-topic for IPS ...

@D.Hutchinson How is winning friends not an interpersonal skill?

I agree that it's certainly an interpersonal skill -- but Catija's newly written guidelines says that and persuasive speech are off-topic ...
Let me reread ... there's a lot in there ...

@D.Hutchinson I think asking "What do I need to do to get Alice and Bob to be friends with me?" is off topic since it's about getting a particular person to do something. But "How do I make friends outside of work after college?" would be on topic though potentially too broad.

@sphennings hmm ... it's a little problematic trying to find what I had read on meta ... since there have been several discussions on there ...
but there was something about persuasion / trying to win friends / trying to pick up girls using PUA (pickup artist skills) were all off topic ...
I could be wrong, though - I'll look again at meta ...
"How do I make friends outside of work after college?" - I wouldn't have any issues with that at all, nor would I have issues with working on persuasive speech, to be honest ...

PUAs are different... they completely disrespect the person they're interacting with. That's an issue with the "Be nice" rules, not with the site scope.

A: Would the scope of "Interpersonal Skills" include Pickup?

Tinkeringbell I have browsed the site a bit, and I notice there are to date only very few questions which as much as go in this direction. We get questions asking 'is she interested in me?' or 'how do I convince her to have sex with me even if she isn't interested?'. The first isn't answerable because we...

Q: Differentiating on and off topic - How?

MagischYesterday, Shog9 laid down some ground rules in chat for what definitely isn't on topic on this site (source), namely: It is, most emphatically, NOT a site chartered to discuss any of the following: Human sexuality Relationships Neurolinguistic programming How to win friends ...

found it, @sphennings
@Catija does that fraternity question fit in the list of off-topic questions discussed by Shog? I don't see that your guidelines mentioned anything about persuasive speech / speech to try to win friends ...
Or is what you wrote in meta ... an "updated" memo?
or only a subset of what Shog thinks?

@D.Hutchinson Read Tinkeringbell's answer there... the topics aren't "off topic"... not in that sense... they still have to relate to IPS...

@ExtrovertedMainMan this is both too broad and unclear, don't see anything particularly wrong with the subject matter.

@D.Hutchinson To quote "That doesn't mean questions touching any of these topics mentioned above are per definition off-topic here"

Oo I see ...

Q: Should answers on closed questions be downvoted?

bluevaporI'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but a question of mine initially had several answers. Then some people aggressively downvoted the answers, apparently because they didn't like the question (as explained in comments), and now the answers are gone. Is this the policy on this site? ...

@IntrovertedMetaMan. I'll take that one

ahah, @Catija what a coincidence this is exactly what we were talking about earlier ^^

@JesseBarnett 'too broad' = 'low-quality'
@JesseBarnett I wrote the text of that comment in twenty seconds... suggestions for improvement are welcome.

NVZ
how about this?
I suggest you take a look at our sister site Interpersonal Skills. Please note that "what should I do?" would not be answerable. However, if there is anything in particular you wish to do, then you may ask for advice on how to do it. — NVZ 2 mins ago

Anyone that can help me interpret this one?
I agree with avoiding "authoritarian" comments. The closing system has much guidance built into it that aims to be fair but terse; there's no reason to duplicate that (badly) in rote commentary. Which to me suggests that if you can't improve on what the system is already saying, don't leave any comment at all - an awful lot of folks seem to comment because they can't resist saying something, even if it's unhelpful; saccharine nothings aren't making the site friendly either. If you have specific insight into how to improve the question, edit or comment... Else, vote and walk away.Shog9 ♦ 6 hours ago
So... When there's a two-line questions lacking an enormous amount of detail...
Do I provide an avalance of questions requesting the necessary details?
Do I just press close-too broad, please add additional detail?

8:02 AM
What it is saying that if a question is closed as too broad, the message saying that should be enough for the OP to understand, there is no need for a comment saying exactly that it is too broad. Especially if this is written authoritarially
@Tinkeringbell well, maybe, if it is written in a helpful manner, not just to berate OP

@JarkoDubbeldam So... I usually write thing like "This is too broad. Please add XYZ..."
Stop that?

let the system do the berating, be helpful instead

@JarkoDubbeldam Hmmm.... But berating is helpful!
Sometimes

@Tinkeringbell well, that's not what I read from that comment

@NVZ For adding as an example of the type of questions you want to send post that comment on? Please do edit the question you posted that comment on into your meta question ;)
@JarkoDubbeldam Ugh... well, I'll try and stick to it anyway, see what happens :/ I'm only really hoping we don't end up with a bunch of spoiled kids that are expecting a participation trophy at every turn :/
And @NVZ your meta post on ELU is old. Please consider telling people that 'write the script of life for me' is off-topic here....
;)

8:12 AM
@Tinkeringbell well, that's one extreme. I think what shog is allusing to is that we are maybe too far on the other side. On one side you have the system being all "this question has been put on hold, hurr hurr hurr" and then you have a bunch of high-rep users whaling on you in the comments acting like you killed a baby or something
2
ok, maybe that's a bit exaggerated, but do you see why that might be demotivating?

