@Alex oh, ok! I thought you had an example of a former minister being sacked or stuff - hey, that's a good question actually. Can a Minister be sacked?

@Alex yeah because we discussed it and it was a yes(ish)
Since the identity of the animal is moot as far as the thought experiment is concerned this question is not about history of science and mathematics. Biographical details, including personal preferences, are only on-topic here to the extent that they affect science and mathematics. — Conifold 3 mins ago
Ah, crap xD
that's what I get when I get out of my cocoon stack :p

@Jenayah It hasn't been closed though.

@Alex well if it's off-topic it will
There's literally no way I can phrase that into "how does the cat affect science and math"

@Jenayah But I don't see such a close reason on their list.

@Alex what's the list?

A: Are questions about mathematicians and scientists' lives on topic?

DanuQuestions on the personal lives of scientists should certainly be allowed, with the important caveat that the question has to be clearly relevant to the academic work of these people. Clearly, a question about the eating habits of Albert Einstein should be off-topic, while I think the example q...

Q: How was Dumbledore's portrait put up so quickly?

FredWeaslyfanIn Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, when Harry goes into the headmaster's/headmistresse's study with McGonagall, Dumbledore's portrait is already on the wall, how was it painted so quickly? Did someone paint it really fast or is it part of the magic of Hogwarts?

@TheLethalCarrot that would be something to flag about, not chat pinging a mod, as that also avoids a public mention

@Mithrandir He was in the room at the time, the chat message was quicker. As for public mention, 9 very quick tag edits is more public than a chat comment

(It's also not such a horrible thing to make some edits. The thing about not making too many at a time... <insert Barbossa quote>) ;)

@TheLethalCarrot Looks like we've got a small edit war around the tag.

Greetings, Earthlings.

From what I recall of meta discussions on character tags, there are a number of people vocally against having any at all, but the overall conclusion was that they're OK if there's reasonably many questions about the character.

@Randal'Thor Yup, though no proper war yet... i.e. roll back to add it back

I can't say that character tags make much sense to me.

Nor to me but it was the mass edits not the tag that I was raising

12:00 PM
There are people who have particular expertise in one character.
And single characters with dozens of questions specifically about them.
Star Trek's Data and Harry Potter's Snape spring to mind.

cough Bellatrix cough

Perhaps I've just read so many great characters over the years that I have trouble understanding how people can get hung up on one in particular.
My SFF journey started in earnest in 1974.

@Donald.McLean (Unfortunately?) so much of this site is about analysing a few popular works in great detail rather than branching out.

@Randal'Thor I know. I would love to see more questions about the books of Anne Bishop, or from the Honor Harrington universe, or the Oz books.

Gilles described the difference as "fans" vs "readers". Fans are deeply into some specific franchises, whereas readers favour breadth and know a great many different works, if perhaps in less minute detail.

12:06 PM
I would definitely be a reader by that standard.

@Randal'Thor You might be thinking of Shog's response to one of the various character tag meta discussions.

A: Why is there a voldemort tag? Is there a criterion for character tags?

Shog9So, I just found out that y'all have some rule about tagging being reserved for "major characters". I found out about it because almost four years later people are still arguing about it. If it takes an acrimonious discussion for every tag to establish whether or not it's appropriate, the test ...

A search for [star-wars] is:question Jar Jar turns up 40 questions. is not appropriate for all of them but it is appropriate for >10 so it's a good tag by Shog's recommendation.
And such a tag would make it easier for users who hate Jar Jar to ignore questions about him.

@Null That's so hypothetical. None of our users hate Jar Jar Binks :-)

^ I'm not sure what the question is asking for here. Would just a semaphore, telegraph (wired or wireless), telephone or radio message sent to multiple destinations at the same time, in an on-topic fiction work, count?

Doubt it
They seem to be asking for a device like video calling (for an easy example)

@TheLethalCarrot So a television. That's trickier.

Well the Palantir is an example but doesn't count per the OP's description because it wasn't shown connected to multiple seeing stones at the same time
(assuming the OP is correct of course)

@TheLethalCarrot The current version (assuming there's nothing actively broken) will probably go live for everyone in the next week or so. I have to do a last check in and see and then I'll have them switch it over. Any additional work on the design will be probably after the new year, depending on how long it takes to finish the last ~30 sites.

Hi, is the answer still 42 at this extremity of space?

@Mithrandir do you know why Smokey considers "serum" to be a bad word? I just checked but it really doesn't seem to have a naughty meaning, does it?
@Nick it would be yeah :p

It's not a bad word but it is present quite often in spam ads for various products.

4:27 PM
Oh, okay

Serum has to do with solvent and solute and even coagulation of mixtures/solutions. We call it a mixture when heterogeneous components don't mix evenly, solution if otherwise. Serum when it's slightly viscous but not too much and it cures something.

I'm half tempted to troll Smokey now...
@Nick I smell a chemist over there :p

Mostly serum makes me think of hair products.

I thought it was flagging a different word.

@Jenayah I spent time on Chem.SE because hisghchool chem was tough. Physical chem was stoichiometry and organic chem was just s2p3d4f5 madness
