Avengers: Endgame
The only movie where the Avengers actually avenge.

They do in AoU no?
I mean they sort of do it in all the main films just not to the main villains
In The Avengers they harm the Chitauri for the invading the planet which could count as avenging
In AoU they kill Ultron for betraying them
In IW they kill a few of Thanos' children and lots of Chitauri for their part in Thanos' plan and invading Earth/taking Strange prisoner etc.

That's kinda in the heat of the action though
First movie, planet wasn't invaded yet, they were protecting it not avenging it

In IW killing Corvus Glaive wasn't in the heat of the action

Second movie kinda

11:20 AM
I mean I'm bending the term and using it loosely to get it to make sense haha
But they certainly avenge in AoU at least in my books

Third movie and CG, true but it happened like seconds after
Endgame was more avenging as MINOR SPOILER some time as passed

Time isn't really involved in the definition of avenging though

Revenge is best served cold ;)

Just ask The Revengers

They avenged Coulson in the first film, though. That was the entire point.

11:26 AM
Indeed.

But of course it makes no sense for Fury to name them "avengers" and then for everyone to be surprised at the PR debacle of promoting vigilante justice.

Just blame Carol for that

@Jenayah Exactly.
If you're trying to stop something bad from happening, you're a Defender.
Not an Avenger.

Can someone help? I'm putting together a question about AMATW villain but I can't for the life of me understand what the actress is saying and auto-subtitles don't recgonise the words as well :/

They were barely motivated by "avenging" Coulson (who wasn't even dead). There were mostly motivated by fulfilling his vision: "Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea, in heroes."

"We don't know, the way she left off..." and I don't understand what she says after that.

She disappeared into the something.
Ahhhh
"She didn't disappear into thin air, did she?"

@Jenayah "she didn't disappear into thin air, did she?"
jinx!

12:29 PM
Thanks!

The /r/ is de-emphasized, the /d/ becomes /dʒ/.

Well, that doesn't help me much more actually, but still

What's the question?
What happens to her after AMATW?

And what is the interviewer saying? "Oh okay, we'll ____ thank you very much"
@TheLethalCarrot yeah

And the /e/ becomes more of an /æ/.
Add to that her talking quickly and it's very hard to understand.

12:32 PM
Considering that if she got snapped, then... you know, and if she didn't, she... well, you also know.

@Jenayah See you again then.

@Adamant yeah... What's the accent by the way? Sounds a bit like what I heard when I was watching Misfits
@Adamant still hard to understand, but thanks

When the more typical pronunciation would be /wəl si ju əgɛn/.

I'd say her accent must be Yorkshire, which is in England.
But possibly with some Norwegian or Nigerian influence from her parents.
@Jenayah Oh, btw. "Antagonist, not villain." ;)

12:38 PM
@Adamant if you want, it doesn't appear in the question anyway ;)

The IPA is great. If English were written in IPA, second language learners would have much less trouble with it.

Nope?

What better way to save a patient, than by biting them? Isn't that the plot of Twilight?

Ooooh so that's what they're trying to do in TWD.

1:26 PM
@NapoleonWilson Ah... lol, that explains it

Well Brits, searching for this taught me you guys have a lot of nutjobs actually convinced Queen Elizabeth is a reptilian

@Jenayah They put those videos on YouTube Kids here at one point

What?! xD

ahahahahah

1:28 PM
According to a Saturday report in Business Insider, searching for the term “UFO” on YouTube kids turned up a video purporting “to show a UFO shooting at a chemtrail.” The suggested followups for that video featured a number of Icke’s clips, including a nearly five-hour lecture on how aliens built the pyramids and secretly run the planet through a ruling class extraterrestrial-human hybrids

I mean Queen Elizabeth being a reptilian is such bullshit. Everybody knows she's a freaking Power Ranger

@Jenayah Of course

@Donald.McLean Good day, Hubble Guy

@Adamant oh probably elsewhere as well but it's funnier to make fun of one's local politicians innit? :P
@Donald.McLean greetings, Hubble guy!

@Jenayah That was probably an episode of Dr. Who.

I think nutjobs are universal, like death and taxes.

Alex Jones believes in the reptiles, I think.

Actually if you look online most of the reptile theorists say Alex Jones is a reptile.
They've seen him shape-shifting on camera.

Q: What happens to Mjolnir (Thor's hammer) at the end of Endgame?

Milan DesaiIn Avengers: Endgame, Thor brings back Mjolnir (his hammer) from the past to his "future" self through the quantum tunnel. Later in the movie, Captain America gets hold of it being worthy. However, I don't remember if Cap takes it back to the past in the climax. If he doesn't - that would break ...

1:40 PM
And people don't read them

So he believes in the reptilians, but he's a reptile.