@JarkoDubbeldam yeah I can see that. I was just leaning the other extreme on interpreting that one I guess

8:34 AM
@Tinkeringbell holy, did you see this from last storm? aviation.stackexchange.com/questions/47863/…

@JarkoDubbeldam I didn't.... 0.o
I saw the Dutch footage from Schiphol though

JAD

I can kinda understand why people get seasick from that

@JAD :D Yeah, that one was bad!

@Tinkeringbell Don't just say "I'm voting to close because this is too broad." Explain exactly what the issue is and how to fix it.

@Mithrandir Yeah, probably...
Although I still don't really get the impression that's exactly what was meant :/
Anyways....
I just talked to the folks in our operations department and they are going to try extremely hard to get in touch with everyone this week and get shipments underway. Hang tight :) — Tim Post ♦ Jan 17 at 16:03

pfft, not even getting the title of the post right.

Could you focus a bit more on answering the question that was asked, please? Which is 'how to interrupt'. Telling people to complain/get a new phone is an answer to 'how to get people to stop calling me'... If you want a good example of how to write an answer that both answers the question AND explains why it might also be a bad idea to take the wanted approach, here's an example: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9487/1599Tinkeringbell 42 secs ago
That the sort of comment I should aim for?

@Mithrandir yeah my bad, I actually think the comment is worded quite well now. Just didn't realize at first

@Tinkeringbell Yeah, looks good to me.

Dammit... I want to put this one on the quarterly answers award but it wasn't written before January 1st :/ interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9487/1599
I'll have to wait and see if there'll be a next one. Help me remember when that one comes around?
@Mithrandir Not good enough apparently... This is that participation trophy stuff I was afraid of.... interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9478/…

@D.Hutchinson Isn't Gatorade a sports/energy drink? Good luck on the sleeping after having had that :P
And sleep well :)
I am really satisfied by this number of questions :P

NVZ
@Tinkeringbell to me, it sounds somewhat condescending.

@NVZ Can you give me an example of what is, and how you would phrase it? Might help me see it :)

JAD
@NVZ I think it's a well phrased request.

@JAD Yeah well, we're Dutch :P

JAD
9:51 AM
fair enough
maybe this is a useful IPS question XD

A J
@Tinkeringbell so? :P

JAD
@AJ Dutch people tend to be somewhat direct
We don't usually hold a leaf before the mouth, so to speak

@AJ If I were to not think more about it, I'd just have said... This isn't an answer to the question of 'how to interrupt'. If you want to write a frame-challenge at least answer the question.
Which has IMO all the feedback and sugarcoating one could possibly ever need.
Although it isn't sandwiched... :/ Should we sandwich stuff more?
@JAD Run with it :P

JAD
@Tinkeringbell well sure, it's enough to get that message across
but you don't want just that
you want to coax the (new) user into improving their answer, rather than yelling at them and scaring them away

@JAD Why not? I've just explained to people why I downvoted and delete voted.
@JAD So, I'll add 'If you improve, it can be undeleted' :P

NVZ
9:54 AM
to be honest, I feel like there is a growing trend of "could you do X, please?" in comments which is always condescending when i read it. I would have stuck to one or two requests than a barrage of "do this, not that" in a single comment.

JAD
@Tinkeringbell but how to improve?
remember that comments are to suggest improvement, not just to provide commentary

@JAD That's in the first part! answer the question of 'how to interrupt'...

A J
@JAD ok

@NVZ So, please write my comment for me? Should I have split it up somewhere between the explanation that they weren't answering the question and providing the good example?

JAD
@Tinkeringbell why is it not an answer? What's missing? Apparently there is something that we look for in our answers which might not be apparent for our new users.

9:56 AM
@JAD I'm pretty sure you won't find that in an English dictionary :P

JAD
@AJ Dutch sayings tend to translate horribly
So don't just hit them over the head with the fact that you don't deem it good enough, but rather show/tell what's missing there

NVZ
@JAD yes, guide them, but one step at a time.

@NVZ Since I'm really good at parotting, would you mind just showing how you would have commented in the chatroom?

JAD
To reference Shog:
> If you have specific insight into how to improve the question, edit or comment... Else, vote and walk away.

