Does everyone see the same ordering of the candidates? I see the same one whenever I refresh the page.

12:30 AM
@Adamant On the election page it says "Candidates are displayed in random order."

@Alex For each person, I guess. I see them in the order they joined.

@Adamant You might be on the Nomination tab, which always shows them in reverse chronological order. If you switch to the Election tab it should randomize them.

When I refresh the order changes.

Not sure if that's better or worse than the Morpheus ad

Not sure, also not sure how the post ads work with changing posts like this one

@AncientSwordRage Wait, can I ask about this one? I've been to two events where professionals gave me some basic first aid for masses training, including CPR and specifics for babies and first aid wound dressing, with dummies that you can try on. But nobody mentioned automatic defibrillators in that context. I think I can only get automatic defibrillators in places where there's someone guarding it, like a station master in metro stations or a guard in malls, so that they can't be stolen,
and those people are trained and have to help if there's an emergency, so I don't see why that training would be useful for me.
(Also the protocol has changed completely in the fifteen years since I got first aid training for the car driving license. It's weird.)

In the UK there are public access defib stations all around the place that anyone can access

@b_jonas They're common in the UK, and AFAIK not guarded...? At least we have one that's usable to everybody at our work place
and they increase survival rate from something like 8% to 50-70%

11:31 AM
I think most are locked, or keypad locked and there's a number you ring to access it. The thing then talks you through what to do as well
I'm not 100% sure though

@TheLethalCarrot it's extremely detailed in doing so

@AncientSwordRage I see. I don't think that's common here, they would be stolen pretty quickly. Though on the other hand, there are some fire extinguishers that are less guarded.

@b_jonas I'd have thought the same here, but they haven't been

@AncientSwordRage Is that 8% including where there's someone who is there and notices and calls for help, just doesn't have an automatic defibrillator around?

@b_jonas 8% for someone doing CPR

11:33 AM
@AncientSwordRage Interesting. Though I still wonder if that's because you find the defibrillators in densely populated areas where an ambulance is more likely to arrive quickly, which is also important.

I might ask about that on the next such event (there's usually one every spring).

@AncientSwordRage They're keypad locked, you have to call 999 to get the code (just checked) and I doubt many people really care to steal one haha

@TheLethalCarrot I see.

@TheLethalCarrot true!

11:34 AM
@TheLethalCarrot Not many people, sure.
@AncientSwordRage That article isn't quite clear on what the numbers are for either. I think it is trying to say that 8% is the survival rate for all cardiac arrest outside hospitals but in UK in general, regardless if there's anyone around who can call for help.

@b_jonas Not necessarily, they're quite common in general around where I live and we're pretty rural

@b_jonas hmmm! Could be. ~8% was roughly the number given to by my First Aid trainers

The links to papers it has are broken, so this isn't easy to tell...

@AncientSwordRage Maybe some main-site questions to be promoted on other sites? Some sites like Artificial Intelligence or Worldbuilding or Robotics might be interested in specific parts of our content, as well as our direct neighbours with scope overlap like Lit and M&TV and Arqade.

The first review cited seems to be available at ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.117.029067

11:40 AM
@Randal'Thor yup that was my intention, but which ones?

The suggested order questions might be quite good, already popular so likely to bring people across

@TheLethalCarrot yeah I was thinking of those, but the only one that came to mind was Discworld, which really is just rehosting an image...

@AncientSwordRage Some possibilities here for promoting on Artificial Intelligence.

The SW and MCU ones would be good to share on at least M&TV

Well, this seems unclear. I don't think I want to dig too deeply about those numbers, but I will try to remember it to ask later.

@Randal'Thor Aye, that looks like a good idea

@b_jonas it's a tricky one
but I think the AED really helps

@TheLethalCarrot Suggested-order is generally our most popular topic in terms of views, but the problem with promoting them on direct neighbour sites is that they might get grumpy because it's the kind of question that they could host too. For example, I could imagine M&TV people going "why should we have an ad to SFF for Star Wars suggested order when we have our own question about it?"

@Randal'Thor good point

@Randal'Thor We do have a lot of comments directing off-topic speculation questions to Worldbuilding. I'm not too familiar with Worldbuilding, I have like one post there, and I don't know how much they actually want those questions. But I think we have some highly active user here who is familiar with Worldbuilding.

@Randal'Thor You could say that about most questions they would be interested in that we could share there though I guess

11:44 AM
might be worth touching base with say @NapoleonWilson rather than just avoiding

@Randal'Thor Artificial Intelligence and Robotics? Are those new? Let me see...
No, they're old sites (4 and 8 years), they're just old in topics I don't care much about. Ok.