Judging from its usage, it is far from being remotely classic.

I guess that kind of makes sense.

@NapoleonWilson Well, it's supposed to be a classic supposedly
I still haven't read it

With one single (ID) question. Ain't no tags for no classics noone never doesn't talk about.

1:41 PM
classic: a book that everyone reads exactly once and never again.

1:55 PM
@Adamant But if I don't pronounce the words the same way the translator does, it's just incoherent to me...
@TheLethalCarrot Edit rep definitely does count against the cap.

Are you sure? I didn't think it did but been ages since I've gotten rep from edits haha

Thinking about it, yes it does count towards repcap
I used to go on a wiki edit spree to round 'em repcaps up ;p

@TheLethalCarrot The two times I've tried to write tag wikis they've been rejected. So it's not just people not writing them.

@Jenayah Well the rep from accepts counts towards the rep cap badges (you just need to hit 200) but doesn't count towards the actual cap
@DavidW Well that's different, either they weren't good wikis or some people weren't reviewing "good"

@TheLethalCarrot Check out my rep. tab from 2 days ago. The tag edits were counted as part of the 200 daily cap.

2:06 PM
True, could be a quirk with wiki edits as well though but maybe not

@TheLethalCarrot Some feedback would have been nice, but I figure I'll just wait until I get a few hundred more rep then add whatever I like. :-P

@DavidW IIRC there was one about a physics theory?
That we discussed in chat?

Hard to add feedback tbh

Custom reject reason
up to suggesting editor to review it

Well yeah but the amount of characters is tiny
And there's no way for a discussion off of it

2:12 PM
true true
when suggesting editors are chatters as well it's easier to reach tho

Oh yeah but I'd argue that's a workaround to discuss :P
FWIW @Jenayah I've been looking around and can't find anything about Ghost
I doubt they'd kill her off, off screen but who knows

Wait you mean using SE functionalities as a way to bypass some SE restrictions because part of the system is stupid? Such novelty
@TheLethalCarrot doubt it too but was curious
And it's rare enough that I find a question to ask which I didn't find an answer to (by myself) before so... :P

Yeah I have that problem, sometimes, especially with newer stuff, I ask first and then google haha

@TheLethalCarrot Not how it should be done
I mean, research and all

2:18 PM
Meh, on the rare occasion I do that it's hardly a problem... I mean I always check for dupes first anyway

Uh, when a question can be answered in a one-minute Google it lacks of research

Not saying it doesn't

Well I mean we're back to the "but should it be on the site when it's already answered somewhere else"
like there was on meta a couple months ago
and I stand by "if you're reposting that to have it 'for sure' on the site and/or rep, then mate you do whatever you want with your life, but I don't think it's a good thing to do"

Well if you know the answer and are doing it just for rep then yeah that's different
@Jenayah I've even tried looking for her contract length but turning up nothing to try and confirm if she's in a later film haha
TBH I think she is alive but nothing is confirmed so who knows

yeah I was just asking for her 'cause she had her life on a string so the MINOR SPOILER time that has gone through in Endgame might've dired the situation

2:30 PM
I'm of the opinion of my comment there but that's complete speculation

aye we'll most likely see by the next movies but Feige loves to hear himself talk so could happen a bit before that
I'm starting to think that, once upon a time, there was a whole slew of SF/Fantasy novels about rock bands heroically saving the world with their music. Who knew? — Lorendiac 2 hours ago

Aye I think Rudd is potentially signed up for more films in his contract so there could be more to come
So how many movies is Paul signed for?

FEIGE It was multiple, like every movie nowadays. Three is the minimum. But I think it's three-plus-plus to appear in other things.

Contract length isn't really an indication anyway
I mean you can do an origin story on a dead character.
(nudge nudge wink wink)

Yeah it's not definitive proof

And... out of the chatters here, maybe a bit :P I dunno, you state yourself that you read a lot and you've read stuff from that period if memory from reading your story-ID answers serves

I mostly read the Retief novels and some of the earlier Bolo. Couldn't get into the Lafayette O'Leary books, and wandered off into Stasheff and then Sheffield if I'm remembering correctly.

You have some Bolo copies?
Well specifically, do you have the text of "Yesterday's Gods"?

Still? Probably just Bolo, but maybe Rogue Bolo as well.

3:43 PM
I don't really know how Bolo works, but I do know that you may be able to patch up an answer to this. It's better than just having the answer in comments, or having someone patch up a copy-paste answer with no quotes or explanation.

No, I don't have that. I don't have any of the "Created by Keith Laumer" books.

Ah, well if you ever do, you know what to do :)

After reading a few of the "Man-Kzin Wars" shared-world anthologies, and cough "Thieves' World" cough I kinda soured on the whole shared-universe thingy.