@JAD I did believe I met that criteria :/

JAD
9:59 AM
@Tinkeringbell I'm missing specific insight
your comment is as generic as can be

A J
@JAD Ours too. "Naach naa jaane aangan tedha" will translate to "do not dance" but it means "Bad workman blames his tool"

@Tinkeringbell Hey, thanks for the answer! Unfortunately, your answer doesn't seem to address the question asked, which was how to politely interrupt the caller. We expect answers to address what the OP asked; if you're going to throw a frame challenge in, please make sure to include an actual answer to the OP's question as well. [Here](link)'s an example of an answer that does this well. Also, we [require](whatever link) answers to suggest an interpersonal solution.
Saying to change your phone number isn't really an interpersonal solution. So please, if you can [edit] to include the necessary information, that's wonderful! But unfortunately, as this currently stands, it's not a good fit for our site. Sorry.
(I'm... not sure if that will fit into a single comment.)

JAD
Was wondering that as well :p

10:15 AM
Ah well, if needed, you can split it into two comments :P

10:34 AM
@Mithrandir Which is exactly what NVZ seemed to have been suggesting..
I'm still sad they didn't write an example :/
Anyways, sorry for the delay. IPS question: How to tell the tester that if he wants to code stuff, he needs to learn to think?

JAD
@Tinkeringbell "If you want to code stuff, you need to learn to think"

@JAD Nice and Dutch :P

THINK YOU FOOL
This is why I don't write answers on IPS.

@Mithrandir hahaha ;) I was wondering about asking a question about non-verbally communicating with fellow travellers, I'm still toying with the 'I don't want children' one... (I might just edit down the 'what I've already been doing' part (less research effort?) to make it more answereable?)... That was in one of those links to ELU meta's :
> Misdirection If you "think" you already know the answer, only share some of your research and wait to see what happens. Chances are users will reveal or unearth new information that will overturn your preconceptions. This is good!

JAD
I notice that my first ideas for a lot of answers always come down to just tell them and slap them around the head if they don't

10:43 AM

(I've been spending a lot of time practicing on my bike lately...)
I should head over to Bikes.SE at some point.

@Mithrandir I thought that was more for bike mechanics?

I've left a comment...

@Tinkeringbell answered from experience with a number of friends who never wanted kids (and one who knows it would ust be a very very bad idea)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell bikeSE is mostly about doing it as sport, not as a mean of transportation.

@JAD not 100% true - there are some awesome answers there on commuting

JAD
@RoryAlsop yeah but...

11:42 AM
I know - sport is the fun bit

JAD
commuting by bike in the Netherlands is significantly different to elsewhere

@JAD much more exciting in hilly countries
with no bike lanes
and crazy weather

JAD
you mean nigh suicidal at places, sure
but honestly, I've browsed it a few times, the culture is just so different to what I'm used to. It felt pretty weird

@JAD my shortest cycle commute to work is suicidal in winter. Winding road, no streetlights, 70mph limit, no pavements, various flood-prone areas

@RoryAlsop well that's what I'm interested in :D

11:44 AM
@JAD they are really really helpful there - even for complete beginners

Or - tricking and stuff like that

JAD
@RoryAlsop and see, commuting in amsterdam is entirely opposite

ATM I'm practicing wheelies

JAD
equally suicidal btw

well, I'm more a road bike kind of person. Speed is everything. I don't want to jump off things or up things

JAD
11:45 AM
but everything here rests on the assumption "cars will stop for you"

I was always good at wheelies and endos, back in the first bmx days
@JAD in the UK that would be a very brave asumption
and a very short one

JAD
here in traffic, if there is an accident between a bike and a motorized vehicle

"endos"? Is that what they're called in English? I'm learning in my second language so I don't know all the English terms...

JAD
it's the vehicle's fault

@Mithrandir endo - front wheelie

wow

@RoryAlsop You basically just told me what I'm already doing. Good, validate me :P

here it's more - oh well, you're dead

Yep, they're called "stoppies" here

@Tinkeringbell My entire personality is around openness, and that route has stood me and my friends in very good stead - it may cause short term pain, but that is still less than years of life investment together being broken by the truth
@Mithrandir some call them stoppies here as well

JAD
11:47 AM
@RoryAlsop yep, and it's something you get used to as cyclist
basically, you can assume that the cars around you will at least be aware of you

and such, I wouldn't want to ride a bike in like... London

the law is improving here, but I think the best difference in recent years is the massive growth in head cameras and helmet cams.

