@doppelgreener You say sweet rep I say rep cap!
So I raised a custom mod flag about a users reviewing habits, yet the user is still reviewing very poorly. @Mithrandir, what do?
Oh wait it was marked helpful, I guess that means the mods are having a cheeky look and will teach him a lesson?
@PaulWhite What happened?
@Gallifreyan Just some admin. We don't want links to off-site chat here.
@Edlothiad Why not both!
@PaulWhite Why not?
09:30
@Gallifreyan People looking for SFF chat should find SFF chat, not anything else.
@doppelgreener No you were meant to say sweet rep, to which I followed rep cap.
I'm a bad person. I answer selective questions that will raise my score-to-answer ration In the hopes of one day catching up to the legendary isanae.
@PaulWhite Some people may be looking for people who aren't in this chat, but are in some other chat, in which case the link could be helpful. I don't think it's up to us to remove stuff posted by community unless it's rude/abusive.
@Edlothiad (oh right.) sweet rep!
REP CAP
@Gallifreyan it's the blues, they're at it again!
Hm. I am fine with people linking to other chats (it's necessary and helpful sometimes) but I am lukewarm-to-uncomfortable with the idea of people coming in to advertise the private chat of users who were virtually permabanned from this service, and there's a reasonable concern that it's in any chat's interest to not facilitate attempts to poach users. 🤔
09:39
Hey we're still here
just y'know there too
@Gallifreyan If people are looking for particular users, they can be found in other ways e.g. via main site profiles. Links to "new mos" etc. have been discussed by the mods and CMs elsewhere; we came to the conclusion that such links are not welcome.
I still gotta get my questions in
@PaulWhite Fair enough.
@PaulWhite Shouldn't users have been informed of this? This seems like something that should be transparent with the users of this site, and not kept away from us?
(Apparently there's context I'm not caught up on! Not surprising, since I don't moderate this particular site.)
09:42
@Edlothiad Sorry I haven't read the complete transcript of this room to see if anything had been said before. We aren't deliberately keeping things to ourselves, but it seems fairly obvious to me that links to off-site chat among users that were involved in the demise of the previous main SFF chat might not be the greatest idea in the world.
Historically, the Streisand effect is really strong with this sort of thing.
We're all trying extra hard to keep TREU on track and I hope you can see this sort of thing is in everyone's best interests.
though it has been linked many times before to no apparent ill effect, I think this is the first time a mod even noticed the link being posted
@Ixrec No the link has been cleaned up from the transcript many times.
09:45
huh, ok, must've been really delayed before
Yes we're a bit slow ;)

Q: Star Trek TOS, in S3E19, is Leonard Nimoy actually playing the piano?

CraigR8806In "Requiem for Methuselah", there is a scene where Spock surprisingly knows how to play the piano. He perfectly plays a waltz while Captain Kirk and Rayna dance. My question is, during the recording of this scene, was Leonard Nimoy actually playing the piano, or was it feigned?

09:48
I think that's just a standard downvote and move on
@Edlothiad On my site, I look into the review history, and often discuss it with the user in private chat. If that doesn't work, there are tools to prevent the problem continuing, without affecting their participation in other things. I think I've had to do that maybe twice.
That isn't an answer. It makes no attempt at describing how the sword retracts
@Edlothiad But it "answers" other points from the question body.
it answers 1 of two subquestions, but not the question.
We'll see what the mods think
that's what happens when crap answers are allowed to stay, and when people ask questions from popular works that aren't supposed to have answers.
09:51
@PaulWhite <- I've only been a moderator for a month and haven't run into this circumstance yet, but I imagine I'd do more or less this. If someone's being flagged for poor usage of review queues it's probably something somewhat severe, & it's definitely something we'd have to look into seriously.
Ok, so I can trust the matter is being handled appropriately?
@Gallifreyan Over on RPG.SE we had this conversation:

Q: Should I be requesting people answer the question independently?

doppelgreenerFor a while now, we've had answers like these ones which fail to really answer the question on their own, but just add some extra information building on other pre-existing answers. They often even say as much: "This other answer already covers everything, so let me talk about some tangential ext...

@doppelgreener In my experience, it's almost always a simple misunderstanding of the review process.
In effect the community agreed we're not super interested in partial answers or tack-on answers; we expect each answer to independently tackle the question as if it was the only answer, and judge answers similarly on the basis of whether it'd be useful if it was the only one.
@PaulWhite Thanks for sharing that experience. An awful lot of apparent misconduct on Stack Exchange sites comes down to not fully understanding their practices, so I'm not surprised.
^ Her name is Cookie, and she's a hedgehog.
09:55
@Gallifreyan that's some spikey floof
@doppelgreener That makes sense, I'll see if I can campaign for this here.
I think I just handled my first chat flag
@Edlothiad How did it feel?
I got a "only flagged messages can be counter-flagged"
so I don't think I did anything :/
@Edlothiad I was late for this one as well :) Who would flag this message?
09:58
@Gallifreyan One thing to anticipate is that some people will feel they're being asked to wholly repeat what other answers have already said, at similar length. "I don't want to have to write all that again!" or somesuch. AlexP provided some guidance on that situation in the second to last paragraph, i.e. between the last two bullet points. (Strictly speaking it's an explanation of the bullet point just above it.)
@Edlothiad yeah, it would've been handled already. chat flags often go away pretty quickly so it's normal for me to get that message as well.

Marceline in a super sentai outfit seems the most likely to me, but now I really want to find this out for reals.
10:38
@Edlothiad Yes. You'll see helpful/declined on the flag and maybe a short note, but otherwise there's generally no other feedback. Mods take flags seriously and handle them to the best of their ability.

so as far as I can tell we don't currently have any spoiler chatrooms where Wonder Woman would fit, any objections to me making one? (since I know myself and Dizzle at least are going to see it later today)
@Gallifreyan that link is probably not strictly legal, but in theory it looks like it might work just fine
14:07
@Ixrec Go nuts :)
@doppelgreener True that (worked for previous film nights though). We'll leave it as an alternative then.
@Gallifreyan A source like this would also perform better than Rabb.it, provided everyone can stream it effectively, with the exception that Rabb.it would keep everyone synchronised.
