Q: humanity as a galactic ring species

Anton SherwoodShort story, published before 1976. Humanity has spread along the circumference of the galaxy (apparently avoiding the core), and diversified. The main characters are a married couple of a hairless race. They charter(?) a ship to follow evidence of alien intelligence (humanity having never foun...

Q: In your count do you include H.M.S. & U.S.S. ENTERPRISE & SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE?

John A ConnellNone of the answers list the H.M.S. & U.S.S. ENTERPRISE nor the NASA SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE.........but in the television show ENTERPRISE opening credits it shows H.M.S. ENTERPRISE & NASA SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE. The U.S.S. ENTERPRISE was instrumental in WWII and was around in history BEFORE ...

Q: Violent televised Football game played in an area of the actual city. Very similar to Rollerball

NJohnnyNovel from 70s or 80s. Pretty sure it was a Hardback (checked out from library) in English. The setting was very similar to the Rollerball (1975) movie. The broadcast of the show is the "Bread and Circuses" used to control the masses. I get vibes that the title was something like KillBall or Ki...

Q: TV serie/movie identification: bad guy turns to be the good one and good guy turns to be the bad one

ArchaonI remember a sci-fi show/movie as a child where a kid/teen and a generic hero traveled to other planets, one was a mushroom people one, other was a giant people one, can't remember more. They were always followed by a dark red robot/suit. This enemy at some point was revealed to be the real good ...

Q: Sci fi novel about reptilian civilization

Karen T.I remember reading a novel about the discovery of an ancient reptilian race discovered in a subterranean cave system. I thought it was written by Robert Silverburg but can't find it in his list of books. I think it was a YA novel. It was probably written in the 50's, 60's or early 70's.

Q: How can a single-planet species pose a threat to the Federation?

NachtMy dad had this question and I told him scifi.SE would have an answer. The United Federation of Planets contains 150 planets-worth of civilisations. This includes Humans, Vulcans, and many others. Presumably they would have a massive capacity for producing warships if need be. The Klingons are ...

@Adamant I gave my undelete vote, although I do feel like this question could be a bit more focused. Presumably, one of the writers could chime in (I know Valorum has had good luck Twitting them) or some other material might elaborate on it. But as it is, the central question of "Except, what does the curse really mean for Earps?" is a bit vague.
Like, are we asking why they stick around? How it affects their personal life? More information on the mechanics of it?

Q: Who are these characters/superheroes in the posters from Chris's room in Family Guy?

ShreedharIn Chris's room in Family Guy, we see some posters of superheroes. I could identify one of them as Triton from Marvel comics                                 But I'm not able to recognize the three other characters (marked in red boxes in images below) Are these actual fictional characters th...

@Stormblessed Roombaed, OP is Adamant
@Jenayah oh is it really old? How’d you find it?
Adamant posted the link literally three messages before yours asking what it was about :P

When I see completely worthless edits like this one bumping questions (even more when it's the OP making the edit...), I think edits that add a new line without actually changing the display shouldn't pass through.

Q: That crystalline tower of Another Life

EleanorThe crystalline tower in Another Life reminds me strongly of a similar tower in a sci book I bought off Amazon a good while ago. What is the book? I remember that the tower sits in a valley and that others have been detected on other planets.

@Jenayah I can't even tell that the linebreaks have changed; the only way to tell is to inspect the cell contents in the developer tools! (I agree that any non-visible/non-semantic edit shouldn't bump the post, BTW.)
(That includes changing "http://" to "https://" among other things.)
@DavidW a faster way to tell is to try to edit both
you can see the changes in the edit box, but the display is the same
@DavidW at least that changes something
But it doesn't change anything that affects the meaning of the post.
I might even go so far as to say that a re-tag shouldn't even bump a post for someone who isn't watching that tag.
@DavidW True. And I agree that one shouldn't bump just for the sake of HTTPSing. Still, HTTP presents security issues, so that's at least an edit worth something. Line breaks between bullets that don't change the display? Redacted to comply with "be nice" policy.
@DavidW mmmmh, on SFF that might work, on smaller tags on sites like SO, you'd probably still want smaller tags to be monitored by the community at large, not just the few watching it
Oh, I'm not saying we shouldn't (as opportunity and resources permit) update http:// to https:// where possible. All I'm saying is that change doesn't add anything to the question/answer that deserves to be on the front page demanding people's attention.
@Jenayah I did qualify that with "might" because it just occurred to me as I was typing the previous response, and I hadn't really thought through the implications yet.
@Jenayah I guess what I'm saying is that there is a class of edits that we shouldn't discourage (like https://) but that don't deserve to be bumped to the front page.
has been a problem forever as far as I can tell
18:44
@Jenayah Congratulations! You just became part of the SFF.se institutional memory. :)
That a new fancy way to tell people they're old? :P
"YKYBHTLW..."
when you know this abbreviation for starters :P
That was, actually, the gist of the initialism the first time I saw it! :D ("...WYCRTTFTYSI" as best I recall.)
I'm kidding, you're not old. You've been young for longer than us, is all ;)
19:24
@Jenayah what changed?????
Side-by-side markdown has nothing
@Stormblessed try to edit both versions, you'll see
just you know, don't actually register the edit
look at the "core" post

@Jenayah You jest, but it's so true. I still keep thinking that some day I'll feel like a "grown up," not that I really know what that means, but it definitely hasn't happened yet!
It doesn't hurt that on group rides this season I keep walking off the front of the pack if I'm pulling up a hill. (Yeah it's a bit of a brag, but I don't think I've been this strong in 10 years. So I don't feel like I'm getting old.)

Q: How did Han Solo use the Maw Cluster to beat the Kessel Run?

ChromanyxWe know that Solo made the Kessel Run in "12" parsecs by skirting around the Maw Cluster (with the help of his Class 0.5 modified hyperdrive), but how exactly does the physics of it work? Did he use one of the black holes of the Maw Cluster in a high-risk gravity assist, like I suspect, or was ...