@TheLethalCarrot Yeah, it'll be tricky to figure out what we can promote there without stepping on any toes.
Oh, Constructed Languages is another one.
(that's a new site, @b_jonas)

I am familiar with Lit enough that I can direct non-scifi story identification questions there.
@Randal'Thor I did notice that, yes, but that rarely comes up.
I don't recall any closed questions on that topic.
A few open questions, sure:

11:48 AM
@b_jonas This isn't about redirecting off-topic questions, but about finding nice questions of ours that we can promote in community ads on other sites.

@Randal'Thor Oh! I see

@Randal'Thor I don't see the problem with doing it both ways. Is ConLang in the test?
Also @Randal'Thor might be worth you thinking of the sort of stuff we could share on Lit, if anything, and we can use that as a baseline

@Randal'Thor Well sure, I also mention some Lit questions here in chat, when they're about a sci-fi or fantasy work and I think someone here could help

And visa versa, Lit sharing here

@TheLethalCarrot Yep, mulling it.
I think beta sites still don't have their own Community Ads threads, unfortunately ... nothing popped up on Lit meta today.

11:50 AM
Yeah Lit's not in the list
Only 34 sites for the trial

Oh it's not even all graduated sites?
Good, we can feel special then :-P

Sure can haha
I think the none topic overlap sites (like AI and robotics) should be easier to come up with stuff but where we overlap (Lit, M&TV) it's going to get a tad more difficult
There's more content to share but that content could be something they can ask themselves. It might even be worth just going the old route with a generic image ad
We could advertise that we do story id on relevant sites: Arqade, M&TV and Lit (for none written works) but not sure on the best route for that

That could be controversial on sites like A&M where the reaction to "hey, we do story-ID" is often along the lines of "you're dumb and you shouldn't".

True
@Randal'Thor Are you supposed to specify that those are "self" ads?

11:59 AM
@TheLethalCarrot I don't think so? If I understood JNat's OP correctly.
> All answers must be in one of the below formats
followed by 1. image style and 2. specific question

I'll ask because I'm not sure if image ads are only for SFF or if we can use image ads elsewhere too

You also forgot to mention where this should be advertised, both in terms of format and site audience. — JNat ♦ 20 mins ago

@AncientSwordRage Would it be worth setting up a meta post to collect ideas and then posting them to the main question? Chat is quite clumsy for this

@AncientSwordRage Lit is already a bit grumpy about getting too many Tolkien questions ... I'll have to think carefully about what we can welcomely promote there. Good idea on some riddle-related questions for Puzzling. I'm not sure if the Data genitalia question is really how we want to promote our site?
If we have any cosplay questions, Arts & Crafts might be interested ... CreationEdge used to post an ad for A&C here each year, before he quit.
@AncientSwordRage But was that comment from before the post contained an image? If we need to write "sidebar" and "self" even for image posts, then the OP could be clearer.
I think JNat will need to be very patient with us for a while until we get the hang of the new ad system :-)

@TheLethalCarrot the thought crossed my mind, but then that's almost duplicating the point of the community ad meta
@Randal'Thor ahh I didn't read the data question in detail
it just came up when I searched for puzzle
@Randal'Thor there was a placeholder image

12:08 PM
@Randal'Thor Most likely, I've left a comment asking for clarification on this one though
@AncientSwordRage Aye, was thinking more of a place to collect ideas, like leave answers: robotics would be good to feature questions on, here's a selection... just so it's a bit less clumsy than chat but not really needed

Rand al'ThorWith the new Community Ads system for 2021, we now have the ability to choose specific questions on SFF.SE (no need to make custom images for them) and get them promoted in the sidebar or topbar of other SE sites. Obviously this is a nice opportunity to get some of our best content out there for ...

Nice, would it not be better to have an answer per site?
Including SFF
Avoid edit clashes then

Eh, will get hard to keep track that way.
The problem with doing this on the original JNat post is that it requires a separate answer for each proposal, so I thought let's lump everything together.

I figured an answer per site was the best middle ground but either or works

1:02 PM
@TheLethalCarrot except where we get a post that applies to multiple sites?

FuzzyBootsThe deleted answer here reads like a copyright infringement notice, although I'm confused as to what could be considered infringing. I did not try following the link... was it detected malicious?

