Q: A human settled alien planet where even children are issued blasters and must be good at using them to kill constantly attacking lifeforms

Mark WoodMy father told me he read this story when he was young (I think). He was born in 1935 and is passed away now. He didn't remember the title or author but it impressed him.

Is it just me, or is emphasized text in a quote block the wrong colour?

Q: Vulnera Sanentur : A Counter-Curse or a General-Spell?

Infinity MilestoneIn What is the counter-curse to Sectumsempra?, the accepted answer has the following lines, So about all we know of this spell is that it's an incantation that sounds almost like song and that it apparently needs to be performed three times to be effective. Also, on the Harry Potter Fandom, "....

Q: What did Gandalf mean by "first light of the fifth day"?

user3453281I don't know how this one goes in the books, but in the movie Gandalf says: Look to my coming on the first light of the fifth day, at dawn look to the east. Does that imply that the battle of Hornburg lasted 5 days (it seemed to last only one night) or did he mean 5 days starting immediately

Q: What was Aquaman's motivation for killing Black Manta's father

teheh...In Aquaman, after Black Manta's father was dead, Black Manta gets revenge on Aquaman. At times I feel like Aquaman just killed Manta's father for the sake of it. So why did Aquaman kill Black Manta's father?

Q: Did Humans and Minbari merge into a single "first-one like" species?

SpacePhoenixIn one episode we see that humans have evolved into first ones like beings. Can't remember where I read it but apparently Minbari also evolve into first ones like beings. We know that Minbari souls are being born into human bodies, and some human DNA exists in some Minbari. In the episode where w...

Q: Is there a correct way to setup a Stargate?

ShadeIs there a correct way to set up a Stargate, i.e. one side that is top and one that is down? If so, is it marked in any way? If so, what would happen if it were setup the wrong way around? If not, how does the Stargate know which direction is down?

Q: Why are most west fantasy novels set in the middle ages or if in modern time magic is hidden?

GridlockSomething I have often wondered about in a lot Western fantasy literature if magic is a part of society it is either stuck in the middle ages, Or if it does take place in modern time, those who can do magic are hidden from normal people and great pains are taken to keep the magical society hidde...

Q: Novel with main character able to mind-link to computers, a female telepath, a computer entity and a healing priest

TonnyI'm trying to identify a novel I read around 1990 give or take 5 years. It was fairly short (maybe 120 pages or so) and I read it in Dutch, but it is most likely a translation of an English original. I'm very vague on the story content, but there are a couple of specific details that stuck in my ...

@Marvin Because creating a scientific/technological society based on magic is too much work for most fantasy authors? :-P
@Marvin Because that would make it too hard to hide the massively aristocratic/anti-democratic tone of most fantasy?
@Marvin Because if magic is ubiquitous and anyone can do it, then there's nothing to make the plucky, downtrodden, indomitable, disadvantaged author-insert special?

You forgot "Because there is no know magic in actual reality?" If magic did exist, then obviously it is hidden. Though there's plenty of parallel universe fantasy where magic is not hidden and the universe is mostly like our own. Laurell K Hamilton for example.

Q: What is the significance of the book title "Swords against Death"?

eirikdaudeIn the introduction to Audible version of Swords against Death by Fritz Leiber, Neil Gaiman states (about 1 minute into the "Opening Credits"): The significance of the title of the book will become more apparent as the series goes on. Especially in the later books Ice Magic and The Knight and Kn...

@Donald.McLean That's not nearly cynical enough. :D

Well, I'm not a particularly cynical person. My wife actually calls me "Eternal Sunshine" (and we call her Princess Raincloud).

3:07 PM
Whereas I'm a professional software developer; being cynical is part of the job description.
For example: The only thing worse than throwing away your codebase and starting from scratch is not doing so. The converse is also true.

As a professional software developer myself, I assure you that cynicism is absolutely NOT part of the job description. :-)

Ah, but (1) who is your target market, and (2) what is your platform?
I'm guessing you've never had to spend the better part of a decade maintaining support for IE.
(Just to cite a single example.)

We have to support whatever browsers IT allows the users to run, and they have very firm limits on how far they're willing to go. Thank goodness.

How many times have you had to drop a project that was 90% complete because the CEO had a brainstorm, or the new owners saw it would compete with one of their products?

We don't have that kind of dilbertian political shenanigans here for the most part. I think that NASA oversight helps to prevent some of the more stupid crap that happens in conventional businesses.

@Donald.McLean That wouldn't surprise me at all. Every time I hear someone say that business is more efficient than government, I realize I'm listening to someone who has never actually worked for a modern corporation.

Mike SThe first three Spider-Man movies set in the MCU are called Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. user137368metahumans have powers. Humans have average strength, speed, etc.

@JackBNimble I don't think they listen to criticism on MSE either...
@fez There are so many things wrong with it.

I don't review very often. I went and looked when he said it, and I'm not sure I even notice a difference.

Among the things I have yet to complain about: The question title (which is all that's displayed by default when reviewing an answer) is surrounded by a bunch of visually noisy junk, so it's hard to scan to. And it's even worse on mobile, where the question text is like 6pt high!

That's a lot of pt.

I don't need to know that the OP has 6 gold badges in order to review an answer to the question.

Hopefully the badges DO sway someone from reviewing it harshly. I'm banking on that.

8:47 PM
Heh. Sorry, if you're answering your user info is buried at the end like always. It's the user info of whoever asked the question that's front and centre, more prominent than the navigation buttons.
So, maybe you need to only answer questions posted by people with lots of rep/badges, so the halo effect carries over to your answers. :)

Excellent strategy.

Since when is the past participle of "broadcast" "broadcasted?" Is that an americanism?

I've heard it both ways.
It was first broadcast on 1/1/2011. They broadcasted it over the airwaves.

9:11 PM
I don't like it. "broadcasted it" is particularly dysphonious. (If I may construct my own portmanteau.)

@DavidW feels like one of those new fangled tenses, aspects oand moods

Q: Searching for a short story about a man nostalgic for robot teachers

Emeline BruléI'm searching for a short story (it's not Asimov's The Fun they Had) about a man who buys a vintage robot teacher and develops a relationship (I think the robot recites Shakespeare, and he spends more and more time with it, instead of with his family). I also seem to recall that school is now hap...
