Q: Is Yoda committing a fallacy?

Beach BumI've been debating with a hard core Star Wars friend who loves repeating Yoda's "Do or do not do, there is no try" knowledge. I tried to explain that the DO (B) and DO NOT DO (C), are end results, you have to attempt to reach them by TRYING (A). You can't have not tried something but still reach ...

Q: Fantasy series where magic was done by saying what you wanted

TheCorvusI found this site cause a buddy of mine are starting to read some fantasy series together and talk about them and there is a book I have fond memories for but I can't think of many details and especially not the name of the series. I read it nearly 20 years ago when I was 8 or 9 I believe. The de...

Q: Short SF story of an island of kids growing up observed by anthropologists

QosmonautA short SF story with an anthropologic angle. A team of anthropologists devised an experiment placing, as I recall it, 100 babies on an island (tended initially by machines). The island was wired with cameras and microphones to observe kids as they grew up (ala Truman Show). The kids developed a ...

Q: What is fashion in the wizarding world?

JuneI am about to buy clothes to cosplay Pansy Parkinson- but... what were clothes like in the wizarding world? Parkinson is a blood supremacist so she wouldn't wear muggle clothes, and since so many wizards are pureblood, what do they wear? is it linked to a specific time?

Q: Was Corman's The Day the World Ended cited as inspiration for 10 Cloverfield Lane?

releseabeThe Corman movie has a man (and his daughter) living in a well-stocked house after a nuclear attack. However, unexpected people show up. In both movies, the "prepper" is ex-navy and Goodman even physically resembles the guy in the 1955 flick. But I see no mention that the newer flick was inspired...

Q: Need help to ID this sci fi novel

RonaldI am looking for this book that I am trying to identify from memory: it is a sci-fi novel taking place in the near-future it was definitely printed before 2005, as I remembered borrowing it from my polytechnic library and I left there before 2005 Rainforests are now a global treasure, wars and pe...

A: 1950-60s children's book about a boy whose neighbor builds a spaceship and he flies it to outer space

QosmonautIf the book is Wonderful flight to the Mushroom Planet, by Eleanor Cameron, you can borrow a copy online at Archive.org. There is a related book Stowaway to the Mushroom Planet by the same author. Both books were written in the 1950s. I recall reading them, they were fun, have no recollection if ...

I'm inclined due to how it starts 'if ...'

Looks like NAA to me, ignoring the if it consists of multiple stabs in the dark, "have no recollection if they have the story you are seeking"... seems to be more of a comment on what that person likes/d

@TheLethalCarrot thanks for confirming

I hate memory leaks
It's the bane of my life at the minute

10:12 AM
@TheLethalCarrot I get those, but it mostly just means I need more coffee

If only coffee would fix it

@TheLethalCarrot a problem coffee can't fix is a problem indeed

Why are you pouring coffee on the server!?
Oh, this isn't how you fix a memory leak...? :/
That's a silly comic strip idea

@TheLethalCarrot feels like a dilbert

Problem is there's a few memory leaks all working together to cause a bigger problem... I've fixed some of them
One is caused by .Net as well so finding the fix for that was a pain

10:28 AM
@TheLethalCarrot ouch
I've not used .Net, but I've also not heard good things

It's good, all our programs nowadays are C# so .Net, but it can be a massive pain in the neck sometimes
This isn't the first time we've found a .Net memory leak either

@TheLethalCarrot memory leaks are the sort of not good things I've heard

Q: How does mind reading actually work?

Foolish LemonSo I was wondering, often when someone is reading another person's mind, they hear a voice of some sort. But some people think in pictures and most deaf people won't even know their own voice, so does that make them immune to mind-readers? Or does mind-reading not even work like that at all?

@TheLethalCarrot And garbage collection was supposed to free us all from memory leaks forever...

Well it can't do that if you don't tell it you're done with something

Don't some GC schemes just bin old stuff, and let the program recover if it's still in use?

Not sure

4:46 PM
@Spencer It's really down to the implementation details. Every call from managed code to native (unmanaged) code is a potential source of problems.
@AncientSwordRage I'm not sure I understand what you're describing. "Just bin stuff" sounds like you're talking about something like Java's classic mark-and-sweep GC algorithm, where a positive test for "still in use" is made. But "let the program recover" sounds like use-after-free is permitted?

@DavidW not sure really
I'm a long time JavaScript dev, and I no longer have to deal with GC

Well, only in the sense that any other managed language doesn't have to deal with it.

Well, I did learn about Java's mark and sweep a long time ago
I was just guessing that the 'recovery' bit is possible these days

If I'm writing code in Java I never have to "deal with GC," it just happens.
I wasn't sure if you meant "recover" as in the program was able to grab it back with the original contents still in, or "recover" as in it got re-added to the free pool.

So the former
Java has various levels of "Are you sure you don't want this?" AFAIK
something like that

Q: Is there such a thing as a muggle werewolf?

avaI was reading Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them, and I found this quote: “Werewolves spend most of their time as humans (whether wizard or Muggle).” (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) Does this mean, if a muggle is bitten by a werewolf, and somehow survives (rescued by wizards, the...

@AncientSwordRage That's more of a life expectancy thingy though. Just like your life expectancy goes up the longer you live, the longer an object hangs around, the more likely it is to keep hanging around.
There aren't any take-backs in Java; once you drop something it's gone.
(Which makes sense if you think about it, since there aren't any pointers that you can modify to point to something else, or any pointer math to get you to memory you aren't already directly referencing.)

5:52 PM
I know my dad had a copy of Dhalgren in his library, and I've heard good things about Stars In My Pocket Like Grains of Sand, but I'm not sure I've read anything by Delany.

@AncientSwordRage Empire Star

Interesting - Babel-17 goes the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis route. The page on SWH is missing the two Heinlein examples (Gulf, Stranger in a Strange Land) as well as the movie Arrival.

I found Dhalgren incoherent.
The Fall of the Towers is pretty good

Yeah some SF authors can get pretty far out there. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep was so weird that I'm not even entirely sure that Blade Runner should be considered a proper adaptation, given how incredibly normal and coherent it is.

Q: Why does Stan Lee look younger in Avengers: Endgame?

6:57 PM
I was able to review a close vote. You're having problems?

Oh, I was too.
But people are apparently not being notified of reviews.
Carrot has been around, but took over an hour to handle a Suggested Edit review, and nobody else handled it in that time either. That's unheard of.

Q: Why did Yoda question Palpatine that way?

Louis MarieYoda says to Palpatine: Yoda: At an end your rule is. And not short enough it was. If so powerful you are, why leave? Palpatine is not going anywhere then why did Yoda question him about leaving in this scene?

7:33 PM
I must have a distinct style of writing.
After I wrote my latest question the "similar questions" box showed me 11 questions it thought were similar. None were actually similar in terms of content, but 3 of them were my own questions.
Things that make you go "hmmm."