I liked the idea when I read the first meta post about it back when it was posted but I didn't quite realise how powerful these inter site ads probably are going to be

Still thinking about what we could propose for M&TV or Lit ... I guess questions about book-to-film adaptation differences are on-topic for all three sites? If they aren't for M&TV, that could make a good type of question to promote, but I think they are.

@SQB Right, but ... that doesn't really relate to this situation. They're showing a picture of an actual piece of fabric and then asking where to get it. Clearly it exists... it's real fabric, in a photo. :)

Oh, I agree with that absolutely.
Actually, @Catija, would you like to answer that question? The current answer isn't a perfect match for the fabric.

@TheLethalCarrot I don't think your Alice clones question would be a good fit for Arqade, as that's about the movies and not the games.

I did hesitate with some of the cross media questions, like with some of the Witcher ones

The other Resident Evil question is a great one for Arqade, but the movies are so different compared to the games that a movies-based RE question doesn't seem like an interesting one for Arqade.

2:58 PM
I was thinking along the lines that if you're interested in the games you may have some interest in the movies as well so it might be worth promoting it

OKprogrammerIn the 2017 Justice League movie, Victor is talking to his father about how he has turned into something he doesn’t understand, as seen below in this clip: The exact quote is found below. Victor: Every day I wake up different...modified. Victor flies into the air...

In general, sure, but the RE movies are so different than the games that they're practically different universes.
I say this as someone who has interest in some of both the games and movies, but I could see how a gamer might not care so much about the movies.

I agree with you as someone from the same stance :)

I'm not necessarily opposed to that question for Arqade, I'd just rank it very low compared to the others (and compared to the other RE one).
Mainly I just wanted to point out that the question was strictly about the movies in case you missed that.

Feel free to remove it if you want though, I didn't exactly put a lot of effort in to finding them and the list was meant to be a bit overkill so it would be easier to trim some out
I got that :)
Have you played Village?

3:09 PM
No, I played the original RE2 and I watched movies of the remake (and for RE3) on Youtube.
I don't have much time for games these days, and RE isn't one of my main franchises anyway.

Gotcha, was gonna say if you've played RE4 you'd probably enjoy it

I'll probably watch a movie of it at some point.
My main interest in the RE games sort of ended after RE3.
But I've seen clips of Village and it looks intriguing enough to watch.

Probably a bit more immersive to watch, first person, better graphics and has a decent story

Sounds like I should watch it, then, though it might be a while because I've got Assassin's Creed Valhalla in my queue ahead of it, and that one seems to be really long. There's a 23 hour movie of just the base game of it.

That's the problem with open world games
I've given up on AC for now, was certainly my favourite game series for a while but they sucked all my interest out of it when they moved away from the main story line

3:20 PM
It's considerably longer even compared to the other games. I think the Odyssey movie was 12 hours and Origins was 9.
Yeah, I much preferred the old school AC games.
AC Unity is actually the most recent game I've bought.
My only interest in AC now is the story, and even then it's not as interesting as it used to be.

No they seem to have moved more towards generic open world rather than building the story
I refunded Unity; I read the book first for it and then played it and the characters just didn't seem anywhere near as good as they were in the book and it put me off
It had a very rocky launch as well which I know put quite a few off of it

I haven't read the book, but I agree the characters weren't the greatest. The gameplay was pretty good, though (far fewer problems now), and I thought the French Revolution was a great setting.

If I didn't already have a massive backlog I might've waited for it to go on sale to pick it up but oh well haha

Q: Was Hermione the only student in Arithmancy and Ancient Runes?

Dheeraj KumarThis was the exam schedule of third-year students in PoA Monday 9 o'clock, Arithmancy 9 o'clock, Transfiguration Lunch 1 o'clock, Charms 1 o'clock, Ancient Runes Now, both Transfiguration and Charms were core subjects. So everyone in the third year had to attend them. This means either Hermione...

Q: Did Worf consider any race honorable?

Samuel Edwin WardI'm currently re-watching Star Trek: The Next Generation, and between that and Deep Space Nine it seems like Worf finds a lot of species dishonorable. "The Romulans are without honor," "The Cardissians have no honor," I'm sure there are others. Has Worf ever described any people or any group as...

@AncientSwordRage I'd say any high quality video game lore questions are a good choice.
I don't think that narrows it down much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Does "high quality" modify "questions" or "video game?"

high quality (video game (lore(question)))

I would assume "question". A good question about a bad game is still a good question.
(high-quality ((video game lore) question))

SQB

I think it modifies lore. So only questions about video games with high quality lore.

