22:00
and she tried to read the book in the bathroom for the second task
which is when her mother started bleeding
I wonder if it's really just about a little girl escaping into any kind of fantasy or if all those quests are specifically related to her real life.
the whole premise of the fantasy story is that her father was important in this kingdom, so that's a big relation
I hate this scene
I think the rest of it is effectively making it up as she goes
actually no this feast might be a metaphor for the rationing
22:02
@NapoleonWilson the toad in the tree could've been her little brother killing her mother
or the dinner table from earlier
considering where this guy is sitting
is that the same fireplace even?
Oh, the hands guy.
someone's seen The Last Crusade
22:03
the handy man
Oof that thing is forking ugly
hecks ugly
charisma dump stat
followed by epic charisma damage
followed by ugly stick and curse of ugly
hm, so what is the symbolic purpose of this creature having its eyes not on its head
What did she do?
she ate a grape
22:05
she ate a grape
jinx
after being warned to touch absolutely none of the food
It's got man boobs
Yeah, great. Kids!
Run you idiot!
hm, he ate exactly two faeries...like those two innocents the Captain killed earlier?
I may be overthinking this
22:06
But well, I guess she's hungry, with evil real life and all that.
I hate this
@Ixrec I'd say keep an eye out for the Captain using his hands. He took his glove off to test the fire in the forest that one time
sorry haha :D
creepy scene
oh that's a good point
the faun's gonna be annoyed that you got two of his faeries eaten
This is why they need to teach pull ups in gym class
22:07
Don't they already?
I never learnt to do a pull up
where did you go to school? The military?
There's not too much to learn, though. It's pretty much a strength thing. ;-)
I'd never be able to do a pull up
But...uh...we totally had that in sports lessons.
@Ixrec oh yeah, and that one time when he met the mother, he put his hand on her stomach to feel the baby
22:09
I just wasn't very good at it, because, well, strength.
@DaaaahWhoosh so far these are fairly innocuous things anyone would use their hands for, so I'm not convinced just yet
@Edlothiad Did you really not do that in sports lessons in school?
fortunately the Harry Potter mandrake rules don't apply here
they never asked us to do pull ups
ok, definitely only interested in the son
I'm suddenly hungry for some mandrake cereal
During WWII, the Spanish dictator Franco dreamed of a united Spain -- which in his eyes meant one homogenous culture, which in turn meant crushing every non-compliant culture so they could share just the one in the name of unity. Many people did not like this and resisted, and there were a great many atrocities performed by Franco in the name of unification.
I believe that's the background of the rebels in this story.
22:12
Well, yeah.
there's probably some irony in the unborn child being influenced by Ofelia more than the captain because of her stories
it's a trap!
ah, and now he knows she was helping them
looks up what pistol that is
mauser?
ah I was right, it is a Luger
They look quite characteristic.
had to check since I thought the Lugers were a German-only thing
22:16
I wouldn't wonder if they got them from them.
indeed
but the Spanish might've had their own similar-looking officer pistol for all I know
for those who haven't seen the film before, I think this is the most gruesome bit coming up
fair warning
IMFDB page for Pan's Labyrinth for those interested in the firearms
ah no there is another cut before it
22:17
Oh.
well you saw where that was going

Q: Did this character steal this other chacter's body?

CodeMedIn Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, a series of events at the end of the movie seem odd and, when taken together over several viewings, make it seem that. Here are the events: Rocket re-assembles Yondu's arrow skillfully enough that another character is able to control the arrow. Then, ...

@Ixrec thank you for the warning, it was long enough ago I don't remember these things
I completely forgot about the face bashing at the beginning but I remembered this upcoming scene, so...yeah
Hmm, I'm getting more and more excited.
22:18
@NapoleonWilson Nah we just played sports
Well, we too. Depended on the season, I guess.
Well no real seasons, we played sports all year round
I mean I've always been strong enough to do a pull up, but yeah
I've completely forgotten what we actually see him do to the poor guy here, but I strongly remembe not liking it.
We did all kinds of stuff. Gymnastics, athletics, strength stuff, and the occasional team sports game.
just want to point out, contrary to most movies, torture doesn't actually seem to work
22:21
well, yeah, you're just as likely to get made up information as real information
Why's he stuttering so hard?
not sure if he's injured or cold or what
@Edlothiad it's his only established character trait
That he stutters?
22:22
yeah, there was a scene earlier where he stuttered. And someone mentioned it.
your essence is impure!
well, no, it was definitely not an accident
Well my first school shut down because it was a shit hole. And our sports teacher was just like "Choose a sport, make 2 teams and play"
Second school just did sports
yeah
was fun though
what was the significance of comparing those two vials just now?
22:25
@Ixrec he's the rat
clearly he knows the doctor's a rebel now but I'm not clear how that gave it away
they found the vial in the forest, and they found it in his stuff
Well, one was not full...
ah
oh she really did put a mandrake under the bed
I don't get why he'd be angry about it
at best, it helps. At worst, it smells bad
22:28
the timing of that is very interesting though
Well, he's an asshole, and she did kids stuff.
actually no she probably got sick again right then just be because she was stressed by the captain freaking out about the mandrake and she got out of bed
Or it was the mandrake, dun dun duuun!
yeah I was gonna say that seems like one of the few signs that it's all real
but nope, still ambiguous
so what I'm wondering is why her fantasy narrative had Pan abandon her earlier, basically ending that story for the time being
Ok I got to go, enjoy the film!
22:32
oh no!!! Bye Edlothiad!
Goo' byesns!
bye
right, he found the lock unlocked earlier so that's why he's called her here now
wow, I forgot she wanted to run away so badly she was willing to leave her mother behind
whose mother?
Ofelia's
the dead one?
22:35
Earlier that is?
right, duh, I got mixed up a bit there
famous last words
lol he still has that lottery ticket!
Drgh, why's he still alive?
of course, now that she has literally no one else left he comes back
so she ran so far, that no one heard all those gunshots?
also, AAAAAAAAHHHH
yeah not looking directly at the screen for this one
I assume they assumed those gunshots were of the officers shooting the woman
22:43
oh, I guess that kind of makes sense

