It’s so weird to look at ELL and realize how unnecessarily complicated English grammar is but how it doesn’t seem that way if it’s your native language most of the time. There are so many terms like “modal verb” I’ve never heard of at all.

Q: Does The Ancient One's explanation create a paradox?

PaleSpoilers, obviously. In Endgame, it seems that the Ancient One's explanation of However, See this drawing below (SPOILERS):

@Stormblessed A lot of those things exist in other languages as well. German: Modalverben. At least in English we have simplified conjugations (except for a few irregular verbs like "to be" and the 3rd person it's all "I hear, you hear, he hears, we hear, you hear, they hear." And our tenses are fairly simple too, constructed mostly with helper verbs. "I hear, I heard, I did hear, I will hear, I will have heard." Compare French with, what, 19 tenses?
And except for pronouns we don't have formal cases. "The black dog is tired." "I met the black dog." "I give a bone to the black dog." "I took the black dog's ball." "I saw him with the black dog." In a lot of languages "the black dog" would be declined differently in each of those sentences.
Of course English spelling and English adjective ordering are in a class of their own. :)

GGMGIn the first chapter of The Hobbit, Gandalf says this about choosing a hobbit for the fourteenth member of the party: “Of course there is a mark,” said Gandalf. “I put it there myself. For very good reasons. You asked me to find the fourteenth man for your expedition, and I chose Mr. Bagg...

But the user Beta claims that that's not it.
OK, I have an idea....
It's a funny thing about these human exceptionalism stories.
A good portion of them aren't simply about the exceptionalism of humans, they're about the exceptionalism of a certain type of human.
In this case, a rural white man without formal education, but presumably with street smarts.

@DavidW something like that, yeah. Truth be told though I wouldn't be able to explain either French or English grammar