It should modify "question". We want high quality questions even if they are about low quality works that have low quality lore.

Q: Did we ever find out how The Master achieved his great anti-Gallifrey goal in series 12?

J. MiniIn series 12, The Master claims that he has and later scenes in that series support this. Did we ever get any information on how this stunning achievement was made?

After all, we do allow questions about the Star Wars sequel trilogy. :)

@Null I just wanted to get that on the record. :)

Q: How did Missy survive?

AnonymousAt the season finale of season 10, How, then, did she regenerate into the latest Master?

Out of curiosity, why were my initial Babylon 5 questions having so many views and upvotes and now they aren't as popular?

@Anonymous I can't see a huge discrepancy or trend in the scores of your questions. There's a lot of luck-of-the-draw involved, especially when some questions hit HNQ and others don't.

@Randal'Thor There were 3 questions that had 1k views, 1k views, 2k views.

Oh, views are definitely a chance factor, even more than votes.
If a question goes to the HNQ list, it gets clicks and eyeballs from all over the HNQ network within a few days.
If it doesn't, you have to wait for the slow trickle of people Googling the same query.

Q: Why are there so many oranges in Sheridan's quarters?

AnonymousI've noticed that there are a very large number of oranges in Sheridan's quarters for some reason, and I also noticed a few in Garibaldi's (although Zach did ask, are you on a diet? hinting that it might not be ordinary). It doesn't seem that it was referenced in any special way or explained as ...

6:14 PM
@Anonymous That went HNQ.

How do questions become HNQ?

"algorithms"

Basically, by getting a fast answer which gets upvoted fast, or several fast answers.

A: What are the criteria for questions to be selected for Hot Network Questions?

David FullertonBasically the same formula used to select the questions shown in the "hot" tab on a site. We have a few tweaks: Successive questions from the same site are penalized by increasing amounts. So, the first question from SO in the list gets multiplied by 1.0, the second by 0.98, the third by 0.96, ...

^ long version

6:29 PM
Darn, nobody wants to upvote my new question... I guess that's not going to be an HNQ.

Historically, asking for upvotes in SFF chat bears a risk of getting you downvotes instead ;-)
That's probably the old SFF chat though.

I didn't ask for upvotes...
@Randal'Thor Uh-oh, a little bit of SO culture is leaking into our site! ;)

Well, complaining about no upvotes is virtually indistinguishable...

I was just saying that it's not going to be an HNQ.

@Anonymous very little does with regularity

6:36 PM
It's not instantaneous either, I don't believe. It takes several hours, so that controversial questions (lots of views, lots of activity) can get weeded out first.

Yes, there's now an 8-hour lower bound for questions to be admitted to the HNQ.
Used to be that a question could go HNQ at any time, even within minutes, but a couple of years ago they put various limitations to try to make it fairer.

And a maximum HNQ stay length which helps a lot

I got more reputation here in a month then I got on SO in four years, with about the same amount of effort.

7:14 PM
SO doesn't have an HNQ, right?

SO does, I think MO doesn't.

aye

@Skooba If SO didn't have them, they'd never had become a problem the SE staff would bet a single eye on. ;-)
But if you got highly professional programmers busy with advancing the tech world and they see something awry on the sideboard, all hell breaks loose.

@NapoleonWilson oh, so they just have their own special one
I meant their question don't show up in the HNQ on the main SE page, not that they don't see the side bar HNQ.

Ah, technically they can show up, but they have a really high threshold to meet.

7:29 PM
ooh okay

Actually, I'm seeing one in the sidebar just right now.

7:51 PM
@NapoleonWilson Feature request: make SO like MO and just display tags and badges in the sidebar there instead.
But then we'd probably lose a lot of our userbase. So many people on other SE sites originally started on SO.

I thought SciFi.SE was rather happy with the HNQ, too.

I don't glance at it that often, and I have no idea about the relative traffic of this site vs. others, but I often see more than one scifi.se question on the HNQ at a time.
Given >100 sites and only 20-odd questions, that's decent exposure for this site.

8:06 PM
There are 100 HNQ questions at any one time I believe
the list shown on sites is just a randomised cut of the full list

Q: Ex Machina: The first physically frail robots?

releseabeIn countless other science fiction the creators rely on obedience from their superhumanly-strong machines. I think it was argued in West World that the machines had to be strong ironically to protect humans from harm. But it seems clear to me that Nathan in Ex Machina deliberately made his robots...

@Marvin Are there others? Almost certainly. Should we treat this as a question?