@JAD I wouldn't even want to drive in London

JAD
11:48 AM
@RoryAlsop fair enough

@JAD I walk everywhere when I go there

JAD
@RoryAlsop helmets? nobody wears those here, unless it's on a racing bike

@JAD in London it's definitely recommended. As you will get knocked off a lot. And it's a good place to mount your GoPro

JAD
interestingly, I saw some research near my town, where they found that wearing a bike is unsafer, because cars will pass more closely

@JAD yep - saw that. And I think it was discussed on Bicycles.
Also in Edinburgh I don't wear a helmet, as hearing is much more important. I would if I had to cycle in London though

11:50 AM
@JAD city kids do

JAD
@Tinkeringbell oh ye
but there are cities like Leiden that are very much accomodating for bikes
having subways beneath busy crossroads for bikes, so they can skip the lights

@JAD Hahaha oh that is disappointing :)
I'd really would have liked to see those :)

@JAD there are two places I am still on streetview

JAD
one was... 2016 I think? And one was 2015
no, 2015 and 2014

@JAD I've never been on streetview. I spend too much free time at home :P

@AJ I think if you'll sort through our stars, that one is already there :P

A J
lol

JAD
@Tinkeringbell nah

Oh! I posted it before.

@apaul Isn't that better suited to this one? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9519/1599
I think they made that a lot more explicit. And 'Shame on you for writing a +1 comment!'. Means more work for Mith :P

> I think it’s pretty cool how the Chinese made a language entirely out of tattoos.

@JAD Good. :)

12:37 PM
@AJ Hey, that one is original AND funny :P

A J
:D

JAD
so what do you guys think, will my question pass 10k views? :p

> The closest a person ever comes to perfection is when he fills out a job application form.

Okay, so how is this answer: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9521/1599 very different from this one, that was posted earlier? interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9519/1599
@JAD Probably ;) You're still HNQ fodder I believe :P

JAD
hehe, my achievements feed is kinda borked
apparently I now have the privilege to vote down on IPS

12:40 PM
@JAD Might be that they're linking your accounts right now? :P
Jep, you're up as the OP on that question now :)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell yea, so the feeds have been merged as well, so I'm getting notifications from the badges trickling in

@JAD Hahaha, that's fun :)

JAD
although I have two notifications for pupular question badge
because I'm guessing the first notification is the old one on the other account as it got awarded, but now they're coming all over again, with new notifications

@Tinkeringbell Meh, I thought about writing up an answer, but that one was close enough to what I would have said. Just thought that highlighting why that answer works, in a way they hadn't mentioned, was worthwhile.

@apaul Oh, like that :)

grumble grumble comments are more trouble than they're worth grumble grumble

@Mithrandir Didn't notice that little explosion, although I was waiting on the inevitable 'it's not that weird to change your mind' one ;)

SQB
Hey @Mithrandir, I could've sworn you asked this before, but I can't find it. Did you delete it?
Also, hey, how is everybody?

@SQB Hello! Long time no see :) Welcome back :D. I'm fine, how are you?

12:55 PM
@SQB Nope. I've never deleted any of my questions.

SQB
I'm good, although a bit busy.

(On IPS, that is.)

SQB
Haven't had much time for SE.

JAD
@Mariska o/

SQB
@Mithrandir Okay, I really could've sworn you asked that before.

Free no longer needed comment flags on all of the comments underneath my question (I've either edited the stuff in or they're being chatty/answers in comments). Leave the 'don't write answers in comments' one though!

@Tinkeringbell One more bit of clarification. When you go on dates what is the planned "endgame" of that relationship? A quick fling, a forever partner, something you'll stick with as long as it is still good.

@sphennings a 'happily ever after' ?
I'll try and see how to fit that in there, I think it'll end up in the sub section

@Tinkeringbell That's the impression I was getting.

1:12 PM
@sphennings Oh well, if it matches the impression then there might not be a need to edit in? Sounds so cheesy :P
If anyone else asks I can edit it in :P

There's a Gordian Knot answer if you were looking for flings or relationships of middling length.

I'll get Marshal badge today if my none of my flag is declined.

If I manage to rep cap today... (I'll need 23 upvotes on my question for that to happen though)... I'll pass 12k :P
interpersonal.stackexchange.com/questions/9513/….... I'm really tempted to tell them that I'd really like to keep my pills, since I know of a few broken condoms walking around.... :/ Oh well...

Hmm... what do y'all think of having comments that either a.) match one of my regex patterns or b.) are posted after the 'please don't answer in comments' comment is posted posted into this room so more people see them and they can get reviewed?

I'm looking for a meta on writing good answers to link to here, preferably one that focuses on telling that 'how' is an important part of an answer too..

JAD
@Tinkeringbell maybe that's something we have to make?

@JAD But there's already a massive amount of meta's on answer quality on meta ;) I'm remembering one too, just can't find it..

JAD
@Tinkeringbell specific to what we expect?

This no longer answers the question. interpersonal.stackexchange.com/a/9514/31

@Mithrandir Voted to delete it.