People will tell you that Wonder Woman is the best DCEU movie so far, and that’s true. People will tell you that Wonder Woman is the best female-led superhero movie of all time, and that’s also true. But Wonder Woman doesn’t need any of those qualifiers — Wonder Woman is a genuinely good movie in a way that’s refreshing. Similar to Logan ... Read more

I get that sewing your own face back together is super manly, but drinking alcohol ten seconds later seems like a really stupid move
@Ixrec Yeah, like in Cliffhanger. ;-)
@Ixrec really stupid moves are also super manly
22:45
masculinity is weird
...oh, that exact stupidity is useful, nice
Hmm, I totally missed what Pan actually wanted her to do.
he wanted her to go somewhere, and take her brother with her
I think it was the labyrinth
Ah, well, I assume that's what she wanted to do anyway.
indeed
oh, hey, the Shining
22:49
dude, having a son's not gonna matter much if the rebels wipe out literally all of your men back there and then come for you
shouldn't you be focused on that fight?
personally, this guy scares me way more than the dude from the Shining
he doesn't have enough blood left to think rationally
yeah I totally believe the Captain would do this
Oh, so it's about her inner struggle to care for her brother whilst him being the cause for her mother's death (and an incarnation of his evil father afterall).
ah, you're right, that's probably part of this too
Yeah, crap, and Ophelia's dead? :'(
22:56
yes ;_;
;_;
the end ;_;
at least her brother lived
Hmpf, sure.
silver lining!
Nice movie, though.
22:58
huh, last time I saw this I thought the fantasy stuff actually happened. Now I'm less sure
I wonder if that means something
@DaaaahWhoosh same, but i'm still more sure it did than sure it didn't
The first time I saw this I was on the fence about whether the fantasy stuff was real until right at the end, then when I saw Ofelia's death I was convinced it was just a fantasy.
I knew beforehand that it was a "message film" about real stuffs, but it did feature much more real world than I expected.
yeah, the first time around I was paying way more attention to the fantasy bits
same, though the first time around i was, like, 16 or 17 maybe
23:01
maybe it's a metaphor. The more you look at something, the more you see past the magic, until you're convinced there was never any magic at all
I think that just speaks to how the film was great overall, so it's still good no matter what I happen to be paying the most attention to.
@Ixrec yeah, I didn't really think that could happen with films
This time around for instance I was much more conscious of the fact that Ofelia knows exactly what's going on around her. I wasn't sure the first time if she had any idea why all these terrible things were happening.
23:04
Thank you all for watching this with me. :)
& I hope you enjoyed it
You're welcome. ;-P
it was a great choice
thank you! :D
so @doppelgreener gets to choose the theme for the next one, right?
23:06
Oh, so it was his suggestion?
yeah, just double-checked
I thought it was the time lord guy.
Gallifreyan? close, he nominated Nausicaa so he chose the "dark fantasy" theme
Ah. Well, that would have been a nice choice, too. But I've already seen that not too long ago.
23:19
@Napoleon, that's the one we watched last month.
Ah, I see.
So he suggested that and then picked this theme.
& right now I'm trying to think of themes that don't conjure up only like, two or three movies. :D
maybe Western. 🤠
Best Supporting role in a Columbus film?
@doppelgreener Should be on-topic, though.
Maybe a space Western.
@NapoleonWilson ... Western With A Twist? 🤠🌀
Fantasy Western or Scifi Western, as long as it's not Plain Western
...like Outland.
Hmm, I'm sure people would just want to watch a bunch of Firefly episodes then.
There was also some semi-interesting Korean thing I watched on TV a few years ago.
Or semi-Korean maybe (still not full-interesting, though) ;-)
23:24
Cowboys and Aliens =P
(I actually liked that film but apparently no one can agree on whether it's any good or not)
Well, it's a nice movie for sure.
It's pretty much what it says, not more but also not less. And the main actors are cool.
And the whole gold-craving aliens thing was a nice allegory, even if maybe a little in your face.
I have decided on a theme: Robots. That's got a lot of breadth to it but it's focused enough people can think of a thing.
yeah that sounds solid
23:32
That's...original. ;-P
I immediately thought of Ex Machina
well, "post-apocalyptic" and "dark fantasy" aren't exactly original =P
Yeah, I'm not too serious, it's super fine.
do replicants count as robots? =D
I'm sure they do. Though, that movie always left it a little ambiguous what they're really made of.
I think there was quite a suggestion that a large deal of biology was involved, too.
I might add in aspects from the (quite good) adventure game into that, though.
