Q: SF book, early 1980's, Galactic gunfighter

DannyMcGI read this paperback book in the early 1980's but it wasn't in a new condition. There was a young gunfighter arrived on a frontier world and he goes to a bar and almost immediately is challenged to a fight, he wins. Saloon gal sits to chat with him and admires his two trusty six-guns, a novelty...

Q: Is Deathly Hallows Part 2, and by extension, any Harry Potter movie that J.K. Rowling produced, canon?

Kyle VIs Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and by extension, any Harry Potter movie that J.K. Rowling produced or had any involvement with, canon, as she chose the direction (along with other famous people like Chris Columbus and David Heyman), despite the discontinuities that it had with th...

Q: In Interstellar, why did NASA hold Coop away from his daughter when he first was brought into the NASA facility?

Bob516There is a short scene where Coop is being guarded by a TARS (maybe it was the other machine) after arriving at the NASA facility in the middle of the night. Why was he kept alone in that room, away from his daughter, rather than just being brought to Prof. Brand and the rest of the NASA personn...

Q: Why hasn't Batman ever had Superman send the Joker to the Phantom Zone?

The MandolorianSo I understand why Batman doesn't kill the Joker. But the fact remains that Arkham just doesn't seem to be capable of holding him. So why not have him sent to an interdimensional prison designed to hold Kryptonians? I'm wondering if Batman has ever asked Superman to put Joker into the Phantom Zo...

Q: How much of the shrunken/giant Ant-Man is Paul Rudd?

Donatello SwansinoVarious times throughout his MCU tenure, the character of Ant-Man, played by Paul Rudd, shrinks and grows. He goes through various trials and tribulations while at those sizes, such as riding ants, spinning around on a record, and grabbing War Machine out of the sky. How much of these movements a...

Q: What's the title of a short SciFi story about mind control hijacking

Wayne RevellI read an excellent SF short story about 20 years ago. It started as a man being chased by the police. The man himself had had his mind taken over by another 'being'. These 'beings' were hunted by the authorities. At some point the 'being' jumped to a new host and mentally battled with the ho...

Q: How did they light Magneto's plastic prison?

user129561Both versions of the plastic prison, but especially the Pentagon prison, were well lit. How did they do this without using metal in the wiring and lightbulbs?

No worries, flagged the user's comment to you as well... looks like it's gone now

Yeah, between your flag, mine and probably Adamant's, it was maybe even automatic
Shame though: that's the first time I've seen this user respond to feedback
Admittedly it's not the cuddliest feedback but if they were responding, they could have gone the length to actually adding something

Sometimes silently respond by actually editing but yeah that's the first comment reply I've seen
And well yeah it's not sugar coated anymore but at some point you have to start removing some sugar to try and get the point across
Apparently have done other comment replies that are constructive

Meh at this point it's more of a comment for fellow reviewers to VTD

Q: A story about a beneficial 'disease' - 'nerve skin'?

j4nd3r53nReading this question Short story about a sentient disease from a Jovian moon, I came to think about a story, probably a novel, I read maybe 40 years ago, in Danish. Q: Have the westworld Producers acknowledged the similarities between Westworld season 3 and Person of Interest

Richard CSeason 3 of Westworld contains the idea of the human race being controlled by an artificial intelligence, rehoboam. This AI identifies individuals that need to be removed in order to protect the human race. This is remarkably similar to the Samaritan AI that is a protagonist of the later season...

A: Can the Soul Stone be acquired by 'sacrificing' Wade Wilson?

TheLethalCarrotWade Wilson, aka Deadpool, currently resides in the X-Men Cinematic Universe and not the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As we haven't seen Deadpool in the MCU yet we can't answer the question as to whether a Soul Stone sacrifice would work for him but we can say that currently the answer is no, yes, ...

@TheLethalCarrot I would have lead with "sacrificing is irreversible;" it's the stronger argument. IIRC, even in the comics the best that can be done is a trade?

Aye good point, tacked it on the end but should've been at the start, I've re-arranged it

This question made me think of the Heechee "Prayer fans", and browsing around, it looks like Frederik Pohl actually tied "The Marching Morons"/_The Space Merchants_ to _Gateway_/Heechee. I'm not sure I like that.

Henceforth I will not be worried about the propriety of editing a post to fix a single spelling mistake.

How come?

5:51 PM
Well, editing posts to change hyphens to emdashes is most certainly less important than that...

Q: How to call a form of government where the regent does not die

Patrick VillelaWatching Lucifer, I noticed he's referred as King of Hell. It got me wondering, is it right to call Monarchy a form of government where the regent will never die so a descendant can take over?

What's all this about?

