I've been debating with a hard core Star Wars friend who loves repeating Yoda's "Do or do not do, there is no try" knowledge.
I tried to explain that the DO (B) and DO NOT DO (C), are end results, you have to attempt to reach them by TRYING (A). You can't have not tried something but still reach ...
I found this site cause a buddy of mine are starting to read some fantasy series together and talk about them and there is a book I have fond memories for but I can't think of many details and especially not the name of the series. I read it nearly 20 years ago when I was 8 or 9 I believe.
The de...
there is a show where this kid imagines himself being in a turnament but he was dreaming and his dad says he will train him if he cleans up for 2 years and he is about to finish the time but his dad says 4 years and for him to sort the plushies so he does that but he then has to deliver a letter ...
A short SF story with an anthropologic angle. A team of anthropologists devised an experiment placing, as I recall it, 100 babies on an island (tended initially by machines). The island was wired with cameras and microphones to observe kids as they grew up (ala Truman Show). The kids developed a ...
I am about to buy clothes to cosplay Pansy Parkinson- but... what were clothes like in the wizarding world? Parkinson is a blood supremacist so she wouldn't wear muggle clothes, and since so many wizards are pureblood, what do they wear? is it linked to a specific time?
The Corman movie has a man (and his daughter) living in a well-stocked house after a nuclear attack. However, unexpected people show up. In both movies, the "prepper" is ex-navy and Goodman even physically resembles the guy in the 1955 flick. But I see no mention that the newer flick was inspired...
I am looking for this book that I am trying to identify from memory:
it is a sci-fi novel taking place in the near-future
it was definitely printed before 2005, as I remembered borrowing it from my polytechnic library and I left there before 2005
Rainforests are now a global treasure, wars and pe...
If the book is Wonderful flight to the Mushroom Planet, by Eleanor Cameron, you can borrow a copy online at Archive.org. There is a related book Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet by the same author. Both books were written in the 1950s. I recall reading them, they were fun, have no recollection if ...
Looks like NAA to me, ignoring the if it consists of multiple stabs in the dark, "have no recollection if they have the story you are seeking"... seems to be more of a comment on what that person likes/d
Where is the original Emperor Palpatine chair from Return of the Jedi (1983) Movie?
There is neither in the Star Wars Museum nor in Star Wars Exhibition
So I was wondering, often when someone is reading another person's mind, they hear a voice of some sort. But some people think in pictures and most deaf people won't even know their own voice, so does that make them immune to mind-readers? Or does mind-reading not even work like that at all?
including that flash being able to run above the speed of light by a lot. and goku having the ability to move 33 trillion mph.{about 33,000 times the speed of light}.
@Spencer It's really down to the implementation details. Every call from managed code to native (unmanaged) code is a potential source of problems.
@AncientSwordRage I'm not sure I understand what you're describing. "Just bin stuff" sounds like you're talking about something like Java's classic mark-and-sweep GC algorithm, where a positive test for "still in use" is made. But "let the program recover" sounds like use-after-free is permitted?
If I'm writing code in Java I never have to "deal with GC," it just happens.
I wasn't sure if you meant "recover" as in the program was able to grab it back with the original contents still in, or "recover" as in it got re-added to the free pool.
I was reading Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them, and I found this quote:
“Werewolves spend most of their time as humans (whether wizard or
Muggle).”
(Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
Does this mean, if a muggle is bitten by a werewolf, and somehow survives (rescued by wizards, the...
@AncientSwordRage That's more of a life expectancy thingy though. Just like your life expectancy goes up the longer you live, the longer an object hangs around, the more likely it is to keep hanging around.
There aren't any take-backs in Java; once you drop something it's gone.
(Which makes sense if you think about it, since there aren't any pointers that you can modify to point to something else, or any pointer math to get you to memory you aren't already directly referencing.)
I know my dad had a copy of Dhalgren in his library, and I've heard good things about Stars In My Pocket Like Grains of Sand, but I'm not sure I've read anything by Delany.
Interesting - Babel-17 goes the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis route. The page on SWH is missing the two Heinlein examples (Gulf, Stranger in a Strange Land) as well as the movie Arrival.
Yeah some SF authors can get pretty far out there. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was so weird that I'm not even entirely sure that Blade Runner should be considered a proper adaptation, given how incredibly normal and coherent it is.
During Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we see in Stan Lee's cameo that he was the same character in all his appearances, and that he reports the world's activity to the Watchers. Stan Lee's character looks the same age in all his appearances, except for his cameo in Avengers: Endgame:
You might ...
Yoda says to Palpatine:
Yoda: At an end your rule is. And not short enough it was. If so
powerful you are, why leave?
Palpatine is not going anywhere then why did Yoda question him about leaving in this scene?
After I wrote my latest question the "similar questions" box showed me 11 questions it thought were similar. None were actually similar in terms of content, but 3 of them were my own questions.
I'm not sure if I read this in a magazine or anthology; I think I read it around 2010, but it could have been from much earlier.
The viewpoint character is a member of a secret organization, but I don't recall their purpose or membership. They could have been illuminati or they could have been i...
I only read a review of this Japanese film and that was at least 20 years ago. From what little I can remember it involved a modern Japanese army unit that is somehow transported back in time. Their unique solution for being stranded in the past is to cause, using their modern weapons, as much ha...
Trilogy of novels (I am almost certain they were paperback originals), by an American author and published in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Nazis develop flying saucers & flee Germany at the end of WWII. They relocate to either the North Pole or the South Pole (can't remember which) and are thus...
I wanna know if Chaos, such as Cream's friend, Cheese, are of any significance to the lore of Chaos the monster in the anime Sonic X, or even the Chaos Emeralds.