I have no idea what you're talking about, so I'll just nod.
*nods*

Q: How was this possible at the end?

Bojan BThere is this one little thing that I don't quite get at the end of the movie. After Thanos was defeated, Captain took the stones back to where they were originally taken to "correct" the timeline. However we see that Cap has the 6 stones in their "Raw" form, but that is not how all of them were...

Q: Does Captain America have to lose that character again?

enorl76In Avengers: Endgame, towards the end, we see Captain America being sent back in time to restore the Stones, and he chooses to remain back in time and live his life with Peggy Carter. Does he then have to experience the Snapocalypse, likely losing Peggy in the process, but knowing in 5 years she...

Q: Was there a shared-world project before "Thieves World"?

DavidWThieves World (ISFDb) by Robert Asprin is the first formal shared-world project I can remember; its success seemed to create a bunch of similar projects through the 1980s. I'm thinking of Heroes in Hell (ISFDb) by Janet Morris, The Man-Kzin Wars, Bolos, Merovingen Nights and probably others I'm ...

People are too busy watching Endgame, they don't get random memories of cartoons they used to watch "years ago" or that novel they "read as a kid". C'mon people ask story-ID questions

Q: Why did Shazam! take place in a real city?

DeeVThe movie Shazam takes place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is different than most DC movies and shows in which they all take place in fictional cities. Superman is in Metropolis. Batman is in Gotham. Flash is in Central City. The Green Arrow is in Star City. In the comics, Shazam (Captain ...

Q: What are the exact memes that are being referenced in the new “SpongeBob SquarePants Masterpiece Memes” collection of action figures?

JakeGouldSo Nickelodeon has just released a new line of action figures called the “SpongeBob SquarePants Masterpiece Memes” line. Pic below. What are the exact memes that this commemorative collection is commemorating?

Somebody with more knowledge than me wants to write that wiki? scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/spongebob-squarepants

@Jenayah sure it’s on-topic?

It's one of those which has occasional SFF elements
One of the three episodes I watched had an evil Spongebob spawning from a magic pencil. Seems on-topic, although I don't know whether the memes referenced here are SFFnal. Cf this metaJenayah 47 mins ago

literally flies if I'm reading it right

Is the show any good?

What, Spongebob?
I hated that stuff when I was a kid, now I don't really care but I guess it'd piss me off
(well if I'm being honest I disliked a lot of cartoons when I was a kid...)

I never watched TV when I was a kid, really

Q: Was the Kwisatz Haderach necessarily able to see the future?

KrytenI'm re-reading the original Dune series (for about the hundredth time) and there's a question that I've always had about the kwisatz haderach. There seems to be a common belief (among [questioners] (Was Frank Herbert's use of Bene Gesserit in his plot ironic?) and answerers here on this site and...

Great research effort...

@Stormblessed two things 1/ don't just go downvote-happy for a badge, make sure to actually review the thing and 2/ what's that got to do with Enlightened?
Enlightened is accepted with 10 or more

@Jenayah Electorate

I don't see the relation with questions

I’m only voting very bad questions like that one above
@Jenayah need to vote on 17 more questions

Instead of going on a DV spree, why not look out for some gems to upvote instead? :)

@Jenayah ooh, that’s positive

yeah... ;)

Any good ones you like but aren’t upvoted much? Just questions

Well that also depends on what you're interested in. I can point to different questions on different stuff but it's your vote, and don't just vote to vote, y'know ;)

Q: Why couldn't the Jedi detect Senator Palpatine as having powers?

ChloeIn Return of the Jedi, when trying to sneak into the base on a shuttle, Luke said he senses Darth Vader's presence and said he shouldn't have come lest he jeopardize the mission. Darth Vader also sensed Luke, but let him in anyways. Also, Yoda and Obi-Wan could detect the Force in young Anakin. ...

Good question

I've been editing - a couple a day - old unanswered questions with bad titles to have better titles; it bumps them back to the front page, and maybe gives them a new chance at getting answered. I pick interesting ones, and I upvote them when I edit them.

A: Why do XKCD comics onebox?

Adam LearThere's not much to it. :) XKCD provides comic data in JSON that we can easily consume, it's a comic that gets quoted a bunch in chat, and at one point a developer cared enough to write-up the parser for the onebox.

Can we have a literature story-ID feed? @Gallifreyan @SQB

Yeah deffo that!

SQB
8:04 PM
@Stormblessed sure. I'm surprised we don't already.
What's the exact tag?

SQB has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

SQB
Done.
We'll see how that goes. If that produces too many off topic questions that nobody cares for, we can remove it again.

There's like one every four days, we'll be fine

SQB
I'm surprised we don't have the genre tags in the feed, either.
Current tags from lit are a bit... random.

Q: Children raised out of human society - ancient stories