Oh, I'm just being cranky.
So, really, nothing new. :)

@DavidW I think the only thing you need to worry about there is giving OP a few minutes to spot and fix their own errors. It encourages better writing in the long run.
Sorry I had a phone call while typing that.
Did anyone else know about the Space Merchants/Heechee connection?

6:07 PM
News to me.

It's in a short story called "The Merchants of Venys". I had to buy an old anthology off eBay, so we'll seevjust hiw connected it is.
Chat is even less forgiving of typos than comments.

Really, less? I thought it was about the same.
Unless it's only possible to edit the single last one.
(Which does not appear to be the case.)

Q: When did Tasslehoff recover the time traveling device that Raistlin took from Gnimsh?

RubenLagunaIn War of the Twins book 3 chapter 11, Raistlin gets the device/pendant from Gnimsh just before he kills him. @DavidW well I’m not sure those edits are worthwhile at all

Which was my point.

6:17 PM
Fixing a typo or a spelling mistake sure. Changing dash/ellipsis style not so much

Just, you know, phrased in an extremely passive-aggressive way because, well, cranky (cf.)

Aren’t we all a tad so at the moment

I'm sure. I'm not trying to claim I'm special. :)

@DavidW You can edit chat comments?

Well, on a computer you can. I can't vouch for mobile.
If you type something and immediately notice an error, arrow up will pull it back for a quick edit.
If it's not the last thing, the action arrow on the left margin will allow an edit for up to 2 minutes.

6:21 PM
No action arrow on mobile.

But if you poke at it, you'll get a toolbar with link, edit and delete?

I use full site on mobile, get the edit button then :)

No, it causes the browser to select text, and I get the browser's clipboard menu.
IIRC getting full site on chat is different from getting it on main/meta.

Oh, I get a "Select Message" menu with (for others) Reply, Link, Star and Flag, or (for myself) Link, Edit and Delete.

No, I habe a "mobile" link so this is already full site.

6:26 PM
I'm using the exact same URL on both my mobile and my computer; it's just detecting the device and rendering a mobile UI.
Maybe my wee old phone has a small enough display it won't even try to render the full site.

OK, so Firefox. Lets you edit.
The button is microscopic on a phone, however.
It's even harder to see the button on Chrome. But it's there.
So in the end this was all about my eyesight.
You have to know it's there, the action arrow won't appear until you click on it.
I was clicking on the left margin of the screen, not between the avatar and the message. And you have to zoom to prevent fatfinger.
DavidW edited one of his, and if I lift up my glasses and hold the phone an inch from my face, I can see a tiny pencil. Which clued me in to where to click.

6:51 PM
FWIW, that pencil is pretty tiny even on a reasonably sized monitor.

Okay, I don't normally comment on XKCD, but... WTF?!

I don't know, I'm not even sure how to read the thing.

It's not funny, it doesn't contain any obvious in-jokes (6x9 = 72?), and I CBA to try read it all to see if there might accidentally be something insightful.

It just looks like some random numbers thrown over a table

It claims that - even though he knows better - he somehow feels that 7x5 could be 40.

mmmmmh.

9:12 PM
The numbers do kinda increase mostly along with the actual result, but not consistently.

That's just called trying to get the change right when the market is only being held on Fridays and you have to wake up at 6 am to get some fresh vegetables.

I think another COVID comic wouldn't be worse.

(totally not me this morning, handing a bit too much coins to the market seller :) )

Coins, wow. I haven't handled coins in over 2 months.

They don't have the device for credit cards

9:16 PM
Makes sense.
I'm almost out of fresh vegetables myself, though I have a giant bag of frozen broccoli in the freezer. I may need to go shopping myself, unless I fancy a week of broccoli.

9:47 PM
scifi.stackexchange.com/a/159869/98028 deserves VTDs IMO. It's just a repeat of stuff that was already there three years before, with no further explanation, just a Youtube link.

Q: Who is being spoken to in the BSG miniseries?

MichaelJust started rewatching Battlestar Galactica. In the miniseries, shortly before the bombing of Caprica, Six turns and addresses someone off-camera "About time you got here." Is it ever revealed who she was speaking to?

11:08 PM
How disappointing. The XKCD wrong times table is symmetric. Commutative == nit wrong enough.

wee, a bronze nice answer badge for story-identification Marry Poppins guess
@Spencer You can also edit by pressing the up arrow when the talk input box is active and empty
press the up arrow multiple times to pick one of your multiple recent messages (they have to be recent to be editable), then edit away.

I only just today discovered that arrow-up worked beyond the most recent. Very handy.
But Spencer is chatting on mobile, so no arrow keys.

@b_jonas Not a single upvote for mine.

@Spencer Which one is that? I can fix that. :)
